Arrested For Forgery


Constable C. A. Payne of McDonald township informed the REPUBLICAN while in the city Tuesday that on Monday evening he had arrested a man by the name of McGowen at Butterfield wanted at Russellville, Ark., on a charge of forgery.

N. P. Burns, the sheriff from Russellville came to Monett Monday morning and abut noon drove to Butterfield and gave Constable Payne the warrant to serve on McGowan and he was arrested that evening making no resistance. The sheriff left that night with his prisoner for Russellville.

Mr. McGowan had been in the Butterfield neighborhood for about three months but the crime he is charged with was said to have been committed about four years ago.

Probate Judge C. M. Landis united in marriage Otis Ashby and Miss Gladys Croft of Tulsa, Okla., Monday night at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Waddell.

Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Denton and little son of Lebanon, Mo., formerly of Washburn spent last week in Chicago visiting Mr. Dent's sister, Mrs. Joe Hickman.

Mrs. Chas. Ray and daughter Mrs. Glenn Pearl, went to Kansas City Saturday night to visit Mrs. C. C. Martin.

Dr. W. T. Bailey and brother Blaine, were at Rocky Comfort last week to see their father who is quite sick with rheumatism.

Rev. J. T. Brattin preached at Kings Point in Dade County Sunday.

Stella Dodson of Exeter is visiting in Seligman.

Mrs. John McAnespy is very poorly.

Ellis Aldridge has purchased a Ford Car and intends to go west in it in the spring.

Roy Williamson came in from Oklahoma last week after his mother's wagon and team. Mrs. Higgs had gone to Oklahoma to make her home with her sons, Roy and Lester Williamson.

Washburn Prairie


Mrs. Coward came down from Butterfield the first of last week to visit her father, W. M. Varner.

Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Burnett of Washburn, Jake Weston, of Springdale, Ark., Kell and Andy Weston of Kansas and Walter Weston of Exeter all spent last Friday night with their brother, Henry Weston and family.

Aunt Polly Weston died Wednesday, Feb. 7th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. A. Burnett at Washburn. She died of heart trouble and pneumonia but she had been an invalid for the past year as a result of a fall that broke her hip. She was converted when young and united with the Baptist church. She leaves to mourn her death nine sons and two daughters. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. T. Brattin at the Burnett home Thursday morning after which the body was conveyed to the Roller Cemetery and laid to rest by the side of her husband.

Mr. and Mrs. Luther Haddock and children visited Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Thompson Sunday.

Guy and Joe Reams of Pasley visited at the home of their uncle, Chas. Hefley and family Saturday night and Sunday.

Mrs. J. C. Morgan Dies


After a long and painful illness, Mrs. J. C. Morgan passed in her eternal rest Tuesday morning, Jan. 30, 1917, at 7:30 o'clock.

Charlotte Edith Fleetwood was born in Shiawassee County, Michigan, July 4, 1874. At the age of 4 years she moved with her parents to Barry county, Missouri, where she lived till her death. She professed faith in Christ at the age of 13 years. Three years later she united with the New Site Baptist Church of which she remained a faithful member till the Master said, "it is enough". For a number of years she was a teacher of a class of young people in Sunday school. The beautiful floral offering by the class shows how they appreciated their teacher. The young men of the class acting as pall bears.

She was married to J. C. Morgan of Wilsey, Kan., May 2, 1916.

The funeral was held at New Site Church, conducted by Eld. C. M. Smith assisted by Luther Carlin.

She leaves a husband, mother, two sisters and two brothers and a host of friends to mourn their loss, but their loss is her eternal gain. This ends a life of 42 years, 6 months and 26 days.

An Aged Mother Gone


Mrs. Polly Weston, an aged and highly respected citizen, died Wednesday night, Feb. 7, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Elijah Burnett, near Washburn, of pneumonia, aged about 82 years.

Mrs. Weston had been an invalid for over a year caused by a fall, which had broken one of her hips. She was the widow of the late Simon Weston and for years lived in the Pasley neighborhood south of Cassville.

She was the mother of James Weston, residing south of Cassville, Henry and Mrs. Elijah Burnett of Washburn, Marion of Oklahoma, Andy of Uniontown, Kan., Walter living northwest of this city, John, William, Kelley and Mrs. Polly Yearns of Arkansas.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. Burnett near Washburn by Rev. J. T. Brattin of this city and the remains were taken to the Roller Cemetery for interment.
