Research Note: Son of Absolom/Osborn Adcock and Martha Emily Morton. - February 22, 1908, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Rev. Willoughby Adcock Dies: Sunday Feb 9, 1908, the Rev. Willoughby Adcock passed to the great beyond at the residence of Rob Stubblefield, south of town of heart trouble and dropsy, aged 80 years, and six months. He was born in Rockingham County, VA, and came to this county in 1858, with his parents, Mr. Osborn and Mrs. Emily Adcock, who located 5 miles out on the Washburn road. When the war came Willoughby Adcock, enlisted in the Confederate Army and at its close he returned to this county where he has since lived. He was a very peaceable and quiet citizen and enjoyed the respect and confidence of all his acquaintances. He was a member of the M. E. Church and a brother to John Adcock of Washburn. January 16, 1913, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Washburn Prairie News: Uncle John Adcock who lived at Washburn was buried here Sunday evening at two o'clock. Short funeral services were conducted at the grave by P. H. Hodge. Cassville Republican, Thursday, January 16, 1913 - Old Citizen Dies: John Adcock, an old and pioneer citizen of Barry County, passed away at his home in Washburn about 12 o'clock Saturday at the advanced age of 84 years. His death was due to old age and Bright's disease. Mr. Adcock was born in Virginia where he was reared to manhood and came to Missouri in 1856 with his parents who settled on a farm north of Washburn. There and in Washburn, he has lived since, until his death. Soon after coming to this county he was married to Martha George to whom survives. Ten children were born to this union, five of who survive. They are Chas. Adcock of Okmulgee, Okla., John Adcock of Wheaton, Mrs. Kate Westmoreland of Kansas City, Mrs. Dixie Gullies and W. B. Adcock of Washburn. Short funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. P. H. Hodge of Washburn and remains interred at the Washburn Prairie Cemetery. Adcock Dies at Washburn After Brief Illness - "Daughter of Late Frank Windes Succumbs After She Falls in Yard While Washing Family Car - "Mrs. William B. Adcock, old time and beloved citizen, who has lived all her life at Washburn, passed away at her home Saturday morning, following an attack of apoplexy which struck her Thursday morning while washing the family car in the yard of their home. "Little Miss Mary Ellen Bryant, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lindsey Bryant prominent Washburn citizens who lived just cross the street from the Adcock home, started to school that morning, and her attention was attracted by Mrs. Adcock, who was lying on the ground in the yard. Quickly returning home she informed her mother of this splendid lady's condition, who ran to the home and assisted in removing her into the home. Medical aid was immediately summoned but she never regained consciousness and passed on the following Saturday morning. "Mollie Windes Adcock was born at Washburn, Mo., Dec. 30, 1870, was 63 years, two months and 24 days old, and was a daughter of the later B. F. and Crocia Windes old time and honorable citizens of that community during their life time. She was married to Wm. B. Adcock on March 10, 1892, and to this union was born eight children, all of whom, with the splendid father survive. They are two sons, W. L. Adcock and Clark Adcock of Washburn, and six daughters, Mrs. F. A. Thomas, St Paul, Ark; Mrs. R. R. Wilson, Muskogee, Okla.; Mrs. Cline Park, Joplin; Mrs. T. J. Simpson and Mrs. Bryant Sparkman of Washburn, and Miss Norma of the home. She also leaves two brothers, H. R. Windes of Cassville and R. A. Windes of Washburn, and four sisters, Mrs. Chas. Campbell and Mrs. Walter Stephens of Washburn, and Mrs. Chas Traylor of Richmond, and Mr. B. B. Heffley of Washburn Prairie. "This excellent character was one of this county's best citizens: A true companion, kind and loving mother and sister and was deeply loved by her many friends and neighbors. Vain is any attempt to measure the loss of such a mother to her children: after all poets have sung and lovers dreamed, outside of heaven there is no love like mother-love. We believe the tender care devoted to those nearest and dearest, went with her to the better land in the possibilities of eternity, may be needed hereafter. We fancy her awaiting them in the place prepared for her, a little apart from the innumerable company in bright array; perhaps in one of the 'places of ivory. It's windows crystal clear.' In the light, not of the sun, neither of the moon, we see her beyond the fields of fadeless asphodel, under the waving palms beside the still waters bordered with silver lilies. Those may be merely figures but they bear a precious meaning to yearning hearts made for the deep household loves; hearts that will not be comforted because the Angel of the House is missing. "Impressive funeral services were conducted at the Washburn Prairie church, Sunday afternoon by Rev. R. M. Patrick of Cassville. The funeral was one of the largest held there for some time, despite the inclement weather. A quartette composed of Mrs. John Ray, Mrs. Buford Wilks, and Chas. Wilks and Owen Frost furnished the music at the services. By request of the family, Mrs. Ray sang a solo, 'That Wonderful Mother of Mine,' accompanied on the violin by Mrs. Loren Hodge and Dave Stump, with Mrs. Maud Wilson at the piano for accompaniment. Many floral emblems were received as an expression of the high esteem in which this excellent character was held. Research Note: Eugene J. "Gene" Appelhans, age 74, of Cassville, died January 31 at his home following a brief illness. He was born October 18, 1930, in St. Peter, Kansas, and was a son of Andrew and Katharina (Gerstner) Appelhans. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He worked three years at Coleman Company in Wichita, Kansas, and was a trucker for over 30 years. He retired in 1990 and moved to Cassville. He was a member of American Legion Post 118 in Cassville. He married Betty Houston on November 28, 1953, in Wichita, Kansas, and she preceded him in death September 16, 1992. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Richard, Elmer, Edmund, and Julius. Research Note: He was the son of Franklin Pierce "Frank" and Mary Lou (Nelson) Armstrong. Both parents preceded him in death in 2004. His early childhood was spent riding bicycles and playing baseball. About fifty percent of his time was spent across the road at the Porter residence where there were always plenty of kids to play with. Ed spent most of his life in and around the Washburn area, graduating from Southwest High School in 1977. After graduation he worked several jobs including milking dairy cows, harvesting hay, building poultry houses and painting. After moving to Texas, he worked at an oil refinery as a welder's helper. His favorite line of work was carpentry but due to accidents which left his hands crippled he could no longer pursue this occupation. In 2009 he entered Freedom Dream Center in Aurora, Missouri where he accepted Jesus as his Savior and was a strong believer. He was president of the Southwest Board of Education from 1962 to 1966 and became a member of the Barry Electric Cooperative in 1968. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Washburn. He married Mary Lou Nelson. In 1984 he married June Charles, and she preceded him in death. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Stone and Eleanor Swindle.
