His father moved his family around trying to survive the war looking for a better place to live. Stephan opened up one time to tell the story of himself, his mother and an aunt who were captured and put on a train en route to one of the German concentration camps. The train was stopped and all occupants were allowed to get out and run. They were given a ten minute head start. Stephan and those family members with him were able to make it to Austria where they were able to secure immigration to Australia using Holland as their country of birth. Research Note: He was the son of Norman G. and Dove (Edmondson) LeCompte. On November 28, 1948, he was united in marriage to Barbara Zane Boyd and to this union three sons were born. Preceding him in death were his parents, and one brother, DeVere LeCompte who passed away in 1952. Bill grew up and received his education at Cassville, graduating from Cassville High School with the Class of 1946 and then attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Bill owned and operated the LeCompte's Building Center from 1947 until his death. The business had been started by his father, Norman G. LeCompte in 1937. Bill was a fifty year member of both the Abou Ben Adhem Shrine and Pythagoras Lodge Number 383, a fifty year member of the Cassville Rotary Club, serving as club president in 1963-1964 and as the long-time sergeant at arms. He served as Cubmaster and was a board member of the Boy Scout Troop 76. From 1967 until 1985 Bill served as Cassville Mayor and was a city councilman from 1965 through 1967. He was currently serving on the Industrial Development Corporation as vice-chairman. Bill was a member of Cassville Chamber of Commerce for more than fifty years, receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award for 1991 and 1992. She married second Monroe Betterman who shot her. Cassville Republican, Thursday, July 17, 1919 - Murders Wife - Monroe Betterton who lived for a time at Monett shot and killed his wife, Alzada Betterton in Vinita, Okla., Wednesday July 9th. Three shots were fired, one of which passed through the heart killing her instantly. Mrs. Betterton was before she was married, Miss Alzada Whittington. She was a sister of R. W. Whittington of Eagle Rock. She was first married to Eli Lockwood. About six moths ago she and Monroe Betterton were married. At the June term of the Barry county circuit court she was granted a divorce. Shortly after the divorce was granted her, Betterton called upon her and forced her to agree to a remarriage. Then a day or two later went to Mt. Vernon and were married and went to Vinita to visit Betterton's family. While at the home of one of his son's without any warning whatever, Betterton place himself in a room of the home where he could safeguard any attempt at escape and when his wife entered the room began shooting. Three shots were fired, one taking effect in an arm, one entered a lung and the third shot which penetrated the heart caused instant death. R. W. Whittington received a message of the murder at once and went to Vinita, had the body of his sister embalmed, brought it to Eagle Rock Thursday for interment. Betterton was at once arrested and lodged in jail upon a charge of murder. One of his boys and a little girl saw the shooting and have told the officers just how it occurred. A few years ago he was convicted of murder of his second wife, sentenced to life imprisonment but later paroled. Mrs. Betterton leaves four children by her first marriage one brother, R. W.
