Taney County Mexican War Veteran Near End

With the Stars and Stripes fluttering in the Ozark breezes from a tall staff erected in his front yard, Captain J. R. Van Zandt, one of Taney County's two survivors of the Mexican War, is manifesting his patriotism and love for country even on his death bed. He is slowly dying from cancer.

When he began to get weaker recently, he had his friends erect a staff in his yard where from the window near his bed he might see the flag to follow into Mexico, sixty nine years ago and only wishes that he was young once more to serve his county on the field of battle. He is also a veteran of the Civil War.

Captain Van Zandt is one of the best known citizens of Taney County. He is past 90 years of age and had been vigorous and active up to the time that the malady from which he suffers caused him to become bedfast. In recent years he has occupied his time at gardening, bookkeeping and raising fine stock. Springfield Leader.

Capt. Van Zandt is a distant relative of deputy Sheriff Walter Van Zandt of this city.
