Research Note: His wife was Sarah Jane Butcher. - Goodspeed's McDonald Co. History - John Long was born in Granger Co., TN, May 7, 1839, and is a son of John Long (deceased). The latter was born in PA in 1791. He removed from his native state to Granger Co., TN, where for many years he operated a large flour and saw mill and carding machine. John Long Jr., was reared at the home of his parents and liberally educated in the common schools of TN. For several years he managed his father's carding machine, but as his taste and inclination turned toward agricultural pursuits, he abandoned the former occupation in 1868, and engaged in the latter, which he has since followed. In Sept. 1860, his marriage with Sarah J. Butcher was solemnized, and to them have been born twelve children. Those living are Jacob M., Nancy E., Lucy A., Joseph S., Patrick H., Mary J., Levi P. and Elbert A. One daughter Rebecca C. married Marshall Campbell and died leaving her husband and one child, James M. Long. Jacob married Sally C. Ryan, and lives in Union Co., TN. They have two children, Mossie and James. Nancy married Samuel Skaggs, of Claiborne Co., TN, and who moved to MO in 1882. They reside in Christian Co., MO, and have three children: Oscar, Della and Sylvester. Lucy married William Maness, of Newton Co., MO. Mr. Long came to McDonald Co., MO in Feb. 1883, settling where he now resides, in Richwood Twp. His farm contains 200 acres, and is well improved. While in TN he served three years as highway commissioner. For twenty years he had been a deacon in the Baptist Church.
