Personal And Local


Mrs. F. M. Bennington who has been sick with the typhoid fever is improving.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. George Griffin, Jr., Wednesday, July 3 a son.

Lee Akin, a proprietor of the Cassville canning company is receiving his shipment of cans for his factory.

Cassville people will celebrate the Fourth at different places Pioneer, Forest Grove, Aurora, etc.

Miss Chloe Galloway, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Galloway and Tom Arnold, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Arnold, were married Sunday, June 30, Rev. Ed Chappell officiating. The Republican joins their many friends in wishes for long and happy lives.

Thos. Bowman of Colorado is visiting his brother, I. P. Bowman. He formally lived on Roaring River.

Ray Bryant has returned from a months stay in Kansas.

The Petit Jury was discharged Friday.

J. W. Reed and daughter and son J. W. Jr. of the Munsey locality were in Cassville Monday. J. W. Jr. took the preliminary examination and will enlist in the U.S. Navy. He reports at the St. Louis recruiting station.

Valentine Doty of near Jenkins was in Cassville Saturday and signed up for services in a mechanical school at St. Louis for special work in the army service. He with two other young men will likely be called to go to St. Louis about July 15.

Mr. and Mrs. Ross Stuckey and Mr. and Mrs. L. F. Jones and daughter, Miss Carrie, W. H. Martin, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. McQueen and family, Mr. and Mrs. P.E. Horine and Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Meador attended the Chautauqua at Wheaton Thursday night.

Capt. J. A. Livingston passed the 78th milestone on life's journey June 21 and Sunday Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Roller gave a family dinner in his honor. There were present Capt. and Mrs. Livingston, Mr. and Mrs. Ross Stuckey, and Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Reese.

Mrs. Joe Gamble of Pioneer has been visiting Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Martin this week.

J. W. Reed, Jr. of Roaring River and Horce Neeley returned Wednesday morning from St. Louis where they went to enlist in the navy. Both were rejected on account defective vision.

Sheriff Houston went to St. Louis Sunday with Ben and Jack Garner of Mountain township whom he turned over to officers at Jefferson Barracks. Ben is a deserter from the army and Jack is a deserter having failed to report to the local board when called.

Joe Ayers has resigned as conductor on the C. & W., Emmous Hawk is the new conductor.

Curtis Vaught and son of near Corsicana and W. C. Dixon of Wheaton were in Cassville Tuesday.

Mrs. J. S. McQueen was called to Joplin Saturday on account of the illness of her brother, E. H. Lambert, who has been seriously ill.

Dave Thomas and son, Fred, of near Monett and were at the county seat Monday.

C. H. Hadley is on the sick list.

Miss Mattie Baker is sick.

Mrs. Nana Hopkins begins her term as school Monday in the Mt. Zion district near Eagle Rock.

Charles Jeffries of Butterfield has withdrawn from the race for the Democratic nomination for the office of recorder.

It is reported that the M. E. Church building at Wheaton was moved from its foundation by the heavy wind Saturday night.

The trial of the Roseberry Patterson case brought a number of witnesses to Cassville Thursday from about Rocky comfort. Among them were: Andy Davison, T. J. Hill, Noah Anderson, Milton Long, G. W. Wyatt, T. J. Carnell, Joe Lamberson and Edgar and Noble Biggs.

Dr. West of Monett was in Cassville Thursday. He has offered his services to the government in the medical corps and is arranging his business affairs to go when called. Dr. Dabbs of Rocky comfort has been called within the last week and expects to report for duty July 5.

Burl Gowan Dead


Burl Gowan, a pioneer citizen of this county and an old Confederate soldier, passed away at his home south of Washburn Tuesday afternoon July 2 following an illness of long duration.

Burl Gowan was one of the county's most highly respected citizens and successful farmers. For the past year he had been in poor health and the news of his death came as no surprise to his many friends over the county.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock and internment made at the Roller cemetery.

Red Cross Notes


Mrs. Dixie Hobbs and Ethel Mitchell visited the Washburn branch Thursday.

Plenty of yarn at the Red Cross room for sweater and socks. Everybody urged to knit.

Miss Dixie Hobbs spent Wednesday in Butterfield giving instructions for the Red Cross work.

We received a nice box of surgical dressing and a box of bed socks from the Seligman branch this week.

During the month of June, 301 ladies registered at the Red Cross room, but there is room for more and plenty of work to be done.

The demand for socks and sweaters is great and our quota is 276 sweaters and 180 pairs of socks, which must be in by September. All ladies urged to speed up the knitting.

To Build Smelter at Seligman


Judge G. W. Finn of Seligman who has been here this week attending County Court, says that two of the Minneapolis, Minn., men who have obtained large lease holdings on lands about Seligman were in Seligman Saturday and Sunday and stated that they have been successful with the process of separating the valuable mineral from the red soil in the Seligman locality, and will spend from $75,000 to $100,000 there within the next few months in building a large smelter.

Messers Shobe and Baker, two of the managers of the company appeared to be more enthusiastic than ever over the prospects of the rich developments within the next few months.

The first smelter is to be built on land owned by a Judge Finn and lease to the company.
