Jay's Notes: I had known of this grave for a while but hadn't gotten around to photographing it. It is on the property of Odell and Joyce Mattox, 4139 State Highway WW, Aurora, MO. I would bet it's less than a mile south of Williams Cemetery. It is on an 80 acre tract, and it specifies on the deed that one acre was to be set aside for a graveyard. The Old Wire Road passes through the property, just to the north of the woods and where the grave is. On the western edge of the property, and on the adjoining property, it was said that there were once 17 buildings, like a small village. Mr. Mattox said that when his grandfather first married he and his wife lived in one of those buildings for a time. Mr. Mattox said that land was once owned by the railroad. It has since been deemed a Century Farm with the Mattox family. It was thought that, since Camp Bliss was just west, over the next hollow, that there was a lot of Civil War action there. It was thought that the Battle of Upshaw's Farm was fought on that very property. However, after a rudimentary search and investigation by Missouri State University, not enough tangible evidence could be found to affirm or deny that claim. Mr. Mattox was not sure, but he said he thought there was a possibility that the Trail of Tears passed over his property as well. At any rate, Mr. Mattox was very generous with his time and said that if anyone wanted to visit that grave, especially family of the departed, he would be more than happy to take anyone that wants to go. It's hard to find if you don't know exactly where it is, though.
