His wife was Margaret Tennessee Woodard, daughter of George Washington and Sarah S. (Spurlock) Woodard. - Wheaton Journal, Dec. 24, 1936 - Dr. L. B. Northcutt, who was a practicing physician in Barry Co. for 34 years, died at his home at San Juan, TX, in the Rio Grande Valley Sunday, Dec. 13. The body was brought to Purdy on Wed. night, Dec. 16. Funeral services were held in the Baptist Church at Purdy Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. A. P. Cameron of Tulsa and Rev. Ben Crawford of Purdy. Burial was in the Washburn Prairie cemetery where a short service was held. L. B. Northcutt, the son of Mr. and Mrs. T. D. Northcutt, was born at Weatherford, TX, 66 years ago. When he was four years old his parents moved to a farm north of the present town of Fairview. He was married 42 years ago to Miss Margaret Woodward of Powell. They were the parents of 18 children, among whom were triplets. One of the triplets, Joe, of Tulsa, is living. The others died. Besides his wife, he is survived by the following children: Duncan, Jennings, OK; Mrs. Roger Davis, Washburn; Grady of San Juan, TX; Mrs. Sid Henry Purdy; L. B. of Fittstown, OK; Dillard of Asher, OK; Joe and Woodrow, Tulsa; Mrs. Leonard Spencer, Pueblo, CO; George of Seminole, OK; Pascal and Miss Frances of Ozona, TX; and Mrs. Cap Miller of McAllen, TX. He also leaves 20 grandchildren; two brothers, Sidney and Jennings of KS and three sisters; Mrs. Lily Holman, Mrs. Dan Chanberlain, San Angelo, TX; and Mrs. Flora Vaughn of Ballinger, TX. The late Dr. George Northcutt of Seligman was a brother. Dr. Northcutt had practiced medicine for 45 years. He was a typical country doctor whose life was devoted to healing the sick. No night was too dark or no day too stormy for him to respond to a call. He spent many a night at a sick bed to see his patient past a crisis. He left this county about eleven years ago to go to the Rio Grande Valley. Research Note: February 11, 1905, Cassville Democrat Samuel Oakley, an old and respected citizen of Washburn, died Monday. For some time mortification had set in on his feet. Finally his feet and legs perished away, up to his body resulting in his death. Physicians held consultation in regard to amputating his feet some time ago and they decided he could not stand the operation. John was born to Carl and Bette Lorraine "Dee Dee" (Hickman) Oldaker on January 29, 1957, in Wichita, Kansas, later moving with his family to Tulsa, his true "hometown." He attended Tulsa Edison High School and Tulsa Community College before beginning a career in the medical field. John served first as an x-ray technician and then as a surgical technician, primarily at St. Francis Hospital, Eastern Oklahoma Ear, Nose and Throat, Inc., and Hillcrest Medical Center. Eight years ago, John joined the team at Lowe's, where he applied his exceptional skills at working with his hands and proved himself a trustworthy, supportive co-worker. He was a space-exploration and innovation enthusiast, fulfilling a cherished dream when he attended the final space shuttle launch (Atlantis) in July, 2011. John leaves behind his mother, Lorraine ("Dee Dee") Cook, his brothers David and Jamie Oldaker, and his sisters Lachlan Oldaker and Carol Mason, as well as several nieces and nephews. Research Note: - Son of Thomas G. Palmer and Melissa J. Sharp. - Cassville Republican, July 22, 1909 - Frank Amos Palmer, at one time a citizen of Cassville, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. S. L. Warf, in Exeter, July 16. He was born at Glenwood, Mills Co., IA, Jan. 12, 1853. His parents soon after moved to Plattsmouth, NE, where they built the first residence in the Town. In 1877 he was married to Miss Sadie Porter of Creston. IA. To them were born two children; Harry L. Palmer and Mrs. (Della Annette) Lewis Warf of Exeter. His wife died, nine years ago at Washburn. For the past 20 years he had been a marine engineer, Memphis, TN, being his home for sometime past. He was taken sick at Atlanta, GA. He went to Hot Springs, AR and from there was taken to a hospital at Memphis and from there came to Exeter on May 25. Mr. Palmer was a man of intelligence and had traveled extensively. He was a consistent member of the M. E. church and a member of the M. E. B. A. of TN. Funeral services were held at the S. L. Warf residence Friday afternoon and interment made at the Washburn Prairie cemetery beside his wife, Saturday morning. - July 24, 1909, Cassville Democrat - Exeter News: Frank A. Recent Accident Hastened Death - James J. Park, a resident of the Washburn community since Civil War days, a pioneer teacher and prominent in public affairs, passed-away at Aurora Sunday evening, Jan. 21, at the home of a sister of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Garland Park, where he was being nursed after leaving the hospital following an accident in which he was seriously injured. Funeral services which were largely attended were held Tuesday afternoon at the Washburn Prairie church, conducted by Rev. R. M. Patrick, pastor of the Christian church in Cassville. Interment was made in the cemetery near the church, directed by the Horine-Culver Funeral Service. A quartet composed of Mrs. Glenn Pearl, Mrs. John Ray, Chas. Willis and W. C. Blythe, sang. The Masonic burial service was given at the grave, Masons from his home lodge at Washburn and from Pythagoras Lodge No. 383, Cassville, participating. He was born in Lawrence County, Ark., July 16, 1846. During the Civil War he served in the Confederate army. After the close of the war he located In the Washburn community and that had since been his home. In his early manhood years he taught school. He also read law and at times practiced law. He had always taken an active part in all matters of interest to his county and to the community in which he lived. There were no more cheerful, good natured men than James Park. He had a wide acquaintance and his pleasant disposition made him friends wherever he went. He was married to Miss Margaret "Maggie" Llllard on July 6, 1873 in Barry Co., MO. To them six children were born, four of whom survive him. Mrs. Park and two children preceded him in death. The living children are: Mrs. Demah Marcum of Joplin, Mrs. Jennie Roller of Idaho, Mrs. Gwendolyn Davis of Washburn, and Garland Park, also of Washburn. Late one evening about December 1, while crossing the highway near the home of his son. Garland, Mr. Park was struck and' knocked to the pavement by a passing automobile. He sustained a severe shock and a crushed ankle. Operated on Several Days Ago - Joseph Starwood "Kid" Park, son of James J. Park and the late Maggie Park, died at a Springfield hospital Sunday where he had been operated on several days previous for appendicitis. the immediate cause of his death was said to have been a blood clot going from the would to the brain. He had been talking just a few moments before he passed away. "Kid" Park, as he was known to everyone, was born near Washburn May 9, 1887 where he grew to manhood. He was liked by all who knew him. On June 4, 1917 he was married to Miss Alene Sparkman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sol Sparkman. He is survived by his widow, his aged father, J. J. Park, one brother, G. L. Par of Washburn, three sisters, Mrs. J. L. Marcum of Joplin, Mrs. W. D. Roller of Caldwell, ID, and Mrs. G. C. Davis of Washburn. PARK PASSES - A beautiful and sweet life with every act for good, with a lovely disposition that spread sunshine and happiness in the home life, that made impressions that will not be erased by time, has been closed and her spirit was wafted to that celestial city, where she will dwell eternally, because she accepted the teachings of Christ and obeyed them. Her loved ones can meet and mingle with her in that happy land, by making the effort. Miss Maggie Lillard was born near the spot she died Nov. 20, 1851, and was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs. James Lillard, old and respected citizens of this county, who came to this section in the early part of the forties and lived and died there. On July 6, 1878, she and James J. Park were married and to this union five children were born and all survive the mother, who are: Mrs. J.G. Markum, Joplin, D.L. and J.S. Park and Mrs. Roger Davis of Washburn and Mrs. W.B. Roller, Idaho, who were all with the mother, when her spirit took its heavenward flight to eternal bliss. She was a consistent member of the Christian Church and had lived the life of a faithful, that insures to her relatives a future and happy life. She died May 26, 1920, at 4 a.m., as the sweet forest birds were heralding the approach of day, mother earth covered with rich velvet green and the breezes through the forest trees, whispered sweet peace, everlasting peace. She died of stomach trouble, aged 68 years, 5 months and 1 day, at the late Liliard home and her remains were laid to rest near where her father and mother are buried, after funeral services by Rev. Helen's Post: Berryman Turner Parr died near Washburn Prairie in 1849 - a Presbyterian Church publication published an obituary that gave the date of death as March 31, 1849, and that he was 51 years old, so we think he was born 1798. Rev B. T. Parr was a Presbyterian preacher. He did show up as "B.T. Parr" in some records. His wife's name was Martha George. Donna's Note: Berryman T. At the death of her mother, she and some other siblings were put in The Springfield Children's Home. She was taken out of the home at age 4 and raised by foster parents, Theodore and Minnie Meadows of Mano, Missouri. Her first years of school were at the East Fork School on Rock Creek. The family later moved to Cassville, Missouri where she graduated with the Class of 1950. Following graduation she worked at the Standard Mutual Insurance Company of Cassville until her marriage. On November 24, 1953 she was united in marriage to Leon Laverne Paul of Washburn at the First Baptist Church of Cassville by Rev. O.V. Dodson. In 1970 she was saved and baptized into Washburn First Baptist Church. She served as Sunday School Teacher 29 years, working with classes from Nursery to Adult Women. She served as Church Clerk for 26 years and Church Historian over 27 years. She had also been a leader of Brownie and Girl Scout Troops, 4-H, Extension Council Member, represented Barry County in 1972 as a member of the Farm Family of the year. She worked along with her husband in their Grade A Dairy and beef operations. In the 1970's she began writing poetry. Several have been published but most were just shared with family and special friends. Charlene was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Leon L. Paul; her parents, Charles and Clella Barber; foster parents, Theodore and Minnie Meadows; foster sister, Lucille Easley and husband Everett; two half-brothers, Irwin Hesterlee and Roy Howard; three brothers, George R. Barber, Stanley G. Barber and Ed Stewart (Cecil Barber); one sister, Madeleine Rose (Barber) Taylor; the youngest sister has never been found; two granddaughters, Shelby Lynn Paul and Brett Diane Paul; one niece, Helen L. They had three daughters, Minnie Lund, Estella Woodruff and Ella Mooney and was a Civil War Veteran. He was a son of Orlando and Asentha (Goddard) Pease. Both of his parents died in Holmesville, Gage Co., NE, but were born in Hartford Co., CT. They are buried in Stark Cemetery. After his move to Barry County, James owned a saddle and harness shop in Washburn. He and Janetta lived at the top of Greasy Creek hill on the Corneilus Westfall place and grew stawberries. James Pease used Pete and Dolly, a pair of mules to plow his garden and tend his berry patches. His ancestry can be traced and proven back to Gov. William Bradford who came on the Mayflower - February 1, 1917, Thursday, Cassville Republican, Barry Co., MO: AN AGED FATHER PASSED AWAY James A. Pease for many years a resident of Washburn passed from time to eternity on Jan. 20, following a brief illness, age 76 years, 11 months and 20 days. James A. Pease, was born in Winsted, Conn., and there grew to early manhood. When the call to arms came during our civil strife he enlisted in Co. E. 7th Conn. Infantry and served until Sept. 12, 1864 when he was discharged. He followed the stars and stripes from Manassas to Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, also the blood trail through the seven days fight in the wilderness and to the final Appomattox and then proudly marched through Washington. He went west to Nebraska with his parents who located on a homestead near Beatrice, Neb., in 1868. He was married on March 1, 1876, to Nettie Fetrow. To this union were born three children, Miss Stella at home, Mrs. J. H. Mooney of Washburn and Mrs. Ernest Lund of Cedar, Kan., who with the widow survive him. He is also survived by one brother, Geo. L. Pease, of Beatrice, Neb., and eight grandchildren. He left Nebraska in 1895 and moved to Springfield, Mo., where he remained a short time. From there he went to Washburn where he resided until death. He united with the Methodist church thirty years ago and had lived a consistent Christian life, loved and honored by his family and beloved by those who knew him, and his loyalty to his Master is a healing balm to his family that he has gone to his home above. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. D. T. Hutchison, assisted by Rev. Bowers, of the M. E. Church and Interment made in the Washburn cemetery. Research Note: Phyllis' Note: Although there are no dates on this tombstone, Phyllis Long is convinced that this is the great grandfather of Elvis. She said she knew he was buried in Barry Co. from newspaper items published at the time of his death. His full name was Jesse Elvetus Dunnan Presley, Jr. and he was the Great Grandfather of Elvis Aaron Presley. - Mexican Veterans - The following embraces the names of Mexican War Veterans or their widows residing in Barry County at the close of 1887: Presley, D. of O’Day. - Dunning Presley Jr. was born on July 1, 1827 in Monroe County, Tennessee. On November 1, 1847 at the age of 20 he enlisted at Knoxville as a private in Captain Jno. C. Vaughn's Company C of the 5th Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers. His regiment served in the War with Mexico, and between February and April of 1848 he was in San Juan, Mexico, and in May 1848 he was at National Bridge, Mexico. By July 2, 1848 he was on board ship returning to the United States where he was discharged at Memphis on July 20th. On November 7th he was issued a warrant for 160 acres of land based on his army service. It was sent to him in care of Rufus Smith in Madisonville, Tennessee. Dunning returned home to his wife and eldest daughter whom he had left in Tennessee. He had married Elizabeth probably about 1845 in North Carolina or Tennessee and to this union were finally born five children: Elvira E. in 1846, Elizabeth in 1848, Joshua in 1851, Dunning in 1852, and Nancy Jane in 1854. Elizabeth died about 1860, and soon thereafter, leaving his children probably with relatives, Dunning found himself in northeastern Mississippi. On August 15, 1861 he married a second time in Itawamba County, Mississippi, to Martha Jane Wesson. As in his first marriage, he soon went off to war again. On May 11, 1863 he enlisted at Grenada, Mississippi, in Company E, Hamm's Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry. Perhaps, like many other Civil War soldiers, he was concerned about his family back home and temporarily deserted in order to investigate their circumstances, because from January 18 to June 30, 1864 he was listed as deserted and absent without leave. He returned to his unit for the final roll call. After the war, Dunning left Martha Jane and returned to his first family in Tennessee. Martha Jane had taken up and married Steele, and in 1868 she died in childbirth with their first born. Dunning eventually found himself in Missouri where he met and married his 3rd wife, Harriet Henrietta Toy on March 18, 1882 in Benton County, Arkansas.
