Patterson. - June 22, 1916, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Seligman News: Lizzie and Margaret Patterson of Kansas City are visiting their grandfather, C. A. Patterson. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, Nov. 14, 1918 - Charles Alexander Patterson was born at Columbus, Ohio, March 16th, 1838, and died Nov. 1st, 1918, age 80 years, 7 months and fifteen days. He enlisted Sept. 3rd, 1861, in Co. G. 18th Regiment, United States Infantry, and was honorably discharged on Sept. 19th, 1864. He was a First Sergeant in his company. On Oct. 7th, 1872, he was married to Miss Mary M. Cooper in Trimble County, Kentucky. He leaves a widow, one son, L. A. Patterson of Kansas City and three grandchildren, two sons having gone before. He has been a highly respected resident of Seligman for many years. C. A. Patterson was a man held in the highest esteem by all who knew him and he was known by a large number of people in this county who will be grieve to learn of his death. - Charles A. Graveside services and burial were Tuesday, Aug. 5, at Seligman Cemetery, with the Rev. Bob Scott officiating. Erma Jean met Walter Fred Preston in 1932 on their first day at school in Seligman and they were married on January 5, 1945. Research Note: He was a son of William Walter and Helen Eva (Montgomery) Preston. Fred met his future wife, Erma Jean Mitchell, on their first day at school in Seligman. He attended Seligman High School and then enlisted in the United States Army serving in World War II in Korea. He contracted malaria while in Korea and spent six months on the USS Comfort recuperating. Walter and Erma Jean Mitchell were married on January 5, 1945 at the First Baptist Church in Rogers, Arkansas; they celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary prior to her death on August 29, 2009. He married Cleva (Greek) Poe on May 12, 2010. Mary Lou graduated from Seligman High School in 1950. She and Benny were married Oct. 17th, 1953 moving to the Air Force Base in Ardmore, OK. When Benny's service ended, they moved to Springfield, MO where Benny attended Missouri State University, in Springfield, MO. On Dec. 20th, 1955, their son was born in Cassville, MO. In 1957 the family moved to New Haven, MO where Benny began teaching and later became the superintendent of schools. After thirty years in the school system, the two enjoyed having a "winter home" in Donna, Texas. She played the keyboard for the local Baptist Church and Benny delivered the sermons for a couple years. By 1993 the couple moved their primary home to Bentonville, AR. They continued to be active members of the First Baptist Church. On Nov. 25th, 2005, Mary Lou's husband passed away. In 2008 she moved to Shell Knob to be by her son. She had begun suffering with Alzheimer's disease. In 2017 a fall in her home landed her in the hospital with a broken pelvis. Ramey gave the information. - Cassville Republican, Nov. 19, 1914 - Fred Ramey, a highly respected young man of near Seligman, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1914, of typhoid fever, following 21 days sickness. The deceased was born in Milan, Sumner Co., Kansas, March 23, 1890. Some years ago he came to this county with his parents who settled on Butler east of Seligman. He was married to Grace Collier, daughter of Thomas Collier of near Seligman, on Nov 14, 1913. Besides a young widow he leaves an infant daughter, father, mother, one sister and a brother and other immediate relatives to mourn his death. He was devoted to his home and enjoyed the confidence and esteem of his acquaintance. The funeral services were held at Seligman Wednesday of last week in charge of Rev. J. T. Brattin. Pole/Poe at Seligman and burial was made at that place. Three children were present. A. E. Pratt of Arkansas, Mrs. Apple of Seligman and Sybil Pratt of Monett. She was a good Christian woman and will be greatly missed. - According to her daughter, Sybil's death certificate, Mrs. Reed was Sarah Ellis before she married Louis Pratt. The Barry County death reports that were taken in the 1880's record a Louis Pratt who died on April 6, 1884. He was buried in Pea Ridge, Benton Co., AR, and had lived in Washburn, MO, for 10 years. He was age 35 years, 3 months old and was a merchant. Dr. H. C. Brookshire, Washburn, MO, was the physician. His cause of death was brain congestion, neuralgia and he was married. His father was given as Frank and his mother as Ollie Roller and Ollie was given as his wife's name. This record is in error - and his name and his wife's name was placed in the line for his mother's name. He was a son of Francis M. and Mary (Roller) Skelton. - Seligman Man Killed By Frisco Train No. 4 - SON OF PROMINENT SELIGMAN CITIZEN WAS BORN AND RAISED AT SELIGMAN, WAS A GOOD CITIZEN, FUNERAL WEDNESDAY - Henry Skelton a prominent citizen of Seligman 13 miles south of Cassville, met an untimely death at that place last Tuesday morning when the wagon in which he was riding was struck by Frisco passenger train No. 4. Mr. Skelton operated a dray line in Seligman and on this fatal day he was returning from the school building at that place where he had been to deliver some supplies and as he started to cross the railroad track he drove directly in front of the train which was coming down grade at the time he was struck. It is not known whether Mr. Skelton was struck and killed by the train or was crushed by the wagon in which he was riding. Mr. Skelton was born and raised in the vicinity of Seligman, was about 39 years old and was a member of an old time and highly respected family. He was a son of Frank Skelton and was a good citizen. He was also a brother of Ran Skelton of that place a prominent citizen. Funeral services were held at his family home in Seligman, Wednesday afternoon after which the remains were interred in the cemetery at that place. John Samuel Arnold's estate was settled in 1852 in Barry County, naming his children. - Cassville Democrat, July 12, 1929 - SELIGMAN WOMAN DIES SUDDENLY, OLD TIME AND HIGHLY RESPECTED CITIZEN DROPS DEAD AT SENECA WHILE ON VISIT - Mrs. Caroline Snodgrass an old time and highly respected citizen residing at Seligman, dropped dead Tuesday morning after arising from the breakfast table in Seneca, Mo., where she had gone on a visit with relatives. Mrs. Snodgrass, who is about 85 years old, had accompanied her relative, Orzo Arnold of Seneca to his home for a visit with his family. She apparently was in good health as her death was unexpected. She had not complained of any ailments previous to her untimely passing. Mrs. Snodgrass had lived in the Seligman community many years and was on of the oldest citizens of that section of the county. She leaves several children to mourn her passing. She was an excellent woman and was greatly loved by all her acquaintances. Mrs. Summey had made her home here with her daughters, until about a year ago. She was well known here and in Commerce, where she lived Several years ago. Survivors include three other daughters, Mrs. Lizzie Snyder of Pittsburg, Kas., Mrs. Lucy Bell of Kansas City and Mrs. Florida Sheridan of Commerce; three sons, James Summey of Tulsa, Grover Summey of Frontenac, Kas., and John T. Summey of Washburn, Mo.; six grandchildren and two great grand-children. The body will lie in state at the Lane Funeral home here until 10 o'clock Friday morning. Then it will be removed to Seligman, Mo., for funeral rites. Funeral services will be held at the Christian church in Seligman, with the Rev. Montie Taylor officiating. C. C. Summey was born May 4th 1850, and died April 18th 1923, aged 73 years. On May 11, 1871, he and Miss Eliza Pendergraft were married and six daughters and three sons were born to this union. All were present at the funeral except Mrs. Lucy Arnhart of Joplin. Mr. Summey was born in Boone County, Mo., May 4, 1850, and has lived in the vicinity of Seligman since a small boy. Research Note: He was the son of James Soloman "Jimmy Dry" Walden and Laura Belle (Young) Walden, the tenth of eleven children. He attended school in Seligman. Johnsie served in the U.S. Army with the 101st Airborne from 1948-1954, spending time in Korea. As a young man Johnsie would travel west to work wheat harvests in Oregon and Washington. In the early 60's he moved to Walla Walla, WA to work on a wheat ranch. In the following years he lived in Athena, OR and Hermiston, OR where he drove a truck, both local and long haul, which took him all over the U.S. He returned back to the Ozarks in the 1980's and drove for Leon Cawood Trucking and then for Bentonville Towing working there until his retirement at age 75. In 2012 he moved to Cassville where he would live until his death. Johnsie was a dog lover and an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He enjoyed going to The Sunrise Cafe for coffee and conversation. He loved dancing and music and was a regular at the Seligman dances and the McDowell Jamborees while health permitted. Anyone that knew Johnsie knew what a character he was. His outrageous sense of humor and knack for telling tall tales kept everyone guessing and laughing. Johnsie was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Elvis Walden, Abe Walden, Albert (Cotton) Walden, JS (Hoppy) Walden and Frank Walden and four sisters, Opal Burton, Mary (Pat) Phillips, Thelma Amos and Norma Lee (Susie) Fogg. He entered the service in March 1942, and he fought during World War II from 1943 to 1945 in Europe. Hoppy was also a prisoner of war sometime during the conflict. His family buried him in Seligman on Sept. 13, after nearly 16 years of trying to get his body transported from Morris, Ala. Contributed Photo Family buries 'Hoppy' in Seligman In September, a World War II veteran was buried in Seligman, nearly 16 years after his family discovered he was buried as an indigent in an Alabama cemetery. Vicki (Fogg) Rencken, 60, who moved from Cassville to Oregon in 1974, wanted to know where her uncle, James "Hoppy" Walden, had died. "You would think that a dead man would not be hard to find," said Rencken, who started researching after she retired as an elementary school librarian. "They don't move around. I've always been told that his body was in Alabama. I started searching there." After months of dead ends, she could not find out anything. Rencken started calling county coroners until she contacted Bill Harris, coroner in Lee County, Ala., on Jan. 27. "He said, 'Let me look into it,' and within minutes, he called me back, and he was able to tell me that my uncle had been buried in Morris, Ala., just outside of Birmingham," she said. Walden had a massive heart attack and died on Oct. 20, 1998, and was buried as an indigent. He was 78. Rencken made dozens of phone calls and talked to numerous people, including cemetery supervisors, court officers, vital records clerks and county officials, in an effort to bring her uncle's remains home. Walden grew up near Seligman and northwest Arkansas. Rencken, who lives in Hermiston, Ore., said she decided to call Cassville, the city in which she was raised, for help because she figured there was someone there she could trust. In June, Rencken contacted Jim Fohn, Barry County coroner. Fohn required permission from the next of kin before exhuming Walden's body. Rencken found Walden's daughters, Lisa and Addie "Janay" who lived in Siloam Springs, Ark., and Rogers, Ark, respectively. They were willing to help, so they signed the papers, giving Fohn permission to exhume their dad's body. Fohn contacted and sent paperwork on Walden to the coroner in Jefferson County, Ala. A funeral home in Gardendale, Ala., had Walden's body disinterred and cremated. The funeral home mailed the ashes to Fohn. The whole process took about 60 days. Walden's ashes were then turned over to the family, who buried them in a private service at Seligman Cemetery on Sept. 13. "The family couldn't get anywhere because they didn't know the places to call," he said. "Where they called, they ran into a wall." Rencken said she was impressed with what Fohn has done for her family. The son of James "Jimmy Dry" Solomon and Laura Belle (Young) Walden, Walden was born March 5, 1920. He had 10 siblings. His only living siblings are an 84-year-old brother, Everett "Johnsie" Walden, of Cassville, and an 89-year-old sister, Betty Jo (Walden) Wade, of Oregon City, Ore. Walden entered the U.S. Army on March 18, 1942. Wade told Rencken that Walden drove a tank in the 5th Armored Division, and his unit was captured in the Black Forest of Germany. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 14, 1945. Her dad did not talk about his time as a POW in World War II, Janay said. "I was told he lived, like, in a foxhole," she said. "He was all crumpled up and curled up. And of course, it crippled him." Her dad had breathing issues, heart problems and rheumatoid arthritis that caused him a lot of pain. Janay said she thought he also had scoliosis. "He just constantly leaned forward," she said. "I've never known my dad to stand up straight. My whole life, he was horribly, horribly crippled." He did not have a temper, Janay said. "He was a very sweet man," she said. "He was a really good dad." Walden drove a truck for many years in Springdale, Ark., after he got out of the U.S. Army, Johnsie said. When he had his heart attack, Janay was at work. Somebody called her mom, Mary Lou Grace, and told her he had a heart attack. "We didn't know that he died at that point," Janay said. "They had said that the paramedics thought they had got enough of a heartbeat to maybe save him." The Alabama physician gave her a different prognosis over the phone. Walden died when he keeled over, Janay said. "The thing is, he had always said, 'You girls will not have to worry about me. The VA will take care of me when my time comes,'" she said. She called the Veterans Affair office in Fayetteville, Ark., talked to a woman about one or two days after Walden died. Janay said she did know her name. "She asked me if he had died in a VA hospital," Janay said. "And I said, 'Well, no. They had to get him to the closest medical facility.' And she said, 'If he didn't die in a VA hospital, he ceases to be any of our responsibility.' And, hung up on me." Janay was still mourning for her 12-year-old daughter, Jaclyn Boling, who died Jan. 23, 1998, after being hit by a car. "I hadn't even began to handle my daughter's death," Janay said. "I just didn't even know where to go with my dad. I just talked to the physician in Alabama. "I was in shock for losing my daughter. There are things that I do not remember." Her husband, Thomas, tried to ask for help from his and Janay's state senator, who could not do anything because the location of Walden's burial was unknown at the time. "It was frustrating," Janay said. She did not know he was buried in Morris, until her cousin, Rencken, called this year. "They put his body in a bag and just buried him in a pauper's grave," said Janay, whose mom died in 2005. After Walden died, the authorities also contacted two sisters in Springfield and a brother in Wichita, Kan., Rencken said. Her mother was Walden's sister, Norma Lee "Susie" (Walden) Fogg. She died of cancer in 1983 at the age of 55. On Sept. 13, Janay; Lisa; Janay's son; Johnsie; Rencken's brother; and Walden's nephew, attended the funeral in Seligman. Walden was buried next to his parents and his sister, Opal (Walden) Burton. "It just kind of broke my heart because it was a long time in coming," Janay said. "It shouldn't have ever been this long. He deserved better than that. I can't hardly even describe what it was like to lay him near his mom and dad." Janay has a sister, Patricia Walden, who is also buried in Seligman Cemetery, she said. Patricia was about 3 months old when she died. She would have been the oldest. Walden was just a nice guy, and he was a friend to everybody, said Johnsie, who was born in Gateway, Ark., and fought in the Korean War as an Army paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division. Johnsie lived in Oregon from 1954 to 1988. After he retired from the Mobile Oil Co., he settled in northwest Arkansas. Walden visited Johnsie before going on the trip to Alabama to visit friends. He was united in marriage May 3, 1908 to Laura Bell Young. To this union were born 11 children. One daughter, Opal, precede him in death. Surviving besides his wife, are four daughters, Mary Phillips, Thelma Amos, Betty Cope and Norma Lee Kaiden, all of Springfield: six sons Elvis, Fresno Calif.; Abe and Albert, Washburn; Everett, Cassville; . J. S and Franklin D. of the home; also 11 grandchildren, his mother, Mrs. Sally Walden, Emporia, Kans.; four sisters, Mrs. Martha Knowles, Berryville, Ark.; Mrs. Ethel Woods and Mrs. Alvah Elliott, Wichita, Kans.; three brothers, Wayne, Watts, Okla.; Joe and Albert, Seligman. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Tim Larkin at 2:00 P.M. Sunday in the Seligman Baptist Church of which he was member. Music was furnished by the quartet composed of Mrs. Lowery, Mrs. Larkin, and J. M. Alexander, accompanied by Mrs. Haneke. Research Note: She was known as the "Mountain Maid" and lived in the Roaring River area in a log cabin. Death certificate says she was born on the Pier at NY Harbor. Parents not named. O. B. Conner of Seligman, MO was the informant. She burned to death in her cabin. - One of the most enchanting realities in this area would be the life story of the "Mountain Maid." This mystery maiden, whose name was Jean Wallace, lived alone for 48 years, high atop a mountain overlooking this beautiful valley. This light haired bright blue-eyed girl was born on a New York City pier at the foot of Canal Street on May 17, 1851. Even during her childhood years, her parents knew she was a peculiar girl. Jean discovered at the age of seven that she had the same "sixth sense" that her great-grandfather had. They called this mysterious power, clairvoyance. Jean's great-grandfather also had bright blue eyes and light hair; they were the only two in the family. When Jean became a young woman, she found that she would never be able to marry. She had said on one occasion, "What husband would want a wife who knows his every secret and thoughts?" For a short time, Jean was a nurse for a New York hospital. This job ended soon after because she couldn't stand the strain of knowing what was going to happen to her patients. Finally in 1892, Jean came to Roaring River near Cassville, Missouri, and homesteaded a 160-acre tract of land. Soon after her arrival, curious people came to her home. After having heard of her "sixth sense," some would ask to have their fortunes told. Over time, many thousands came to seek help with lost items or strayed animals. She could see into anyone's past or their future, as told by the old-timers, usually instantaneously and without effort. Whatever prompted this energetic capable woman to retire from society and live in seclusion for the rest of her life will probably always be a mystery, as she remained almost completely reticent about her own life except for frequent mention of her experiences as a nurse. The men at the Roaring River CCC Camp were about her only friends except for her constant companions - black cats. Miss Wallace's cabin was built mostly by donated labor. She walked 3 1/2 miles to get her mail and 5 1/2 miles to Eagle Rock for many of her supplies, carrying her groceries in a 25 lb. flour sack. Her needs were small for she had a small peach orchard, raised chickens from which she had eggs, and pigs which she butchered for meat. Her longest period ever being away from her Roaring River home was when World War I broke out. Going to Long Island, New York, she served as a nurse at Camp Upton, acting as "Mother" for a soldier's cottage. Following this five-year span, she returned after the signing of the Armistice, to the little log cabin in the Ozarks. It was a favorite outing for the young folks to "go see Miss Wallace." They went on horseback, rode in buggies, or walked up the winding trail to her home. Often, the girls in the group would take food for a picnic under the trees. Often, also, the baskets contained food which was not meant for their own use. The girls would pretend they had it left over and would give it to Miss Wallace, because she would not accept anything that hinted of charity. The young men in the group would usually take turns at cutting firewood which Miss Wallace used in her small King heater when winter came. Mrs. Grant Aldridge, who was the daughter of Westley Reed whose family lived near Miss Wallace's cabin, recalls spending a night with the Mountain Maid when she was only a girl. Mrs. Aldridge asked to have her fortune told. She was told that Grand Aldridge was working "out west" and that they would be married in the future. As she had not heard from the young man who was supposed to be her future husband for some time, she expressed her concern. Miss Wallace said that she would hear from him in a few days and that she mustn't be worried as it was not possible for him to post a letter but every thirty days. Also she indicated that she saw white things moving about him slowly, and something lying across his lap, none of which made much sense. But it was learned sometime later that Mr. Aldridge was herding sheep in the western mountains and was only able to get to the post office once a month. The slow moving white objects were of course the sheep and he said he always kept a gun lying across his lab to protect his woolly charges. This fortune was told in the fall before the Aldriges were married in February. Troy Cornell, the rural mail carrier out of Seligman, delivered Miss Wallace's mail. He told of being surprised one morning to find her waiting at the box for him. She said she was awakened at 4:00 that morning and "knew" that Mr. Reed had died at that time. Mr. Cornell said he hadn't heard anything about it and felt that it probably wasn't true. But later in the morning he found that Mr. Reed had indeed died that morning at 4:00. The stories are legion. Hundreds can relate similar memories. Miss Wallace had found a firm place in the hearts of her neighbors and friends; not one of those who remembered her spoke unadmiringly. For a time a CCC Camp was located in the park and all the boys heard of the "old maid of the mountains," whom some called irreverently the "old witch," some believing, some not. One boy, in despair at not finding a lost wallet containing papers which he hoped would get him a good job, went to the aged woman as a last resort. Miss Wallace was not overly cordial at first because she knew he had been a "Doubting Thomas." She relented however, assuring her young caller that the wallet was in plain view on the trail where it had been lost. "But I have gone over the trail three times and it is not in plain sight," he protested, somewhat disconcerted. "That's what you think," she replied. "You should have covered the trail the way you went the first time but you back-tracked. Still you were all right until you came to that high ledge at the creek. From there you could see the spring and a short cut but that was not the way you went the first time." The boy could not recall any change in route, so she jogged his memory. "Don't you remember a fallen tree, with branches you had to squeeze through? Well, it is still there and that is where you will find your wallet You also will get your job," she promised him, and he did. James Woods, an MFA insurance agent in Cassville, was in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Roaring River in 1939 and made several visits to the home of the Mountain Maid. A visit to the mysterious woman was on the "must" list for every boy at the CCC camp, Woods recalls, and her renown spread as they came and went from the camp. The boys more or less adopted the strange old woman, taking food and supplies when they went for counsel, and in general, seeing that she had what she needed. He says he is sure the boys would have fought for Miss Wallace, and probably she for them, so mutual was the affection. Several people in telling of visits to the Mountain Maid, remembered that she didn't waste time with unbelievers. Mr. Woods recalls a visit made by him and several friends to have their fortunes told. When he went in, she greeted him with, "You don't believe in me, do you?" He honestly replied that he had never believed in this kind of power or sense, and she stated emphatically that no information would he get. However, as he turned to leave she said, "But one thing I will tell you, you will have an automobile accident when you are fifty years old." He said that although he thought of this prediction many times through the years, he had never confided it to anyone. But the automobile accident, a bad one for Woods, did occur and another prediction came true. The tell of another CCC boy who had also lost something, but scoffingly replied to the suggestion that he ask her to help him. "That old fool can't tell me anything," but finally he was prevailed upon to go to her. He returned quickly, out of breath and so upset he had trouble speaking. "Oh, Gosh!" he gasped. "It was awful. I approached the hut, thinking up a nice speech to please the old girl, and a whole mob of cats came out of a hole near the front. I didn't get a chance to ask her anything. The minute I knocked on the door, she threw it open and snapped at me, 'This old fool can, but will not tell you anything.' Then she slammed the door in my face before I could say anything, all those cats jumped me, spitting, howling, and biting at my legs. Gee! I didn't know you could sic cats on a man like that, so I ran away as fast as I could!" The story spread until one of her neighbors asked Miss Wallace what had really happened. She said it was true, except that the part about the cats wasn't quite right. Startled at having his mind read and the door slammed, the youth had stepped back and trod a cat's tail. The cat had "sort of exploded" which made him jump and step on another. That was all. But she did have a lot of cats. Since Miss Wallace considered gambling an evil thing and her clairvoyant powers were to be used only for the best purposes, the following incident believed by all her neighbors, is especially interesting. A woman visiting the park heard of the celebrity on the mountain and, like many others, paid her a call. What she really wanted to know was which horse to bet on at the horse race the next day. Instead of putting the question frankly, the visitor asked which name of the various horses the old one thought prettiest. A strange smile appeared on Miss Wallace's aged face as she replied, "Butterfly, that's the prettiest. And butterfly is the fastest, too." "Did you know that the woman won $1250 on your tip?" asked an incredulous friend, when the story got around. "Yes," admitted the recluse, "and if you knew what the woman is going to use the money for, you would understand why I let her think she fooled me." Boy nature in the Ozarks is no different than elsewhere and though somewhat in terror of her witch-like powers, a pair of youngsters could not resist testing them with a little prank. Removing the saddle from their horses and hiding them some distance from the cabin, they rode up on their horses and asked Jean if she could tell them who had stolen their saddles. As it happened the joke was on the jokers. But they were good boys, sons of good friends of hers, so she shook her finger and snapped a sharp command, "Yes, you young rascals, you stole them yourselves. Get back as fast as you can to where you hid them because wild pigs are chewing them up." The boys obeyed, but already the pigs had done so much damage that they had to tell their fathers how it happened. Others who learned to their sorrow of her powers were hunters who invaded her 160 acres. She always knew they were coming and told them that nothing on her land was to be killed, not even a snake. She refused to have any timber cut from her land... her firewood had to be cut from trees already dead or dying. The "old maid of the mountains" described her faculty as a feeling just like memory, but it applied to anyone and ran into the future as well as the past. "It is like walking along a road," she explained. "You can see quite a distance behind you and quite a distance ahead, but far away thing begin to get dim, in either direction." She prophesied almost to a day, when Hitler would invade Poland. But, she also said that in the end, all the plots would come to naught and he would be assassinated. Many a person was so impressed with her prophetic ability as to ask why she did not go to Washington and guide the Government in avoiding blunders. "There are two reasons," she would reply. "In the first place nobody would listen to an old witch. But, if by any chance they did start to follow guidance, I am sure my powers would be taken from me because otherwise they would be almost certain to interfere with the course of destiny. It is all very well for me to tell people where to find lost pocketbooks and strayed cows, even to warn a businessman against a bad investment or tell a woman how to escape a love entanglement. Such little things in no way affect the great predestined tide of human events, but if the world knew the big events that are to come and tried to forestall disasters, such as the rise of Hitler and Stalin, it would confuse destiny, and that, of course, will never be permitted." Ed Banister, a rich lumber executive, who owned a cabin in Roaring River, was not backward in admitting that he got many a valuable business tips from the old lady. She always insisted that God or perhaps some inhibition blinded her prophetic eye when she sought to see her own coming events. For instance, is she asked herself when and where she was going to die or even where she would be the following noon, the picture in her mind was nothing but a think fog. Yet often she caught a glimpse of her own future by accident or indirection. Obligingly "gazing up the future" of some friend, she said she was frequently surprised to see the friend talking to her own self at some place she had not thought of visiting. Though for years her failing eyesight prevented her reading the books that filled her cabin shelves, apparently the sight of her "sixth sense" remained as sharp as ever. Although those who knew her in the earlier years remember her not only as intelligent and well-read, kind and physically strong, and thinking nothing of walking to visit friends five or ten miles away, they also remember her neatness and cleanliness. But time takes its toll; her health and her eyesight failed. Water had to be carried from a spring 200 yards down a steep path from her cabin. As she grew older, Miss Wallace became careless about her personal appearance. She had a multitude of cats which shared her home with her and they did not contribute to either the cleanliness or orderliness of the cabin. Hugh and Norma Brixey, during the 1930's when Mr. Brixey was superintendent of Roaring River State Park, frequently took groceries to her, making sure she had food and wood. Once, when Miss Wallace was quite ill, Mrs. Brixey went to the cabin, stripped her bed, and took the laundry back to the park where she washed it; the washing was long, long overdue to put it nicely. As her health failed, her cabin home was a scene of disorder, filth and squalor. Her only income in the years before her death had been her old-age pension. The tragic end was near. Two boys hunting in the woods on Monday morning in February in 1940, saw smoke in the direction of the cabin. On investigation, they found the cabin burned to the ground. The strange and kind little woman had perished in the flames at the age of 88 years. County Coroner Floyd Callaway and Sheriff Troy Wilson pieced together the story of what had happened. A kerosene can was found near the small stove and it was believed she had poured oil on live coals in trying to kindle a fire. A few fragments of bones found in the ashes established the presence of Miss Wallace in the cabin when it burned. In the Bank of Seligman was found her safe deposit box containing $226.00, money which was to be used, "to pay for a funeral in keeping with my means and position in life." Her homestead was bequeathed to "my true and long time friend, Rev. Samuel Kent of Clearwater, Florida." Reverend Kent was an Episcopalian minister; she had no known relatives. Funeral services were held in the Union Church of Seligman, with Reverend Charles Vanzandt officiating. Burial was in the Seligman Cemetery under the direction of the Horine-Culver Funeral Home of Cassville. Her obituary stated that she was a very zealous believer in the Bible and of the Episcopal faith. Ironically, during the last winter of her life, and during a time she was quite ill, Miss Wallace gave permission to F.O. (Pa) Fields of Fields Photo Shop in Cassville, to take her picture. They, better than any words, tell of Miss Wallace's state of health and living condition near the end of her life. No longer does a loving public follow the trail to her door, but in the Roaring River area, there will undoubtedly always be tales of Jean Wallace, the mysterious "Mountain Maid" of Roaring River. - Another Stone |

Research Note: Abner B. Webb, 68 years old, a retired farmer, school teacher, and Benton county, Arkansas tax collector, died Friday in the local hospital, following a brief illness. He had resided in Seligman the last seven years. A native of Benton county, he served as county tax collector from 1916 to 1920. He was a resident of the Pea Ridge community most of his life. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Vasta Hagood of Washburn, and Mrs. David Rurey of Portland, Ore.; two sons; two sisters, Mrs. Jim Mitchell and Mrs. Willie Gowan of Seligman; his father, Tom F. Research Note: Cassville, MO resident. She was the daughter of John and Vergie (Lockwood) Fahnestock. She was united in marriage to J. D. Webb in Joplin; he preceded her in death in 1991. After retiring from Safeway as a checker she and her family moved to Cassville in 1979 to make their home. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Johnny Webb and Tommy Webb, one daughter, Paula Felix, one brother, and four sisters. He was one of the directors of the Seligman Chamber of Commerce. You could generally find him at the local parts store (Seligman Auto Parts) were he was a permanent fixture. He was never married; however his life was very full being involved in the Masonic Lodge, the Elks Lodge and the Shiners' Organization. His passion in life was KART racing. He was the crew chief for his nephew Brian. Together they traveled everywhere winning numerous regional and national championships. They recently won a world championship at Daytona International Speedway this past December. He worked at RTW as a lead maintenance man for some 20 years. Survived by one son.
