Obituary Cassville, MO, March 9, 1911 "Aged Minister Passes Away - Rev. Samuel Babb died at the home of his son, J. W. Babb, at Hugo, OK, Friday March 3, 1911, at the advanced age of 83 years, of general debility. Samuel Babb was born in Tennessee April 10, 1829. There he grew to manhood undergoing all the hardships and privations of the early pioneers. At the age of nineteen years he professed faith in Christ and at twenty-three he was ordained to preach, and became an active minister. He preached his last sermon when 81 years old. The sermon was preached at the request of friends of Grant, OK, where he then lived. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Roberts in Tennessee in 1848. Mrs. Babb died a few years ago. To them were born ten children, two of whom died in infancy, the remaining eight are living. They are: Mrs. Sarah Lowder, Cassville; J. W. Babb, Hugo, Okla; Miss Rhoda Babb, Washburn; Mrs. Minta Wallace, Fairland, Okla; Mrs. Lena Heffley, Cassville; Mrs. Tina Bradley, Miami, Okla; M. B. Babb, Cassville; Mrs. Laura Ezra, Mt. Vernon. As a great many other Tennessee did, he caught the desire to move west and came to Missouri. For about thirty years the family has lived in Barry County. Samuel Babb was a man who in every sense of the term lived up to all the tenants of the Golden Rule. He was a conscientious Christian gentleman, a man of earnest convictions and a man of deep religious temperament. His friends were always numbered by his acquaintances. The body was shipped to Cassville and buried at the Corinth cemetery after funeral services held Saturday afternoon by Rev. J. W. Jones."

Directions to Corinth Cemetery: Hwy 112 south out of Cassville 5 1/2 miles, turn right on Hwy AA 2.4 miles

From B.F. Babb, descendant of Samuel's daughter Rhoda - Samuel established a Methodist Church south of Cassville at Corinth. The land was given to him by Doc Hefley. B.F. says the church is still there. It is now called Corinth Community Church. The cemetery where Samuel and Elizabeth are buried is nearby.

Aunt Sarah Lowder Dies Last Saturday Was a Victim of Paralysis at Age of 80; Lived in Cassville Many Years

Mrs. Sarah Lowder, 80 years old, died Saturday morning, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mattie Baker, of paralysis, in Monet. Mrs. Lowder was the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Samuel Babb and was born in Tennessee. The family came to Barry County in an early day and she spent most of her life in Cassville and vicinity. Mrs. Baker is her only surviving child. She leaves one brother, Bascom Babb of Cassville, three sisters, Mrs. Dock Hefley of Cassville, Mrs. Tina Bradley and Mrs. Witt Essary of Miami, OK. A brother, J W Babb of Grant, OK died Nov 6 and a sister Mrs. Shadd Wallen Sr. of Fairland OK, died last July at the depot in Monett, after a stroke of paralysis. Mrs. Lowder was a Christian woman and a member of the Methodist Church at Cassville. Aunt Sarah, as she was familiarly known, had been in failing health for several months. Her condition became more serious a few weeks ago, at which time she was taken to the home of her daughter in Monett, where the end came peacefully last Saturday. Funeral services were conducted at the Horine Funeral Home of this city, Sunday afternoon by Rev. J S McQueen of Wheaton, after which the remains were laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery. Many beautiful floral emblems were received the bereaved family from friends near and far, as evidence of the high esteem in which this excellent character was held. Aunt Sarah resided many years in Cassville and was loved by everyone. Pallbearers were Harry Windes, Cleo Hawk, Evan Shore, Elias Horine, Raymond Williams and John Ray. Flower girls were Mrs. C H Hadley, Mrs. Charles Ray, Mrs. Dora Talbaert, Mrs. Bon Manley, Mrs. Henry Plantenbury, Mrs. W T Ward. A quartette composed of Mrs. Glen Pearl, Mrs. John Ray, Clint Blythe and Chas Willis rendered music at the service.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Susan C. Babb, 83 years old were conducted Thursday, December 21, by the Rev. S.F. Young, in the Methodist Church at Grant. Burial was in the Grant cemetery. Mrs. Babb is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Manton Nelson, of Grant; Mrs. T. A. Marbut of Hugo, and Mrs. Barney Bush of Monett, Missouri. Three sons survive also: Jack Babb of Grant. H. A. Babb of Hugo, and Charles Babb of Amarillo, Tx. Arrangements were under direction of the Snow Funeral Home.

Most sources list date of birth at 1843, however death certificate and tombstone indicate 1848.

From "Back to Barry 1989" Rhoda never married.

From B. F, Babb and John Babb descendants of Rhoda: Rhoda became pregnant while the family was still in TN. Samuel was a preacher, so probably the shame of an unmarried pregnant daughter made them travel by wagon around 1875 from TN to Washburn, MO. Rhoda never married and died an old maid. Her son Emmett married the daughter of the family where his mother served as a maid.

From Rod Hefley, Atchison, Kansas - Rhoda gave birth to an illegitimate son when she was a young woman, which I guess was something of a scandal for a preacher's daughter at that time.

From the Cassville Republican , Thursday, Weekly Paper, February 6, 1913 "After many years of intense suffering from dropsy, rheumatism and other diseases, Rhoda Babb, daughter of the late Rev. Samuel and Elizabeth Babb passed away Thursday Evening of last week at the home of her son, E. B. Babb, in Washburn. The deceased was born in Hancock County, Tenn, about 67 years ago and came with her parents to Missouri in 1879. Her parents settled near Washburn and later lived in Cassville where she grew to womanhood. Early in life she became a member of the Methodist church and had lived a consistent member until death. She is also survived by four sisters and two brothers; Mrs. Sarah Lowder of Cassville, Joe Babb of Grant, Okla, Mrs. Wattie Wallen of Fairland, Okla, Mrs. Tina Bradley of Miami, Okla, M. B. Babb of Cassville. Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at the Corinth Church and interment made in the Corinth cemetery."
