Mrs. Brookman (sister) of Cassville, MO was the informant on the death certificate. - Cassville Republican, Feb. 4, 1930 - T. H. McBeath, Aged 96, Passes Away Sunday, Was Veteran of Two Wars. Invalid Three Years. T. J. McBeath, a resident of Cassville since 1922, and for the past three years an invalid, passed away Sunday at the home of his niece, Mrs. W. H. Lathim, at the age of nearly 97 years. Theophilus J. McBeath was born in Wayne county Kentucky in 1833 and with his parents moved to Caldwell county Missouri, where he grew to manhood and for twelve years followed the profession of school teaching. At the outbreak of the Civil War he joined the Union army in which he served 4 years and 8 months. He re-enlisted and served for one year and two months in the Sioux Indian war under Gen. Miles. During the Civil War he was in the Battle of Lexington, Cold Harbor, Shiloh and the siege of Vicksburg. At the battle of Shiloh he had in charge of the muster roll of the Union army. He is thought to be the last survivor of his company, also of the 50th Illinois regiment. Returning home after his army service he was postmaster at Gridley, MO. for twelve years. In 1876 he was census enumerator for three townships in Caldwell County. He never married and in 1922 when broken in health he came to Cassville and made his home with his sister, Mrs. M. A. Brookman and for the past three years has been bedfast. He was given the devoted service of his sister, who cared for him although she was not exceptionally strong herself, and after the fire a few weeks ago that destroyed their home he was taken to the home of his niece. Mrs. W. H Lathim. Funeral services were held at the W. H. Lathim residence Monday afternoon conducted by Rev. Harvey Jones of Monett and interment made in Oak Hill cemetery under the direction of the Horine Funeral Service. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. M. A. Brookman and one brother A. C. S. McConnell. A series of six resolutions was presented by George G. Vest, complaining of the action of the Federal troops at Camp Jackson, etc., W. C. Duval and I. N. Shambaugh voting in favor of them with their seventy-seven fellow members. In the history of Neosho the transactions of the Secession Legislature are given up to adjournment to Cassville. - April 13, 1907, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Military History of Barry County: W. S. McConnell was arrested at Cassville and kept two years a prisoner. - First 150 Years in Cassville, MO - Of all the hotels that have served Cassville since 1845, the longest running was the Barry Hotel at the SW corner of the square. However, it is probably not as interesting from a historical point as, at least, one of the others...the McConnell Hotel which was located immediately north of what is now the Barry Hotel building on the west side of the square. William Shakespeare McConnell (1823-1889) was born in Maury Co., TN and 1843 migrated to Green Co., MO. He came to Cassville about 1849 to make his home. Earlier, he had studied law, as was the custom in those days, simply by "reading law" under the guidance of a practicing attorney. McConnell signed the roll of attorneys here in 1852. He also operated the hotel for over 30 years and practiced as a druggist and maybe as a physician during his lifetime. The following year, he married a daughter of John O. and Mary Carolina Burton, who lived on the site of the present Crystal Springs Trout Farm at the north edge of the city limits. Randy McConnell, a kinsman now living in Jefferson City and working as a journalist in state government, has done a great deal of research on the family, some of which is used here. McConnell bought his first town lot in Cassville in 1854, the forerunner of numerous town and country additions to his estate. He was elected to the MO House of Representatives on Aug. 1, 1860 and took office that December. He originally helped stall resolutions that would have clarified the state's intentions on secession, and he voted for a plan to provide for a non binding referendum on secession along with his cousin, Rep. Marcus Boyd of Greene Co. McConnell eventually ended up voting for the final bill to establish a constitutional convention, which Gov. Research Note: He was the son of Paul McCullough and Maudie Kincaide. On March 12, 1960, in Miami, OK, he was united in marriage to Connie Sue Buntin and remained married for fifty-two years. To this union two children were born. Preceding him in death were his father, Paul McCullough; his mother, Maudie Kincaide; one son, Robert McCullough and two brothers, Wayne McCullough and Robert Jackson. Lonnie was lovingly raised by T. J. and Clarence King of Cassville, Missouri. He served his country in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. Lonnie worked in law enforcement most of his life including working for the City of Cassville Police Department for twenty-eight years. He served as a city Patrolman, as the DARE Officer and Public Education Officer and for the last seven years as Chief of Police in Cassville. Upon his retirement in April of 2008, the city dedicated the new Cassville Police Department to Lonnie. In addition to his law enforcement duties, Lonnie was a devoted community volunteer. Research Note: Wife of John Thomas McFarlin. Daughter of Clifton Rhodes Eidson and Mary Frances Daley. - Crystal Caverns: - From 1854 to 1924 Crystal Caverns was nothing more than an interesting place to explore, the wondrous beauty seen by only a few. During this time the property was purchased by Clifford Eidson (Jemima's father). Eventually, the cavern was inherited by his son Phillip, and daughter Jemima (Eidson) McFarlin. Jemima, her husband John and brother Phillip opened the cavern to the public in 1924. Guests descended through a trap door using a wooden ladder, their way lighted by lanterns. John and Jemima's son Thomas helped with the tours as a young man, but upon returning from the war became interested in banking, and is now president of the Bank of Selina in OK. When husband and brother had passed away "Aunt Jemima," as she was called, continued to manage the business and conduct most of the tours. Late in the 1960's, Mrs. McFarlin's family discovered that her battle with diabetes had left her ninety per cent blind. No one knows how long she had been giving tours with nothing but memory to guide her. After forty years, Crystal Caverns was closed. Research Note: Cassville Democrat, Saturday, Jan. 31, 1920 - Another excellent citizen, mother and neighbor has been beckoned from earth in paradise, where she will be free from disease, trials and tribulations and there bask in the sunlight of her great redeemer, and meet her loved ones gone on before and await the coming of others from earth. Miss Francis Elizabeth McBeath was born October 3, 1887 in Wayne County, Kentucky. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wm. McBeath, who were born November 1799, in Knox County, Tenn. Her grandfather, Robert McBeath, was born in 1763 in Pennsylvania. She was twice married first to David R. Galloway who died in 1865. In 1868 she and E. O. McKee were married and to this union were born: Grant McKee of near Cassville, Cash and Chat McKee and Mrs. Ollie Willyard of Viola. She died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Brookman and another sister and her brother, J. T. McBeath in this city, suddenly Saturday morning while at the breakfast table. Mrs. McKee had been in poor health for sometime and had been making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Ollie Willyard near Viola, but had been visiting her son, Grant, of near this city, and sisters and brother in Cassville. In 1815 her parents moved to Clinton County, Missouri and in 1881 moved to Barry County where she has since resided. Mrs. McKee was a very plain, unpretentious woman, a faithful wife, loving mother and a member of the Methodist church. After services at the home of her sisters and brother in Cassville at 2 p.m. Monday, the remains were interred in Oak Hill Cemetery.
