He had been afflicted with paralysis since Aug 1, 1903, and had been an invalid since that time. He was a member of the M. E. Church and served 3 years in the Union Army during the civil war. Research Note: According to his death certificate his father was named Fred Pearl, born Michigan, and his mother's maiden name was Hamilton, born in KS. The cause of his death was listed as a brain tumor and he worked for the State Highway Dept. of MO. His wife was listed as Missie Pearl. From the online newspapers, we know that in 1913 Glenn Pearl and Will Robberson opened up a livery business in the red barn back of the Barry County Bank building. - Cassville Republican, June 4, 1936 - Glenn Pearl of this city passed away Tuesday afternoon, June 2nd at the Barnes Hospital in St. Louis where he had been for more than a week. He was operated on soon after being taken to the hospital for a blood clot of the brain. The report received here Monday from the hospital indicated that Mr. Pearl was in a dangerous condition. A message came Tuesday afternoon stating that he was passed away at 3:30 o'clock that afternoon. Two weeks ago he was stricken while in Jefferson City on business in connection with the Highway Commission. Two days later he was brought to Cassville and remained for several days before going to St. Louis for the operation. His body was brought to Cassville in the W. D. Koon ambulance, arriving here Wednesday morning about 7:30 o'clock. Mr. Pearl was about fifty years old. He was born at Yates Center, Kan. More than twenty-five years ago he located in Cassville, and a few years later he was united in marriage with Miss Missie Ray, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Ray of this city. To them were born five children, three daughters and two sons: one of the sons died in infancy. The living children are Mrs. Virginia Turner, Miss Rayma, Chas. and Kathryn. For a number of years he was engaged in the real estate business here. Later he engaged in business for a year or more at Seminole, Okla. About three years ago he was appointed to a position in the right-of-way division of the district highway engineer's office at Joplin and was in that work when he was stricken ill. Mr. Pearl was a man of genial disposition and known generally among his friends as a man who always looked upon the bright side of life. His sudden illness and untimely death is a sad blow to his family and friends. Funeral services will be held at the home of Mrs. Charles Ray on Friday afternoon. Yarbrough of the Christian Church. The bride was beautifully attired in a brown traveling suit and the groom wore a brown novelty blue. Pharis is the oldest resident of Cassville counting years of residence. She is a daughter of Littleberry Mason, deceased, who moved from Madison Co., Ark., where Mrs. Pharis was born, in 1834 or the early part of 1835. - October 10, 1912, Thursday, Cassville Republican - A Pioneer Citizen Dead: Mrs. C. C. Pharis, one of Barry County's most highly respected and pioneer citizens, died Wednesday about 1:30 p.m. at her home in Cassville. Her death was due to a cancerous growth from which she had been suffering many months. Mrs. Pharis was born in Washington County, Arkansas, November 1, 1832 and came to Barry County in 1835 with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Littleberry Mason, who settled one mile south of Cassville, where she was reared to womanhood. She was first married to Thomas McDowell, who died at St. Louis, during the Civil War. In about 1868, she was married to D. P. Pharis to whom were born three children, one deceased and Mrs. Jennie Ray and Mrs. Kate Griffith both of Cassville. The death of Mrs. Pharis removed from our midst a most devoted mother and friend and during her long illness she was always happy and hopeful. She had been a member of the Christian Church for nearly sixty years and had always lived a consistent Christian life. She knew God as her father and Jesus, as her personal friend and Savior. Research Note: When Keziah died, he married Columbia C. McDowell. - Cassville Democrat Oct. 10, 1908, Saturday - D. P. Pharis has Passed to his Reward: On Oct. 11, 1908, Dr. Pharis went to sleep. He was born in Meigs Co., Tennessee, Jan. 26, 1830. He left his home in Tennessee about 1843, when 14 years old and went to Ft. Smith, Arkansas and from there he came to this county. In 1855 he married Miss Kiziah A. Burton, daughter of the late John B. Burton and they had four children. John and Mary, deceased, and Mrs. Helen C. Hobbs, of this city and Mrs. Missie K. Martin of Kansas City. On Jan. 27, 1862, Mrs. Pharis died and left her husband and two children. And then after the war, he and Mrs. Columbia C. McDowell, a daughter of the late Senator Littleberry Mason, married and had three children. Mrs. Jennie H. Ray of Cassville, Mrs. Kate Griffith of Alva, Okla., and Blondvill, and a son who died in infancy. - Same Paper - (First name omitted) Pharis and Hunter Martin came in from Kansas City, Tuesday noon to attend their grandfather's funeral, the late D. P. Pharis. They left for Claremore, Okla., Tuesday. - Donna's Note: He is buried near Hallie Kiziah Hobbs. His stone has that he was born on Jan. 27, 1830. - Goodspeed's 1888 History: Capt. William Ray's company of State militia was organized at Cassville in 1862 with Amos N. Kelly, first, and D. P. Pharis second lieutenant. Crout's carding mill, which was in institution of Cassville almost from the beginning of the town to the commencement of the war, was used as a prison for Confederate troops and sympathizers in 1862-63. The building was ultimately torn down. D. P. Pharis' store was burned, and his farm produce carried off, entailing a total loss of $10,000. Pharis' addition to the town of Cassville, was surveyed by George Parrish, and acknowledged by D. P. Pharis June 2, 1887. - Cassville Republican, Weekly Paper, Thursday, August 31, 1893 - D. P. Pharis has traded for the business house of J. M. Scott on Main street, opposite the Citizens bank. - July 9, 1896, Cassville Republican - A Few of the Pioneers: D. P. Pharis is the oldest living merchant of Cassville. He came here in 1844. The above three with Jacob Hawk are the only ones who were here before Cassville was laid out. Wm C. Research Note: Cassville Republican, Thursday, May 24, 1894 - Saturday while Ella Phillips, aged about 14 years, was ironing at John Scott's north of town, where she was staying, her clothes caught fire from the cook stove. Being temporarily alone she rushed out to the pump, screaming for help. Mrs. Scott, who was in the garden, rushed to assist, but before the flames were extinguished the unfortunate girl was very severely burned. Heavy underwear protected her body from the waist up but one shoulder and a place on her back is badly burned. Her abdomen, hips, and thighs are charred and the lower limbs so badly blistered that little hopes are entertained of her recovery. While trying to save the girl, Mrs. Scott was considerably burned. Ella is a daughter of Celia Ann Phillips, now serving a sentence in the penitentiary for the murder of Henderson Phillips. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, June 14, 1894 - Died, Monday, June 11th, Ella, daughter of Harvey and Celia Ann Phillips, age 12 years, 1 month and ? days. Bert is to have a public sale Monday, December 20 at which time he will dispose of this personal property. - Cassville Democrat, Saturday, Jan. 10, 1920 - Bert Pickle died at his home 1-2 miles west of Oak Ridge school house. Jan. 1, 1920, of cancer of stomach, aged 35 years, 1 month and 18 days leaving his wife and one daughter to mourn his passing. He was born at Winterset, Iowa, Nov. 14, 1884, and moved from there to Colorado, about 13 years of age. He was married Dec. 18, 1907 to Miss Tillie Painter and to this marriage one daughter Gladys was born, age 11 years. He left his aged mother, 3 brothers and 6 sisters to mourn his passing. Three of the sisters live east of Cassville and are: Mrs. Emma Gates, Mrs. Maggie Gibbs and Mrs. U. S. Braught, Mrs. G. R. Fuqua, Willis, Texas, Mrs. Mary U. Mayers, Mrs. Florence Mervin and Rosa Lawrence of Lamar, Col., and David M. Of Rosedale, Ind., and John east of Cassville. He formerly lived in Pineville, MO., Purdy, MO. and Monett, MO.; was a retired farmer; was a veteran of the U.S. Navy who served in World War I. He was a minister, who pastored at the Christian Church in Purdy for many years, and was a guest minister at many local area churches. Survivors include his wife, Frances Talbert Pierce, whom he married on July 13, 1966; two step-daughters, Mary Jane King of Branson, Mo.;and Frances Sanderson of Birmingham, Ala.; seven step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grand-children. For two weeks or more Capt. Plattenburg has been confined to his home from an attack of rheumatism and was thought to his removing nicely. Sunday, when friends called upon him, he never had seemed quite so cheerful and talkative. There was no indication Monday that he was worse. He and his brother, Henry, southwest of town were planning soon to make a trip to Kansas City. A short time before he died he took suddenly bad with his heart trouble and soon passed quietly away. Funeral services, under the direction of the Cassville Lodge A. F. and A. M. No. 383 will be held Monday afternoon May 8. This will give Mrs. John Adams, a daughter of Idaho, time to reach Cassville for the funeral. J.S. Plattenburg was born at Dover, Lafayette county, this state, Oct. 30, 1842. There he grew to Manhood. He received a good common school education and was a student at the University of Missouri at the beginning of the Civil war. He left school to enter the Confederate army and there serve with honor to himself and to his regiment. For ability and gallantry he was promoted until he became Captain of Co. A in the Gordum Regiment of General Shelby's division. Following the war he farmed for a time in the home county and later after a year in Texas he located at Gainesville and began the study of law in Judge Price's office at Gainesville. After being admitted to the bar he practiced law at Gainesville and West Plains. Later he moved to Springfield and from there he came to Cassville in 1893. He engaged in business here for a time and continued the practice of law. For a number of years he was in the abstract business but sold his business a few years ago on account of his age. He was married to Miss Jane Boone of Gainesville in 1879. To them four children were born, three of whom are living, one having died in infancy. The living are Selby, Mrs. Ron Manley of this city and Mrs. John Adams of Idaho. Capt. Plattenburg was one of the best informed men in the county, by nature a close student and even in old age his mind was unusually clear and active. He was a man of kindly disposition, of high ideals and spirit, interest in education and public affairs, and the pains and care he took with work entrusted to him, made him a useful citizen. A number of years ago he was honored by the Democratic party with the nomination for the County Treasurer. Research Note: September 29, 1910, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Paulina Jane Plummer, widow of the late Dr. J. S. Plummer of this city, died at her home in Cassville Thursday, September 22, 1910, age 71 years and 8 months. Mrs. Plummer has been an invalid for a number of years and was confined closely to her home. After years of illness her departure came as no surprise to her many friends who often wondered at her remarkable endurance and patient submission to the ills of life. Paulina Walker Plummer, was born Jan 22, 1839 in Carroll County, Ark., and was an only daughter of Dr. John W. and Louisa B. Walker. When a child her parents settled in Jasper County where she grew to womanhood and was married to J. S. Plummer. They moved to Texas in 1863 and lived there four years, then moved to Barry County where the family has since made its home, first at Washburn and later moving to Cassville. She is survived by two sons and two daughters, Jeff of Carthage; John W., of Webb City; Mrs. P. H. Hood of Perryville and Mrs. J. W. Hisey of this city. Funeral services were conducted Friday at the residence by Rev. Yarbourgh and interment made in Oak Hill cemetery. Research Note: He was born April 30, 1928, in his childhood home on Grade School Hill (7th Street) in Cassville, Missouri, the son of Jess and Ima (White) Preddy. On September 18, 1953, he married Nanah Frances Cox. Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers, Lilburn and Raymond Preddy. Joe lived his entire life in Cassville, Missouri. After graduating from Cassville High School with the class of 1946, he studied one year at college in Springfield, Missouri. He began work at Barry Electric Cooperative in 1947, as assistant bookkeeper. He served in the United States Army from 1951 until 1953. After returning from the service he resumed his job with Barry Electric. He was named General Manager in 1967, and remained as such until his retirement in December, 1990. In 1991, Joe was awarded the A. C. Burrows Service Award from the Association of Missouri Electric Cooperatives. The award was in recognition of Joe's leadership in rural electrification distinguished by his dedication to helping others. In the community Joe took his responsibilities to heart. He was a member of the Cassville Rotary Club and served as President in 1986, and recipient of a Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary. Joe was active in the Cassville Chamber of Commerce during his working years and received the Community Service Award from the Chamber in 1988, citing his years of service to the Chamber, twice serving as President of the organization and numerous times as board member. Research Note: She was the daughter of Frank and Nanah (Hopkins) Cox. Frances' mother, Nanah, died after giving birth to Frances. Frances was raised by her maternal Grandmother, Jessie Hopkins, and joined a household with 12 children. Frances being the baby was raised by her many aunts and uncles. She attended rural schools throughout Southwest Missouri and graduated from Cassville High School in 1947. In 1953, she married Joseph Allen Preddy in Cassville, Missouri, where she resided the remainder of her life. Frances was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Allene Cook and Madge Bonvicin and a brother, Buford who died as an infant. Her husband Joe passed away in 2014. Frances worked in Cassville at various clerical jobs with one of her favorite being Culver Funeral Home which is now Fohn Funeral Home. She served in many capacities from bookkeeper to hearse driver, hairdresser to funeral singer. Frances volunteered all her life for organizations in this community. She delivered Meals on Wheels from 1974 to 2009 when her health kept her from the regular route. As a member of the First Baptist Church of Cassville she attended services regularly. Joe was a Methodist and Frances was loyal to the Cassville United Methodist Church as well, serving as Sunday School Teacher and Choir Member for years. Frances and Joe attended both churches faithfully. Besides her family the joy in her life was singing. She was a member of the Stamps Melody Girls Quartet and the Treble Tones Sextet. He was a son of Sampson and Elizabeth Price. He filed for his invalid pension on Nov. 12, 1869. Mary Jane filed for her widow's pension on June 12, 1880. - Notes of Opal Jena Anderson Pate, GG Granddaughter - The last Census that Robert Price was in was 1860 Franklin, Mullberry Township, AR, with Mary Jane and family. Robert Price's, Mother-In-Law, Mary Jane (Lowery) Shepard's obit stated that she came to Barry Co., MO in 1863. The next Census, 1870, shows Mary Jane and children, and her mother Mary Jane (Lowery) Shepherd, in Barry Co., Flatcreek Township, Cassville, MO. In the 1880 Barry Co., Flatcreek Township, the Price's Shepherd's, and Anderson's all on same page. Where Robert Price is buried, or even died at is still a mystery to us. Little Barry Price was born in 1866 in MO according to Census records. The youngest child of Robert's, so, could he have died of injuries of the Civil War? His wife Jane, was on the pension index list. The Barry Co. Acton from Ellington, MO, on Jan. 2, 1946 in AR. - Notes by Gala Lass at findagrave.com. - Dr. G. A. Purves and wife Velma came to Cassville early 1945 in the early part of their marriage. They were instrumental in changing the face of health care in the rural area surrounding their hometown. In 1946 Dr. Purves realized that Cassville needed a Hospital. He and Velma built Purves Hospital. Some of the structure is still being used for the Mercy Hospital in Cassville today. Velma assisted Doc in developing the school immunization program, establishing a home health care program and building a local hospital, all part of a tireless effort to improve the lives of the community's residents. Doc volunteered his services one Sat. a month at the Barry County Health department for a well child clinic. This encouraged parents to get a checkup for their children even if they had no money. He was on the School Board for many years. When he was Mayor he instituted the bonds for a sewer project in Cassville MO. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Velma of 54 yrs. Acton from Ellington, MO, on Jan. 2, 1946 in AR. - At the age of 85 years, 2 months and 17 days, Velma Evelyn Purves passed from this life. She was born in Piedmont, MO, the seventh of eleven children born to Edward Franklin and Stella Mae (Smith) Buffington. Velma was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Dr. Gail Alexander Purves. Velma and Doc came to Cassville early in their marriage and were instrumental in changing the face of health care in the rural area surrounding their hometown. Velma assisted in developing the school immunization program, establishing a home health care program and building a local hospital, all part of a tireless effort to improve the lives of the community's residents. Velma was a past member and officer of Silver Leaf, the Garden Club, and Eastern Star. She served as President of the local Parent-Teacher Association, directed Barry County's early home health care program and founded the CHS Band Boosters, soliciting community support and raising funds to purchase uniforms for the concert and marching bands. Many will remember Cassville's celebration of the Butterfield Stage Centennial, complete with period costumes and activities organized by Velma. In her spare time she was an avid golfer, bass fisherman and gardener. She was member of the Cassville United Methodist Church, Senior Citizens and a founding member of the Cassville Golf Association. Velma is survived by her sisters, Bettie Carter of Cape Girardeau, MO; and Virginia McGhee of Elsinore, MO; and by her dear friend, Belinda Petree of Cassville. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her 4 children, nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
