She was born March 10, 1861. Surviving her are five daughters: Mrs. W. E. Roller of Monett, Mrs. Alta May Partridge of Mt. Vernon, Mrs. L. J. Stacy of Caldwell, New Jersey, Mrs. J. C. Barnett of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Mrs. F. H. Meyers of Monroe, La.; four sons: J. F. Elliott of Stamford, Tex., S. F. Elliott of Alturas, Calif., M. W. Elliott of Amarillo, Tex., and N. R. Elliott of Wichita, Kan. She also leaves twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. All of the children except one son, S. F. Fawver of Seligman was born Jan 26, 1857, in Hancock County, IL, and in 1866, his father moved to Barry County, MO, and located near Seligman, where Chris grew to manhood. He worked on the farm until 1879, when he entered the State University at Columbia, where he graduated in 1888, receiving the degree of S. B. and C. E. After graduating he returned to Seligman where he clerked in a store for five years and then engaged in business for himself. In 1879 he and Miss Clara B. Hemingway of Winnebago County, IL, were married by whom have been born one son and two daughters. In August, 1905, he was the im__ag spirit in the organization of the ___ Bank of Seligman, and was ___ cashier. He is a very successful business man and is so recognized by the business world. FAWVER PASSES FOLLOWING OPERATION LAST SUNDAY - Prominent Seligman Banker and Business Man Succumbs After Appendix Operation - As the years pass on and we see life on this earth develop and grow and mature, and then after a brief period fade away, we realize more and more that it is all in accord with the scheme of the great Creator. We bow our heads in grief as some friend passes into the life beyond, only to be borne up again in confidence and understanding as we realize it was not intended that any of us remain here forever, and that the passing of a friend must simply serve as marking the close of the task our Father intended for him to accomplish. So it is with the passing of our friend, Joseph C. Fawver. Although during his illness his friends and neighbors had become accustomed to his absence from his place of business as they passed or stopped in at various hours of the day, still it brings a heart-twinge to face the realization that never again they will see him sitting there by the door; that his cheery greeting will not again welcome them as they step inside. But, he has rounded out his three score years and ten, he had helped to create a home, a family, a business, a community. Interwoven into the various activities of the community had been his own influence and the influence of his accomplishments in the business life of Seligman there stand many monuments to the interest, activity and personal efforts of Joseph C. Fawver. Joseph C. Fawver was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian E. Fawver and was born in Hancock county, Illinois, near Carthage. He was 74 years old. In the year of 1886, in company with his esteemed parents and brothers, they moved to the old Fawver homestead near Seligman, where a brother, John, now lives. Associated with his honorable brother, C. C. Fawver, early in life they entered the business world at Seligman, owning the bank, hardware store, lumber yard and other vast holdings in that section, all of which institutions have been most successful. He was first married to Mollie Morgan over 50 years ago, to which union one son, Walter Fawver, was born. His good wife preceded him in death in the year 1900 and in the year 1901 he was again married to Miss Bertie Whitener. He is survived by his grief-stricken wife, one son, Walter, two brothers, C. C. Fawver and John M. Fawver, both prominent Seligman citizens and three sisters, Mrs. Mary McCollum of Seligman, Mrs. Amanda Morgan of Garfield, Ark. And Mrs. Lydia Collier of Marionville, and one granddaughter Miss Cuma Fawver. His death followed an operation for appendicitis and cancer which was performed several days previous to his passing. It was thought he was on the road to recovery but a turn for the worse came Saturday and he passed on Sunday morning. Mr. Fawver was noted for his honest, straight-forward dealings with his fellow man. He always stood for right and was a man among men. A kind and loving husband and brother; his every act was to do good. To say that he had been successful in a business way is putting it mildly. He was reputed to be the richest person in Barry county and in all his vast holdings, there was not one "dirty" dollar. A hard worker, splendid manager, earning honestly, every dollar he possessed. He and his honorable brother, C. C. Fawver, have been associated together in a business way all their lives and due to their untiring progressive and honorable efforts, have accumulated a vast amount of wealth. Last Monday, at the home, he lay in repose while multitudes of friends gathered to pay their last love and respects. There in the home where he had lived for almost a half century, there in the old home where his good wife bade adieu and went on into the World Beyond; where, as the years passed on, the son married and bade the home nest good-bye as he went out into the world to make his own home, there in the old home with now only the grief stricken wife, gathered sorrowing relatives and friends; sorrowing, grieving and yet glad - glad that they had known the man whose earthly remains lay at rest before them - glad that they had known his friendship and his influence - glad that they could know that he had accomplished much - glad that his life could be pointed to as one of usefulness and well spent, one , if followed , would make the world a better place in which to live. The funeral services were beautiful and touching and fitting, and when the bowed heads gentle hands lowered the beautiful casket into the grave in the Seligman cemetery, Monday afternoon, tears fell unheeded as the body was returned to the earth from whence it came just as the soul had returned to the Creator who sent it here to accomplish its mission. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. M. Smith of Exeter. Many beautiful floral emblems were received by the family from friends near and far, as evidence of the high esteem in which he was held. Seligman business houses were closed during the services. Pall bearers were all nephews of the deceased and were: Leon and Lionel Hulsey, Lee Collier, Leslie Fawver, Floyd Fawver and Earl McCollum. The deceased was born and reared near Seligman where he enjoyed the esteem and confidence of a large circle of friends. He was a young man of excellent habits and had an ambition to accomplish success in life. The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, in charge of Rev. T. H. Hickman, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Seligman Cemetery. Foster and Mrs. Foster. - Cassville Republican, June 4, 1936 - Dr. J. S. FOSTER DEAD - Had Practiced Medicine At Seligman For 51 Years - Dr. J. S. Foster, widely known resident of Seligman for more that one-half a century, passed away at the home of his son, Clyde Foster, in Kansas City, May 26, at the age of 86. His body was brought back to his old home town, Seligman, for funeral services and burial. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon, conducted by a Presbyterian minister of Rogers, Ark. A more detailed sketch of Dr. Foster and of the funeral service will be found in the Seligman correspondent's column in this paper. Dr. Foster located in Seligman for the practice of his profession a short time after that town was established. The remainder of his active life was spent there. His life was that of the average American country doctor. For a little more than a half century he answered the calls of those needing the care and treatment of a physician. He was faithful to his profession and also endeavored to do his share of the work necessary in carrying on community activities. In 1932, after having passed his eightieth year, he retired from active professional duties and went to Kansas City to make his home with his son. Mrs. Foster passed away a number of years ago. - Seligman News: Dr. J. S. Foster was born at Pea Ridge, Ark., Feb. 26, 1850, and died at the home of his son, Clyde, in Kansas City, May 26, 1936, at the age of 86 years and 3 months. Funeral services were held at the Seligman Union church on May 30th by a Presbyterian minister from Rogers, Assisted by a local choir of singers. A short but fine eulogistic talk was made by Senator Gene Frost, now of Cassville but a native of Seligman. He was laid to rest in the Seligman cemetery by the side of his wife who preceded him some years ago. He leaves to mourn his passing on, son, Clyde, two sisters one brother, Edward of Pea Ridge, Ark., besides others relatives and numerous friends. In 1881, when the town was about a year old, he located with his father-in-law, the late Dr. H. K. Legg, in Seligman for the practice of medicine; and was actively engaged here in that profession until 1932, when the infirmities of old age compelled him to give it up and go to Kansas City to live with his son; He graduated from Cane Hill College in Washington county, Ark., in the 70's, and for some time taught school. He studied law also and was admitted to the bar. Foster has returned after a few days visit with her son, Clyde. - Cassville Democrat, May 8, 1920 - Mrs. J. S. Foster has been seriously ill since April 9. On the 24th, Dr. Foster took her to Dr. Huntington's hospital where Dr. Bolton performed a difficult and serious operation, which was a success. Mrs. Foster is improving rapidly. There many friends rejoice with the family. Many beautiful flowers have been sent to the sick room. Their son Clyde and wife of Kansas City came home to assist in care of his mother. - Cassville Democrat, April 28, 1928 - The many relatives and friends of Mrs. J. S. Foster, an old and highly respected citizen of Seligman, will be grieved to learn of her death which occurred at a Rogers, Ark., hospital Monday evening, following an operation for removal of a tumor. Mrs. Foster had been in declining health for sometime and the first day following the operation it was thought she would survive but a change for the worse soon came and she passed on in a few hours. She was the wife of Dr. Foster, a pioneer and honorable physician and surgeon of Seligman and was prominent in civil and church work in that community. She was a prominent Rebekah and had served as District Deputy President. Mrs. Foster was a woman that was greatly loved by all who knew her, and during the long number of years that she had resided in the community, she had done much to assist in relieving suffering humanity. She is survived by her grief stricken husband and one son who resided in Kansas City. Impressive funeral services were conducted at Seligman Wednesday afternoon and the funeral was one of the largest held in that section for many years. A mixed quartet from Cassville furnished music. Interment was made in the Seligman cemetery. Foster was born in Hawkins county, Tenn. May 24, 1853. When six years of age her parents, Dr. H. K. Legg and wife moved to Greenfield, Mo. where she grew into womanhood. She was considered one of the most beautiful, accomplished and popular young ladies at the University of Arkansas. It was in Washburn she met Dr. J. S. Foster to whom she was married on Feb. 24, 1880 and after their marriage they made their home in Seligman, Mo. She was a very faithful worker in her community however, always keeping in mind her home, duties and untiring devotion to her husband. Mrs. Foster passed away Monday, April 23, in the Home Hospital of this city. She leaves her husband, Dr. J.S. Foster, Seligman; one son, Clyde S. Foster, Kansas City; two sisters, Mrs. Maggie Park, Garfield and Mrs. J.W. Bryant, Rogers; and one brother, James Lee of Garfield. Frost, two brothers: Robert Frost and Dale Frost, one son, Dean Allen Frost, and one grandchild, Raymond Arevalo. David attended Gratton Elementary and Denair High School, in Denair, CA. He loved taking care of horses in his youth, and even used to ride one to school. He married Margaret "Kathy" Blackard on June 20, 1970, and lived in California until 1984 before moving to Seligman, MO to farm and haul feed. He worked hard as an independent owner-operator for fifty-six years, hauling his last load just three weeks before passing away. This is a testament to his strong work ethic. Gladden Died: After a lingering illness and months of feeble health, Dr. Robert Burn Gladden of Purdy passed away in the state hospital at Nevada for the insane Tuesday morning. His mental condition came as result of a nervous break down from which he had been suffering for many months. Deceased was born in Arkansas in 1854 and in that state he grew to manhood. In 1881 he graduated from the Little Rock Medical College and engaged in the practice of medical profession in Sebastian and Benton Counties, Ark., until 1883, when he came to Barry County and located at Purdy. There soon became well known professionally and employed the pride of taking an active part in the civic life of the community. In 1898 he moved to Cassville and lived here until 1902 when he went to Monett and practiced his profession until but three years ago when he retired from his work on account of poor health. Since then he visited different points in Texas and Oklahoma with the view of recovering his former health but it was all in vain and he returned to Purdy some months ago to reside. Dr. Gladden was one of the very prominent citizens of the county and was well know in the county professionally. He is survived by a wife and a son, Dr. Earl Gladden, who is a practicing physician at Kiefer, Okla.
