Headline A Successful Day for Barry County Schools
Text Graduation exercises for the pupils of the rural school spelling and declamatory contest made Saturday, April 26, the most successful day for the year in the school working this county. The exercises were very creditable and were enjoyed by many citizens and the teachers over the county.

About one hundred boys and girls were present from various parts of he county to receive their diplomas won by their successful completion of the eighth grade course of study offered in the rural schools of this county. The certificates of graduation were awarded by Prof. W. H. Lynch of the Springfield State Normal School. His address was very instructive and was enjoyed by all present. After the graduation exercises, the graduates and Superintendent Hanks assembled on the west side of the opera house and J. W. Hisey took a photo of the crowd. This had been asked by the state superintendent to be used in the annual report this year.

Immediately after the graduation exercises were over the spelling contest was held. Twenty four pupils entered this contest. H. P. Sons, Prof. Ben Ray, W. S. Francis and Lora Reese were appointed judges of this contest and Profs. J. R. Wallen and C. E. Wilhite were the enunciators. In this contest each pupil was given 2100 words to be written. The words were given in two different lists with 100 words in each list. The result was announced by the judges was follows:

First prize, Jewel Perriman, Jenkins school.

Second Prize, Rae Berryhill, Washburn school. [Research note: Rae was a daughter of Jefferson Davis & Clara Elizabeth (Hancock) Berryhill.]

The first prize is all expenses paid to the state spelling contest to be held the second week in May at Jefferson City. The second prize was $5 in gold and the third prize was $3.

J. R. Wallen awarded the above prizes in a very appropriate manner on educational lines.

The declamatory contest was held Saturday evening at 8 o'clock. Nine pupils entered this contest. They were Mary Lynn Hindman, Oklahoma, subject, "Sandaphon", Lyman Carne, Gunter "Supposed Speech of John Adams"; Elaine Manley, Cassville, "When Jack Comes Late"; Royel Ellis, Clay Hill, "The Monster Curse"; Florence Courdin, Pleasant Dale. "Shadows on the the Blind"; Clyde Combs, Pleasant Dale, "Eulogy Lafayette"; Rae Berryhill, Washburn, A subject on Temperance; Margaret Hodges, Cassville, "One of the Heroes";' Mary Stewart, Hailey, "Hill Granda."

The judges in this contest were John Swindle, W. G. Clugston, and Miss Lora Reese. The first prize the E. N. Meador Gold Medal and $5 in gold was awarded to Royel Ellis of Clay Hill. The second prize was given to Elaine Manley, Cassville and the third prize, $2, to Florence Cordin of Pleasant Dale.

S. J. Salyer of Cassville made the presentation address and awarded the prizes. His address was devoted to education work and his remarks were full of encouragement for the rural schools of Barry County.

Superintendent Hankins is highly pleased with the results of the contest and the graduation exercise. He is grateful to the citizens of Cassville and over the county for their liberal assistance in making the occasion a success and one long remembered in the school work in this county for the year 1912-1913.
