SSW: Louisa H. - Research Note: Parents were Milton Henry Utter and Sarah Allen. He first married Matilda Adaline Parker on Mar. 19, 1874 in Tipton Co., IN. He second married Louisa Harbourt in 1879. - Cassville Democrat, April 16, 1904 - Shady Grove News: D. A. Utter and family, O. R. Boyer and wife, Mrs. Judge Utter and Misses Zelma carver and Gertie Twilligar attended the surprise dinner given C. J. Utter of near Sunrise. The dinner was in honor of his 60th birthday anniversary. He is a brother of the late Judge Utter. There was a large crowd present and all enjoyed themselves, fine eating and listening of the music furnished by friends. - Wheaton Journal, April 11, 1924 - On Monday, April 10, death claimed the spirit of Cornelius J. Utter, a farmer living a mile and a half northeast of this city. Mr. Utter had been in poor health for several years and finally succumbed to an attack of pneumonia. Cornelius Julian Utter was born near Franklin, Indiana, April 7, 1844. Was married to Adaline Parker in March 1874. To this union were born two children, Luella Jane and Willis Clinton, who survive him. He was married to Louisa Harbourt March 14, 1879. To this union were born five children, Ida May, Nora Elva and Oscar, who preceded him to the Great Beyond. Clara Belva and Henry Irvin still survive him, also his wife Louisa Utter. He became a member of the Christian church in Indiana in the year 1879. He was a member of the Christian church at Rocky Comfort at death, which occurred on his 80th birthday April 7, 1924. Funeral services were conducted at Rocky Comfort Tuesday by Rev. J. S. Research Note: Daughter of Charles E. Black and Lutecia Hanlon. Her husband was Perry Utter and he was the informant on the death certificate. Cause of death was self inflicted shot gun wound to the chest. - Karen's Notes: Perry married Delva on June 26, 1934 in Eureka, Greenwood Co., KS. They moved to Rocky Comfort in 1950. Delva was born with leukemia. She became despondent and depressed and shot herself. - Rocky Comfort Woman Kills Self with Shotgun: Mrs. Perry Utter, 39 years old, a Rocky Comfort resident, shot and killed herself some time between 5:30 and 7 o'clock Monday morning. Dr. Fred R. Clark, who was called to the home about 7:15 o'clock said that Mrs. Utter probably died some time between 6 and 6:30 a.m. Mrs utter and a son, Wayne, were alone, while Mr. Utter and another son, Ronnie, were working at Chase, KS. According to Coroner, R. M. Humphrey, Jr., and McDonald Co. Sheriff Jess Baker, Mrs. Utter apparently set the alarm for 5:30 in the morning. She got up, fixed breakfast for her son, who was asleep in another room, then sat on the bed, placed a 20 gauge shotgun on the foot of the bed and the barrel of the gun against her chest and pulled the trigger. The charge of shot passed through her body, part landing in the headboard of the bed and the remainder struck the wall. The son knew nothing of the tragedy until he was awakened about 7 by the phone ringing. He got up, answered the phone and then found his mother lying on her bed dead. No explanation could be given for her death except she lost her parents within the past two years and she had become despondent, especially during the past few months. Her mother died May 2, 1954 and her father died Jan. 25, 1955. Her usual disposition was pleasant and she was well liked by all who knew her. Mrs. Nelson was born June 20, 1925, in Pierce City, the daughter of Paul E. and Josephine Carbone (Sears) Pearson. She worked in a defense plant in Culver City, California, clerked in grocery stores in Pierce City and Webb City, taught school in 1947 in Ridgley, and worked at Armour Turkey Packing Plant in Monett until its closure in 1977. She retired from Fasco Industries in Cassville in 1984 after seven years of employment. She attended the Church of Christ in Exeter. She married Olin Toney Utter on October 31, 1946 at Cassville, Barry Co. MO., and he preceded her in death December 31, 1966. She married Dennis Dink Nelson on July 31, 1971, and he preceded her in death September 22, 1983. Survivors include two sons; one daughter; one step-daughter; two sisters; 17 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Leann Elkins; two brothers and two grandchildren. Services will be 10 a.m. tomorrow, February 16, at Fohn Funeral Home-Williamson Chapel in Cassville with Bob Stafford, minister, officiating. It was in California that she met and married the love of her life, Lowell "Red" Vaughn, and after starting their family with their four boys, moved to McDonald County where Estelle and Red would lay down lasting roots and build a legacy of family, faith, and love that would last for generations. On the farm, south of Longview, Missouri, Estelle and Red raised their 4 boys and gave shelter and love to many children in foster care. Estelle worked alongside Red on the farm for over 30 years until his health and retirement required a move to the city. Veltum married Maggie Payne on Nov. 15, 1908 in Fairview, Newton Co., MO. - Wheaton Journal, April 11, 1929 - Edward Veltum was born in Yorkshire, England July 14, 1848 and died at his home two miles south of Rocky Comfort April 4, 1929. Age 80 years, 8 months and 21 days. He came to this country with his parents when 7 years old. He was a mechanic by trade, graduating in brick and stone work at Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1866 at the age of 18 and received his diploma in plastering in Chicago in 1870. He was united in marriage to Margaret Elizabeth Payne Nov. 15, 1908. He was converted and joined the Protestant Methodist Church at Fairview, Mo., in 1912. He is survived by his widow and 7 stepchildren: Mrs. George R. Barnett, James R. Payne, W. H. Payne, Noah Payne and Mrs. James C. Long all of Rocky Comfort and T. P. and H. C. Payne of Joplin, Mo. Funeral services were conducted Friday April 5, at the Rocky Comfort Baptist Church, by Rev. SSW: Winifred L. - Inscription: "Wed Apr. 22, 1945" - Research Note: Son of Ray and Lola (Holder) Vore. After graduating from Dacoma, Oklahoma High School, he left home at the age of 15 to attend college. He worked a variety of jobs to include living and working in a dry cleaners to help pay his room and board. During his undergraduate work, he became a two-time Golden Gloves Oklahoma State Boxing Champion and was a track letterman. He graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in 1939. Jack also did graduate work in Science at Northwestern Oklahoma State and seminary study at Anderson Indiana University. Jack had accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior at an early age and seriously considered the ministry. However, he eventually came to believe that he could best do God's work as a high school teacher and coach. Jack taught math and science from 1941 until 1985 in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri and coached football, basketball, and track in Oklahoma and Kansas. Throughout his teaching career, he raised quarter horses and Hereford cattle. During the 1960's he developed Vore Herefords, a polled Hereford operation that produced a national champion bull in 1981 and continued to develop quality breeding stock until the late 1990's. While he was head football coach at Hugoton, Kansas, he was united in marriage with Winifred L. "Winnie" Miller on April 22, 1945. Born to this marriage were three boys: Jack, Jim, and Carl.
