Informant: Mrs. Gardner of Marionville, MO. - Cassville Republican, Aug. 13, 1914 - After an illness of several years from rheumatism, Uncle John Gardener passed away at his home near Osa, Wednesday, August 5. Deceased was 75 years of age and has spent his life in this immediate vicinity where he has raised a large family and leaves several children besides his wife to mourn his death. Funeral services will be conducted and interment made today at Osa Cemetery. Crane Chronicle - Goodspeed's 1888 History - John M. Gardner is a Barry Co. Missourian, born in 1842, son of Reuben and Elizabeth (Bamheart/Barnhart) Gardner, who were born and married in VA, and came to MO in 1841, locating in Barry Co., where they entered land. In 1850 he (Reuben) was seized with the "gold fever" and went to CA, where he was engaged in mining until the fall of 1853 when he started to return home, but was taken sick and died on the way, aged about forty years. Two of his sons were in CA also, and one was killed in a shaft. The mother is living in Lawrence Co. Ten of their twelve children grew to manhood and womanhood, and six are yet living: William (a resident of KS), Francis, Adeline (Mrs. J. Hemphill), Felix, John M. and Reuben. John M. has always resided in Barry Co. He made a short visit to TX and IL, before he was of age, and at the breaking out of the war, enlisted in Moore's regiment, and served until the close of hostilities, when he returned home, and has since been engaged in farming. Since 1875 he has been a resident of his present farm of 160 acres. His wife's maiden name was Margaret Ellis. She was born in TN and came to MO about 1850, when she was about four years old. Her husband was Henry Gouge. - Notes at findagrave.com: Henry Gouge was the son of Martin Gouge and Elizabeth McKinney. On Sept. 22, 1838, he mustered into militia service with Captain William Miller's company of Mounted Volunteers, in Cole County, Missouri. This was during the Missouri Mormon War, which drove Latter Day Saint settlers out of the region. He last appears in the 1860 census of Barry County, Missouri. Hemphill was born in 1837, in McMinn County, Tenn., and is a son of James and Frances (Neill) Hemphill, who were born, grew to maturity, and married in North Carolina. They immigrated by wagon to Tennessee, and in 1852 came overland to Missouri, and located on Crane Creek, where they rented land the first year, and then purchased land in Stone County, but sold this shortly after, and bought another farm, which they also soon sold, and moved to Texas. They returned to Missouri in 1860, and here the father died in 1866. He was a strong Union man during the war, and a Republican in this political views. Ten of his twelve children grew to maturity, and seven are now living: William P., Margaret (Gardner), James M., Elizabeth (Gardner), Andrew C., Mary (Seitz) and Levi M. Those dead are Irena (who died when grown), Sally (who also died after reaching mature years), Thomas (who died at the age of thirty-five), and two children who died in infancy. The mother of these children died in 1857 or 1858. She and her husband were members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Andrew C. Hemphill was thirteen years of age when he came to Missouri. He attended school in Tennessee and Missouri for some time, but his educational advantages were limited. At the age of eighteen he began earning his own living by working on a farm for $10 per month, and when twenty-two years old was married to Mary J. Gipron/Gipson, who was born in Alabama, and by her became the father of nine children, seven of whom are living: Nancy I., Martha I., Melcena, Almina, Levi M., Wesley and Hoys. Nancy and Almina are deceased. The mother died in 1878, and Mr. Hemphill took for his second wife Mary J. Hilton, who was born in West Virginia and by her is the father of one child, Tabitha. Mr. Hemphill belongs to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the I.O.O.F. and since 1874 has been a resident of his present farm of 145 acres. He served about three years in the Federal army during the late war under Capt. John Moore. Hemphill of McDowell, MO. - - August 27, 1914, Thursday, Cassville Republican - McDowell News: Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hemphill were laid to rest near their old home the family cemetery at Osa, amidst a large crowd of friends and relatives. The many friends extend their deepest sympathy to the bereaved family. Revs. John Thomas and John Allman conducted the funeral services after which the remains were placed in one grave. A large crowd attended the funeral to show these dear old people their last respect. - Death of Two Highly Respected Citizens: Mrs. Elizabeth Hemphill died Wednesday evening, Aug. 19, at the home of her son, B. L. Hemphill, of near McDowell of malaria fever, age 77 years, 1 month and 4 days. On Thursday night following, the husband, Lee M. Hemphill passed peacefully away at their home in this city of old age and a general decline of health, age 72 years, 4 months and 5 days. Mrs. Hemphill had been at McDowell only a short time visiting her children when she became sick. On account of her advanced age her illness became critical from the beginning. Mr. Hemphill had been in poor health for several months. Some weeks ago his health had improved to an extent that he was able to be up and made a few trips to town. About three weeks ago he suffered a relapse from which he gradually grew weaker until life became extinct. Funeral services were held at Osa Friday with Rev. John Thomas in charge. Their remains were interred at the Osa Cemetery. Lee M. Hemphill was born in McMinn County, Tennessee, December 15, 1842. Elizabeth Hemphill - Lusk, was born in Ripley County, Missouri, July 16, 1837. They were married July 21, 1861. They were the parents of three living children. They are L. B., Ira, and Mrs. J. D. Williams, all residing in the vicinity of McDowell. Mr. Hemphill leaves one brother, Andy Hemphill of Galena, Stone County and Mrs. Hemphill leaves one brother, John Lusk at Osa and one sister Angeline Wagnon at Dewey, Okla. Mr. and Mrs. Hemphill had lived in Barry County for a number of years and were excellent citizens. He second married Lucille (Lockhart) Gipson. - Sarah's Obit: - Cassville Republican, February 22, 1912 - Mrs. Viola Hemphill of McDowell who had been visiting her brothers, J. D. Adams of Hatton, Wash., and J. M. Adams of Grandview, Wash., and other relatives in Washington, died at Ritzville, Wash., Sunday morning, Feb. 11, after an illness of eight weeks, suffering with typhoid fever. She had purchased her ticket for her return to her home when she was taken ill. A week after she was stricken her son, Charles, eleven years old was taken with the same malady. They lay in the same room under the care of the same nurse until within a few minutes before the mother passed away. The son is considered out of danger. Mrs. Hemphill will be buried at Hatton on Monday, the 12th. Those at her bedside when death came were her husband, Ira Hemphill, and brother J. D. Adams. Mrs. Hemphill was the daughter of T. J. Adams who lived in Barry County, MO, about 18 years and her husband, Ira Hemphill is well known here, he is a son of Levi M. Hemphill of McDowell and has been a resistant of Barry County about 23 years. Clara, a daughter of deceased is at McDowell having returned from Washington some months ago. - Cassville Democrat, Sept. 3, 1927 - Ira Hemphill, prominent and old time citizen of this county, who has resided in the McDowell country, practically all of his life, died at the Smart hospital in Aurora, last Saturday night, following an attack of lockjaw or tetanus. On the evening of August 21st, Mr. Hemphill went out in the chicken yard at his home to care for the chickens and while there, stuck a nail in his foot. He returned to his home and applied home treatments to the injury. Later a doctor was summoned who order him to bed and treatments were started. On Friday following the accident, blood poison apparently set up in the foot. Which soon spread over his body, causing tetanus or lockjaw to form. Other doctors were quickly summoned and Saturday morning he was rushed to the Smart hospital, where every treatment possible to combat the disease, was administered to him. He responded in good shape to the first treatment and became easy but in a few hours he again began to suffering and despite all that was done for him, he died Saturday night. Ira Hemphill was born near Crane, MO. October 8, 1875 and he was 51 years, 10 months and 17 days old. He was a son of Levi and Elizabeth Hemphill, old time and highly respected citizens of this county during lifetime. He had lived practically all of his life in the McDowell community, where he has engaged in farming and canning. He was first married to Miss Viola Adams in the year 1874 to which union two children were born, a son, Charles of McDowell and a daughter, Mrs. Clora Coffy of Jefferson City. Mrs. Hemphill passed away in the year 1912 and in 1914 he was married again to Lucille Gipson of Crane, who survives. He also leaves one brother, Lafayette and one sister, Mrs. Alisie Williams, both of near McDowell. He also leaves 3 grandchildren. Years ago he engaged in the mercantile business at his home town and no man possessed a more extensive acquaintance throughout that section. He was a man that always stood high in the estimation of his acquaintances and was noted for his square dealings. He was well liked by all and was a big hearted man always doing good for others. Funeral services were held at the Osa church Monday afternoon by the pastor of the Crane Presbyterian Church, after which the remains were interred in the Osa cemetery. A large number of sorrowing relatives and friends gathered at the services to pay their last love and respect to their good friend and neighbor. Many beautiful floral offerings were received by the family from various parts of the country. The Democrat extends sympathy to the grief stricken family in their sad hour of bereavement. - His second wife, Lucy (Lockhart) (Gipson) Hemphill, died in 1961 in Crane, Stone Co., MO. She was the daughter of L. F. Lockhart and Harriet Ohler. Cause of death was a broken neck, caused by a fall and hitting her head on a waste basket. Buried at the Masonic Cemetery in Crane, MO. - September 12, 1912, Thursday, Cassville Republican - McDowell News: Ira Hemphill has purchased a new rubber tired buggy. - April 17, 1913, Thursday, Cassville Republican - McDowell News: Misses Clara Hemphill, Emma Bowers and Lulu Pearl with Opal Griffith of Cassville attended church at McDowell Sunday and visited Clara's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Hemphill. - July 14, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Local And Personal: Saturday evening as Ira Hemphill, John Martin and others of McDowell, were motoring to this city, with Ira's son driving and when coming down the hill near Leban Barcus residence, the car ran into Houston Bradley's buggy turning it over. One Wheel, the fifth wheel and a basket of eggs were broken. We understand the matter has been adjusted by Ira make the buggy as good as it was and paying for the eggs. A large crowd attended the funeral to show these dear old people their last respect. - Death of Two Highly Respected Citizens: Mrs. Elizabeth Hemphill died Wednesday evening, Aug. 19, at the home of her son, B. L. Hemphill, of near McDowell of malaria fever, age 77 years, 1 month and 4 days. On Thursday night following, the husband, Lee M. Hemphill passed peacefully away at their home in this city of old age and a general decline of health, age 72 years, 4 months and 5 days. Mrs. Hemphill had been at McDowell only a short time visiting her children when she became sick. On account of her advanced age her illness became critical from the beginning. Mr. Hemphill had been in poor health for several months. Some weeks ago his health had improved to an extent that he was able to be up and made a few trips to town. About three weeks ago he suffered a relapse from which he gradually grew weaker until life became extinct. Funeral services were held at Osa Friday with Rev. John Thomas in charge. Their remains were interred at the Osa Cemetery. Lee M. Hemphill was born in McMinn County, Tennessee, December 15, 1842. Elizabeth Hemphill - Lusk, was born in Ripley County, Missouri, July 16, 1837. They were married July 21, 1861. They were the parents of three living children. They are L. B., Ira, and Mrs. J. D. Williams, all residing in the vicinity of McDowell. Mr. Hemphill leaves one brother, Andy Hemphill of Galena, Stone County and Mrs. Hemphill leaves one brother, John Lusk at Osa and one sister Angeline Wagnon at Dewey, Okla. Mr. and Mrs. Hemphill had lived in Barry County for a number of years and were excellent citizens. Arvilla was the daughter of William Harrison Hemphill and Sarah Brittian. - Washington Citizen (Washington, Missouri) Friday, March 25, 1927 - DOUBLE SHOOTING: Tuesday of last week Raymond Hemphill shot D. W. Waymire, city marshal of Crane, at the home of his grandfather, Harrison Hemphill, west of Crane, when the marshal attempted to arrest him on the charge of stealing an auto in Kansas. Following the shooting Hemphill made his way on foot to the home of R. M. Lusk, 2 1/2 miles southwest of Marionville, with whom he was acquainted. Overhearing a conversation over the phone between a member of the Lusk family and J. W. Lester, a neighbor, in which reference was made to the shooting at Crane and the posse that was searching for him, went to the barn and shot himself. Hemphill was only 19 years old but was married and was the father of a child. He and his wife were estranged. Smith committed suicide at 6:30 last night at the home of R. M. Lusk, near Marionville, Mo., while a posse was scouring the country near Crane. The shooting took place at 10:30 yesterday morning when Waymire and a deputy went to the home of Smith's grandparents to arrest Smith and Elsa Sisco,16, wanted in Baxter Springs, Kansas, for the theft of an automobile. Sisco surrendered at noon but was released from custody this morning. Terror stricken when he learned a posse of 30 men were trailing him with bloodhounds, Robert Hemphill, 25 years old, turned upon himself the revolver with which he eight hours previously had wounded D. W. Waymire, 60 years old, city marshal of Crane, Mo., and ended his life as he cowered in a barn near Marionville early last night. Hemphill shot the marshal, inflicting a wound that may prove fatal, when Waymire attempted to arrest him and Frank Sisco, 16, Ponca City, Ok. The marshal had learned they were wanted in Baxter Springs, Kas., presumably on a motor car theft charge. Hemphill and Sisco both fled after the shooting, but Sisco returned a short time later and gave himself up to authorities in Crane. He said he had ridden to Crane from Oklahoma in a motor car with Hemphill. Hemphill made his way on foot to the farm of Robert Lusk, near Marionville, twenty miles west of Springfield. While he was conversing with Mr. Lusk, the telephone, on a multi-party country line, rang. W. Waymire, 60 years old, city marshal of Crane, Mo., is near death as the result of a revolver duel with Raymond Smith, 20, at 10:30 o'clock this morning, according to a message to The Leader shortly after noon today. Posses now are scouring the country near Crane for Smith, who fled in a car immediately after the shooting. City Marshal Waymire, accompanied by his deputy, William Miller, went to the home of Harrison Hemphill, two and one-half miles west of Crane this morning in search of Smith and E. R. Sisco. They carried a warrant from Baxter Springs, Kansas, charging the pair with the theft of an automobile. As the officers drove up to the Hemphill home they found Smith and Sisco in front of the place fixing a tire. Getting out of the car, Marshal Waymire advanced and told them that he had "come after them." Smith drew his revolver and immediately began shooting and Waymire fell, the bullet striking him in the abdomen and passing out of his hip. Waymire fired several shots at Smith, but none struck him. Deputy Miller immediately ran to the fallen marshal's assistance and brought him to Crane at once. Sisco came to Crane at 12 o'clock and surrendered to authorities. He denied any part in the shootings. Wayne Holmes departed this life on September 26, 2014 at his home on the banks of Crane Creek surrounded by family and his loving wife of sixty years, Mary Lou. Son of Clay and Geneva (Green) Holmes. After graduating from Aurora High School, Wayne served in the Navy for four years. After he returned, he and Mary Lou Wiley were married and started a family. He obtained a B. S. degree in English at SMS and then taught English, speech and coached football at Aurora. He moved his family to Webster Groves and taught high school English for a few years, then taught college English and literature at Cottey College for two years. During this time he obtained his Masters in English at Missouri University. He began teaching at Drury College in 1967 where he was an esteemed professor of English and American literature, creative writing, and Ozarks' folklore at Drury College for twenty-four years. In addition to their teaching occupations, Wayne and Mary Lou spent many years raising cattle, sheep, goats, mules, horses, dogs and rabbits on their 630 acre farm in Barry County. Wayne was an extraordinary story teller and writer and well known for his knowledge of Ozarks culture and folklore, much of which he wrote about in a memoir of his life growing up during the depression, titled "Rocky Comfort". In recent years he completed his revised essay on Shakespeare's play, Othello, titled "And She Gave Him a Desdemonial," outlining his evidence that the play has long been misinterpreted. It states that he was born in AR, and that his father was John Hutchison, born Knox Co., TN, and his mother Martha Blevins, born in Campbell Co., TN. He was buried April 19, 1917, Osa Cemetery. Joan listed that he died in Barry Co., MO, but his death certificate reads otherwise. Also her listing of parents does not agree with his death certificate or the funeral home records. According to both his death certificate and the King Funeral Home Records his father was George Washington Hutchison, born in GA, and his mother was listed as Mary Weaver, born in TN. His death certificate reads that John Hutchison was a son of George Washington Hutchison born GA and Mary Weaver born TN. The cause of death was given as arteriosclerosis.
