Research Note: Daughter of Richard Landon Wolfenbarger and Martha Clementine Lay. Her husband was William George Needham. - Mrs. W. G. Needham died at her home near Rocky Comfort, Thursday, Jan. 9. She was born in Union Co., TN in 1875 and lived there until 1902 when she came with her husband and family to Newton Co. They lived on the Clements place at Hammers school house until five years ago when they moved to Rocky Comfort. She was a church member and lived a true Christian life, a devoted mother and loving wife until her death. Cause of death was meningitis following chronic abscess of the brain after a fracture of the skull in the War. The Dr. was W. M. Jones of the U. S. Marine Hospital, St. Louis, MO. Dole Nicely of Rocky Comfort, MO was the informant on the death certificate. - Wheaton Journal Friday March 12, 1920 - IN MEMORY OF JOHN WALTER NICELY - By request I will attempt to write a short sketch of the life and death of one of our most highly respected young men. It seems very sad indeed when we see our young men who have just entered into manhood and have begin a life of right and usefulness stricken down in death, but when God, who is the ruler of all things, sees fit in his great wisdom to call one of our friends and loved one away, no matter what stage of life we should be reconciled to it, for we know that God knows best and does all things right. John Walter Nicely was born June 6, 1892. Died March 9, 1920, age 27 years 9 months and 3 days. Volunteered his services to the Government in the Great World War and was put in Co. 3 (??) ( ??) 169 D. B. Feb. 16, 1918. Received an honorable discharge Dec. 24th of the same year. While he did not see any service over seas he was just as important a part of the service and faithfully and cheerfully discharged his duty. While in the Army he was in a train wreck and received a fractured skull which was somehow overlooked by the attending physician and was discharged with said injury unattended. Some time after he came home his head began to hurt him and he became so weak he could not do any work, yet not knowing the real cause. Everything that loving hands could do for him was done yet he became worse and was taken to a Joplin hospital. On Dec. 21, 1919 an operation was performed, taking out a piece of skull which was pressing the brain and it seemed for a while he would get well. But he became worse again and was taken to a St. Louis hospital where on March 3rd, 1920 a second operation was performed, discharging an abscess on the brain which resulted in his death. His body was shipped home for burial and was laid to rest in the Rocky Comfort Cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Carlin. - DIES AT ST. LOUIS HOSPITAL - Walter, more familiarly known as Yank Nicely, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Nicely of near Oshkosh died Tuesday night March 29, 1920 at a St Louis Hospital following a recent operation. About 18 months ago while in the Army, Walter received a fracture and other injuries in a train wreck and since being discharged has suffered from the effects of the skull fracture. A few months ago the fracture began affecting his mind and on Dec. 16th he was taken to the St. Johns hospital at Joplin where he was operated upon and not being satisfied with the result was sent to St. Louis where he was again operated on which resulted in his death. He retired from the lab at Missouri Steel Castings, where he worked from 1977 to 1986. He was a member of Earl J. Bruton Post #534, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Joplin Bowling Association. He was a U.S. Army Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the Ninth Air Force. He married Lorene G. Research Note: He came to the United States in 1975 with his parents, Hermila Nuñez de Luna and Antonio Luna and his two sisters. Martin never forgot his roots and visited his grandparents, Juanita Nuñez and Nicolas Nuñez and aunts and uncles in their ranch "El Tanque" near Santa Maria del Oro, Durango. Martin went to two elementary schools, Lincoln School and Jane Adams and he went to Proviso East High School in Maywood, IL. Martin worked in construction for many years in Chicago until he suffered an accident. Martin fell in love with Rosalba Alvarado, a special education teacher in Sta. Maria and they married on August 12, 1995. They lived in Maywood, IL for several years then moved to Rocky Comfort, Missouri and most recently in Wheaton, Missouri. Overton and he was the informant on the death certificate. - Wheaton Journal, November 1, 1928 - Eliza Swindle was born November 29, 1863 and died October 29, 1928 at the age of 64 years and 11 months. She was united in marriage to R. C. Overton December 24, 1882. To this union were born three children; Minnie Brattin of Wheaton, Wendell Ira, of Purdy, and Homer of Ft. Leavenworth, Kan. Her husband, her children and six grand children survive her. She leaves, also, four brothers and three sisters; John Swindle, of Deer, Ark., Lafayette, of Hollywood, Calif., George of Fairview, Abe of Santa Anna, Calif., Martha Parks, of Sumas, Washington, Nannie Overton of Purdy, Frances Holmes of Wheaton, and a step-sister, Sarah Garrison of Verona, Mo. She was an earnest student of the Bible, a true Christian, a devoted wife and mother, and the number of her friends is the number of her acquaintances. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. A. Meggison of Galena, Kan., Wednesday afternoon at the Baptist church and internment made in the Rocky Comfort Cemetery under the direction of Pogue Undertaking. - Cassville Democrat, Nov. 3, 1928 - MRS. BOB OVERTON DIES AT WHEATON - Wife of Prominent Wheaton Citizen Dies Suddenly Following Hear Attack. - Mrs. Ellen/Eliza Overton died at her home in Wheaton Monday morning following an attack of heart trouble. She took sick Sunday afternoon and died the following morning. Mrs. Overton was well known and highly respected citizen who had resided in that section of the county all her life. Mrs. Overton was about 65 years old and was daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Swindle, old time and highly respected citizens of this county. She has lived in the Shoal Creek country, where she was born, all of her life. She was a member of the church and leaves one girl, Mrs. Walter Brattin of Wheaton, and two sons. Ira, who resides n the old home place on Shoal Creek and another son residing in California. All of her children were at her bedside at the time of her passing. Mrs. Overton was a wonderful character, possessing many true friends who had loved her since childhood. She was an excellent neighbor and did much for humanity. Funeral services were conducted at the Wheaton Baptist church Wednesday afternoon, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Rocky Comfort cemetery. A large number of sorrowing relatives and friends attended the services and interment.
