Personal And Local


Miss Madelne Wear of Springfield is visiting Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Wear.

W. H. Martin went to Mt. Vernon Wednesday as a witness in the case of the state vs. Mark Ford.

Mrs. S. M. Trolinger went to Exeter Saturday for a visit with her sister, Mrs. Charles Kemper.

Charlotte Schilecker who has been attending a business college in Springfield has returned home. She will soon go with her parents to California.

A little three year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Robbins near Cassville was bitten Monday evening on one of her lower limbs by a copperhead snake. The limb was badly swollen as a result but out serious results.

Joab Bennett of Lawrence county and Wm. Fly of near Purdy were among those who transacted business at the county seat on the 15th.

R. W. Poplin has announced the Democratic nomination for County Clerk and J. C. Lowe for the Democratic nomination for County Collector.

Grant Evans of New Castle, Pa., spent a few days last week with his sister, Mrs. Lester Loftin, of near Mineral Springs. Young Evans is in the United States Navy. Having been granted a furlough he took advantage of it to make the trip.

L. F. Jones received a letter from his son, Linden of Sedalia, last week written from Jefferson Barricks stating that he had been called into the military service under the draft and would be sent to one of the southwestern training camps. Linden was married only a few weeks ago and with his wife visited here at that time.

Creed Hamilton returned Tuesday from Camp Funston where he spent a few days with his son, Lyman, who is in the training camp. He says Lyman is in good health. He expects to be transferred to another camp soon.

A large crowd attended the unveiling exercises given by the Butterfield Camp for the W. W. W. at the grave of M. A. Terry in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery northwest of Butterfield Sunday afternoon. The beautiful ritualistic ceremony of the order was carried out. The ceremony was in charge of Walter Ray. F. A. Freeze acting as Consul Commander. The addresses on the principles and work of the order was made by E. N. Meador. The music for the ceremony was in charge of Thos. Ferguson of Republic.

In a letter to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Smith, Lee Smith, a Cassville boy, writes that he has been transferred from a battleship to the city of Philadelphia. In his training he went to the battleship from Great Lakes, near Chicago. He is in good health and doing fine.

Sam Sherwood who has been at Bedford, Ind., for the past year is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Sherwood. Sam has been accepted for service in the Navy Hospital corps and will report for duty at the Great Lakes training camp May 28. He was tried for the past year to enter the regular navy service but had been rejected up account of light weight.

Attorneys James Talbert, J. S. Davis and Judge C. M. Landis went to Marshfield Sunday night to attend Circuit court. The case of Jasper McCary against the brothers of the late John McCary for a share of the John McCary estate, is to be tried at Marshfield this week. J. J. Edens, of this city went as a witness. C. W. Eden south of town also went as a witness.

Miss Jennie Hefley and Ralph Hudson were married Saturday, May 18, in this city. Judge C. M. Landis said the ceremony. Ralph is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Harris Hudson. Mrs. Hudson is a daughter of the late Lee Hefley. The REPUBLICAN joins their many friends in extending congratulations.

Sheriff Houston left Monday evening for Jefferson Arracks with J. M. Wilson whom he had arrested last week as a deserter from Ft. Riley. Wilson's home was in Stoddard County.

Cedar Bluff


Earl Brown left May 8 for St. Louis to enlist in the navy. He is not of draft age but has shown his patriotism by offering his services to his county. He is now at the Great Lakes training school, near Chicago.

Rocky Comfort


Mr. and Mrs. M. Alfred Sparks of Lanagan are visiting the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Draper, here at present.

Mrs. M. J. Patterson and daughter, Jewell, were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Grover Patterson.

Washburn Prairie


Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Smith and daughters, Ruby and Edna, visited Chas. Smith and family at Eagle Saturday night and attended the surprise dinner at Mr. Larecy's Sunday.

Washburn


A wedding interest to her many friends of Washburn was that of Miss Maye Howard and Gus Benoist at Susanville, Calif. The wedding which was a ring ceremony took place at the home of Mr. Benoist's sister, May 9 at 4 p.m. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Price. Only relatives were present. Mr. and Mrs. Benoist will make their home at Westwood, Calif.

Clyde Loftin is home on a 10 days furlough.

Mrs. Evans of Pennsylvania and two daughters and a sister-in-law and three children are visiting Mrs. Lester Loftin.

New Salem


Mrs. Bonnie Arnhart of Joplin came down Saturday and spent the day with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Roller. Her husband came Saturday night to visit his parents. They returned home Sunday night.

Death of Elizabeth Barcus


Elizabeth Barcus, widow of the late J. C. Barcus, died at her home in this city, Tuesday afternoon, May 21, at 3 o'clock, following an illness of three weeks of a complication of troubles.

Elizabeth C. Barcus was born November 24, 1861 in the state of Indiana. When a small girl her parents moved to Missouri and since that time she had lived in St. Clair, Newton and Barry Counties. She was married Feb. 11, 1883 to James James of Newton County. To this marriage one child was born, Lillian Branstetter, wife of C. H. Branstetter of Joplin who attended her mother during her last illness. Mr. James died Aug. 22, 1885. She was married to James Stansberry in Newton County, Apr. 25, 1887. To this marriage one child was born but died at the age of two years. Mr. Stansberry died in 1893. She was married to James Barcus in July 1895. No children were born to this marriage. She had lived in Cassville for about thirty years. She professed faith in Christ many years ago and was a member of the Christian church.

The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the home and interment made in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Celebrates 80th Birthday


The children of Frank Larecy assisted by their mother and a large number of neighbors and friends, gathered at the Larecy home in Eagle Rock Monday, May 20, and set a fine dinner in honor of his 80th birthday. He was completely surprised and appreciate very much the honor paid him.

His two sons, John and Will, who live at Hugo, Okla., came in the latter part of last week. John had to return home Saturday night on account of the illness of his boy who accompanied him on the trip. The other children of the family were present Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. Larecy have lived at Eagle Rock about 38 years. They were for many years engaged in the mercantile business there. They enjoy the esteem of a large circle of friends and acquaintances through the southeastern part of the county. They are both in fair health for people of their advanced years.

Rhea - Lamb


Rev. L. R. Lamb and Miss Ruby Rhea of Springfield, were married at 7:30 o'clock Sunday morning in the First Baptist Church of Springfield.

They completely "pulled one" on their friends. They were quietly motoring to the home of his parents at Warrensburg that night to prepare for the couple's reception.

The bride is a splendid young Greene county school teacher, having taught one successful term at Prairieview, north of town.

Rev. Lamb is pastor of the Firs Baptist Church here, and his friends are numbered by his acquaintances. Republic Monitor

Land Safely in France


Post Cards to home folks received Monday announced that Lester Hanes, Ralph Hawk, Byron Siler, Ralph Davenport and E. G. Douglas of Barry County had landed safely in France.

Hanes and Hawk are Cassville boys. Davenport attended the Cassville High school and is well known here.

Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Babb of this city have two sons in France, John and Bernard Babb.

Mr. and Mrs. George Joslin have a son in France, Vern Joslin.
