Mr. A. Vangeuder request us to say that he has prepared a diagram of the Cassville Military Grave Yard, at his office in this city [Springfield], and will give any information to the friends of those included in the above list. Some one hundred and fifty more graves at the same place cannot be identified, on account of the headboards having been inscribed with pencil, and the few inscriptions now legible will soon be faded as to make it impossible to find the resting place of these noble patriots with any degree of certainty. Should any one desire to have the grave of their deceased friend provided with a suitable enclosure or headboard, Mr. A Vangeuder will, upon application to him, make the desired improvement.

NOTES

(1) Messrs. Ingram & Teed, to whom this report was addressed, were the editors of the Missouri Patriot.

(2) Many of the soldiers listed here were wounded at the battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas which occured March 6-8, 1862. Two weeks later, a representative of the Western Sanitary Commission arrived at Cassville and found 400 wounded from the battle “lying in the clothes they fought in, stiff and dirty with blood and soil.” Quoted by William L. Shea & Earl J. Hess, Pea Ridge, Civil War Campaign in the West (1992), p. 273. In an appendix this book lists the units engaged in the battle.

(3) All or most of these soldiers were reburied at the National Cemetery in Springfield: http://www.interment.net/data/us/mo/greene/springnat/index.htm. A quick check of the first 20 names on the list showed 15 listed in Springfield, sometimes with additional information. The others may have been moved, but their identities lost.

(4) The list includes men from the 14th MO State Militia Cavalry, which was stationed in Cassville in late 1862 and early 1863. There is an excellent web site for this unit, which includes official reports of its engagements, complete rosters and biographies of two Barry County men: The link that Bob provided no longer works so it was removed in 2013. 14th Missouri State Militia Calvary

(5) The abbreviations and punctuation used in the original list vary from one entry to the next. For the sake of simplicity and clarity, I standardized the entries.
