A veteran of the Mexican War, serving in New York 7th Infantry, Co. G as a Physician at Fort Monroe from January 1847 to June 1849. He married Lydia Faucett on Apr. 6, 1838 in Sangamon Co., IL. He married Elizabeth Battershell on Dec. 7, 1848 in Pike Co., IL. 1860 Census, his wife is Catherine, Webster Co., MO. 1870 Census, wife still Catherine, White River Twp., Barry Co., MO. SSW: Virgil - Research Note: Daughter of William S. and Mariah (Hilton) Wilcox. She first married John Sanders on February 26, 1868 in Barry Co., MO. and second Rev. Virgil Kimball, married before about 1879. - September 17, 1914, Thursday, Cassville Republican, Barry Co., MO - Sad Death: Mrs. Kimball, wife of Rev. Virgil Kimball, was thrown from a buggy and killed in a runaway about one and a half miles, south of Shell Knob, Thursday morning of last week. Mrs. Kimball had spent Wednesday night at the home of J. W. Brock attending her grandson, Willis Brock, who was sick with typhoid fever, and was returning home in company with her granddaughter, Miss Mayme Brock, when the sad accident occurred. Mrs. Kimball was driving their family mare with a bridle without a throat latch. The mare being in a dissatisfied condition worked off the bridle, causing her to become excited and runaway. Mrs. Kimball and Miss Brock were thrown out of the buggy. Mrs. Kimball was advanced in age and her injuries proved fatal within a short while after the accident. Miss Brock was only slightly injured. The funeral services were not held until Saturday afternoon owing to the lateness of the arrival of Rev. Kimball who was in Oklahoma at the time of the accident. A large number of friends of the family and of the deceased attended the funeral. Interment was made at the Painter Cemetery near Shell Knob. Rev. She is buried at Painter Cemetery under Brock. - Obit - Retired Minister Dies at Home Near Shell Knob - Cassville, MO, Sept. 1--The Rev. Virgil Kimball, 90 years old, retired minister of Shell Knob, east of here, died Sunday afternoon in his home after an illness of several months. He was a lifelong resident of Barry Co. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon in the Shell Knob Baptist church by the Rev. Charles Siler of Cassville. Burial will be in Painter Cemetery, near Shell Knob, under the direction of the Culver funeral homs. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Sarah Kimball; one son, Frank Kimball of Shell Knob, and one daughter, Mrs. Altha Berry of La Junta, CO. - Donna's Note: His death certifcate listed his wife's name as Sarah B. Kimball. He was married and a retired farmer. Culver Funeral Home, doesn't have any more data than the death certificate, except it reads that Rev. Ed Brown, Butterfield, MO, was in charge of the service that was held at the Shell Knob Baptist Church on Sept. 2, 1947. Research Note: Photo of stone at findagrave.com. Rita (Whisman) Kline passed from this life on November 8, 2016. She was born October 13, 1945 in Horatio, Arkansas and moved to Neosho with her family in 1956, where she spent her formative years and graduated from Neosho High School in 1963. She received her Master's degree in Special Education and taught special education at Carthage and Diamond Schools. She became principal at the State School of the Severely Handicapped in Joplin and then owned and operated Oakland Little Prep School and Mother Goose Daycare for several years. She then joined the Neosho Public School System as Process Coordinator for the special education department. She made her career out of helping special needs children to have better lives and she touched many children with her kindness and attention. Rita was always the life of the party and was very quick witted. Your were guaranteed to laugh whenever she was in the room. Her sister, Miriam Pray's death certificate names their parents as John W. Pray born Clearmont, OH and Susannah McDonald born PA. It reads that she died Oct. 22, 1927 and not the 2nd as Penny transcribed. It has her birth date as Oct. 29, 1843. The stone has Oct. 27, 1927 as her death date, also has Oct. 28, 1842 as her birthdate. She was buried on the 23rd, so the Oct. 22, 1927 date for her death seems to be the most accurate. - Cassville Republican, Aug. 28, 1919 - What will not grow in Barry County? Mrs. Rachel Lafontaine of Shell Knob, raised this year, a lemon that weighted one pound and six ounces. SSW: Research Note: William was married and a farmer. He was a son of Mr. Lafontaine and Mary Dupree, born IL. Mrs. Rachel Lafontaine of Shell Knob, MO was the informant. Donna's Note: The death certificate has his death date as Nov. 20, 1916. - November 30, 1916, Thursday, Cassville Republican, Barry Co., MO - At Rest, W. F. Lafontaine living near Shell Knob, died Nov. 20, at 7 a.m., at his home, age 71 years, 2 months and 5 days. W. F. Lafontaine was born Sept. 15, 1845, near Bellville, Ill. He was married to Miss Rachel Pray, May 5, 1831 at Verona, Mo., and located at Shell Knob where he made his home until death. He professed faith in Christ at the age of 38 years and united with the Free Will Baptist church and lived a devoted Christian life until death. Bro. Lafontaine held family prayer in his home until he could talk no longer. To them one child was born, "Little Mary" as we all knew her, but only lived to brighten their home until she was seven years old. Bro. Lafontaine bore his afflictions with patience although he was the confined to his bed some time. All the medical aid that could be obtained failed to relieve him of his afflictions. All who knew him well knew that his life was a good example for us to follow. Bro. Lafontaine leaves a wife, one half-brother to mourn his death. Bro. Vanwinkle, the half brother, was at his bedside when death came. He made many warm friends during his short stay here. Funeral services were conducted by Bro. Smallwood at the Baptist church to a large crowd of friends. Text: Ephesians 3: 30-21, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Painter cemetery by the side of his little girl to await the resurrection morn, when he will hear well done thou good and faithful servant enter into the joys of they Lord." We all extend to Sister Lafontaine our sympathy in this sad hour, who stood by his bedside so faithfully administering to this every want for so long. Leach who died at her home near the Knob, Tuesday at 3:00 of stomach and heart trouble, aged about 65 years. She enjoyed the high estimation of everybody who had the pleasure of her acquaintance, she walked for the good of the community in which she lived, she looked after the needy and suffering and there isn't a better word to be spoken of a person than that they helped the needy. She was a consistant member of the Christian Church at Shell Knob. Her husband two daughters, Mrs. Ola Shapen? of Springfield?, MO, and Mrs. Charles McCord, J. D. Matilda Moles married William Ledgerwood on Mar. 7, 1867 in Barry Co., MO. - March 24, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat, Barry Co., MO - Mrs. Wm. Ledgerwood Dies At Shell Knob; A splendid wife mother and neighbor has been called from earth to heaven there to bask in the sunlight of a dear Saviour, because of her acceptance of him and having lived the life prescribed in the book of books. It is consoling to relative when they pass, in this condition but the parting and separation is bitter. Mrs. Wm. Ledgerwood of near Shell Knob, passed from earth to the land beyond the seas, at her home near Shell Knob, Sunday surrounded by her aged husband and children she stood by and saw their loved ones life ebb away and at the severing of the thread of life, her spirit was waffled to Him who gave it. She died of cancer, aged 69 years, 8 months and 11 days. She grew to womanhood near Golden, and her maiden name was Moles and in early life she and Wm. Ledgerwood were married and the following named sons and daughters survive their mother: Samuel T. and Grover Ledgerwood, Mrs. Joe Whissman of and near Shell Knob, Mrs. Arthur Henbest of near Exeter, Mrs. Geo. Alexander of Oklahoma and Mrs. Amos Brock of near Shell Knob. She was a member of the Christian Church and a consecrated Christian woman, her neighbors say. Rev. G. G. Cottrell conducted funeral services Monday and the remains were interred in Painter Cemetery. - December 2, 1915, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Personal and Local News: Sam Ledgerwood of Shell Knob was in Cassville Monday and took the evening train for Springfield to buy goods for his store. He had lived in Cassville for 19 years. Clyde Ledgerwood of Cassville was his closest relative. Matilda Moles was his wife's name and he was a farmer. The funeral was held at Mill Street Church of Christ with Bro. B. F. Baur in charge of the service. The funeral was on March 20, 1963, at 2:00 P. M. Charges were sent to the children. He had been unconscious since. Just a few short days ago, this excellent character celebrated is 88th birthday, at which time the above photograph of him was made by W. T. Sallee of this city. Mr. Sallee also prepared a very interesting article on this aged character's life which appears elsewhere in this issue of the Democrat. SSW: Florene Louise - Research Note: He was a son of George David and Ethel (Howard) McIlrath. On September 1, 1936, he married Florene Louise Elliott in Liberty, Missouri. She preceded him in death December 13, 1993, after fifty-seven years of marriage. He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II in the 3446th Ordnance Medium Automotive Maintenance Company serving in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central European Campaigns. He earned the rank of Tech Sergeant and received four battle stars. He moved to Shell Knob, Missouri on May 10, 1959, to begin a career as a resort owner, opening Mac's Hidden Cove in 1961. During this time he was instrumental in starting the Central Crossing Association and serving as president from 1962 until 1968 and continuing on its Board until 1970. He was a past-president of the Shell Knob-Viola Community Building and served on its Board for ten years. He was a charter member of the Shell Knob Lions Club. He and Florene sold the resort in 1972 and started Shell Knob Insurance while starting the charter process for the Community Bank of Shell Knob. Howard was the bank president for several years and continued to be the Chairman of the Board until 2001. She second married William Franklin Mullin on Aug. 20, 1878 in Cassville, Barry Co., MO. Marriage record recorded later than the actual marriage date. - 1870 Census, Roaring River, Barry Co., MO - William Mullin, age 23; Zaida, age 26; John Jourdan, age 6; Frank Jourdon; age 4; Emma Mullin, age 2; Julia Mullin, age 19. - Son Frank is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Cassville, MO.
