Mrs. E. A. Stewart Dead


Another excellent mother and sister has been summoned to come up higher and dwell with her blessed in that land of pure delight, and there bask in the sunlight of her Great Redeemer, whom she trusted and loved as was exemplified by a Godly life and daily walk. She left a rich heritance of a well spent life, self sacrificing, kind and affectionate to all. At Washburn, where she lived so long in this city, she was held in the highest estimation obey all who had the pleasure of the acquaintance.

Mrs. E. A. (Gay) Stewart was a daughter of the late Mr. Daniel C. and Mrs. Jane Gay and was born May 21, 1835, in Missouri and grew to womanhood at Washburn, Mo. She and the late Rev. A. J. Stewart were married sometime before the civil war, to who were born six children, two of whom survive the mother, who are: Edward Stewart, a well known and highly respected citizen of Durant, Okla., and Dr. Fred Stewart a surgeon in the U. S. Army and who is now stationed in the Philippine Islands. She was the only living sister of Mrs. Jane McClure of this city, and was a sister of the late Mrs. Minerva Oakly of Washburn, and Mrs. Thos. Keet of Springfield, Mo.

She had made her home with her son Edward at Durant, Okla., for many years and died there, Friday, May 18, 1917, of apoplexy, age 81 years, 11 months and 20 days.

According to her wishes the remains were shipped to Springfield, Mo., and there taken to the home of her niece, Mrs. John R. Smith, where funeral services were conducted and the remains then interred in Hazelwood Cemetery beside her mother. They were accompanied by her son Edward Stewart and his son Daniel.

She had been a member of the Presbyterian Church for many years and had lived a consistent Christian life.

Mrs. Jane McClure, her sister and Mrs. S. W. Chandler, a niece, attended the funeral in Springfield Saturday.

Wm. H. Channell Dies


Another good citizen, neighbor and friend has been called from earth to heavenly refreshments where he will be reward according to his life's measurements in this world.

Wm. H. Channell died Saturday night, at his home on Rock Creek, May 19, 1917, at 10 p.m., of Bright's disease and dropsy, age 77 years. He was born in Montgomery County, Tenn., March 6, 1840. In his earlier life he was married and left his wife, four sons and five daughters to mourn his passing. Those present at the funeral were: Lum Channell of Galena, Kan., Roy Channell and Mrs. Janie Ganstine and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hightower of Oakland, Jasper County, Mrs. Laura McCary and Mrs. Ada Collins of Galena, Kan., Mrs. Hightower and Mrs. McCary were with there father when he passed away.

The deceased came to Barry County in 1894 and lived a quite and peaceable life since his residence here. He served in the Civil War on the side of the U. S. and his death decreased the rolls of the old veterans here.

The funeral services were conducted Monday at the Mano Church, after which the remains were laid to rest there. The decedent was a member of the Holiness Church.

85th Birthday


The relatives and friends of Mrs. R. J. Howerton met at her home on Shoal Creek, May 20th, and celebrated her 85th birthday anniversary and tendered her splendid dinner that was enjoyed by all present. Her two sisters Misses Dorcas and Tennessee Woodward spent the day very pleasantly. Those old time citizens have been the bone and sinew of Barry County, having lived honorable and upright lives and now in their declining years are held in the highest estimation possible by all their acquaintances. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Smith, H. H. Counts and family, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Daniels, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence King, Purdy, Luther Smith and family, Rocky Comfort, Aud Woodward and family, Mrs. Florence Woodward and family and Mrs. W. J. Smith, Anderson, McDonald County and S. A. Keeling and family of Wheaton. All departed for their homes feeling that they had done honor to a splendid woman and the pleasant occasion will long be remembered.

Roller - Packwood


That splendid couple of young people, Orville Roller of near Washburn and Miss Oma Packwood of near Exeter, who were married recently are to be congratulated on the consummation of their hearts desire. We are going to predict a successful and happy married life by these excellent people because they are worthy and will make this worth living. They are both successful school teachers in this county and will teach this fall and winter.

Dies From Injuries


Elmer Jenkins, who was injured in the Oronogo mines, died at a Webb City hospital on the 19th and was buried Monday at Oronogo.

The Crane Chronicle says he was raised near Scholten, Barry County. His parents reside near Scholten. He left a wife and three children to mourn his passing.

Killed in Iowa


Lewis D. Lincoln of Pioneer, this county, was killed recently at Brooks, Iowa, May 12. The Neosho Times says he was visiting relatives there and was standing on the track, watching a freight train pass, when a fast train stuck him, killing him instantly. Miss Iris Lincoln a teacher in the Purdy school is his daughter.

Dropped Dead


By telephone we learn that Thos. Pippin, an old citizen residing southwest of Washburn, died suddenly at his home Thursday evening. He had been sick with the measles, and had been in bad health. He was about 60 years. We heard that an inquest would be probably held.

Must Register June 5


There is no excuse allowable in getting around the enlistment on June 5 and every person 21 to 30 years inclusive will have to register. If sick a friend can register for you.
