Mrs. Isaac Epperly of Shell Knob, MO, gave the information. - Family History by Belva Blythe Easley: James Carrick Blythe was born Apr. 29, 1855 in Meigs Co., TN, the third son of William Jefferson and Martha (Bayless) Blythe and moved to Barry Co., MO with his family in 1858. Carrick, as he was called, married Mary Elmira Carney, born Oct. 1, 1859, the daughter of John and Sarah (Moore) Carney, on Nov. 28, 1880. The first child, Hattie, was born Sept. 7, 1881. Second daughter, Allie, was born June 17, 1884 and lived almost 15 months until Sept. 7, 1885. The family probably settled at Shell Knob in Barry Co. in late 1885 or early 1886 for as Hattie's son, Albert, recalls his mother always said she moved to Shell Knob when she was four years old. A warranty deed shows that Carrick and Mary Blythe purchased 80 acres of land there in 1889. A son, William (Willie) was born Jan. 26, 1886; the third daughter, Cordelia (Delia) was born Mar. 14, 1889 and a second son, John Claude, was born Jan. 31, 1894. The third son, Clyde Emmett, was born Dec. 21, 1899 and was joined by two sisters, Blanche Lulu and Zelma born Dec. 28, 1901 and Jan. 15, 1906 respectively. Carrick and Mary Blythe and all of their seven children who lived to be grown men and women, lived their entire lives in Barry Co. with the exception of Clyde (Dr. C. E.) who practiced dentistry in Aurora, MO for 34 years prior to his death Feb. 14, 1960. Mary died June 27, 1928 and Carrick died June 8, 1933. She was married to Thomas Carney in 1870, and they were the parents of six children, two dying in infancy. The remaining children: Jack Carney, Pitcher, Okla. D. F. Research Note: He was the son of Coy and Ilagene (Muse) Cope. He was a 1979 graduate of Galena High School. He married Sandra Lowe in August of 1982 and they had three beautiful daughters. George made a living farming on Carney Branch and owning/operating Cope Construction for 15 years. George was a life-long resident of Carney Branch where, from childhood, he spent many days hunting, farming, fishing, mushroom hunting (from the truck), or doing pretty much anything that put him outside on the farm and around home. This love of the farm was something that he passed on to his children and grandchildren. His daughters were often found squeezed behind his tractor seat during bailing season, asleep with him in a tree stand, or loading wood into the bed of the Scottsdale. His "grandbabies" relished every ghost story and walnut cracking session that Papa could offer. George was a smoker of meats, often smoking a flock of turkeys for Thanksgiving and delivering to neighbors and friends. He was an amateur drum player and a masterful story teller. If he wasn't at home, George could often be found entertaining the locals at V-Mar, Hudson's, or Hooten's with his latest tall tale. Mrs. Carney was the daughter of John and Nancy Clark and was born and raised in Stone County. However she made her home since her marriage to Mr. Carney on the farm where she died. Mrs. Carney is survived by her husband and seven children, who are: Cal Carney, Flat Creek, Mrs. Susan Fishback, Kansas City, Mrs. Clara Muse, Pitcher Okla., W. A. Carney, Cassville, Mrs. Willard Seitz, George and Israel Carney all of the home community. Funeral and burial services were held at the Flat Creek church Tuesday afternoon and burial made in the Carney cemetery at that place. Research Note: He was a son of Thomas and Susan (Warmouth) Carney. John and his wife Sarah Moore were listed in 1850 on the Federal Census of Barry Co., MO. - November 2, 1899, Cassville Republican - Carney: The many friends of Uncle John Carney, ? which occurred Wednesday night about nine o'clock. He had been afflicted with something like nervous prostration for a long time, which baffled all medical aid. He was about 75 years of age and was one among the oldest citizens of Mountain Township. At one time he was a very prosperous county merchant. It was at this time that he found it necessary, to order to accommodate his lard trade, to establish a branch at Shell Knob where he sent his son Jack to take care of it. Jack and his wife were soon murdered for their money by a young man by the name of Moore, who had gained confidence in Uncle John and his family while servicing them as a farm hand. This, no doubt, was the saddest thing that ever happened to Uncle John as Jack was his favorite son. This certainly was the most cold-blooded murder that ever took place in this state. The bodies were not discovered for some time after the murder. They were found lying on the floor of the store, where they had been shot. Parties were sent out in all directions to find this guilty murderer. Moore wearing apparel, and some other things were identified. He was taken to Cassville and lodged in jail only to await the coming of the mob that had been organized, which marched into Cassville and quietly took him from the jail and hung him to the old court house bell post, where his lifeless body was left hanging for quite a while before it was cut down. Many weary travelers eyes were made to leap with joy when catching a glimpse of Uncle John's brilliant lamp and sparkling fire after a hard day's ride across the Carney mountain, while the cold snow storms were raging from valley to valley and mountain to mountain. Our mother had what could only be described as an adventurous life. She and our daddy moved from MO to CA and back again several times while raising us six kids. We are not saying that she never complained of her lot (after raising children of our own we know better!) but she stayed dedicated through the thick and thin of our family life. We recall traveling through the desert at night because of the extreme heat with no air conditioning (can you imagine driving 3000 miles with six kids in a sedan EVEN WITH air conditioning!?) Purdom, of near Cato of paralysis, age 78 years. He had been a resident of Barry County for a number of years. He is survived by a wife and seven children. Internment was made Sunday afternoon at the Carney Cemetery. - Son of John Bowen Hollingshead and Elizabeth Persinger. He married Eliza J. Hale on Nov. 8, 1866 in Franklin Co., KS. He was a Civil War Veteran, private, 9th Kansas Cav. He filed for his pension on Nov. 14, 1881 from Kansas. His wife, Eliza J., filed for his pension on Mar. 11, 1914 from MO. - Notes of Jean Ann at ancestry.com: SEARCHING FOR MY GREAT-GRANDPARENTS - My search began for my Great-grandparents almost 40 years ago, when my Mother gave me a old yellowed letter, still in the envelope addressed to my Grandma Flora Mae Hollingshead telling her about family, in the late 1940's or early 1950's. If gave John Christopher Hollingshead's birth about 1835 in Ohio with wife name Eliza Jane, and sisters and one brother Will Spencer. My Grandmother had died by the time I was given the letter, but Mother remembered another brother from an earlier marriage. When we moved to Owasso, Ok, 30 years ago, that tiny town had a Mormon Genealogy Library. Starting in the middle 1980's I began to spend many hours in their back room going through census, through marriage records, etc. There was also another Genealogy Library in Tulsa, OK., near us, that had books and records (I copied what seemed like a million facts about the family). Not only was I able to find John Christopher, but I began to find other members of the family, but in finding Eliza Jane--I continued to hit brick walls. In the late 1990's my husband and I went to Garnett, Kansas, their genealogy library was fantastic. Now only did I find books that told much about the Hollingsheads, but the whole story began to unfold. John Christopher Hollingshead was the 2nd son born to John Bowen and Elizabeth (Persinger) Hollingshead on 1 July 1835 in Sidney, Shelby County, Ohio. John Bowen and Elizabeth (Persinger) Hollingshead and their four youngest children Priscilla Ann, Margaret E., John C., and Richard S. left Miami, Logan County, Ohio, after 1850 and headed toward Fayette County Iowa. Their older son William Persinger Hollingshead and wife Isabelle Swallow, daughter of Levi Swallow, with their small children accompanied them. Sometime before 1855 John C. married Margaret Swallow, younger sister to Isabelle Swallow Hollingshead. Their first and only child Abram Boquilla Hollingshead was born about 1855 in Linn, Linn County, Iowa and his Mother died shortly thereafter in 1856. Almost immediately John C., and older brother William P. and Isabelle (Swallow) Hollingshead leave Iowa and head west to Kansas Territory. Both brothers are excellent blacksmiths. By about 1858 John C., has married again, a woman by the name of Amanda Cass, who dies in childbirth. In 1860 John C., and Abram B., are living with William P. and Isabelle Hollingshead and family in Centerville, Linn County, Kansas. The Civil War is beginning and Abram B. is left with his Aunt and Uncle, and John C., goes to fight for our country. He enters the war 18 Nov. 1863 in Leavenworth, Kansas, in company F. In the field, he is promoted to head blacksmith 16 Jan. 1865. When he is sent home, he almost immediately re-enlists, this time in DeVall's Bluff, Arkansas, his rank was FBS, in Company 2-C. Not long after the war is finally over, he meets his third wife, (my Great-grandmother) Eliza Jane Hale, daughter of Henry Hale. But it will be many years before I am able to find any information about Eliza Jane Hale. John C., and Eliza Jane Hale marry 8 Nov. 1866 in Franklin County, Kansas. A daughter Sarah is born about 1868 in Ottawa, Franklin County, Kansas and is listed in the 1870 census, but most likely died as a young child. In the 1880 census she is not listed. Then Margaret Belle, E. Julia, Flora Mae, (my Grandmother), William Spencer, Edna Ida, and Edith Viola were born in and around Garnett, Anderson County, Kansas. By the time John C. got out of the military, William P. had moved on to Garnett, Anderson, KS where he had started a saw mill and established his family there. The two men went into business and William P. stayed in Garnett. John C., now also a master craftsman, would take his family and go into different counties around the Garnett area and build a beautiful victorian home with wood and supplies from the Garnett homebase. After he sold a house or two, he and the family would again move to another area and repeat the same thing over and over. Many lovey victorian houses through out Anderson County, Kansas were built by John C., with wood and supplies coming from William P.'s business in Garnett. By 1910 John C. and Eliza Jane had moved to McDonald County, Mo. John C. died 22 Jan. 1914 and Eliza Jane died aft 1920 buried in the Carney Cemetery near Flat Creek, Barry County, Missouri. His death certificate reads that he was buried on Flat Creek and gives his date of death as Sept. 31, 1917 and his father as Thomas C. Hudson, and his mother was given as Elizabeth Perriman, both born in TN. - Genealogy of the John Brown "Grub" Hudson Family: John Brown Hudson, the oldest son of Elizabeth Perryman and Thomas Croucher Hudson. He married Minerva Carney on Jul 28, 1859. Seven children are known to have been born to this union: Thomas Calvin, Clarice Elizabeth, John David, Isaac Jacob, Tennessee, Samuel, and Mariah Ann. Samuel and Tennessee died while young children in Texas. At the start of the Civil War, John Brown Hudson enlisted in the AR Cavalry, served the entire war. He took part in many minor engagements and a few real battles. He was noted in his company as a joker, always careless about his equipment. Anything that would hold together was good enough for him and many times he had no bridle for his horse. At Fayetteville, AR 1862, his company was ordered to take the town from the Confederate force. As usual, when orders came, Hudson could not find his bridle, so he rigged up one by taking a cast of headstall - making a bit out of a piece of rope. He was ready when the command was given to "fall in". When they had come close to the town, a charge was ordered. The company went full speed into the town to find it occupied by a larger force than had been reported. The commanding officer ordered a halt but Hudson's horse had chewed his bit in two so he was running at full speed into the camp. Therefore, he was captured. When camp was pitched that night, he entertained his captors with funny stories and queer antics until there were convinced he was crazy so they gave him his freedom on the promise not to fight against them further. The promise held good until he made it back to his company. How he acquired the name Grub Hudson: Being a fiddler, he quite naturally took to all the dances held in the vicinity of the soldiers camp. It is reported that he, and others of his company, slipped away without permission to attend a neighborhood dance. As soon as their absence was noted, a non-commissioned officer was sent to look for them. The officer found them at a dance w/Hudson playing the fiddle. The officer secured the names of the others, who gave their correct names. Then he asked Hudson's name. As chance for a joke, Hudson gave the name of John Grub, another guy of the company, who was sleeping in the camp. As a result, Grub was called on the carpet, while Hudson went his way, tormenting others. After the war, he settled in Carroll County, AR, for a time before returning to Barry County, MO. He was residing on Carney Branch, when he lost his foot by catching it under a tree that he had felled. Being over a mile from home at the time, he amputated his own foot. - Cassville Democrat, October 13, 1917 - John Hudson of near Flat Creek, P. O., died Sept. 29, aged 79 years. The Crane Chronicle says he was a civil war veteran and served in the 1st Ark. Cavalry. He left a wife and five children. Rev. As a young man Thomas moved with the family from Kentucky between 1818 and 1822 and they settled on Crooked Creek near Georges Creek west of Yellville, Arkansas (along with sisters Lucinda, Nancy and Mary J.). The location would later become known as the Uncle Joe Burleson Place. His brother Jesse (b. 1803) would soon join the family and built a blacksmith shop. In 1836 when Arkansas was admitted to the Union, Thomas' father, John B. Hudson, was elected the first treasurer of Marion County and served as such until 1842. Thomas first married Betty Young with no known children born to the union. His second marriage to Elizabeth Perryman bore five children. John B. Hudson (Grub), Margaret (Peggie), Isaac Wilson, Thomas, and Allen William. Thomas cleared land, cultivated crops and lived in a cabin on what was later known as the Fate Davenport Place. He hunted the area along with friends John Tabor and Frank Hudson for bear and deer. In the 1850's Thomas moved to Barry County, Missouri where he is listed as being a wagon maker and creator of early pioneer products such as spinning wheels, etc. Thomas passed away on Jan. 20, 1903. On June 23, 1946, in Ormsby County, Nevada, she was united in marriage to Howard Huffhines, who preceded her in death on September 24, 1986. Also preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Jack and Joe Seitz and two sisters, Noma Carney and Nona (Judy) Swearingen. Ethel retired from the Department of Motor Vehicle in Sacramento, California.
