Research Note: His wife was Pruda Carter. Son of John Carter and Rose Lefler. Pruda was the informant on the death certificate. - Wheaton Journal, Feb. 28, 1957 - Funeral services for Calvin Carter of Wheaton were held at the Rocky Comfort Baptist Church Sunday afternoon, Feb. 24 by Rev. Chas. VanZandt of Cassville, assisted by Rev. Coy Holmes. Burial was made in the Rocky Comfort Cemetery under direction of the McQueen Funeral Home. Mr. Carter died at 5 o'clock Saturday morning, Feb. 23 in the Wheaton Hospital where he had been taken Thursday suffering with pneumonia. Calvin or "Dimmer", as he was called by his friends, was born May 26, 1884, near Stella, Mo. At the time of his death he was 72 years, 8 months and 27 days old. He lived his entire life in the Stella and Wheaton communities. He and his wife had resided in Wheaton for 20 years where he operated a Phillips 66 service station. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Pruda W. Daughter of Bedford Isaiah Webb born TN and Louvicie Patterson born AR. - Wheaton Journal, Oct. 24, 1974 - Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Prosperity Baptist Church, Rocky Comfort, for Mrs. Pruda W. Carter, 86, who died Saturday morning at Sale Memorial Hospital, Neosho, where she had been a patient nine days. Don Dettenbaugh, Minister, officiated. Burial was in Rocky Comfort Cemetery under the direction of McQueen Funeral Home. Mrs. Carter was born Aug. 15, 1888 in Barry County and had lived in this area her entire life. She was a retired school teacher and had taught at Midway, Fairview, Stella, Goodman, and Wheaton schools. She was a member of the Christian Church and the Wheaton Order of Eastern Star No. 4. She was also a member of Azotus Shrine, No. 5, WSJ, at Joplin. Mrs. Carter married Calvin Carter in 1912. He died Feb. 23, 1957. She departed this life at 7:30 a.m. Saturday Jan. 31, age 91 yrs. 4 Months and 18 days. She moved with her parents from Logan Co. to Graves Co., Ky., when a girl. She was married to Wiley J. Cartwright, Jan. 17, 1850. To this union was born ten children none of which survive her. They are - William Cartwright of Union City, Tennessee, Mrs. Sarah E. Bragg of Granby, Mo., Mrs. J. W. Gary of Doniphan, Mo., Franklin R. Cartwright of Wheaton, Mo., John H. Cartwright of Larkins, Florida, Mrs. A. C. Gesell of Cotter, AK., Asa J. Cartwright of Wheaton, Mo., Mrs. J. R. Borth of Doniphan, Mo., Mrs. J. W. Gephart of Stella, Mo., James C. Cartwright died in his infancy. She was a family of thirteen children, eight boys and five girls only two of which survive her, Jane McGhee of Pulaska, Mo. and Mrs. Mary Smith of DeQueen, Ark. She was an industrious and persevering woman; her duties of life were performed uncomplainingly. She was a loving wife and a devoted mother. To meet her was to gain a friend. Her consistent life enabled her to number her friends by her acquaintances. She professed her faith in Christ in early childhood and united with the Missionary Baptist Church in Kentucky. When her husband and family moved to Barry Co., Mo. in 1874 from Kentucky they brought their letters and united with the Prosperity Church of Rocky Comfort Mo. She was a faithful and consistent member of this church until death. Throughout her long life she bore her misfortunes and sorrow with the greatest fortitude. During her illness of several weeks she was always hopeful of recovering and never complained, but bore her afflictions well. Research Note: Son of Larkin Cathey and Elizabeth Ann Palmer. - Wheaton Journal, November 28, 1924 - The entire town and community was terribly shocked Thursday morning when they learned that J. T. Cathey, a well-known citizen of Wheaton had died at 11:30 Wednesday night. Mr. Cathey was owner of the Ozark Bakery and Cafe here, which was run by his wife, while he, himself, was section foreman for the M. and N. A. Railway Company. Mr. Cathey left the Cafe a short time ahead of his wife, who closed the Cafe about eleven o'clock. When she arrived home her husband was feeling bad and trying to vomit. He said he was pretty sick, but his wife only thought he had eaten too much supper. He got worse of a sudden and his wife called the doctor and he died just as the doctor arrived. Dr. Holmes said he died of heart trouble and had he arrived sooner he could not have saved his life. Funeral services have not been completely arranged as none of the children have arrived on account of the death being so sudden. - Wheaton Journal, December 5, 1924 - John T. Cathey was born May 12, 1860 in Jacinto, Miss., died Nov. 26, 1924 at his home in Wheaton, Mo. He was married December 26,1883 to Miss Ella Holder. To this union were born three children who are Mrs. Alla Grover of St. Louis, Mrs. Homer Little of Heber Springs, Ark. and Sumpter Cathey of Wheaton. Besides the wife and children he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Sally Maxey of Little Rock, Ark. and Mrs. Ida Posey of Kensett, Ark. In 1892 they moved to Heber Springs, Ark. For the past sixteen years, Mr. Cathey had served the M. and N. A. Railroad in the capacity of section foreman and was one of the few men who remained with the road during the recent strike trouble. About three years ago Mr. Cathey and family moved to Wheaton and during this time his quiet unassuming manners and unquestionable honesty and integrity has won many friends who will sadly miss him. He professed his faith in Christ in his boyhood days. Inscription: "MISSOURI AD2 US NAVY - Research Note: Miner and Mechanics, March 16, 1956 - Bill Mac Christian, son of Victor Younce and Leon (Hounshell) Christian, was born at Rocky Comfort, Missouri, October 19,1932 and departed this life March 2,1956 near Okmulgee, Oklahoma. He lived at Rocky Comfort until he was seven years. He then moved to Neosho with this family where he graduated from High School in 1950. He played football and basketball, was a member of the High School track team, was a member of the band and chorus, participated in public speaking and was a representative to Boys State in his senior year. He was a member of the Methodist Church active in youth work and because of his interest in summer camp work, a memorial fund in being given in his memory to the camp being built at El Dorado Springs, Missouri for the Southwest Missouri Conference. He attended college at Southwest Missouri State one year and had spent four years in the Navy. He married August 5th 1855 to Miss Jan Lapean of Wales, Massachusetts. Bill had just finished a course in flying at Ross School of Aviation in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which included the ratings of Commercial, Instrument and Instructors Licenses. He had just returned from New York City Thursday where he had been accepted by Pan-American Air Lines for a position as Co-Pilot. - Neosho Daily News, March 2, 1956 - Mr. Christian was killed Friday afternoon when a privately-owned twin engined Place, carrying three other passengers, crashed near Okmulgee, Oklahoma. An eye witness reported the craft broke into a solid sheet of flame when it struck the ground. Also killed in the crash were two sisters, Jerry Jarboe, age 20, and Mrs. James Henry Patterson, daughters of Joe Jarboe, prominent Tulsa livestock broker and Rex O. Christian was one of the most notorious figures of the war in Southwest Missouri. - Excerpt from a Report by Captain Joseph Peevy of a Confederate Scout into Southwest Missouri, April, 1863 - On the border, both in Arkansas and Missouri, they are murdering every Southern man going north or coming south. West of Cassville, in Barry County, a first lieutenant (Robert H. Christian) of the Missouri militia committed one of the most diabolical, cold-blooded murders that I heard of during my trip. Four old citizens of that county had gone to the brush, fearing that by remaining at home they would be murdered. Their names were Asa Chilcutt (who was recruiting for the C. S. Army), Elias Price, Thomas Dilworth, and Lee Chilcutt. Asa Chilcutt was taken very sick, and sent for Dr. Harris, a Southern man. The doctor came as requested, and, while there, this man Christian and 17 other militia came suddenly upon their camp. Lee Chilcutt made his escape. The others were captured, and disposed of as follows: Asa Chilcutt, the sick man, was shot to death while lying on his pallet unable to move. He was shot some six or seven times by this leading murderer, Christian. They marched the others 150 yards to a ridge, and, not heeding their age or prayers for mercy, which were heard by the citizens living near by, they shot and killed the doctor and the others, all of them being shot two or three times through the head and as many more times through the body. They (the Federals) then left them, and, passing a house near by, told the lady that they "had killed four old bucks out there, and if they had any friends they had better bury them." This man Christian also tried to hire two ladies, with sugar, coffee, ect. to poison Southern men lying in the brush. Christian proposed furnishing the poison and also the subsistence, and would pay them well if they accepted his proposition. The names of the ladies are Rhoda Laton and Mrs. Simms, and every word of all the above can be proven in every particular. I have given you the above narrative of Christian's acts at the request of the public living in that section. They look to you as the avenger of their wrongs. - Excerpt from Interview of F. L. Moore in the Indian Pioneer Papers - My parents were Samuel and Poly Moore, nee Beeler, both born and raised and married in East Tennessee, near Knoxville. I was the youngest of several children and was born February 7, 1854 on Indian Creek in Newton County, Missouri. We left our Missouri home the last year of the War, after Price made his raid from Missouri to Texas, and our family moved to Texas and stayed till after the War. Old Bob Christian, who lived near Newtonia, Missouri, was the head of a bunch that bushwhacked in our part of the county. They robbed, stole, and killed; burned houses and tortured as well. Old Bob, trying to force the women to tell where the men were, would pull off the finger nails of the women with bullet molds. He would go so far in his torture as to cut off their ears. He and his bunch burned our house twice and would not let us save anything; he forced us to stand by and see our home and all our belongings burn; our beds, bedding and what we had to eat as well as the children's clothes, etc. He hated my father, as we were rebels, and when Uncle Lewis Moore came or rather stopped to see his step-mother, Bob Christian thought Uncle Lewis was my father. Bob shot Uncle Lewis and then, hanging his body to a tree, shot it to pieces. After that, on the way to our house this raiding party met my Sister Nan, who lived near, and Bob said to her, "I am the man that killed your G__d__ Daddy." Reaching our house, they set fire to it. He struck my mother over the head with a fire chunk, and she carried to her grave a big scar of the burn. Shortly after that, Father met Bob and told him, "I am going to kill you for killing Lewis." He shot and crippled him, disarming him. Bob begged him not to kill him, but was told that he was going to get some of the torture that he had been giving others. Father scalped him while he was still alive and hollering. Afterwards he took the scalp, washed it in the creek, rolled it up and put it in his pocket. General Price had offered a reward for the capture of Christian, but my father's hatred of Bob for the murder of Uncle Lewis was so intense that he killed him instead of taking him alive. - Samuel Moore, the slayer of Bob Christian, was alleged to have been a member of Quantrill's band and was himself killed by John Lacey and H. Brooks, at Burnett, Texas. - Robert H. Christian died Saturday, June 6, at 5 a.m. at the Cardwell hospital in Stella. He was born Oct. 26, 1864, at Newtonia, Mo. He was the last survivor of the Christian family except one niece in California. His brothers, all dead, were Trustlow, William and Tom. Deceased was widely known and respected throughout the Southwest. One of his closest friends was H. M. Ritchey of Neosho, who knew Bob from the time of his birth to the date of his death. Christian was found dead in his bed at his home southwest of Rocky Comfort early Saturday morning, November 17. Tom, as he was commonly called, lived on the old home place where he was born, his entire life. He was born August 4, 1859, making him 70 years, 3 months and 13 days old. He was afflicted with tuberculosis and stayed close to home. He was visited Saturday night by Chas. Houser but requested that he turn out the light and leave as he wished to sleep. Mr. Houser left him, thinking he was not in serious condition but when he returned Sunday morning he found him in the same position dead. He leaves one brother, R. H. Christian, one nephew and two nieces. Funeral services were conducted by J. S. He served 15 years as industrial surgeon at Ford Motor Company Receiving Hospital and practiced at Riverside Hospital, Trenton, Michigan, where he served as chief of staff and head of the obstetrics-gynecology department. He served in the U.S. Navy Medical Department from 1925-1929. Dr. Clark moved to Wheaton 29 years ago from Wyandotte, Michigan. he practiced at South Barry County Hospital, Cassville, and Cardwell Memorial Hospital, Stella, where he served several years as chief of staff. SSW: Mary C. - Research Note: Death certificate gives his year of birth as 1866. He was a merchant. Son of Noah Cullers born VA and Lydia (Clem) Cullers born VA. Catherine Cullers of Lawrence, KS was the informant. - Wheaton Journal, March 28, 1929 - Samuel M. Cullers, highly respected citizen of McDonald County, was born in Grundy County, Missouri Dec. 9, 1857, and died March 11, 1929 at his home south of Rocky Comfort at the age of 72 years, 3 months and 2 days. In his young boyhood his parents moved with him to Illinois. Later they moved to Texas and lived there for a time. When he was 18 years of age they moved to a farm southwest of Rocky Comfort. Here and in this region Mr. Cullers spent the remainder of his life. In 1880 he was united in marriage to Mary Caroline Plumlee. To this union were born ?? children, all of whom survive except Curtis, who died the previous October. He is also survived by a brother, Dr. D. E. Cullers of Neosho and two sisters, Mrs. I. O. Plumlee, Rocky Comfort and Mrs. Belle Lentz of Grove, Oklahoma. For a number of years, Mr. Cullers was a teacher in McDonald and adjoining counties. He was one of the first rural mail carriers in McDonald County. For the last four years he was engaged in the mercantile business southwest of Rocky Comfort. Rev. Erickson of near Monett conducted the funeral services at the Rocky Comfort Baptist Church Friday, March 15. The pallbearers were the sons and sons-in-laws.
