Ratliff and her husband, Ron of Wichita, KS, one brother, Soloman Laverne Murphree of Coolidge, AZ; one sister, Nina Ruth Trout of Glendale, AZ; 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Only and her family moved to Arizona when she was young. She graduated from Casa Grande High School in Casa Grande, AZ. In 1956, she and Barney moved to Wichita, KS, where she worked for DeVores and Sons for many years as an accountant. Following her retirement, she and Barney moved to Shell Knob in 1984 to enjoy the lake. She attended the Viola Baptist Church in Viola, MO. She was an avid supporter of the Murphree Reunion and looked forward to attending. Funeral services were held Thursday, April 22, 2004, in Williamson Funeral Home in Shell Knob, Rev. Research Note: Son of William and Mary (Sanders) Brock. Donna's Note: His death certificate reads that his wife was Iva (Edwards) Brock. His parents were given as William J. Brock and Mary Sanders. Heart disease was given as the cause of death. His birth date is given as 10-9-1897, which is different from what the stone reads, but matches what Culver Funeral Home reported. The document reads that the information on the certificate was taken from hospital records, so it is very likely that he gave the information himself. He gave his address as 1602 Townsend St., Cassville, MO. It also reads that his length of stay in Washington Twp. was 3 years and 10 days. He was 63 years old and Culver's in Cassville took care of the body. He was buried in Painter Cemetery on July 25, 1961. The Oct. 9, 1897 date calculates his age as 63 years, 9 months and 12 days, so it is probably the correct date. Culver Funeral Home stated on their record that Horace S. Brock lived at 1602 Townsend St., Cassville, MO. He was married to Iva Munday Brock of Cassville. It gives his date of birth as Oct. 9, 1897, and listed him age 63 years old. William J. Brock was listed as his father's name and his mother was given as Mary Sanders. The cause of death was Coronary Occlusion, Arterioscerotic heart disease. He was a farmer and died July 21, 1961 at the State Hosp. #3 in Nevada, MO. Charges were sent to Edna Brock at Monett, MO. The funeral was July 25, 1961 at Culver's Chapel with Bro. His father worked for an Oil Company, so they were never needy like so many families of that era. He had a talent and a love for art, but due to lack of good art supervision in his school at that time, he didn't get to pursue it as a career. He went into the service (Air Force) in 1946 and spent most of his time in Denver, Colorado and Selma, Alabama. His family moved to a little town in Missouri, Shell Knob, while he was in the service. When he received his discharge from the Air Force, he followed them there. He married Nola Mae Swofford, from Shell Knob, on June 9th, 1948. Together, they had seven children: three sons and four daughters. Education was very important to Howard, and he was very proud that all three of his sons are college graduates, with Masters Degrees. Howard attended college at Seminole Jr. College in OK; Southwest Missouri Stat in Springfield, MO; and the Kansas City Art Institute in Kansas City, MO. His first job was teaching in country schools in Barry County, Missouri (the Ozarks). Howard moved his young family to the Kansas City area in 1953 and went to work for Bendix, where he retired after 35 years. He stated, "I have not accumulated monetary wealth, but feel rich because of my family." He has seven happily married children, 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. I. W. Brock, of a complication of troubles. Mr. Brock lacked only a few weeks of reaching his 90th birthday. He came to Barry County in 1850. He 1st married Sarah Horner. Second, on Mar. 20, 1870 he married Martha Wilson. 9 children survive him. 2 sons - Rev. I. W. Brock, at whose home he had been living for sometime, and Judge Amos Brock of Shell Knob are of the 1st marriage. The others live at a distance. During the Civil War, Mr. Brock served in the Union army. For nearly three fourths of a century he had been one of this county's highly respected citizens. He had been an invalid for the past few years but had borne his suffering patiently. In his death the county loses another of her pioneers who helped in making its early history. SSW: John Jr. - Research Note: John Brock married Sarah Brantley on Nov. 27, 1890 in Barry Co., MO. She second married Rev. Virgil Kimball, died in 1947, and buried at Painter Cemetery. Culver's Funeral Home reported that she was buried in Painter Cemetery and that her name was Sarah Kimball. She was born in Jenkins, MO, May 10, 1869 and died Dec. 3, 1962, in Iron County, Arcadia Twp., and was widowed. She was living in a Baptist Home for Aged. John Brantley was given as her father, her mother was Hannah Bayes. Mrs. Grace Ledgerwood was her closest relative and Virgil Kimball, deceased was given as her husband. The bill was charged to John W. Brock, Topeka, KS. She was 93 years old. Her death certificate gives the same birth date and death date as Culver's reported. The certificate mentions the home she was living in and that she was a widow. Delores Weiss, Ironton, MO, was the informant. It reads that she was buried in City Cemetery, Cassville, MO. SSW: Mary C. - Research Note: Son of John R. and Elizabeth (Horner) Brock. - Cassville Republican, Mar. 9, 1916 - One of the County's Prominent Citizens Passes Away Quite Suddenly. Twice Representative in Legislature. Text Hon. Wm. J. Brock died at this home near Shell Knob on Wednesday afternoon at 5:15 o'clock, March 1, following an illness of only a few days of pneumonia. The news of the death of William J. Brock brought grief to the hearts of citizens all over the county as he for years had been recognized as a valuable citizen and enjoyed the highest esteem of everybody who knew him. Only a short time ago he spent two days in this city and appeared to be in the prime of manly vigor and robust health. He was taken on Friday of pneumonia and passed away on the Wednesday following. W. J. Brock was born near Cassville, Nov 26, 1860. He grew to manhood and had lived in this county all of his life except while out of the county attending school when a young man. He was a son of the late John Brock who was one of the pioneer citizens of the eastern part of this county. He was educated in the Cassville school and at the Clark's Academy at Berryville, Ark., for many years he had engaged in teaching and farming and was successful in any work he undertook Hew as considered on of the very strongest teachers in the county. For a few years he engaged in the mercantile business and was at the time also postmaster at Shell Knob. He build up one of the most successful country stores in the county and prospered. He sold his business about three years ago and moved back to the farm. He was twice elected to represent this county in the State Legislature, and served in the 37th and the 38th General Assemblies where he was recognized as a man of sterling worth and a faithful official. He was married to Miss Mary Sanders in 1889. To them ten children were born, nine of whom are living. They are: Mrs. Agnes Hill, Mrs. Mamie Williamson, Horace, Lester, Curtis, Russell, John, Edna and the baby son. The funeral was held Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. G. G. Cottrell and interment made in the Painter Cemetery. W. J. Brock was a useful citizen in whom the people of this county had utmost confidence. He was a man above the average in intellect and was an honest, open-minded, fearless, law-abiding citizen, always interested actively in the up building of the community in which he lived and the county at large. His place will be a difficult one to fill. - Donna Cooper's Note: His death certificate reads that John R. Brock, born TN, and Elizabeth Horner, born TN, were his parents. The cause of death was pneumonia. Brock left for Jefferson City, where he will fight it out on his line if it takes all summer. - April 16, 1904, Cassville Democrat - Pasley News: W. J. Brock of Shell Knob has been employed as principal of the Pasley school with Mrs. Emily Skelton assistant. - November 9, 1911, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Shell Knob News: W. J. Brock and children took Thanksgiving dinner at S. W. Blythe's. - April 25, 1912, Thursday, Cassville Republican - W. J. Brock who for many years was one of the leading teachers of the county will take up teaching again, having accepted the Horner school, southeast of Cassville for the next term. He has been engaged in the mercantile business at Shell Knob for a few years and had not taught for some time until last year when he sold his store and taught his home school. - October 1, 1914, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Shell Knob News: S. W. Blythe of Cato spent part of last week at W. J. Brock's visiting the sick. C." - Research Note: Son of William and Mary (Sanders) Brock. - September 17, 1914, Thursday, Cassville Republican, Barry Co., MO - Succumbs to Typhoid: Willis Brock, 23 years of age, son of W. J. Brock, a prominent and well known citizen of near Shell Knob, died early Sunday morning of typhoid fever. Willis, was at the time of taking sick, engaged in teaching the Fairview school near Shell Knob. His illness from the beginning became very serious and on account of his frail constitution he gradually gave way to the disease after nine days sickness. Willis was an industrious young man with an ambition to live a life of usefulness. He possessed those traits of character that would have rounded out a useful life and he had been permitted to live. Interment was made at the Painter Cemetery Sunday afternoon following short funeral services conducted at the grave by Rev. Cottrell. - June 10, 1913, Thursday, Cassville Republican - W. J. Research Note: The death certificate for Wallace Green Bruce reads that he died on the 10th and not the 9th as the newspaper reads. William W. Bruce, born MO, and Frances Barricks, born MO, were given as his parents names. Chronic interstitial nephritis was given as the cause of death. Irvin Bruce of Shell Knob, MO was the informant. Wallace G. Bruce, age 28, married Jennie E. Ray, age 16, on Jan. 10, 1897 in Barry Co., MO. John B. Ray, father of Jennie, gave consent. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, April 18, 1918 - Shell Knob: G. W. Bruce died on the 9th and was buried at the Painter cemetery. Donna's Note: From the Monett Times - George Bunch, 101, of Tacoma, Washington, formerly of Shell Knob, died February 12. Mr. Bunch was born in Kansas. He had lived in the Shell Knob area for 55 years before moving to Tacoma, Washington, 16 months ago. He was a member of the Baptist Church in Viola. He was a retired farmer, carpenter, and school bus driver. His wife, Evelyn Bunch, preceded him in death in 1984. Survivors include one daughter, Ona Burbridge of Tacoma, Washington; one son, Gene Bunch of Merced, California; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, February 19, at Williamson Chapel in Shell Knob with Rev. Max Edmondson and Rev. Lawrence Shuey officiating.
