KELLEY, MURDERED AT CORSICANA, MO - The Criminal Still at Large, but Officers in Every Direction Searching for Him. - One of the Most Dastardly Murders Ever Committed in Southwest Missouri. - A gentleman arrived in the city this afternoon and imparted the information of the murder of Amos N. Kelley, of Corsicana, this morning. Our informant says about 10 o'clock this morning Jim Hall and Amos N. Kelley were in the store of W. I. I. Morrow and as Kelley was leaving the store, Hall shot him in the back, the ball penetrating the heart and lodged in the breast, causing death in less than thirty minutes. It is alleged the cause of the murder was an old grudge in which Amos had appeared as an attorney for Carr and Hall as a defendant. Great excitement was created by the tearful deed, and Hall made his escape. Officers are now out in every direction looking for the criminal, but at last accounts had not succeeded in making the arrest. - Further Particulars. ----- From Tuesday's Daily. - We glean the following facts in relation to the killing of Amos N. Kelley at Corsicana yesterday, from Mr. McKinney, who was present at the inquest held by Squire Ripley last night, at Morrow's store, and who took down the testimony: It seems that Mr. Kelley had just returned from Eureka Springs with his wife on Sunday last. Early Monday morning Mr. Kelley went to town for his buggy, intending to take his wife over to his father's to execute a deed to some property to one Mrs. Stanley, when returning to his home he met James Hall and a Mr. Key coming into Corsicana. Says Hall to Kelley, "You work for nothing, do you?" To which Mr. Kelley made no reply, but drove on home. Presently Kelley and his wife returned to Corsicana and stopped at Morrow's store to have a deed filled out for Mrs. Stanley, who, by chance, met them at the store. While conversing with Mrs. Stanley about the title of the property, Hall who was sitting on the west side of the store, on the counter, came to the east counter where Kelley and Mrs. Stanley were standing and commenced a very abusive tirade on Kelley, and trying to provoke a fight. Soon the parties came to blows, and Kelley being much smaller than his antagonist got behind the counter; at this juncture Hall drew a navy revolver to shoot Kelley. Kelley seeing this motion of Hall, started to run out of the west door of the store, being unarmed. Mrs. Kelley seeing the danger of her husband attempted to rush between them, but did not succeed, and cried out to Hall not to shoot her husband, but Hall passed her and just as Kelley was turning north at the west door of the store, shot Kelley near the seventh dorsal vertebrate, the ball ranging obliquely toward the left nipple passing near or hitting the heart and possibly cutting the descending aorta. Kelley fell on the platform and to ground, and while his wife was trying to raise his prostrate form, the villian attempted to shoot him again, but did not. Kelley simply said to his wife, "Molly I am killed. Tell my brothers not to do anything unlawful, as I will be dead before any of them can see me." and soon died..There can be little doubt that the killing results from bad blood engendered by the wanton assassination of Dr. Hallidy, some three years ago, in which Kelley was reputed in some way to be connected. Hall, after the shooting walked away, down the street with his brother William, breathing curses upon his victim. No attempt was made by the many citizens, who witnessed the killing, to arrest Hall, who, no doubt, will escape. The murder was unprovoked and a most diabolical one. The end is not yet, if Hall is found. Kelley's eight brothers, who are after him, will settle his hash, no doubt. - October 2, 1879, Pierce City Weekly Empire - A gentleman from Barry Co. told us the particulars of the surrender of Jas. Hall the Kelley murderer. Hall sent in to the authorities that he was willing to surrender, but requested they send 12 men to guard him, as he feared assassination. The men were sent out and Hall taken to Cassville, he was released and walked the streets until the sheriff returned from a trip he had to make into the country. Hall, he said, had several bad cuts on his breast, and one particularly ugly wound just to the right of his naval. There seems to be some mystery connected with this murder. - March 27, 1880, Miner and Mechanic, Neosho, Missouri - Hall-Kelly Murder Trial. -- James Hall Acquitted - Our readers will remember that on the 22nd day of September, 1879, at Corsicana, Barry County, Mo., James Hall shot and killed Amos N. Kelly. That Hall surrendered himself soon after the homicide. At the March term of the Barry Circuit he was indicted for murder in the first degree. On last Thursday morning the case was stated to the jury, and the evidence of forty-four witnesses was concluded on Saturday evening. The argument was begun by Capt. James Patterson opening for the state. A. J. Harbison opening for the defence, followed by Mr. Joe Plummer and George Hubbert concluded for the defense, and O. H. Traverse concluded for the state, Mr. Wear, prosecuting attorney being sick. The time occupied by the counsel in presenting their argument was: Patterson, 1 1/2 hours; Harbison, 3 1/2; Plummer, 1 1/2; Hubbert, 6; and Traverse 7; making about twenty hours solid talk. The jury were only ten minutes in making their verdict. The defense was justification. KELLY - At his home in Newton County, MO., Round Grove (near Rocky Comfort), JAMES KELLY, aged 82 years, 2 months and 7 days. - Judge Kelly was born near Nashville, Tennessee, February 8, 1817, and grew to manhood amid the stirring events that marked the early history of that state. In 1836, July 19, he was married to Polly Randall, in Barry county, and about the same time though only nineteen years old, he was elected and served as a Justice of the Peace, being perhaps the youngest officer that ever held a judicial position. Later he was elected Sheriff of Barry county for two terms successfully, the second time by unanimous vote of the people of the opposing candidate, who had formerly been Sheriff, withdrawing for the reason as admitted, that opposition to Mr. Kelly was useless, the sentiment of the people being overwhelmingly in his favor. In 1857 Mr. Kelly came to Missouri and settled upon and improved the farm which has been the Kelly homestead ever since. Here his children grew to manhood and womanhood. Here he bestowed upon them his parting benediction when they left the paternal roof to build homes and rear families of their own, and when the father or the mother of any of these young families were stricken down by death, hither were gathered the young orphaned children, so that in addition to raising an unusually large family of their own children, Mr. and Mrs. Kelly reared many more grandchildren and all without the loss of one by death while under their care. Mr. Kelly leaves surviving him his widow, the faithful partner of his life for almost sixty-three years, and now eighty years old, also eleven of their thirteen children, Wm. J. Kelly, John M. Kelly, Rowan Kelly, James M. Kelly, Geo. R. Kelly, H. B. Kelly, A. W. Kelly and U. S. Kelly, Mrs. Rebecca Holmes, Mrs. Mary E. Kimbough and Mrs. Nancy Duncan, all of whom were with their father during his last moments. His children dead are, Amos N. Kelly and Mrs. Sarah L. Bailey. One sister, Mrs. Sarah Noyer of Exeter, Barry county, and one brother, Jasper N. Kelly, of Tennessee, also survive him. Besides his eleven children living there are also fifty-seven grandchildren and forty-six great grandchildren, in all one hundred and fourteen descendants, constituting a family of truly patriarchal proportions. Judge Kelly took a deep interest in public affairs, but during his long residence in Newton county could seldom be persuaded to accept any office the duty of which required him to leave home. His official life, therefore, consisted chiefly in serving as justice of the peace in which office his democratic neighbors repeatedly elected him, though he was a most stalwart republican. He was a member of the county court in 1866, 67, and in 1868 was elected to the legislature. His broad-minded fairness of character was well illustrated while on the bench during the troublesome time immediately following the civil war. His colleagues, for partisan reasons, removed the county public administrator and ordered him to turn over the papers and property in his hands to his successor of their appointing, and when that officer refused to obey they committed him to the county jail. Judge Kelly, though agreeing with them in politics, vigorously protested against their proceedings, and when he found that he could do nothing he indignantly left the court and went home. Until recently, Mr. Kelly enjoyed the most rugged health, but not-withstanding the long and happy years vouchsafed to him, when death came he was ready to go without a murmur. For thirty years he had been a consistent member of the Christian church on earth and he felt assured of his peace in the church above. He died as he lived, at peace with all the world and with his Maker. | KELLY, "Newt" James Newton | Aug. 18, 1867 | May 21, 1949 | SSW: Minnie J. - Research Note: Son of James Mathis Kelly and Martha Isabel Priestley. - Tri-County News, Wheaton, Barry County, Missouri - James Newton, son of Jim and Martha Kelly, was born August 18, 1866, and departed this life May 21, 1949 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Artie Griffis, of Kansas City. Age, 82 years, 9 months and 3 days. The greater part of his life was spent in the Rocky Comfort and Wheaton communities. He had been in failing health for some time and for the past few months had made his home with his daughter. He was united in marriage with Minnie Scott in 1903. To this union six children were born. The wife and four children preceded him in death. In addition to the daughter he is survived by one son, Jim, of Guam Island; two grandchildren, Leon and Viola of Kansas City; one sister, Mrs. Georgia Draper of Rocky Comfort; one brother, Ed Kelly of Gering, Ind.; one half-sister, Mrs. Bertie Gilliam of Fairview and other relatives and friends. Newt, as he was known by his many friends, was a friend to everyone and always looked on the bright side of life. No matter what his circumstances were or how bad he was feeling, he never complained and when asked how he was getting along his reply was always, "fine". Funeral services were conducted at the Rocky Comfort Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon, May 24 by a life-long friend, J. S. McQueen, whom Mr. Kelly had asked a number of years ago to conduct. Burial was made in the Rocky Comfort Cemetery under direction of the Wheaton Funeral Home. - "In the Carbon County Historical Society there was an article on 'Early History of the Little Snake River Valley,' containing an interview with Mr. John Gooldy on April 24, 1960 in which he stated that: "Knute Kelley, whom I knew and rode with one spring on the roundup, near the headwaters of Savery Creek, and in the Tullis area, cut Tom Horn while in a poker game in Baggs. Knute Kelley was from Southwestern Missouri, on the edge of the Ozark Mountains." - The family tradition was that Tom and Ed Kelly got into an argument. Tom became abusive and threatened Ed with a knife. Newt stepped in to break up the fight and Tom turned on Newt with his knife. Newt could not reach his pistol quickly enough, so he drew his knife. He slashed Tom in the neck and stomach. - History Told To Janet Oakes Hathaway By Artie Griffis About 1986: Newt and Dr. Jim Holmes (later became Dr. when older) went to Wyoming when Newt was 16 years old. They got as far as Cherryvale, KS where the Randel's lived and saved Dode Randel's life. They left there and when they ran out of money they joined the army. They left camp after three days. Jim Holmes got home sick and went home. Newt went on by himself. He went to Baggs, Wyoming and went to work for J. D. Darr, a rancher, 40 miles west of Baggs. He was foreman there until he was 36 years old. He got to know Butch Cassidy, Bert Charters (who gave Artie a palomino mare), Sundance Kid and Etta Place. He went to the Hole-in-the-Wall where they hid out. After, he came home and married Minnie. He went back to Wyoming twice. He attend Upper Lincoln Grade School and Clay County Community High School, graduating as a Ag major in 1936. After high school, Frank worked at the Swift Company in Denver, Colorado. He returned to Clay Center and took over the family dairy farm shortly after his father passed in 1943. In 1947, he married Olive Gladys Sandberg and together they had five children, along with Olive's girl from a previous marriage. Frank subsequently moved to the Neosho area to run his dairy farm. He had an award-winning herd of milk cows, and was a man who loved animals and children. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a devoted Christian, and loving son, husband, father, brother, and uncle. Jerry wanted to serve his country and after three attempts to enlist he was accepted in the Army, from May, 1967, to June, 1970. Jerry was a combat veteran of Vietnam, where he was awarded the National Defense Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, two Purple Hearts and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He was honorably discharged in 1973. Jerry then went to work for the United States Postal Service, where he retired after thirty-three years of service. As a small child she moved with her family to the Wheaton, MO area. Cecile spent her youth attending Wheaton public schools. She married Quilla H. Kimbrough on June 20, 1925. To this union were born two sons. Quilla and Cecile had been raised on a farm and they continued to farm after their marriage in the Tipton Ford and Wheaton areas. In April, 1962 they opened the Junction Dinner House, south of Wheaton. After Quilla's death on November 7, 1967, Cecile continued to operate the restaurant until 1972. Upon selling the restaurant she relocated to Neosho, MO and joined the Hillcrest Church of Christ. In Neosho, she worked for J.B. Shop and Lindsay's Department Store until 1978. She was a member of the Aerobic Club and Neosho Area Widow to Widow. She volunteered as a Pink Lady for Sale Hospital (now Freeman Neosho Hospital) donating over 1500 hours. In January, 2001 she retired to Marshall, MO, making her home at Golden Oaks Assisted Living. In addition to her husband, Cecile is preceded in death by her sons, Quilla Kimbrough, Jr. in July, 1999 and Bill Kimbrough in January, 2007, as well as one granddaughter, Brenda Freund of Neosho in November, 2003.
