Research Note: He is buried in the Pharis plot. His mother was a Pharis. Son of Charles Ray and Jennie Pharis. His wife was Jewett LeCompte. She was the daughter of James William LeCompte and Mary Jane Ault. She married Charles Means Ray on June 19, 1912, died in 1974 and buried at Washburn Prairie Cemetery in the LeCompte plot. Bob Mitchell of Cassville, MO was the informant on the death certificate. - Nov. 7, 1903, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Means Ray and two little sisters, Bland and Catherine, visited their cousin, Mrs. Will Munday, and family of Galena, Kan., last and this week. - June 20, 1912, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Miss Jewette LeCompte and Mr. Means Ray were married Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. LeCompte. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. LeCompte. She is a graduate of the Cassville High School and of the Missouri State University. She is highly educated and cultured and her many graces fit her well for the new relations upon which she has entered. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ray and is a young man with ability and ambition. He is editor of the Cassville democrat and is gaining prominence in his profession. - April 17, 1913, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Means Ray, associate editor of the Cassville Democrat has resigned his appointment to the position as deputy Inspector of Petroleum Olis [Oil?] and has accepted the position as chief clerk of the state Insurance Department at Jefferson City. Salary $2,000 per annum. He assumed his duties this week. - Cassville Republican Oct. 9, 1919 - Mrs. Means Ray returned to Jefferson City Saturday following an extended visit with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. LeCompte. - Cassville Democrat, August 28, 1920 - Judge and Mrs. Fred Williams of Jefferson City spent Sunday night in this city as the guest of Mrs. Means Ray at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. LeCompte on their way to Roaring River Spring, where the Judge will take a much needed rest from the arduous duties on the Supreme Court bench. John Ray, born KY, and Elizabeth Means, born KY, were his parents. The cause of death was influenza complicated with heart problems. - September 1, 1906, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - A petty thief entered Chas. Ray's residence Saturday night, during the band concert, and took a quaintly of lard out of the kitchen. They entered the residence by the front door and went that way, while all the electric lights on the first floor were on. The street lights were on, making it very light. - October 23, 1913, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Chas. Ray and son, Means, of Jefferson City were in Neosho, Thursday. - Cassville Democrat, Sept. 11, 1920 - WASHBURN-GREASY: We are not short of news but can't see the point of the pencil. This will look as bad as Chas. Ray's marking. He is so bum that he has to use a machine, so the printers can read it. - Goodspeed's 1888 History: Charles Ray editor of the Cassville Democrat, and treasurer of Barry Co., MO, is a native of the county, born in 1856. He is a son of John and Elizabeth (Means) Ray. Charles was educated in the common schools, but at the age of thirteen he entered his father's printing office, in which he was practically educated in the art of printing. In 1880 he clerked in a hardware store, but the next year returned to his father's office, and at the death of the latter, he in connection with his sister, Belle Ray, became proprietor of the paper. In 1884 he was elected treasurer of the county, being re-elected in 1886. On March 23, 1882, he wedded Jennie B. Pharis, a daughter of D. P. Pharis, and a native of Cassville, born in 1868, by whom he is the father of two children, Bessie and Means. In politics Mr. Ray is a Democrat, and he is a member of the Masonic fraternity. John Means. - Died at Cassville, MO on October 26th 1885, Mrs. Elizabeth Ray, wife of Dr. John Ray, editor of the Cassville Democrat. Mrs. Ray was born near Tompkinsville, Monroe county, Ky., on Nov. 22nd 1824. She was the daughter of Capt. James Means and a sister of the late Dr. J. T. Means of Springfield, who stood at the head of the Medical Profession in Southwest Missouri. She was married to Dr. John Ray in 1850 and removed to Southwest Missouri in 1853. At the age of 18 years, she connected herself with the Christian church and has been a consistent and zealous member of the same through life. She was a lady of high order of intelligence and great force of character. She was always kind and charitable and with heart and hand she contributed to relief of the afflicted and distressed. She leaves many friends and will fondly cherish her memory. She was buried at the Cassville Cemetery. Research Note: Son of Joseph Ray and Addie (Sills) (Ray) Bostick. - No paper named, Jan. 1, 1910 - James Ray - ACCIDENTALLY SHOT BY OREN BRATTIN - Both Were Very Intimate Young Friends and Cousins - One of the saddest accidents that has occurred in this section, for years, occurred Thursday evening, Dec. 30, 1909, at about 5:30 p. m., near the residence of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Bostick, 3 1/2 miles southwest of Cassville, when James Ray aged 15 years, was accidentally killed by his cousin Oren Brattin, while rabbit hunting near the Bostick home. It seems the boys had gone to bait James' traps on the farm, and had taken a target gun along, that belonged to James Ray. In getting over a fence, James was the first over, and Oren carrying the gun was last; James had explained the workings of the gun to Oren, and had placed the gun on safety notch as he thought before giving it to Oren, and as Oren was climbing through the fence, he touched the trigger, and the gun was discharged, and the bullet entered about center of breast; James threw up his hands and hollowed Oh! Two or three times; he again said, Oh Lord save my soul, and told Oren to call the folks, which he did, and they walked about 75 feet before James gave down; Mr. Bostick heard Oren calling for help and went immediately and James barely breathed a time or two after he arrived where James laid, about 250 to 300 yard from the residence. Tender hands carried James' remains to his mother, who was shocked almost to death on the death of her son. James Ray was 15 years old, and was the son of the late Jos. Ray and Mrs. Addie Bostick and he was a very bright lad, and gave great promise of making a useful man and citizen. He was an own cousin of Editor of the DEMOCRAT, who held Jimmie in high estimation, because of his splendid traits of character. Had he lived he would have made his mark in the world. Oren Brattin is the oldest son of the Rev. J. T. Brattin of this city, who was visiting his cousin James, when the sad accident occurred. He is 14 years old, and is all broken to pieces, over the unfortunate occurrence. Thus two families start in the New Year, loaded with sorrow and sadness that time will have to erase. Rev. Charles Vanzandt conducted funeral services at Corinth Church, yesterday Dec. 31, 1909, at 1 p. m. after which the remains were conveyed to Cassville and laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery beside his father. He left his mother, Mrs. Wm. Bostick, one brother, Claud Ray at home and Mrs. Deila Munday of 916 Joplin St., to mourn their loved one's unfortunate death. - January 6, 1910, Thursday, Cassville Republican - James Ray Accidentally Shot: James Ray, the 15 year old son of Mrs. Addie Bostick was accidentally shot and almost instantly killed, late Thursday afternoon Dec. 30, 1909, near the residence of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Bostick southwest of Cassville 3 1/2 miles, by his little cousin, Oren Brattin, the fourteen year old son of Rev. and Mrs. J. T. Brattin of this city. Inscription: "Mother" - Research Note: Wife of Charles Ray. Her death certificate reads that she was a housewife and publisher - newspaper. Her father was D. P. Farris/Pharis, born TN, and her mother was Columbia Mason, born AR (buried at Oak Hill Cemetery). Uremia was the cause of death - cirrhosis of the liver. John Ray, Cassville, MO, was the informant. Her stone has 1867 on it for her birth year and her death certificate has 1868. Her name was Pharis and not Farris as this document reads. - Cassville Democrat, Oct. 4, 1945 - As a beautiful October day was fading into night a spirit as beautiful and as clean as the blue skies of heaven was taken from earth and returned to God who gave it, when Mrs. Charles Ray's beautiful and useful life came to an end peacefully at the Barry County Hospital Tuesday, October 2, 1945, at five o'clock. The passing came at a time when she seemed to be feeling better and was taking some interest in her surroundings, following a coma which had lasted since Saturday. Jennie Belle Pharis was born on January 21, 1868, at the home of her parents, the late Pat and Columbia Pharis, pioneer residents of Barry County. She was united in marriage to the late Charles Ray on Mar. 23 1882. Mr. Ray preceded her in death on February 25, 1926. The marriage was blessed by the birth of six children. They are: Mrs. C. M. Roberson, Neosho; Mrs. L. J. Mitchell, Springfield. Mrs. Missie Pearl, Mrs. Bland Hawk, Means Ray and John Ray of Cassville. In addition she leaves six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A devoted sister, Mrs. W. E. Thomas, of Kansas City survives. Two sisters and a brother preceded her in death. They are: Mrs. Helen G. Hobbs and Mrs. C. C. Martin and Blondvill Pharis. Mrs. Ray was a devout and consistent member of the Christian Church and until poor health overtook her, was active in the affairs of the church. She had been in poor health for 15 years but would not let this deter her from coming to the Democrat office to take part in the management of its affairs and counsel and guide those entrusted in managing its affairs. Her instructions were always to be fair, lenient and fearlessly honest in the paper's policy and business dealings. She lived with the motto: Malice toward none but charity for all. It was followed steadfastly with particular emphasis on charity. Her doing were her own secret to enjoy and revere as having done a duty well. Here every thought was for then underprivileged. The love for Barry County and people was but natural for it only followed the teachings of her parents and the thought of her late husband. She really and truly lived the spirit of her pioneer forbearers to hold friendship and loyalty a sacred trust. Mrs. Ray came from a family which was among the first to settle in Barry County and she lived in Cassville from the day she has born until she died. Her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Littleberry Mason settled in Missouri before it was admitted to statehood and almost half of Cassville is on land once owned by him or his father. On Missouri's admission to statehood, Mr. Mason was selected as the first representative of this district to the Missouri State Senate. Both lived and died here and are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery. In her passing "Grandma" and "Aunt Jennie", as she was called by so many, will be with us no more but she had left a heritage which is so rich in fond memories of a life lived so well it will inspire her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends to a greater and better life. That we should all have the power and strength to live as she would have us do is a thought uppermost in our minds. Funeral services will be held at the Koon Funeral Home at 2:00 o'clock Friday afternoon. Services will be in charge of the Rev. C. I. Kenny, pastor of the Christian Church with a short talk by an old friend, D. H. Kemp. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. - June 27, 1912, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Mrs. Charles Ray left Monday for Miami to visit her mother, Mrs. P. H. Pharis. - May 19, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Mrs. Chas. Ray has received a post card from Mrs. Mary M. Bayless of Claremore, Okla., who was in Chicago, Ill., on her way to New York City, accompanied y George Davis, where they spent Monday and Tuesday with her son Bourke. Her card read: "I am this far on my trip to see my boy; this is a great trip and oh, how I would enjoy it, if it was not for this cruel war, but it seems there is always a bitter with the sweet". Could be the son of Charles Ray and Jane Gillock and brother to Joseph Ray listed on this page. - Goodspeed's 1888 History - Dr. John Ray was of Scotch-Irish descent, and was born near Glasgow, Barren Co., KY in 1828. He was mainly self-educated, having attended the district schools only about ten months. He was reared on a farm, and after reaching maturity he entered the teacher's profession, and taught school for several terms. In the meantime he began the study of medicine, doing most of his reading at night. About 1852 he left the parental roof and removed to Barry County, MO, where, after a short time, he began practicing his profession. He soon removed to Pineville, and a few years later to Corsicana, continuing his practice, and also doing a flourishing mercantile business. About the time of the Civil War broke out,. he removed to Cassville, and was in charge of the United States' Army Hospital for a time. In June, 1962, he was appointed circuit and county clerk of Barry Co., serving until Dec. 1964. In 1872 he purchased the Cassville Democrat, which he conducted very ably until the time of his death in Jan. 1888. During the Rebellion Dr. espoused the cause of the Union, but he was a tried and true Democrat, being one of eighteen men who voted for George B. McClellan for president, in 1864. In 1875 he was chosen by the people of his senatorial district to represent them in the constitutional convention, and after his death, E. H. Norton, member of the supreme bench of the State of MO, wrote: "I knew him well and was intimately associated with him in the constitutional convention of 1875, and can say that a truer and nobler man never lived.......The State has lost one of its best citizens, and society one of its most useful members." Many other testimonials, equally as good. were written of him by eminent men of the State. Dr. Ray was a man of strong intellectual endowments, who did his own thinking, and after giving his subject mature deliberation, acted accordingly. He was charitable in all his acts, having adopted and lived by the motto "With malice toward none and with charity to all." Being a thorough business man, and strictly honest and upright in all his dealings, he held the fullest confidence of his many friends until the day of his death. About 1848 he married Elizabeth Means, a native of Monroe Co., KY, who was born in 1824, and died in 1885. She was the daughter of Capt. John Means, and was the mother of five children, to of whom are living, Charles and Belle. - Journal - Missouri Constitutional Convention of 1875 - Volume 1, Page 100-101 - John Ray (Democrat) was born near Glasgow, Barren Co., Kentucky, Jan. 19, 1828. His education was mainly self-acquired, having attended the district schools for only a few months. He taught school for several terms, studying medicine at night. In 1851 or 1852 he located in Barry Co., Missouri, where he began the practice of medicine. He soon removed to Pineville and later to Corsicana. In addition to his practice he conducted a mercantile establishment. About the time of the Civil War, he located at Cassville. He was an elector on the Bell-Everett ticket in 1860. During the war he served as county recorder, county clerk and circuit clerk. For a time he was in charge of a United States hospital at Cassville. In 1872 he purchased the Cassville Democrat which he edited until his death, Jan. 3, 1888. About 1850 he married Miss Elizabeth Means, a native of Monroe Co., KY. In 1954, a stone was delivered to the grave of John P. Ray. On the stone was also engraved Mary E. Mary saw it set and signed for it in April. - April 10, 1913, Thursday, Cassville Republican - John Ray and Miss Mary Mitchell, both of Cassville were married at the home of the bride, Sunday morning at the hour of nine. Rev. Yarbrough, pastor of the Christian Church of this city solemnized the ceremony which made the happy couple man and wife. The wedding was a quiet affair, only relatives and a few close friends of the family were present. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Mitchell and is a young lady of many accomplishments and culture. She is popular with her associates and her friends are numbered by her acquaintances. The groom is a young man with an ambition to make a success and is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ray. For some time he was a traveling salesman for the Hagen Paper Co. at St. Louis but is now associated with the Cassville Democrat. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Bill Reed, one sister, Annabelle Bass, two brothers-in-law, Everett Wheeler and Gene Bass. He attended the University of Missouri Law School in Columbia and graduated in 1936. He was a State Legislator for two years (1939-1940). During World War II Clarence was in the United States Coast Guard. He worked as an attorney for the Veterans Administration for thirty years following his discharge. Reed Dies Suddenly: We are born to die and there is no life without death, and a return to mother earth from whence we came, but the spirit of man is waited to eternal and happy life, as a reward as he has lived and produced fruits that ye may know what he has propagated and cultivated in his lease of life, while living as a tenant in this world of sorrow and sadness. John Anderson Reed was born Feb. 11, 1857, near Lexington, Ky., and was a son of late Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Reed former well known citizens of near this city. He came with his parents to Barry County when a young man and has lived in this vicinity since. In 1884, he and Miss Rosatha Twillinigear were married and three daughters and three sons were born of this marriage, two daughters and two sons survive the father, those living are Mrs. Lillian Bozarth, Mrs. Mayme Tedford and Hunter Reed of Tulsa, Okla., and Clearance Reed of the U. S. Navy. The wife and mother died April 9, 1919. John A. Reed died of apoplexy, at Owl Drug Store, where he had gone for treatment, about 6:30 p.m., March 19, age 63 years, 1 month, 9 days. He left three brothers George and James of near Purdy, and Joseph of Butterfield, and four sisters. He had been a member of the Christian Church for many years. The remains were cared for by the Horine Undertaking Co., and later conveyed to the home of his nephew Burl Reed on North Main Street. At 3:00 p.m., March 20, Rev. J. T. Brattin conducted funeral services at the Reed home, after which the remains were interred in Oak Hill Cemetery. On December 29, 1938, in Monett, Missouri, she was united in marriage to Clarence E. Reed, who preceded her in death on May 20, 2006. Also preceding her in death were her parents and one brother, Bill Carney. Kathleen received her education at Sparks Elementary School and was a 1936 graduate of Cassville High School. At the age of sixteen, Kathleen entered Henrotin Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago. She attended University classes there for two years. In 1938, she met her husband, Clarence Reed and they were married that year. After their marriage they moved to Jefferson City, Missouri, where Clarence was a State Representative for two years. During the years of Clarence's employment as an attorney, they lived in eleven states and traveled in most of the United States. C. 2nd Ark., Cav. and served through the Civil War. - Cassville Democrat, Nov. 1965 - The last to go has already appeared in county papers, on Monday, November 22 at 8 p.m. an old lady passed away in the Barry County Hospital. I am speaking of Aunt Tint, or Martha Elizabeth Reed, her real name. Had she lived to December 5th her age would have been 99 1/2. That's a long time isn't it? She was the last of two families of Baylesses who came to this county a few years after the Civil War, that is, one generation of them, there are several of both families still living around Cassville, Butterfield and Oklahoma, among them Paulina Hankins, of our family, who is in the 90's. The two families were cousins. One couldn't help but note Aunt Tint died on the anniversary date of John F. Kennedy's assassination. One had lived her full lifetime rich in fulfillment, the other cut down at the height of his career, young in age. Mrs. G. G. (Bud) Bayless was buried in Carterville, MO, the same day Aunt Tint died. She was 85 years of age. Uncle Bud was our uncle. The two families of Baylesses never claimed much relationship but they were definitely from the same family tree, originating from Wales and Ireland. Aunt Tint was born in the Antioch community just north of Cassville, not Berryville, Arkansas. Mary Paulina Bayless Messer was the only one of the seven children to be born in Arkansas. The others were Barry Countians. Needless to say, Aunt Tint outlived all her brothers and sisters and all her children. Her long life may be attributed to right thinking, a fine philosophy of life, for she always made the best of every bad situation. Reed who for the past forty-five years has lived in the locality about three miles northwest of Cassville, died at his home Friday, Dec. 17, of tuberculosis, following an illness of about two years. Mr. Reed was born in Pulaski County, Kentucky, March 30, 1854, being 61 years, 8 months and 18 days old. The family moved to Missouri and located in Barry County in what is now known as the Reed neighborhood northwest of Cassville in 1869. They located on a farm joining the place which Mr. Reed had owned and lived on since 1878. In 1878 he was married to Miss Sarah Stenson. To them three children, all of who are living, were born. They are Mrs. Anna Hawk of Monett; William Reed, Jr. of near Cassville; and Mrs. Edith England, wife of Chas. England, of near Exeter. He was a brother of John Reed of this county, George of Corsicana and James of California. He also has two living sisters and two half sisters. William Reed was a good citizen. A man who was well thought of by everybody who knew him. He loved his home and and always stayed close to his farm. For sometime he had suffered from lung trouble but bore his suffering manfully. The funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. W. F. Goodnight of Purdy. Also preceding her in death were her parents, John and Mary; one brother, John Jr. and two sisters, Marjorie and Willa Dean. During her younger years Ruby lived on the homestead farm near Eagle Rock and later moved to a farm north of Washburn, where they could go to school. After graduating high school at Washburn with top honors, WW II was under way so she moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to work in an Airplane Factory, then moved to Cassville where she worked as a book keeper at Bill Hailey Ford Dealership. In 1958 she moved to Springdale, Arkansas and was a homemaker and later worked for 20 years as a secretary of National Grape Co-op until she retired. In 1963 she won the title of Arkansas Poultry Federation Cooking Queen. In 1982 she moved back to Cassville and retired but was a volunteer at the Museum and Chamber of Commerce. She was married to Guy Reese in Kansas City, MO, on February 17th, 1915 to which union two daughters were born. - Cassville Democrat, April 26, 1929 - Mrs. Winnifred (Devine) Reese, wife of Guy Reese formerly of this city but now of LaRussell, MO, passed away in the Baptist Hospital in Springfield last Wednesday following an illness of complications of ailments, extending over the past few weeks. Mrs. Reese became ill at about the time the family was preparing to move to their new home at LaRussell, where her esteemed husband had purchased a general mercantile business. She was soon taken to the hospital, where her condition was pronounced serious. An operation was performed upon her a short time thereafter at which time it was found that nothing could be done for her at that time. Developments were awaited, but in vain. Her condition took a turn for the worst and recovery was inevitable. The Horine Funeral Service ambulance went to Springfield after the body, which was brought to this city and prepared for burial. Mrs. Reese was a daughter of John Devine, an old time and highly respected citizen of Lamar, MO. and was an excellent wife, mother, sister, friend and neighbor. She had resided many years in this city and was loved by all acquaintances. She was a consistent member of the Baptist Church and had been for several years and her everyday life was that of a conscientious Christian lady. She was married to Guy Reese in Kansas City, MO, February 17th, 1915 to which union two daughters were born, who with the grief-strength father survive. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. L. H. Horton of this city and another who resides in Colorado, and who attended the funeral services being delayed one hour awaiting her arrival on an afternoon train. She also leaves her father and two brothers who also reside in Colorado, but were unable to attend the funeral. Impressive funeral services were conducted at the Baptist Church in Cassville, Friday afternoon by Rev. Kelly, after which interment was made in Oak Hill cemetery, under the direction of Horine's Funeral Service. A quartet composed of Mrs. Glen Pearl, Mrs. John Ray, Clint Blythe and Chas. Willis, rendered special songs at the service. Many beautiful floral emblems were received from relatives and many friends of the family through out this section. John and Susan were blessed with three children. John grew up in Kansas, Indiana, Texas, and Missouri. His family ultimately settled in Cassville. John graduated from Cassville High School in 1972, where he played football for the Wildcats and was the editor-in-chief of the school newspaper. He attended Southwest Missouri State University, University of Missouri, and the University of Texas. He received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 1979. Research Note: He was the third child of Don Van Reid and Mabel Mae (Sharum) Reid. On December 28, 1952, Johnny married Octava Marie Tittle and to this union came four children, eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Johnny walked closely with his Lord and Savior, preaching the word of God as an evangelist beginning at the young age of 11. He later became ordained as a minister in the Pentecostal Holiness Church, serving as pastor of the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Mesquite, Texas. Johnny, Marie and family moved from Texas to Cassville in 1967, where they owned and operated Reid Hardware. Johnny later built homes and investment properties and served as a realtor. Johnny served his community as a Cassville R-4 District school board member and President of the Cassville Athletic Booster Club. Johnny and Marie subsequently returned to Texas in the 1980's, where they lived before returning home to Cassville to retire. Research Note: She was the daughter of Ezra and Edlee Tittle, the oldest of their five daughters. In early 1952, she was a youth leader in her church when she met Johnny O. Reid, a traveling evangelist preaching at her church's revival. It was "love at first sight". Johnny and Marie lived in several places in Kansas and Texas before settling their family into Cassville, Missouri in 1968. They opened "Reid Hardware" on the square in Cassville, and Marie later opened the "Dippity Dip" ice cream parlor across from the school and "Cook Paints" downtown on the square. Johnny and Marie were engrained in Cassville's community through their businesses, their church, and the friends and activities of their four children who all graduated from CHS. They corresponded through mail for several months and then, after only seeing each other during that revival, they were married in December of 1952…he was seventeen and she was sixteen. When Johnny passed away in 2012, they had been married 59 years. She was a leader in several bible study groups over the years and a fountain of sage advice and wisdom based in biblical truths. She was a great seamstress and for several years Marie made and donated dozens of beautiful Easter dresses for young girls in need in the area. Reynolds, born VA, and his mother's name was unknown to the informant. (His mother was Martha Shawver.) He was a retired miller and Letitia Reynolds was his deceased spouse's name. The cause of his death was hypertrophy prostrate, acute uremia. Mrs. Lela Parrish, St. Louis, MO, was the informant. According to the newspapers he was a Justice of the Peace and a Deputy Sheriff. - Cassville Democrat, March 8, 1934 - Funeral services for S. R. Reynolds, old time Cassville citizen who passed away at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Maud VanHook in Billings, last Wednesday were held at the Presbyterian church in Cassville, his old home, Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. McKinzie of Carthage. Interment was made in the Oak Hill cemetery beside his wife who preceded him in death in July 1921. A quartet composed of Mrs. John Ray, Mrs. Glen Pearl, Clinton Blythe and Chas. Wills furnished music at the services accompanied by Mrs. B. D. Wilks at the piano, and Dave Stump on violin. Mrs. Ray also sang a solo by request of the bereaved family. Many beautiful floral emblems were received from friends near and afar. This well known Barry County citizen was born March 4, 1850 in Fayette County, West Virginia. In the year 1850 he came by boat on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to near Batesville, Ark, on White River. Soon after the close of the Civil War in 1863, he came to Lawrence County, where he married Letitia Gibson, Dec. 31, 1874. In the year of 1880, he moved to Mineral Springs, Mo., and from there to Cassville in 1882. Two children were born to the marriage, Mrs. Lela Parrish and Roy D. Reynolds, both of St. Louis, and two grandchildren, Mrs. Maud VanHook of Billings, Mo., and Deck Reynolds, of New York. Short funeral services were also held at Billings, Friday morning at which time, schools of that place were dismissed. A quartet furnished music. The good people of Billings were exceedingly kind during the sad hours which came to this home in their city and rendered every service possible to comfort the family. Mr. Reynolds were a consistent member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge and has held practically every office of the order. He had a large acquaintance throughout his county and enjoyed many friends. For many years, he was connected with the mill here. He was also a member of the Presbyterian church and lived the Christian life. He moved with his granddaughter, Mrs. VanHook, to Billings, a few years ago, where she was employed to teach music in the schools at that place. A large number attended the services here. The many friends of the bereaved family join the Democrat in extending sympathy in their sad hour. - Aug. 12, 1897, Cassville Republican - Mrs. M. E. Newman was called to Sarcoxie, Saturday and S. R. Reynolds Sunday, to the bedside of John Foster, who is dangerously ill. - April 6, 1911, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Sheridan Lane of Purdy has bought the interest of H. B. Folies in the Purdy mill. Mr. Folies has moved to Clinton, Iowa. Mr. Lane has taken charge of the mill. S. R. Reynolds of this city has an interest in the mill. - November 30, 1916, Thursday, Cassville Republican - S. R. Reynolds went to Anderson, McDonald county, Tuesday after a little eight year old girl, the niece of Ann Harris of this city. The little girl's father died about three years ago; her mother married again and died a few weeks ago leaving the little girl without a home and Mrs. Reynolds went after her that she might make her home with her aunts in this city. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, January 16, 1919 - S. R. Reynolds received word Saturday that his brother, George Reynolds, had died that morning at Sapulpa, Okla., where he lived. Mr. Reynolds went to Sapulpa to attend the funeral and returned home Tuesday. His brother was a wealthy merchant and owner of oil properties. He was 81 years old and had been in excellent health. He had walked down to the store the morning he died, falling over dead shortly after arriving at the store. SSW: Evelyn - Research Note: He was the son of Charles Wesley and Ola Audra (Moore) Riddle. On August 1, 1950, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Dryer. Verdayne grew up and received his education at Cassville, graduating from Cassville High School with the Class of 1944. He attended Southwest Baptist University, Oklahoma Baptist University and the University of Tulsa, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from the latter institution in 1952. Verdayne was a World War II Veteran, serving his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps with distinction and achieving the rank of Sergeant. He participated in the Asia Pacific Theater during the War. Verdayne was a high school teacher, teaching mathematics at Cassville, Purdy and Southwest (Washburn) High Schools in the 1960s and serving as the head basketball coach at Southwest High School. Verdayne was a long-time businessman in Cassville. During the 1950s and 1960s, he was a homebuilder, constructing twenty-eight homes in Cassville. In 1959, Verdayne and Evelyn purchased the shoe and dry goods businesses of their parents and operated the Riddle's Department Store on the Cassville square until their retirement. He served his church and community in leadership positions. Robberson of Cassville, MO was the informant on the death certificate. In 1961, Cassville Monument Co. placed a stone at her grave that was bought by the estate of W. E. Robberson (her husband), Charles D. Thomas, Adm. signed for it. Willie E. was also engraved on the stone. - Obit: Mary Rebecca Brown, daughter of the late W. D. and Alice (Bayless) Brown was born September 12, 1897, in Cassville and departed this life September 26, 1960 in Cassville at the age of 63 years and 17 days. She attended the Cassville schools, was graduated from the Cassville high school and attended Southwest Missouri State Teachers College in Springfield. She taught in the Barry county rural schools, the Cassville schools and the rural schools of Greene county a number of years before her retirement. On June 5, 1938 she was married to W. E. Robberson of Pierce City. They made their home in Pierce City until 1955 when they moved to a farm north of Cassville in the Merl's Chapel community. She was an active member of the Cassville Seventh Day Adventist church, having served as ____ and in other capacities. Her survivors are her husband, Bill, one sister, Mrs. Leo Robberson; one brother, Kenneth Brown, both of Cassville, and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers. Mary Robberson was a loving and devoted Christian wife and sister and will be missed not only by her family, but by all who knew her. Funeral services were conducted at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon, October 1, in the Williamson Chapel in the Valley with Elder Norman Sharp, pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist church, officiating. Robberson of Titusville, Fla., were held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Williamson chapel. The Rev. Calvin Henderson officiated and burial was in Oak Hill cemetery. Born December 24, 1889, in Barry county, he had lived most of his life in Pierce City and Cassville community. For more than 20 years he was a horse and mule buyer for Owens brothers in Pierce City. He retired in 1955, and returned to the Cassville area. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. His wife, Mrs. Mary (Brown) Robberson passed away four months ago. Surviving are two other brothers, F. G. Robberson of Mammouth, Ill., and Leo Robberson of Cassville, and two sisters, Mrs. Jim Jefferson of Monett and Mrs. Amy McNabb of Cassville. - Aug. 22, 1918, Cassville Republican - Mrs. J. B. Research Note: Alford E. W. Benton Robbins (went by Benton), born May 26, 1863, and died May 21, 1921, a son of John Harvey Robbins and Achsah Hobson. Married Irine Manley, May 1, 1890. - Obit: - Following an illness of four months or more, about 100 days of which he had not been able to lie down, Benton Robbins passed away at his home in this city, Saturday morning, May 21, of leakage of the heart and a complication of troubles, at the age of 58 years lacking one week to a day. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Baptist church. Cassville Lodge I.O.O.F. No. 238, gave their funeral service at the grave. Members of this order and the M. W. A. and W. O. W. Camps were in the procession. Services at the church were conducted by Rev. T. J. Deakins. The floral offerings were very beautiful and profuse. For the past three of four months Mr. Robbins had been confined to his home nearly all the time. One week before his death he began to fail rapidly and his physicians announced that death was near. Benton Robbins was born May 28, 1863 at Wheeling, Marion County, Iowa. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Robbins who came to this county from Iowa in 1868 and located south of Cassville in the Pasley neighborhood. He grew to manhood in this community. He was educated in the Cassville School under the late Prof. N. L. Maiden. In 1887 he established himself in business in Cassville by opening the Central Barber shop which he still owned at his death and owned for the 34 years. A number of years ago he in company with the late Harry Horine and son, E. K. Horine, bought the Cassville Produce and Seed Co. and were engaged in the produce and seed business until less than one year ago when they sold the business to the Farmers Exchange. May 1, 1890 he was married to Miss Irene Manley and to them two children were born, one of whom, Miss Nadine, and wife survive him. In 1895 he was elected Mayor of Cassville and had served several terms since that time. Having lived in the county practically all of his life, having been in business here for the past 34 years and having been active in public affairs, he had a wide acquaintance all over the county. The large crowd in attendance at his funeral showed the high esteem in which he was held by a host of friends over the county. Mr. Robbins was a charter member of the M. W. A. and the Royal Neighbor Camps here. He was also a member of the W. O. W. He had been a member of Cassville Lodge I.O.O.F. No. 238 for twenty-four years. He leaves two brothers; J. A. Robbins of Verona and M. H. Robbins of Cassville and three sisters; Mrs. I. G. Gaskins of Exeter, Mrs. Joe White of Cassville and Mrs. Mary E. Grimes of Webb City. The pall bearers were; F. N. and D. G. Reese, R. E. L. Bass, Tom Poplin, Claud Hesseo and C.C. Chandler. - July 11, 1908, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Dr. W. C. Guild, a dentist of Marionville, has been making and passing counterfeit money and was arrested at Neosho last week, and a lot of the spurious money was found on his person. Benton Robbins took $25 to the First National Bank, Thursday morning, to deposit $20 and wanted $5 in change, when Cashier Charlesworth, informed him that one of the $5 was a counterfeit. Mr. Robbins took the bill back to the party who passed it on him. The cause of her death was that her clothing accidentally caught on fire and she was burned over most of her body. Her stone has Bonsolene as her name - death certificate has a different spelling - Bonsolinn. - Cassville Republican Nov. 11, 1915 - Bonsolene Roberts Fatally Burned - Clothing Catches Fire While Cooking Supper Friday Evening - Lives Until 4 O'clock, Sunday Morning: Miss Bonsolene Roberts, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Roberts, was fatally burned Friday evening at their home one mile south of Cassville while cooking supper and died Sunday morning at 4 o'clock, Nov. 7. The sad accident occurred at about 4:30 o'clock Friday evening. Mrs. Roberts was milking while Bonsolene and her younger sister were preparing supper. While at work over the cook stove Bonsoline raised a cap about something and the flames caught her clothing on fire. She became alarmed and ran about the house and finally ran into the yard and toward the barn lot where her mother was. Her younger sister poured water over her and prevented the flames from burning her about the head and face. Her clothing was literally burned from her body. Her left side, chest and arms being burned worst. The news of the horrible accident reached town at once and physicians and a number of friends hastened to the home and did all in their power to relive her suffering. From that moment until she passed away she had every attention which loving hands could bestow. Her body had been burned so deeply that nothing could be done to save her life. She bore the intense suffering nobly until she peacefully passed away. The funeral was held at the home Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, conducted by Rev. L. R. Lamb. Young lady schoolmates were honorary pallbearers. The pallbearers were selected from the W. O. W. Lodge of which Mr. Roberts is a member. Bonsolene Roberts was born in Cassville, Sept. 16, 1899, was 16 years, 1 month, and 22 days old. Most of her life had been spent in Cassville. She had always been a faithful pupil in school and also at Sunday School. She was a member of the Sophomore class in Cassville High School and a member of the Baptist Church and Sunday school. Her untimely and sad death has brought deep grief to her many friends and associates in this city. The large crowd in attendance at her funeral was the strongest evidence of the high esteem in which she was held. Roberts, who recently moved into this section, locating in the Oak Ridge settlement on the Batten farm, which he purchased, passed away at his home last Wednesday, following an illness of short duration. Death was due to heart ailment. He was 52 years and 19 days old. At the early stage in life, Mr. Roberts professed faith in Christ and at the age of 21 years, was married to Miss (Mary Elizabeth) Harvey, to which union one child a daughter was born. The deceased was born in Watersville, Maine. In the year 1903 he again married to Sarah Kennedy, and five children were born to this marriage, four girls and one son. Funeral services were held at the family home after which the remains were laid to rest in the Oak Hill cemetery at Cassville. He was a Navy Veteran of WW II, and served as Yeoman on an escort ship in the Pacific. He married Opal Hendricks in June of 1940. Together they raised two daughters. Opal preceded him in death. He then married Jean Steinberger in 1993. She also preceded him in death. His first job was at the Red Front Grocery in Cassville, which led to a career in the grocery business with Kraft Foods, and for a period of 18 years, he was in charge of all sales for the city of Chicago, IL. He earned a variety of "merit" awards with the company. His wife was Minerva Box. - Cassville Democrat, Feb. 1, 1929 - Z. L. Roberts of Monett, commonly known among his many friends as "Uncle Zep" died at his home in that city Tuesday evening at eleven o'clock, following an illness extending over the past few weeks. He has been in declining health for the past year but death is said to have been caused by pneumonia. Uncle Zep, as the writer has known him all his life was born in Tennessee, Feb. 17th, 1850. When a young man, he came to Missouri, first locating in Springfield. After living in that city a short time, he moved to near Cassville and resided on what is known as the Welsher farm, where J. C. Hill now lives. His father homesteaded this farm many years ago. About 50 years ago, he was married to Miss Minerva Box, an excellent lady who resided near Cassville. Nine children were born to this marriage, eight of which survive. One son Claud, died a few years ago, when the family resided near Wentworth, MO. The children are: Mrs. Lizzie Mitts, and Mrs. Linnie Oxford of Neosho, Mrs. Mary Kawthorn and Hubert of Monett, Mrs. Ona Sanders, Hugo, Okla., and Ernest and Dewey of Joplin, and Ed of Cassville. Uncle Zep lived in Cassville many years, and operated a livery stable which was located on the northwest corner of the square on the lot now occupied by the Ford Agency. All of his children were born and raised in Cassville. He was a member of the Antioch Baptist church, having been converted at an early stage in life. In addition to his splendid wife and eight children, he leaves one brother, James of Springfield. He also leaves between 35 and 40 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren to mourn his pasting. Impressive funeral services were conducted at the Methodist-Protestant church in Monett, Thursday afternoon by Rev. Erickson, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Oak Hill cemetery at Cassville, under the direction of the Butterfield Funeral Service of Monett. This splendid man was well and favorably known throughout this section. He was an honorable citizen and kind and loving husband and father. His dealings have been such during his 50 years he was regarded as a man among men and strictly honest. To his grief stricken wife and other members of his family, the Democrat joins their many friends in extending sympathy in their sad hour of bereavement. Research Note: Cassville Republican, Thursday, Cassville, MO, Mar. 16, 1893 - G. W. Robinson was born Dec 8, 1861 in Miami Co., AR, and died in Barry Co., MO, Jan 22, 1898. He was united in marriage to Laura Wright of Carroll Co., AR, in 1884 and moved to Cassville, MO in 1890 where he entered school and worked faithfully to prepare for life's work. He was teaching this school term of school at Oklahoma, five miles west of Exeter, when the band of affliction was laid upon him. He suffered much but the grace of God was sufficient. During the illness, he said, "My way is clear", and when unable to speak he looked at his loved ones and expressed good by and closed his eyes in death. He was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. His funeral was presented in Cassville by Rev. Sellers. His body was placed in the Cassville Cemetery to await the Resurrection. Robinson, 80 years old, who died Thursday morning at his home near Cassville, were held Sunday afternoon in the Culver Chapel. The Rev. Ab Edie and the Rev. Hugh Higgs officiated. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery. A long time resident of Cassville, Mr. Robinson came here with his parents from Tennessee when a small boy. He was a member of the Bible Baptist Church of Cassville. Research Note: He was the youngest child of George Greenberry and Lelia (Baker) Roden. In addition to his parents, preceding him in death were his brothers, Lester, Ralph and Herschel and two sisters, Ruth Hayward and Irene Roller. Shortly after graduating from Purdy High School in 1943, Bob was inducted into the Army. He was a veteran of World War II and saw action in the Philippines. He was wounded during the retaking of Corregidor, receiving the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. His wife was Leota Thompson. To this union five children were born. Bob worked for 13 years as the Bookmobile Driver/Clerk for the Barry County Library and was still recognized late in life by the former students of many small rural schools as "Bob the Bookmobile Man". Ruddick died at his home northwest of Cassville, Thursday afternoon, March 21, 1918, following a lingering illness of more than two years of lung trouble, aged 60 years. The funeral was held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home and interment made in Oak Hill cemetery in this city. The services were conducted by Rev. J. W. Ennes. James Franklin Ruddick was born June 10, 1858 in Benton County, Ark. He grew to manhood in that county. From there he came to Barry county and located near Seligman where he married Miss Nancy Arnhart. To them three children were born: Mrs. Walter Hisaw of Pierce City, Arthur Ruddick of Cherryvale, Kan., and Walter Ruddick of near Cassville. A few years after the death of Mrs. Ruddick he united in marriage with Miss Martha Wallace of near Seligman. To them two children were born: Mrs. Horace Gray of Monett and O. W. Ruddick now in the U.S. Army. He was a brother of Stephen Ruddick of near Aurora. He was a man of strict integrity, of a high sense of honor and always took an active interest in advancing the welfare of the community in which he lived. Ruddick northwest of Cassville, died Monday afternoon, Sept. 22, 1919, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Maggie Gray of Monett. She had been ill for several weeks of a complication of troubles and in failing health for more than a year. The funeral services were held at the home of her daughter in Monett Tuesday and her body brought to Oak Hill Cemetery at Cassville for burial beside the body of her husband. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Francis Goodnight of Purdy assisted by the Callaway Undertaking Co. Mrs. Ruddick was a daughter of the late James Wallace who came to the south part of this county from Lee County, Virginia in 1853. She was born in Lee County, Virginia May 8, 1846. She was married to James Ruddick in 1885. To them two children, one daughter, Mrs. Maggie Gray, and one son, Winfred of Detroit, Mich., were born. Mr. Ruddick died in March 1918. She was a good mother, friend and neighbor and had numerous friends over the county who will be grieved to know of her passing.
