At the age of three, she and her family moved from Seattle, Washington, to Cassville, Missouri, to make their home. Vivian grew up in Barry County and was a graduate of Exeter High School. She continued her education at Grayson County College in Sherman, Texas, and graduated with a Degree in Nursing. She was a loving wife and mother, as well as, a registered nurse and charge nurse for the nursery of Wilson N. Jones Hospital in Sherman. At an early age she moved to the Gunter-Butterfield Community where she grew up and attended the Gunter and Butterfield Schools. In the later part of 1942, she moved to Cassville to make her home where she was later united in marriage to Doyle Gautney. To this union four children were born. On May 5th 1952 she went to work for Goodnow Textile Company in Monett as a sewing machine operator. When they later sold to Jr. Kid Togs she was selected by the owner of the company as production manager and floor lady where she remained until their closing in November of 1975. On December 1, 1975 she opened what was known as Doris's Greenhouse and remained in her own business until December 1, 1990 when she closed her greenhouse to enjoy her family, yard, Gardening, and flowers. Goutney, passed away at her home NE of Cassville a short distance, Saturday, Dec. 21. Mrs. Goutney died only about two months ago. She had failed in health rapidly since his passing. Mrs. Goutney was born Dec. 16, 1860, making her just past her 75th birthday. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 24, at Sparks and interment made in the cemetery there under direction of the Horine-Culver funeral service. Rev. J. T. Brattin conducted the funeral service. Surviving her are eleven children. Rosalie was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Loy Byrd, Bill Goutney and Oliver Mead; two daughters and two granddaughters. Rosalie attended school at Sparks in Purdy, Missouri, Clark in Wheaton, Missouri and finished her education at Wheaton High School. She was employed by Jumping Jack shoe factory for seventeen and a half years and Justin Boot for six and a half years as a seamstress before retiring. She was involved in 4H for many years as a leader, teaching all aspects of life to children. After Oliver and Rosalie were married they were able to enjoy traveling, to which she has many great memories. They were members of the VFW and volunteered at the Salvation Army Camp one summer teaching children to fish. Giving back when she could was very important to her. Rosalie lived most of her life in Barry County Missouri. She has always been involved in Church. She and Oliver attended and were members of Freewill Baptist Church in Purdy for almost fifteen years and at the time of passing she was a member of Gunter Methodist Church. At the age of two Burly and his parents moved to Geary, Oklahoma where his dad was a sharecropper. Alongside his dad and brother Robert they harvested cotton from the fields. Receiving his education from Greenfield school district in Oklahoma. Burly earned quite the name for himself as a 5'10", 225 pound seventeen-year-old fullback and middle linebacker. So much so he earned a full ride scholarship to Oklahoma A and M which is now OSU. Unfortunately, he received a serious neck injury that ended his football career. After graduating high school, he moved to Wichita, Kansas and became the district manager for C.I.T. financial loan company. While in a restaurant, as she waited tables, he met Freda Ellen Greek. After a period of dating, they were united in marriage on December 15,1960 in Miami, Oklahoma. On October 10, 1964 together they bought 130 acres in Barry County Missouri. After a few years of working day in and day out they had a productive dairy farm. After 35 years of milking, calving, slopping pigs, gathering eggs, mending fences, tending the garden, and let's not forget hauling hay in the extreme heat Burly semi-retired and went to work for the Shell Knob school district as a bus driver. After full retirement he stayed on the farm until a few years after Freda passed in 2008. While at a function at the senior center he met Wanda Jean (Williams). She departed this life at 1' o'clock a. m. March 31, 1942 at the age of 29 years, 6 months and 7 days. She was first married to Verl Hart on May 16, 1933. He preceded her in death o July 27, 1937. Surviving of her immediate family are one son, Maurice Glenden and one daughter, Catherine Ruth; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Pilant; four brothers; Fred and Aubrey of Cassville; Arthur of Alexandria, La.; and Lewis of Monett; four sisters; Myrl Coatney of Pioneer; Mildred Keeling of Cassville; Marjorie and Dorothy of the home address. She was converted at Merle's Chapel in 1939 and had lived a consecrated Christian life. She was patient through all her suffering and expressed her readiness to go. The funeral was held Friday afternoon and interment made in the Sparks cemetery. Mrs. Haskins leaves an aged husband, Burton Sampson Haskins, and several children, among them are Will, Blon and Pat Brown, children by a second marriage. Mr. Haskins is now about 92 years old. Mrs. Haskins maiden name was Dyer. The family being one of the pioneer families of Barry county. She was a sister of Calvin Dyer of McDowell and an aunt of W. W. Dyer of that locality. She was thrice married. Her first husband was William Jackson. Following his death she was married to Abe Brown (James Abraham Brown). The people of the community where she has lived for more than a half century held her in the highest regard as a good mother and as a kind and appreciated neighbor and friend. Hemphill, with other WPA laborers, had just finished loading a truck with heavy rocks. As he jumped on the running board, his foot slipped and he fell under the truck, the wheels passing lengthways over his body. However, we fancy that not a great many local people were aware of the fact that the youngest of the three victims, eighteen year old Mrs. Dwight Haley, was the daughter of a former Kenoma woman. The eighteen year old girl was the former Janice Sue Hoenshell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Wesley Hoenshell of Mt. Vernon. Her mother was the former Marie Morris. Her parents resided in the Kenoma neighborhood until 1941, when they moved to California. Burton and Elizabeth Jane Cates. - Why George Houston Burton split from the family and moved to Missouri and changed name to Houston. by Marilyn Dover Tolbert: February 6,1951, Memphis, Tennessee - This is a letter written to Fern Houston, in regard to the reason George Burton changed his name to Houston. Dear Fern: This was given to me by Martha Champion, a half sister of George, Robert and Margaret. David Burton, not a native of Mississippi came to Brownsville, Hinds county, Mississippi in 1840 and married Eliza Cates in 1842. Born to this union were George, Robert and Margaret. Mr. Burton died in 1848. In 1850 Eliza Cates Burton married Green Smith formerly of Nashville, Tenn. Born to this union were Emma, Martha, Jennie and Harry. Smith died during the Civil War in 1863, her two sons George 17 years old and Robert 14 joined the confederate army. Both went all the way through the war, they were captured by the Union Army but escaped and joined their units. In 1863 Margaret Burton married a soldier named Robert Catlett who was stationed near Brownsville, Miss. Their plantation is still owned by their children. At the close of the war Robert Burton went to the Indian Territory and stayed there as long as he lived, married an Indian girl.(Eliza Victoria Smith). George went to the Catlett farm and lived with his sister. Mr Catlett like so many others killed a Negro and stole his mule, the law was about to catch up with him, so having a wife and children they decided it was better for George to take the blame and run away letting it look like he was the guilty one. He went to Tennessee and married Roda Ann Curtis of Bowling, Curtis County. He went to Missouri and changed his name to Houston, after the war there was so many things done, so much sorrow and suffering, so many blacks killed, they never even tried to find the murderers. George went to a farm near Cassville, Missouri. He became a Christian Minister, serving the people of Southwest Missouri. (George Burton is John Howard Houston's grandfather), who is father of John Allen "G" Thurman Houston. (Gary Houston's Great grandfather) Jim Jefferson and wife, Pat and Mat Brown who George Burton Houston joined in marriage and many of his old friends told me upon one of my visits there, that he was a Christian Preacher and Mason, and as fine a man and neighbor as any could wish for. Research Note: Reverend Ronnie Paul Howerton, 75, of Monett, MO, won his race here on Earth and was called to his Heavenly home on Friday morning, January 20, 2023 following a battle with cancer. He was son of the late Edward Paul Howerton and Mary Ann (Fisher) Howerton. He graduated from Monett High School with the class of 1965 and then furthered his education at the Rolla School of Engineering. In 1968, Ronnie enlisted in the Army National Guard where he served for over eight years. He worked as a Lineman most of his adult life, first at Ozark Electric for nine years and last for the City of Monett, retiring in 2013. Ronnie's calling in life was that of a Pastor. He began his Ministry at Maria-TA-Heights Fundamental Methodist Church in Springfield, MO, followed by Easyville Fundamental Methodist Church and Aurora Fundamental Methodist Church. For the next twenty years, Ronnie was called back to Easyville Fundamental Methodist Church before his final calling for fourteen years at Grace Independent Methodist Church in Monett, formerly Monett Fundamental Methodist Church. Ronnie was also instrumental in the founding of the Berean Christian Academy in Monett. On November 24, 1967, in Monett, Ronnie Howerton and Deloris Pryor were united in marriage. He was raised by his paternal grandparents. He was very fond of his grandparents. He lived with them until he was old enough to be drafted into the service of his country. The Civil War ended before he had to go. He married Cynthia Ann Richardson 25 Dec 1870. They had 5 children: Myra Bell, Fanny Lucinda, Samuel, Addison and Spot in KY. They moved to MO by covered wagon, settling near Cross Hollows. Three more boys were born after they moved into MO, George, John Franklin, and Robert 'Bob' Lincoln. When in KY Jerome lived in a neighborhood of primitive Baptist people. He always loved to hear them sing. Some primitive Baptist people lived in MO where we lived. They held services in the school house near us where I went to school. He took his lantern at night and walked over to listen to them sing. Grandpa lived with us a long time. Grandmother had passed away several years back. Grandpa always planted watermelons and cantaloupe. He hoed my mother's garden, Aunt Lottie's and Uncle Bob's too. He was a hard working man. Grandpa traded a mule to a man for a homestead of 160 acres. I guess mules, horses were very valuable and scarce at that time. My grandfather said he split enough rails to fence the 160 acres that year. (Can you imagine what a backache he probably had?) The Pattons were neighbors to the south. Grandpa always had a big garden, with rhubarb, pumpkins and everything else. He also kept bees. Cause of death was gunshot in the head, homicide. - Preliminary Hearing Set For February 17, 1971 - Arraigned On Two First Degree Murder Charges - Steven Lee Williams, 18, held without bond in connection with shooting death Of his Grandparents, Mr. And Mrs. Samuel Johnson, North Of Pierce City Saturday night: An 18-year-old soldier stationed at Fort Leonard Wood was arraigned in Lawrence County Magistrate Court this Morning on two charges of first degree murder in connection with the slaying of his grandparents at their farm home five miles north of Pierce City on Highway 97. - Steven Lee Williams, who was home on weekend pass when the slaying occurred, is being held without bond with a preliminary hearing set for 10 am Wednesday, February 17. The youth was arrested by Joplin police officers at 8:45 p.m. Saturday in Joplin, little more than an hour after his grandparents, Samuel Johnson 58, and Mrs. Lena Johnson 57, were found shot to death. Sheriff Marvin Quade said the shooting apparently followed an argument over an accident the youth had in a car owned by one of the Johnson's' sons in Newton County. The sheriff said the bodies were found by one of the sons, Harley Johnson. Death was placed at about 7:30 p.m. Both had been shot once by a .22 caliber rifle. Mr. Johnson over the left ear and Mrs. Johnson in the left temple. Williams was arrested at 7th and Oak Ave. in Joplin by patrolman Ernie Denman in a pickup truck owned by Mr. Johnson, investigating officers reported two rifles were found in the front seat of the truck but Williams offered no resistance. It list his year of birth as 1891 and the stone has 1890. It reads that it was a railroad accident that caused his death. His skull was fractured. His father is given as John Calvin King, born VA, and his mother as Myra Johnson, born in KY. He was a blacksmith. J. C. King, Purdy, MO, was the informant. - July 11, 1912, Thursday, Cassville Republican - A deaf mute, son of John King, living on Flat Creek was killed Saturday of last week by a train at Columbia, where he was attending school. The remains were sent to his parents and burial was made in the Sparks Cemetery, July 1. - Cassville Republican, July 11, 1912 - Roma was 21 years, 6 months, and 4 days old at the time of his death. He was a deaf mute and was loved by all who knew him. He was working in the Hamilton Brown Shoe factory at Columbia. He was to be married July 4th to a deaf girl, Miss Cecilia Staats at Columbia. Miss Staats and Miss Ora Edwards and Roma's father accompanied his body home. His friends at Columbia sent many beautiful flowers. He was at home visiting just one week before this sad accident occurred. Mr. King's sisters, Mrs. Hattie Bell of Carthage and Mrs. King's two brothers, Spot and George Johnson, of Jasper City, were present at the funeral. Rev. G. G. Cottrell conducted the funeral services. Roma was a devoted son and brother. Koch. - November 4, 1915, Thursday,Cassville Republican - The death angel has visited our home and taken away our beloved husband and father. Herman Koch was born in Germany, Jan 28, 1846, and departed this life, Oct 13, 1915, age 69 years, 8 months and 15 days. He came to this country with is parents at the age of two years and settled near St. Louis, Mo. From there he moved with is parents to Illinois and then to Wisconsin where he grew to manhood and lived several years and married Miss Minnie Miller. From there they moved to Kansas where he lived about 19 years. Fourteen years ago they moved to Missouri where he has lived until his death. He married in the year of 1874. To this union were born eight children, seven girls and one boy. One girl proceed him to the better world in infancy. He was converted about 21 years ago. He will be missed by his many friends and relatives. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. R. J.
