Research Note: This could be the same James A. Cole who was a son of Mary Margaret Simpson and her husband Richard Thomas Cole. Richard was killed in Barry Co., MO on Feb 25, 1875. Family lore states that Richard Cole was shot at George Reed's house.

Gary Ball added: "I think this may have happened at George and Sarah Reed's place. I didn't hear any names, but I remember a story Dad told one time. A deputy Sheriff came there to arrest someone for supposedly stealing some corn. The deputy claimed the guy picked up a rock and tried to knock him in the head with it, so he shot him. The way I took it from the way he told the story, that was just an excuse to shoot him. Any way, they carried him into the house and laid him on the bed. Of course he had his hand over the wound and he placed his hand on the wall above the bed leaving a bloody hand print there. After he died and they started cleaning up, the stain was permanent. No amount of washing and scrubbing would remove it. They even took a broadaxe and tried removing a layer of wood from the log, but that stain remained as long as the house stood. I don't know if this is the same incident or not. But I think it is possible. Gary"

Darla Marbut added - Gary Ball's Grandfather was Silas Ball brother to my Great Grandfather, Finas Ball. They were son's of William Valentine Ball who married Sarah Elizabeth Garrett. After William's death she married George Reed who is mentioned in the story.
