His grandparents were Edgar and Susan (Carney) Smith. - Jay served his country in the US Navy serving from 1944 to 1946. On October 1, 1946 Jay married Mary Eleanor Keck in Columbus, KS. He worked in the Eagle Pitcher lead mines, drilled water wells, worked for the newspaper office, was a guide on the river and was a master carpenter. Jay went to work for the US Corps of Engineers in 1965 retiring in 1986. His mother Amelia Madison of Scholten, MO was the informant. The death certificate reads that he was buried at Carney Cemetery. - Levi had 3 wives. His first wife Ida Glendora Sherwood, was the mother of Alfred Gilbert Madison, Adelbert William Madison, and J. Emory Madison. Levi and Ida were married Feb. 10, 1880 in Bloomington, Franklin, Nebraska and divorced in 1886. He second married Addie Alice Nixon. Notes that I found say it was a common law marriage. Levi Madison, age 43, married Mary Shelton, age 26, on Jan. 11, 1904 in Barry Co., MO. - March 10, 1910, Cassville Republican - Levi Madison of Flat Creek died February 28 of pneumonia. Research Note: Civil War Veteran, Rank PVT, Company A, Unit 86, IL US INF. He married Phylette Blanchard in 1867 and Louisa Metcalf before 1859. - Shortened bio of Miles by Baxter B. Fite III and Clifford L. Metcalf, great grandson of William Hardy Metcalf and Clara May (Kennon) Metcalf found at findagrave.com: Son of James and Mary Manning. Miles is in Hardin Co., IA with his brothers and sisters in the 1856 census, but by 1857, Miles moved on to Sac County, Iowa, where he was elected Sheriff of Sac County in 1857. It was also there in Sac County that Miles married Louisa Metcalf in 1858. One daughter, Mary, was born to them on April 5, 1859. Louisa died in August of 1861, but it is not known whether this occurred in Iowa or back in Woodford County, as Miles is known to have moved back to Woodford County about this time. In 1862, Miles was residing in Palestine Township, Woodford County, Illinois. On August 7, 1862, Miles Manning volunteered for service during the Civil War in a company which was being raised in Woodford County by William S. Magarity. Miles is known to have served faithfully beside his pards in Co. A. During this time, Miles and the men of Co. A participated in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, which helped bring an end to the occupation of Kentucky by Confederate troops; garrisoned Nashville, Tennessee; and took part in the Campaign for Chattanooga, Tennessee, culminating in the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia. On June 25, 1864, while the 86th Illinois was in the vicinity of Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, Miles became quite ill. 1st Lt. Samuel Rogers, of Co. A, stated that Miles got sick from "over fatigue and exposure while in the line of duty." In his claim for a Disability Pension in 1880, Miles stated that, "He was taken sick at Kennesaw Mtn., GA, 25 June '64 with pains in stomach and bowels ending in lung disease." Miles first was sent to an Army Hospital in Big Shanty, Georgia, where he remained until June 30, 1864. Then he was sent to Army Hospital #19 in Nashville, Tennessee, where he remained until December of 1864. Miles then was put on the Hospital Boat "Nashville", thence to Camp Butler, in Springfield, Illinois where he was "discharged for disability" from the service on April 11, 1865. Miles suffered from lung disease from his days in the service for the remainder of his life. Miles returned to Iowa and was married in Tama County, Iowa on April 12, 1867 to Phyletta (Blanchard) Metcalf, his former sister-in-law. Miles was first married to Louisa Metcalf and had the one daughter, Mary. Phyletta was married to John Metcalf, the brother of Louisa, and they had one child, William Hardy Metcalf. John is believed to have died while Miles was in the service. While Miles was in the service, his daughter, Mary, may very well have been sent to Iowa to live with family there. After he returned from the service, Miles and Phyletta married. Five children were to be born to Miles and Phyletta. The first two, twins, Ada and Ida, were born on May 9, 1868, probably at Kapa, Illinois. Miles, Phyletta, William, son of Phyletta and first husband, and Clara, moved the family for the last time, to a farm near Flat Creek, Barry County, Missouri. Less than two years after this move was made, Pvt. Miles Manning died at the age of 52 and he was laid to rest in the Old Carney Cemetery, just a short distance across Flat Creek from where they lived. Phyletta, who was almost 11 years younger, outlived Miles by almost 52 years. (Smith) Pike. - Note that the obit has different birth and death dates. - Cassville Republican, May 15, 1919 - Thomas Pike, died at his home near Flat Creek post office, Friday, May 9, at the age of 86 years. He was born in Indiana June 16, 1833 and lived there until he was 20 years old and then moved to Iowa. He later moved to Kansas where he lived until about 1859 when he came to Missouri. He had also lived in Oklahoma and in the West and came back to Barry County in 1915. He had been a sufferer for sometime but bore it all with patience. He was a member of the Baptist church and had been a loyal and faithful Christian man. He leaves a wife, two sons and two daughters, a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. The bereaved have the sympathy of the entire community. - His first wife was Calphurnia Gowing. He married Martha Ella Gaskill on June 9, 1868 in Lawrence Co., MO. He married Frances L. She was a daughter of Henry Porter near Butterfield. She as born the 18th of Oct. 1872, was married to Frank M. Rogers, Jan. 3, 1904, which was a happy union of 14 years. She was a member of the Baptist church for more than 25 years and a great Sunday school worker. She suffered a great deal but rejoiced in a Savior's love, said she was going home to mother where flowers are blooming and will bloom forever. She asked if they had any message to send as she thought she would be able to carry it, said she had happy home here but was going to a happier one in Heaven. She leaves a husband, father, four brothers, three sisters and a host of friends to mourn their loss, but trust that someday may meet her on that bright shore where partings come no more. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Davis Coones of this place. The bereaved have the heartfelt sympathy of all. - Reminiscent History Of The Ozark Region - In the history of the Rebellion the name of our subject will be found as not having borne an unimportant part in that eventful struggle. He was about twenty-two years of age when he enlisted in Company E, First Arkansas Volunteer Cavalry, and he served over three years in the United States Army. Many of his battles were in Missouri and Arkansas, and he was in the bloody fight at Fayetteville, in the latter State. He was in many fights under Maj. Charles Galloway and Col. E. R. Harrison, but was never wounded or taken prisoner. On August 23, 1865, he was discharged at Fayetteville, Arkansas, and returned to Stone County, where he has followed agricultural-cultural pursuits up to the present. Mr. Summers was born in Franklin County, Tennessee, February 24, 1839, and is a son of Samuel P. and Charity (Wells) Summers, natives of Tennessee. The former was born in Warren County and moved to Alabama with his father, also Samuel Summers, where he remained until 1855. He then came to Stone County, Missouri, and settled on James River, just below Cape Fair, where he tilled the soil until after the war. Thence he moved to Carroll County, Arkansas, and there died in 1884. He gave most of his attention to agricultural pursuits during life and was a well-to-do citizen. He was also a carpenter and chair maker at an early day. In Alabama he was married to Miss Wells, daughter of Robert Wells, who passed his entire life in that State. She was born in Tennessee and died in Carroll County, Arkansas, in 1882. Eight children were born to this union, and were named in the order of birth as follows: James, a farmer of Carroll County, Arkansas, was a soldier in the Rebellion; Price, our subject; Andrew, also a soldier in the Civil War, died in Carroll County and left a family; Elizabeth, single, died in Stone County; William, a farmer of Carroll County, Arkansas; John, a farmer of the same county, and two other children. Our subject was a young boy when he moved with his parents to Stone County, where, for various reasons, he received but a limited education. As above stated, he engaged in farming after leaving the army, and about 1886 came to his present location where he has seventy-eight acres of well-cultivated land. He has been very successful as a tiller of the soil, and is an energetic and wide-awake citizen. He is a member of the G. A. R. post at Jenkins. In politics he has been with the Republican party since the war. In 1863 he married Mrs. Martha Baker, a native of Stone County, born July 18, 1838, and the youngest of eleven children born to the marriage of Judge William Stone, an early settler and the man after whom the county is named. Mrs. Summers was first married to Mr. Baker, a brother of Judge Baker. He was a soldier and died during the war. Three children were born to Mrs. Summers' first marriage: William B., Cordelia-Delia E. and Alice J., and five to her second union: Martha E., wife of Thomas Hudson of Berry County; Charity F., wife of John Hudson, also of that county; John C., at home; Harry C., and another died unnamed. Mr. and Mrs. Summers are members of the Christian Church. Maynard Taylor was the informant on the death certificate. - Obit: With the passing of Uncle John Taylor, another of the oldest of Stone County's long time citizens has passed. John Taylor was the son of Angeline and Valentine Taylor, who came from Tennessee to Dallas County in an early day. The family moved to Stone County to the farm where Finis King now lives, near Cape Fair in 1865. He grew up on the farm and breathed the fresh air of the country as his home, all his life. He knew the hardships and the reward of hard, honest toil and was a friend to his fellow man. Nothing made him happier than to have company in his home and he was just as happy to go visiting in other people's homes. He had been in poor health for a long time but went about seeing others as long as he was able. When the final call came, he slept so quietly that no one knew. John Taylor was born in Dallas County on November 20, 1860, and passed away Sunday morning, March 10, 1940, being 70 years of age. He died on the farm where he had lived for 52 years. His wife preceded him in death in July, 1919, and his son, Maynard and family made their home with him and cared for him 'til the end. He was married November 7, 1880, to Clara Melton, daughter of Susan and J. E. Melton. She was a sister to J. E. Melton, Julia Kerr and Francis Henson. He and Clara were baptized both the same day in 1882, in Flat Creek, professing their faith which was never to be shaken. They were members of the Christian Church and were baptized by the Rev. Mr. McGee. Their children were all reared on the farm where their father and mother lived so long, three miles west of Cape Fair in a large bend with the crystal waters of Flat Creek circling it's way around the place. The house set on a high knoll, over looking the countryside. In our earliest recollections, the yard was filled with flowers—marigolds, princes. The children reared by this good couple were Ira, who died in 1918, Mrs. Gertie Henson, Mrs. Tona Bennett, and Maynard, all of Cape Fair, Rt. 1, and Melton of Fresno, California. Melton and Ira's family who live in Washington state were unable to come. Besides these relatives, he is survived by twenty grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held in the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, in the location commonly known as Carney, with burial in the Carney Cemetery in Barry County on Monday, March 11. The Rev. John Reser of Crane had charge of the funeral and Everett J. Cheatham of Galena, the internment. After the loss of her mother in 1929, Mildred being the oldest, had many responsibilities in caring for the family. The children's aunts and uncles also assisted Mildred's father in raising the children. Mildred graduated from Galena High School in 1942, and at the age of 22, started teaching. She taught at numerous one-room Barry County rural schools, including Jenkins, Cato, Shell Knob, Clay Hill, Cross Hollows, and Seligman. Following the school consolidation, she taught at Southwest for eight years and Exeter for seven years. After her retirement from teaching, she worked at FASCO for six years and Oxford Healthcare for ten years. At that time, Mildred began helping her sister Lorene babysit, which she continued for several years.
