Research Note: According to his death certificate he was Gustav Long, single and 69 years old, a farmer. He was a son of Karl Lang and Christana Dressler, both born Stuttgart, Germany. The stone has his name as Lang. - Wheaton Journal, October 4, 1928 - NEIGHBORS FIND GUS LANG DEAD - Gus Lang an old bachelor who lives near the Russell cemetery between Cassville and Butterfield was found dead Sunday morning by neighbors who had gone to his home to see about him as he had not been seen by any of them for a few days. His body was found in a corn field about a hundred yards from his home and from the appearance of the body he had been dead for three or four days. The body was in a very bad state of decomposition. The sheriff's office was notified and with Justice Hisey went to Mr. Lang's home where the coroner's inquest was held Sunday morning and his death was pronounced to have occurred from natural causes. It was concluded that he had a sudden heart attack and dropped dead. The body was brought to the Bradford funeral parlor. SSW: Adelia - Research Note: He was a son of John H. and Emelince (Poindexter) Lathim, both born Granger Co., TN. - Cassville Republican, Aug. 4, 1932 - Following months of rapidly declining health and more than two weeks of confinement to his bed, John H. Lathim, a resident of Cassville for the past fourteen years, passed away at his home on North Main street at 10:30 o'clock Saturday night, July 30, age 76 years. Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. Frank W. Jones of Stotts City, a brother-in-law of the deceased, and Rev. Chas Vanzandt of this city. Interment was made in the Oak Hill cemetery, under the direction of the Horine-Culver Funeral Service. The Masonic funeral service was given at the grave by Pythagoras Lodge No. 383 of which he was a member. John Henderson Lathim was born at Galveston, Tex., Feb. 18, 1856. When a very small child the family moved to Lawrence county, this State. He was reared and lived for many years in the Stotts City community. He was united in marriage to Miss Adelia Jones of Lawrence county, December 2, 1877. Later they went to Texas where they resided for a few years, returning to Lawrence county. In 1896 he and family moved to near Viola which continued to be his home until 1918 when he moved to Cassville. To this marriage nine children were born, two sons, Caleb and T. D., died after reaching manhood. The surviving children are, Will H., Mrs. Laura Benington, Guy, and Miss Alma of Cassville, Lora Carr of Cato., Mrs. Ella Mitchell of Porum., Okla., and Wiles O. of La Grande, Oregon. Mrs. Lathim passed away in June 1930. About one year ago he was married to Mrs. Cora Murray who also survives him. In early life Mr. Lathim professed faith in Christ and united with the Baptist church. He was a devout Christian gentlemen. Mr. Lathim was a man of highest ideals of honor, a citizen in whom all of his acquaintances had the utmost confidence and whom they held in highest esteem. He was a man of firm convictions and took a keen interest in seeing right prevail in all relations of life. For a number of years he served the city of Cassville as night watchman. No one could have performed this arduous task better and with greater fidelity. In his passing the county and community have lost one of their best citizens. SSW: Trish N. Miller and Lowell Leathers - Research Note: She was a daughter of Charles and Edna (Elkins) Norman. Rose grew up in the Roller Community, southwest of Washburn. She spent her childhood with her extended family; grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles. In 1944, her father passed away and she moved with her mother, Edna, sisters, Anne and Margaret to Bard, California. She attended Yuma High School with her best friend, Euphena Leathers (Bell) who introduced Rose to her brother, Lowell, a handsome, young veteran just returning from the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. On March 27, 1946, she married Lowell Leathers. Lowell and Rose were farmers in Bard, California. In 1947 their family was completed by the birth of their daughter. In 1956, they began growing citrus. In 1961, they opened a very successful roadside stand selling their citrus. This stand operated strictly on the honor system. Prices were marked on bags of fruit and a coffee can was left out for payments. In 1975, she and Lowell bought a house in Cassville and became "snow birds", traveling back and forth from the farm in Bard. In 1996, she and Lowell turned over operation of the farm to their daughter and became permanent residents of Cassville. Her granddaughter, Trish, followed her beloved grandparents and moved to Cassville to be near them. Rose and Trish were able to spend much time together before Trish's death in 2000. Research Note: He attended Cassville High School, graduating in 1969, and was excited to celebrate his 50th reunion over the summer with his classmates. Subsequently, he attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and received his undergraduate degree in political science in 1973. He then attended the University of Arkansas School of Law where he received his juris doctor (J.D.) in 1976. He met his wife Gayle after they were set up by, mutual friend, Chloe Epperly in 1982. They cheered on the Cassville Wildcats at a home football game as their first date. On June 2, 1984, Jim and Gayle were united in marriage at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Monett, Missouri and honeymooned in the San Francisco Bay Area. They celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary this past year. Preceding him in death are his parents, Barbara Zane LeCompte and James William "Bill" LeCompte. Since birth, he was an active member of the Cassville United Methodist Church, singing in the choir with his parents, and teaching Sunday school for over 20 years. He proudly attained his Eagle Scout commendation in high school. After establishing his private practice in Cassville, he practiced law for over 40 years. He served as board chairman of the Barry County Tax Board for the Developmentally Disabled catering to individuals with special needs for over two decades. Research Note: Michael Zane LeCompte, age 56 of Cassville, passed away at Mercy Hospital in Rogers, Arkansas on November 4, 2020, after a short bout with Covid-19. He received his education at Cassville High School, Class of 1983, and the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville. He was the CHS Student Body President in 1983. Growing up in Cassville, Michael was easily noticed around town while driving his prized 1963 Mercury Monterey, which was a gift from his beloved grandmother, Dove LeCompte. On May 15, 1987, Michael married his high school sweetheart, Jill Holman, at the First Baptist Church in Cassville, Missouri. Together they made a wonderful life with their three incredible children. Preceding Michael in death were his parents, Barbara Zane and Bill LeCompte; and his brother, Jim LeCompte. In 1988 he joined his father in their family business, LeCompte Ace Hardware. He loved working with his father. Together they grew the business and provided for their devoted customers until has father's death in April 2011. In June 2014, Michael and Jill opened Michael's Hardware in Cassville. Michael's love for Cassville was evident by his dedicated service to the community. He served three terms on the Cassville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Michael was President of the Cassville Chamber of Commerce in 2003 and 2011. Michael was awarded the Chamber's prestigious Community Service Award in 1993 for spearheading the snowflake Christmas lighting project, which still makes Cassville shine each Christmas season. Michael was one of the Blue's Brother's (Jake) in the inaugural edition of The Show in 1993 and was brought back by popular demand for three more editions of The Show. Additionally, Michael coached girl's softball, was an incredible supporter of school and community organizations, and was a proud Democrat. He was a Bill Clinton delegate at the 1996 Missouri State Democrat Convention. Michael attended the First Baptist Church in Cassville. Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Research Note: He was married and a farmer and a son of Miller Lee and Nancy Wheeler, both born VA. D. L. Mitchell of Cassville, MO was the informant. Charles M. Lee married Amanda E. Daugherty on Nov. 25, 1860 in Barry Co., MO. He married Sarah E. Erwin on Sept. 1873 in Barry Co., MO. - Civil War Veteran: Pvt. Co. A, 26th MO Inf. Served from Sept. 3, 1864 to Mar. 6, 1865. His head and hand had been injured. - Cassville Republican, February 25, 1915 - Charles M. Lee Dead: Charles M. Lee, a substantial farmer and stockman, and one of the county's oldest native born citizens, quietly passed into the sleep which knows no waking at his home about two and one half miles south of town at 1:00 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, February 21, 1915, from kidney trouble and complication of diseases. For months he had been on a general decline. At times his conditions were pronounced serious but his strong manly form withstood his aliments until temporary relief was brought. Saturday night his ailments became serious and he gradually grew worse until the various diseased conquered his once vigorous body. He was 74 years, 6 months, and 14 days old and was born at the Lee Spring, one mile south of town, August 9, 1840. He was a son of the late Miller and Nancy Lee and was the youngest child in a family of thirteen children. Mrs. Tennessee Bare of Eureka Springs, Ark., is the only surviving member of this large family. With the exception of a short time, spent in the Civil War he lived on a part of his father's farm all his life. He was been twice married and leaves two children from his first marriage. They are Will Lee of California and Mrs. Florence Siler of Newtonia, Newton County. In September 1873 he was married to Sarah E. Erwin. To them was born five children, two of who are living, Ilus, who is engaged in the practice of law at Kansas City and Wear who resides on the home place. The deceased was an excellent example of the sturdy manhood and aggressive personality of the early type of citizens of the county. By nature he was a close student of affairs relating to the general progress of this county and community. He was a man of strong convictions and never hesitated to express his views upon any question which came up. He was independent in thought; kind of disposition and a friend to every body. In his death the county and community in which he practically lived all his life has lost one of its most substantial citizens. The funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 11 o'clock in charge of Rev. J. T. Brattin at the Cassville Cemetery where burial will be held. - 1870 Census gives his wife as Amanda, age 24 and C. M. Lee Dead: Mrs. Inez Lee, wife of Ilus M. Lee, a prominent attorney of Kansas City, died Tuesday morning, July 18, of lung trouble, aged 35 years. For many months' Mrs. Lee had been in very poor health and her death had for some time been expected by her relatives and many friends. Mrs. Lee was the eldest daughter of Robert P. Thompson of St. Louis, who lived in Cassville some years ago, where Mrs. Lee grew to womanhood. In December of 1900 she was married to Ilus Lee, then an attorney of Pineville. Soon after their marriage they moved to Neosho and then to Kansas City where Mr. Lee is engaged in practice of Law. She leaves a father, two sisters, one brother, a husband and thee children, to mourn her death. She was a member of the M. E. church South in which her Christian influence was always for that which was Christ like. The funeral which was conducted at the Oak Hill Cemetery by Rev. E. A. He married three times. The first time when very young to Jane Bussell of Tennessee. They had two daughters, Catherine and Amanda. After Jane died he married Fannie Bean also of Tennessee. They had two children, William and Louisa. During the Civil War J. R. Lee served in the Union Army. Fannie Bean, his second wife died during the Civil War. In 1872 J. R. married Lenora Parthena (Porter) Owens in Lawrence County, MO and they settled in Barry County, Missouri where they raised a family of 5 children and part of the time J. R.'s children from his first two marriages. Children of the marriage of J. R. Lee and Lenora Parthena Porter were Sarah Ebbanatte Lee, Elzie Porter Lee, Jerry Asbury Lee, Alford Buford Lee, and Lucy Lee. - Civil War Veteran. He was the husband of Parthena (Porter) Lee (his third wife). - Cassville Democrat, July 17, 1920 - Again we are reminded that death is sure, as we journey through this life and the immortality of the soul is equally impressed upon the mind and heart of man. The hope of immortality springs from the deepest feels of the soul, the feeling of kinship with eternity. The problem of life and death will ever remain unsolved, at least until the day of eternity shall dawn, then all will be rewarded according to the record made on earth. Jeremiah R. Lee was born in North Carolina, August 18, 1833 and was 87 years, 10 months and 25 days old. His parents moved to Tennessee, where he grew to manhood. When the Civil War came on, he espoused the cause of the Union and entered the army. He was married three times and the last time to Miss Parthena Porter at Verona, where he moved from Kansas, who survives him. He moved to Coriscana, Barry County, many years ago, where he lived several years and then moved to this city where he continued to live to the time of his death. He was a wagon repairer by trade and followed that occupation while living here. He had been gate keeper at the reunion grounds for many years and he will be missed by the many who have and will attend the reunion. He left eight children surviving him, who are: J. W. Lee of Wayne county, who has been with his father during his sickness, Mrs. Louisa Johnson of Jackson county, Tenn., Mrs. J. C. Lowe of Near Cassville, Mrs. Catherine Thompson of Monett, Asbury Lee of Phoenix, Arizona, Buford Lee of Dallas, Texas, Porter Lee of Dallas, Oregon, and Mrs. John Taylor of Cassville. He left many grandchildren. The funeral was conducted by Rev. It appears from that record that Elias Smith was her step-father and that her true name was named Mullins and not Smith. - Cassville Republican, February 22, 1912 - Mrs. Mary Hays Lee died Monday night Feb. 19 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Marshal Hutchens following an illness of several days, in the age of 72 years, 5 months and 20 days. She was born near Shiloh, Tennessee in 1830. About the time of the Civil War the family moved to this state. Her first husband whose name was Hays died at Marionville. He was a Federal Soldier. Mrs. Marshall Hutchens, Mrs. Taylor Black and Mrs. Robert Anderson's mother were children of this marriage. In later years she married Andrew W. Lee, a brother of J. R. Lee, of this city. He died several years ago and Mrs. Lee has been making her home with Mrs. Hutchens. Rev. J. T. Wellman, pastor, delivered the funeral sermon. - Feb. 29, 1912, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Suburban News: It is with great sorrow that we chronicle the death of Mr. Wm. Lindley residing on O. P. Johnson's farm, of pneumonia after an illness of about eight days, age 77 years. He was born in McLean County, Ill., in 1835 and professed faith in Christ when 18 years of age and lived a consistent Christian life ever after. He leaves a widow and nine children to mourn his death. He came to Missouri last April to reside with his daughter, Mrs. Miller, in hopes that his health might be benefited but death came to his relief after a great deal of suffering. Funeral services conducted by Rev. T. F. Kennedy, Saturday at 2 o'clock p.m., after which the remains were laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery at Cassville. Both were listed on the Indian census rolls as members of the Osage Tribe. Thomas second married Ethel (Pannell) (Linley) Henbest. He died in 1966 in San Diego, CA. - Cassville Democrat, Saturday, Feb. 28, 1920 - Mrs. Tom Linley: Another mother has been taken, leaving bleeding hearts that are lacerated with wounds that will not heal; because their mother is not. The good book says that the day of death is more precious than the day of birth, yet we can not see and know why, because it is fraught with the greatest sadness and sorrow, because of the separation. Miss Susan Hilderbrand was born in Osage Nation, Okla., in 1886, and was married to Thos. Linley, in 1907, and six children were born of this marriage, four sons and two daughters, the oldest son 12 years and the daughter a few months old. She died Feb. 22, 1920, in this city of flu pneumonia, aged 34 years, leaving her husband and children that needed her care and attention. She left four brothers, three of them: Joseph of Chelsea, Richard and George of Bartlesville, Okla., attended her funeral and James of Pawhuska, Okla., could not attend on account of sickness in his family. Rev. J. T. Brattin conducted short funeral services at the Linley home at 2:30 p.m., Monday. Interment was made in Oak Hill Cemetery at this place. LIVINGSTON DEAD - A beautiful and lovely life has closed on earth, leaving a handsome monument inscribed with good deed and an exemplary life, that had an admiration for the accomplishment of good for her acquaintances that would lead them to Christ and a better life. This was her earthly ambition to aid in making the world better, by pointing the way to that everlasting life of love and happiness in that glory land. Many of the girls and boys, now men and women, who went to school to her as teacher in Cassville, will vividly remember the blessed and lovely character of this good woman and how she counseled them for the better and nobler things, that would lead on and up to that better land, will drop a tear of sorrow at her calling. She died at 6 a.m., Monday morning, May 17, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Rose Stuckey in Monett, just with the awakening life of a new day, she went to sleep like a tired child. It was just as the birds caroled the coming of the morning and just as they rosy fingers of the orb of day tinted the eastern sky with a sheen of glory. Surely a fitting time for a pure spirit to take its flight heavenward. Miss Mary Louise Statler was born in Shellsburg, Penn., Jan. 12, 1846 and died May 17, 1920, of paralysis, age 74 years, 4 months and 5 days. Dec. 26, 1866, she and Capt. John A. Livingston were married at his native home and immediately after, they moved to Neosho, Mo., where they resided until 1886, when they moved to Cassville and have lived here since. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and was a great worker in church, Sunday School and for the cause of temperance and never tired, as we can all testify too. All her daughters, Mesdames Mary Dunkenson, Hatfield, Mo., Anna Roller of Cassville, Florence Kirk of Newton, Kan., and Rose Stuckey, Monett, were with her at her death. Her son Wm. and wife came Tuesday for the funeral. Her son-in-laws, Dr. Dunkeson of Hatfield, Mo., David D. Roller of Cassville, and Ross Stuckey were with her. The remains were conveyed to this city, Tuesday, May 18, by Callaway Undertaking Co., and funeral services were conducted at the Presbyterian Church, at 2 p.m. by Rev.'s J. F. King of Monett and Denton R. Woods of Yale, Okla., where a large congregation of friends have assembled to pay the last tribute of love and respect to a blessed mother, friend, neighbor and citizen. Many beautiful flora emblems were sent. The remains were interred in Oak Hill Cemetery in this city in the family lot. She was survived by her husband and five children. - Ross L. Aaronson, age 26, married Joseph Travis, age 27, on Nov. 1, 1906 in Jackson Co., MO. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, August 29, 1918 - Mrs. Pearl Lodge who had suffered for the past two years from tuberculosis passed like a child into its sleep, from this life to her eternal home, Sunday afternoon in this city. The funeral service was held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock a the home of her sister, Mrs. C. D. Higganbotham, conducted by Rev. Ed Chappell and interment made in Oak Hill Cemetery. Pearl (Aaronson) Lodge was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Aaronson who came to the United States from Sweden and became citizens of this country. The subject of this sketch was born at Monmouth, Ill., June 24, 1880. Growing to womanhood she became a teacher and later married a Mr. Travis. To them was born a daughter, Miss Margaret, who surviving the death of her husband she united in marriage with a Mr. Lodge. No children were born to this marriage. Mrs. Lodge was a missionary in Cuba during this period of the Spanish American War. Her home before coming to Cassville in April of this year was in New York City. About two years ago she contracted tuberculosis from which trouble she died at the age of 38 years. She was a woman of culture and a devoted Christian lady. He exemplary life of service for others will be a consolation to her bereaved relatives. She leaves three bothers, two of who are physicians in California, and four sisters. Mrs. Loftin had not been well since the arrival of a son at their home about five weeks ago. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Zilliox east of Cassville. Mrs. Loftin was born in Oklahoma in 1893. With her parents she moved to the locality about twenty years ago. He first married Obedience Rowden in Rhea Co., TN on Dec. 31, 1828. - Research Note: Goodspeed's 1888 History: In 1858 John Logan built a steam flouring mill at the NE corner of the town; it did not stay long; it happened to be a bad time to build mills or make improvements. (No date on this): The East side of the square was entirely gutted, and John Logan's great steam mill, so often used by Federal and Confederate was burned down. This mill was built about the year before the war, at a cost of $14,000. On June 8, 1847 John Logan and Catherine, his wife, conveyed to Barry County the SW quarter of the NE quarter of Section 29, Twp. 23, Range 27, being forty acres, having for the eastern boundary the town lots of Cassville. His wife was Eliza Bush, married about 1869. - Cassville Republican, February 22, 1912 - Porterfield Logsdon Dead: With little warning of the approach of immediate dissolution, Porterfield Logsdon passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Hopton, in this city, Thursday, February 15, of Bright's disease. He was born in Hart County, KY, Oct. 1, 1848. When a boy he went to Iowa where he lived for a number of years. Several years ago he moved to this county and located at Golden. He lived in Cassville for awhile about four years ago and worked at this trade, that of a stone mason. He was married in 1869. There was born to them eight children, one daughter, Mrs. Hopton, and three sons, Harry of Idaho, Jasper of Kansas and Guy of beaver, Ark., survive him. Mrs. Logsdon died in August 1910. Mr. Logsdon was a quiet, hard working citizen. He had his peculiar ideas but was a man of unquestioned integrity and highly respected. Rev. J. T. Research Note: Her obit has death date as Nov. 22 and her death certificate has it as Nov. 23. She was a daughter of Rev. Samuel Oscar Babb and Elizabeth Roberts, buried at Corinth Cemetery. Wife of A. J. Lowder. - Cassville Democrat, Nov. 29, 1929 - Mrs. Sarah Lowder, 80 years old, died Saturday morning, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mattie Baker, of Paralysis, in Monett. Mrs. Lowder was the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Samuel Babb and was born in Tennessee. The family came to Barry county in an early day and she spent the most of her life in Cassville and vicinity. Mrs. Baker is her only surviving child. She leaves one brother, Bascom Babb of Cassville, three sisters, Mrs. Dock Hefley of Cassville, Mrs. Tiny Bradley and Mrs. Witt Eassary of Miami, Okla. A brother, J. W. Babb of Grant, Okla., died Nov. 6 and a sister Mrs. Shadd Wallen, Sr., of Fairland, Okla., died last July at the depot in Monett, after a stoke of paralysis. Mrs. Lowder was a Christian woman and member of the Methodist church at Cassville. Aunt Sarah, as she was familiarly known had been in failing health for several months. Her condition became more serious a few weeks ago, at which time she was taken to the home of her daughter in Monett, where the end came peacefully last Saturday. Funeral services were conducted at the Horine Funeral Home in this city, Sunday afternoon, by Rev. J. S. McQueen of Wheaton, after which the remains were laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery. Many beautiful floral emblems were received by the bereaved family from friends near and afar, as evidence of the high esteem in which this excellent character was held. Aunt Sarah resided many years in Cassville and was loved by everyone. Pallbearers were Harry Windes, Cleo Hawk, Evan Shore, Elias Horine, Raymond Williams and John Ray. Flower girls were: Mrs. C. H. Hadley, Mrs. Charles Ray, Mrs. Dora Talbert, Mrs. Bon Manley, Mrs. Henry Platenbury, Mrs. W. T. Ward. A quartette composed of Mrs. Glen Pearl, Mrs. John Ray, Clint Blythe and Chas. Research Note: She was preceded in death by her mother, Flossie Hirsch, and father Beaty Palmer. Shirley lived most of her life in Pasadena, Texas. Moving to Rye, Texas in 1990, her career changed directions from a storage unit manager to working in home health care to the elderly while living with her aging mother, Flossie Hirsch. Eventually her and her mother moved to The Woodlands, TX where Shirley became active in the Senior Community Center at Tamarac Pines Assisted Living Facility by holding bible studies and singing praise services for those in the that area. This was her calling. In 2004 moving to San Saba, TX brought Shirley closer to living near her son, Larry Saxton and his wife, Angie. Private family services will be held.
