Inscription: "Wife of Phillip" - Research Note: Sebra Watkins, age 22, married Phillip Haddix, age 22, on Dec. 17, 1869 in Barbour Co., WV. - Cassville Republican, August 13th of 1896 - Died Aug. 5, Mrs. Sebra Haddix of consumption. Born Dec. 4, 1847. She leaves husband and 7 children. Buried at Cassville Cemetery. - Donna's Note: Her husband was named Phillip Haddox or Haddix and they had a son named James Phillip who died in Sherman Co., NE. Samuel was a Civil War Soldier apparently from WV. He died after 1896 but it is not known where. - Note of Donald Haddix: Sebetha "Sebe" Watkins Haddix was the third daughter born to Bryce "Gaz" Gassaway and Nancy (McDaniels) Watkins. She was born in Taylor County, Virginia and had six sisters and 5 brothers. Sebetha was known as Sebra. She met her husband, Phillip Haddix, after he returned home from the Civil War after serving in the 1st West Virginia Calvary. Phillip was from the Phillips area of Barbour County, West Virginia. They were married December 17, 1869. Phillip and Sebetha started their family in West Virginia but eventually moved to Nebraska and homesteaded near Ansley in the Clear Creek area. They had eight children including six boys and 2 girls, one who apparently died at as an infant. Tuberculosis or "consumption" treatment was available in Missouri during the late 1800's. Apparently Sebetha began treatment there but died and was buried in Cassville. - Phillip Haddix was the son of Samuel Haddix, the father of James Phillip Haddix, grandfather of James McKinley Haddix, and great-grandfather of James R. Haddix. Although the marker at the cemetery spells his surname as Hadix, it is actually Haddix. His great-grandfather William Haddix served in the Revolutionary War. His family lived near Phillipi, in the Moatsville area, in West Virginia near the Tygart Valley River. Phillip Haddix was the first Haddix to enter into and homestead in Nebraska after the Civil War probably in 1876. He was Corporal in the 1st West Virginia Calvary and he received a pension for his service. He lived the last few years at the what was called the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Grand Island where he passed in 1928. She graduated from Cassville High School in 1926, attended Douglas Business College in Springfield for two years, and was deputy Barry County collector for 24 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Cassville Autumn Leaf Club, Cassville Garden Club, and Celestia Chapter of the Order of the Easter Star. She married John Henry Haddock on March 5, 1933, and he preceded her in death in March of 1980. Mrs. Electa Mitchell of Cassville, MO was the informant. - Cassville Republican, June 21, 1945 - COUNTY'S OLDEST CITIZEN PASSES ON - Funeral Here To-Day For Mrs. N. L. Hailey Who Was 101 Years Old: Barry County's oldest citizen Mrs. Nancy Hailey, widow of the late Newton L. Hailey, for years one of the county's prominent citizens and public officials, passed away at her home in Cassville Monday evening, June 18. Beloved by a wide circle of friends all over the county, to who she was affectionally known as "Mother" Hailey, or "Aunt Nancy". Frail though she had been for a number of years, it was only during that past year that she had been closely confined to her home. Even then she was always delighted to greet her friends when they called at the home. On Saturday, Dec. 18, 1943 she celebrated her 100th birthday. This day her family and friends made a very happy one for her. The numerous gifts and the shower of cards and letters from friends far and near were tokens of the high esteem in which she was held. In a pioneer home established by her father, the late William McKinney on Flat Creek in Barry county. Nancy McKinney was born Dec. 18, 1843. Her parents had come from Virginia to this county and established a home in 1841. She was united in marriage to Newton L. Hailey in 1864. He was a native of Bedford county, Tenn. In 1886 when Mr. Hailey was elected Sheriff of this county the family moved from their farm in Mineral township to Cassville and Mrs. Hailey had lived in Cassville ever since. Her home was known for it fine hospitality. She was a lady of many excellent traits of character. Her hands were never idle and her helpful, wholesome philosophy of life was an encouragement and inspiration to all who knew her. For many years she had been a faithful member of the Christian church. She was devoted to her family and was actively interested in the welfare of her neighbors and friends. She exemplified the life of good neighbor and by kindly deeds won a high place in the esteem of her friends. Mr. Hailey and two of their sons, Will and Frank precede her in death. She is survived by three daughters; Mrs. Flossie Thiele of Pierce City, Mrs. Zua Newman, and Mrs. Electa Mitchell of Cassville; and two sons, Sterling P. Hailey of Webb City and Charles P. Hailey of Cassville; also by 17 grand-children; 16 great grandchildren, and one great great grand-child. Funeral services were held at the Koon funeral chapel this afternoon at 2 o'clock. The service is in charge of three Cassville Pastors: Rev. C. F. Siler, Rev. C. I. Kenney and Rev. W. B. Dalton. Burial will be on the Hailey lot in the Oak Hill cemetery here under direction of the Koon undertakers. She was a charter member of Celestial Chapter O. E. S., No. 81, and for eighteen years in succession filled the office of Warder in the Chapter. The Chapter gave it's beautiful and impressive ritual burial service at the grave, Mrs. Hailey had also for years been an active member of the Silver Leaf Benefit Club. - November 13, 1909, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Mrs. Wm. Suttles of near Jenkins died of dropsy, Tuesday, Nov 9, aged about 42 years, leaving a husband and children to mourn her death. She was a member of the M. E. Church and a sister of C. C. Carney of Cassville, T. W., and F. P. Carney of Marionville and a niece of Mrs. N. L. Hailey of this city. C. C. Carney and wife, Mrs. N. L. Hailey and daughter Mrs. O. H. Thiele attended the funeral Wednesday. She was a splendid wife, mother and citizen. - September 17, 1914, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Mrs. N. L. Research Note: Wife was Nancy Ann. Son of Benjamin Franklin Hailey and Harriett Ophelia (Gates) (Hailey) Hubbert. - Goodspeed's 1888 History of Barry Co., MO - Newton L. Hailey, sheriff of Barry County, Mo., was born in Bedford County, Tenn., in 1848, and is a son of Benjamin F. and Ophelia (Gates) Hailey. The father was of English descent, and was born in Bedford County, Tenn. He was a farmer, and resided in his native State until 1850, when he removed to Texas Five years later he proceeded to Carroll County, Ark., and engaged in blacksmithing and the hotel business, continuing until his death, in 1864. His wife is of Scotch descent and was born in Tennessee. They became the parents of five children, viz.: Newton L., Allen F., William J. (editor of the Berryville Progress, of Berryville, Ark.), Alphonso C. (postmaster of Berryville, Ark.) and Jefferson D. P. (who is a partner of his brother, William J., in the newspaper office). Newton L. secured a good education in Clark's Academy, of Berryville, Ark. In 1866 he was united in marriage with Nancy A. McKinney, a daughter of William McKinney, and a native of Barry County, Mo. Their union has been blessed by the birth of six children, viz.: William W., Frank H., Flossa O., Zua M., Sterling N. and Charles P. Two years after his marriage Mr. Hailey removed his family to Barry County, locating in Mountain Township, ten miles east of the county seat. Here he purchased a farm, and now owns 320 acres. Politically, his views accord with those of the Democratic party. In 1878 he was favored with the office of county assessor, to which position he was re- elected in 1880. In 1886 he was elected to his present position of sheriff. Mr. Hailey is an influential and highly esteemed citizen, and has made an efficient public officer. He is a Mason, and both he and wife are zealous members of the Christian Church. Mr. Hailey's mother is still living. After the death of her first husband she married William Hubbard/Hubbert, who for many years was clerk of the Barry County Court. In 1870 Mr. Hailey was appointed postmaster at Hill City, in this county, and served until 1882, when the office was discontinued, and then an office was established at Mr. Halley's residence, which post-office assumed his name, and is known by the name of Hailey, Mo., today. - 1895 Bio in Newspaper at ancestry.com - On the north side of the public square is the drug business of N. L. Hailey, headquarters for strictly pure drugs, from which prescriptions are carefully compounded at any hour, patent medicines of the standard sorts, stationery, perfumes that are the delight of the users, and toilet articles in variety. Lead, oil and prepared paints constitute an important feature of the business and tobacco and cigars regale the consumers of the weed. Doing a liberal business, Mr. Hailey extends every accommodation possible to his customers and gives one hundred cents worth for each dollar. In the development of Barry county, Mr. Hailey has taken an active part and to him are due some notable reforms, especially that of the taxation of land belonging to non residents. From 1878 to 1882 he was county assessor, and observing that even the poorest land secured from the government was assessed at $1.25 an acre, while some excellent land belonging to the Railway Company was assessed at but fifty cents an acre, and believing this discrimination unjust, he raised the assessment of the latter to a uniform rate of $1.25 per acre. This brought to the several school districts in which the land lay a great deal of money and enabled them to conduct better and longer schools each year and erect better school buildings. Mr. Hailey is a native of Bedford Co., TN, and after moving to AR attended Clark's Academy at Berryville. He came to this county in 1866, settling at the confluence of the two branches of Rock House, where he still has a good farm of nearly 400 acres and mining interests. Two years before moving here he married Nancy A. McKinney, a member of one of our oldest families. At that time the hills were not settled at all and were full of deer and bears. He killed a large bear on Rock Creek not far from where Elder Smallwood now lives. In those days rail-splitting's were more frequent than now and he put in a good portion of the first few weeks in attending sixteen of such festivities, subsisting on the diet of corn bread and molasses. Though but a boy, in 1863 he enlisted under Price in the Confederate army and was with him during his last raid in MO. He served about a year. His father, Benjamin F. Hailey, was a captain in the Confederate army, and his grandfather was killed at Berryville, AR, by Thomas Crissup's company of MO militia. The post office at Hailey was established at his house and named in his honor. It was the successor of Hill City, which died with the excitement over mineral found near there. He was first appointed postmaster of Hill City under Grant in 1870, and remained in charge of the office until 1893, being continuously the postmaster 23 years, a record probably not equaled by another in the county. In 1886 Mr. Hailey was elected sheriff of Barry Co. and re-elected in 1888. It was during his first administration (Apr. 15, 1887) that he executed the only criminal ever legally hung in the county -- Edward Clum. It was in 1888, while sheriff, that he engaged in the drug business, which he has prosecuted since. In the fire he lost the most of his stock of drugs and three buildings which were in the burned district. Though incurring this heavy loss, which was unprotected by insurance, he joined with the town in its upbuilding by first putting up one of the iron buildings on East Main street, and later, upon the failure of the Citizens Bank, completed the brick block occupied by himself on North street and by the post offices on Main street. - May 18, 1911, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Mr. and Mrs. N. L. Hailey left Sunday evening for Little Rock, Ark., and will spend this week there attending he Confederate Soldiers reunion. - May 30, 1912, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Word was received Monday morning by N. L. Hailey, A. C. Hailey and Allen Hailey, of this city and of Hailey, that their mother, Mrs. H. O. Hubbert, of Berryville, Ark., was dangerously ill. They took the evening train for her bedside. Mrs. Hubbert is 82 years old and on account of her advanced age is not likely to recover if her case is as serious as reported. - September 3, 1914, Thursday, Cassville Republican - N. L. Hailey, spent Monday looking after his farm at Hailey. He reports a Redding boy killed a wolf recently in that vicinity that had been doing considerable damage for some months. - May 12, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Local And Personal: N. L. Hailey and chauffeur took out the mail to Mano and Eagle Rock, Thursday in a Ford. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, January 2, 1919 - Dr. and Mrs. O. H. Thiele of Pierce City, had not heard form their son, Tony, who is in the U. S. Navy for many weeks, neither had any of his relatives or Cassville friends. Word was had from him a few days ago and he is all right. N. L. Hailey of this city, Tony's grandfather, received a letter from him. Tony was in European waters when the letter was written. - Cassville Republican, Aug. 7, 1919 - Reunion Opens With Record Crowds Thursday and Friday to be Big Days: A number of the soldiers of the world war were in uniforms. Josiah Smalley and N. L. Hailey each wore their uniforms of the Civil War representing the Blue and Gray. - Cassville Republican, Sept. 25, 1919 - Mr. and Mrs. N. L. Hailey returned the first of the week from a pleasant visit of a few weeks with their son, Charles, in Michigan. They are both feeling fine over the trip. Mr. Hailey says that Michigan is a great manufacturing state and that everybody is busy. - Cassville Republican Oct. 16, 1919 - Mr. and Mrs. N. L. Hailey returned the first of the week from Atlanta, Ga., where they attended the annual reunion of the Confederate veterans. They had an enjoyable trip. - The Wheaton Journal, Friday, June 4, 1920 - Newton L. Hailey, one of the most prominent citizens of Barry County, passed away at his home in Cassville, Monday morning, May 31st, at the age of 72 years. Mr. Hailey was a veteran of the Confederate Army and has served the people of Barry County in the capacity of assessor for two terms and one term as sheriff. He will be remembered by his wide acquaintance throughout the county as one of the leading public spirited men of his time. Funeral services were conducted at Cassville Tuesday, Mr. J. S. McQueen and J. T. Johnson of Wheaton attended the funeral. - Cassville Democrat, Saturday, June 5, 1920 - NEWTON L. HAILEY DEAD - For nearly one half a century he had resided in our county, been active, energetic and progressive citizen sympathetic with his fellow man in his sorrows, trials and tribulations and when the worthy person needed succor he gave his money. In sickness he was kind and clever. He had a good heart that beat responsive to the welfare of his neighbors. He loved his family and always was delighted to learn the success of his sons, daughters and grandchildren. In his earlier life, he had acknowledged his belief in the one, true and living God and in his last hours, he proclaimed his continued belief in the Christ that died that we might live and passed away as if only going to sleep, without a struggle. He enjoyed the confidence of all his acquaintances, as being a man of the highest integrity and was strictly honest. Newton Lafayette Hailey was born in Bedford County, Tenn., Sept. 11, 1843, and was a son of late Benjamin F. and Mrs. Ophelia (Gates) Hailey. The parents moved to Texas in 1850. In 1855, they moved to Berryville, Carroll County, Ark., where Newton L. grew to manhood. When the Civil War came on, he joined the Southern Army when 16 years of age and came out without a scratch. He and Miss Nancy McKinney, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wm. McKinney, old well known and high esteemed early settlers of the county on Rock House Creek, near where Hailey p. o., is now located, who were temporarily living at Berryville, during the war, were married and to this union, nine children were born, seven living, four sons and three daughters, who are: Wm. W. of Hailey, Frank H., of Oklahoma, Mrs. Flossie Thelle of Pierce City, Mrs. Zua Newman of Mt. Vernon, Sterling P., of near Mineral Spring, Chas. P., of Marbuette, Michigan and Mrs. Electa Mitchell of Cassville. All his children and many of his grandchildren were with him during his sickness and death, excepting his son Frank, who could not be located. Mrs. Hailey survives her husband. He moved from Berryville, Ark., to Barry county and located near his father-in-law, Wm. McKinney where Hailey p. o., is now located, in 1872 where he successfully farmed and raised stock. In 1878, he was nominated by the democrats of Barry County for county assessor and was selected. He was re-nominated in 1880. In 1886 his party nominated him for sheriff and he was elected and reelected in 1888, and in his official life, made an efficient officer. He was Postmaster at Hailey post office for twelve years. He moved to Cassville to assume his duties as Sheriff in 1887, and continued his residence in this city to his death. He was always alive to the best interests of this city and county and had good words for his town, county and people, when inquiring people were desirous of knowledge of this section. He died at his home in this city, Monday morning, May 31, 1920, at 1:30 a. m., of kidney trouble, and uremic poison, age 71 years, 8 months and 20 days. He left four brothers who are: Allen of Cato, Wm., of near Ash Grove, Fonny and J. D. of Berryville, Ark., who were with him during his sickness. Rev.'s C. F. Rose, pastor of the Christian Church of this city and J. S. McQueen of Wheaton, conducted funeral services at the Hailey home, Tuesday, at 2 p.m., after which the Mason took charge of the remains and gave them Masonic interment in Oak Hill Cemetery. We will miss Nute Hailey in Cassville and Barry county, in his cordial greetings and peculiar sayings, that always produced laughter. He always concealed his good qualities and the gruff part was on the exterior. Many beautiful flowers were sent to the home as a token of love, respect and sweet memory for Nute. The business houses of Cassville, closed during the funeral services, as a token of esteem and respect for our fellow citizen. Many citizens of different places in the county, attended the funeral, showing the esteem in which the deceased was held. - Cassville Democrat, May 29, 1920 - Allen Hailey has been attending his brother, N. Thomas is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery. - Cassville Republican, Apr. 15, 1915 - An Excellent Mother passes Away: Mrs. Florence Margaret Hale, wife of W. R. Hale, formerly circuit clerk of this county, died at her home in this city early Saturday morning, April 10, 1915 of pneumonia fever, aged 37 years, 1 month and 18 days. Mrs. Hale was a daughter of Thomas Arnold of this city and was born in Garett (sic) county, Ky, February 22, 1878. At the age of three years her parents moved to Indiana and resided there until 1894 when they moved to this county and settled near Viola. On January 13, 1893, she was married to W. R. Hale. To this union were born seven children, five living. Besides the husband and father she leaves three brothers and numerous relatives and friends to mourn her loss. At the age of 17 years she professed faith to Christ and became a member of the Viola Baptist church. She was a faithful church and Sunday school worker and always took a devoted interest in religious work. In her death every phase of religious work in her church has lost a consistent member, the husband a devoted wife and the children a kind and affectionate mother. Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church Sunday at 2 p.m. by Rev. Siler at Anderson, in the presence of a large congregation of people which showed the respect and esteem which the deceased was held in this community. Interment was made in the Oak Hill cemetery. - Donna's Note: Her death certificate gives her birth date as Feb. 18, 1879 and her death date as April 9, 1915, burial was on April 11th. The stone reads that she died April 11, 1915. According to it she was born in Garrett Co., KY and Thomas Arnold born Pulaski Co., KY was her father and her mother was Sarilda Nickle born Rock Castle Co., KY. Research Note: Daughter of Ray and Myrtle (Mueller) Deill. She was a 1932 graduate of Pittsburg, KS High School, attended Pittsburg State College, and was a Classified Advertising Manager for the Pittsburg Headlight and Sun Newspaper. On May 3, 1937, she married Glen Lloyd Hall at the Pittsburg Methodist Church in Pittsburg, Kansas. During World War II, Mrs. Hall was a bookkeeper at Camp Crowder while her husband, Glen, managed the local theater. In 1943 Glen and Clairece purchased the Ozark Theater and in 1944 they opened the Hall Theater located on the square in Cassville. They opened the Green Hills Drive-In Theater in Cassville in 1952. In 1960 they built and began operation of the Campbell Point Boat Dock and Motel, and in 1963 they developed the Sycamore Landing Subdivision, both in Shell Knob, Missouri. In 1969 they developed the Southern Hills Subdivision in Cassville. After 54 years of marriage, Glen passed away on October 21, 1991. Mrs. Hall was a member of the First Christian Church in Cassville, Phi Mu Sorority, Silver Leaf Benefit Club and the Motion Picture Pioneers of America. He moved to Cassville 22 years ago and attended the Church of Christ. He married Virginia Lee Grigsby on April 4, 1945, in Crown Point, Indiana, and she preceded him in death December 10, 1983. Research Note: He was a druggist. Father unknown, mother was Elizabeth Albright. His wife was Dora Ellen Campbell. Lester B. Hanes was the informant. The stone has no dates on it. J. B. Hanes, age 29, married Dora Campbell, age 17, on June 26, 1888 in Polk Co., AR. Both were from Dallas, Polk Co., AR. Son of Matthew M. Hanes and Elizabeth K. Allbright, married on Oct. 3, 1847 in Hall Co., GA. - Cassville Democrat, Nov. 12, 1927 - J. B. Hanes of Cassville, passed away at the home of his son, Lester in this city, at about 10:30 o'clock, Thursday morning, following an illness extending over the past several weeks. For the past year, his health has been declining but he was able to be up and attend to his duties at the Owl Drug Store, until about one month go, when his condition got more serious and he was taken to a Springfield hospital. After remaining at the hospital a few days he returned to his home here and in a short time made another trip to the hospital at which time he under-went an operation. The operation was successful but his condition was such that he could live but a few days. His death was caused by a bladder and kidney ailment. Mr. Hanes was born in Hall county, Georgia, near Gainesville, Sept. 13, 1858, and was 69 years old. He first came to Barry county thirty years ago and engaged in the grocery business in Cassville. Going from here to Mena, Ark., where he engaged in the drug business for two years, he again returned to this city and again engaged in the drug business where he remained every since, except a few months that he spent in California. For some years he was in business for himself, later associating himself in the business with Dr. D. L. Mitchell. Since that time he has been connected with the Owl Drug Co., here. He leaves one son, Lester of Cassville, and one daughter, Mrs. George Bierman of Los Angeles, Calif., to mourn his passing and a host of friends. His good son attended him during his sickness and death. Mrs. Bierman was on her way from her home here and did not learn of her father's death until her arrival here. Impressive funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon after which the remains were laid to rest in the Oak Hill cemetery under direction of Rorine's Funeral Service. He was a member of the Masonic lodge and Masonic services were conducted at the grave. The deceased was a man that always attended to his won affairs and had made many friends during the many years he faithfully served the people of this section. He was a man that always stood for right and his dealings at all times were honorable and straight. Many beautiful floral offerings were received by the family from friends of the deceased. The boys are all well clothed and fed. They have good tents, plenty of bedding, a good stove and plenty of food. I was with the boys from Saturday night until Monday morning and fared just as they did and I am well satisfied with the treatment they get. The officers treat the boys just as a father. The boys are always glad to receive the DEMOCRAT and say it is like getting a letter from home. With best wishes to the boys, I am J. B. Cooper of near Cassville, were held at 2:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Culver chapel. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Hankins was the widow of the late W. S. Hankins and had resided in the Cassville area all her life. Besides her daughter, she leaves a son, Marshall Hankins of Cassville, a brother, Albert Pilant of Cassville, nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. - Note on obit reads that the cemetery record by Joan Kunkel has her birth date as Jan. 12, 1860. Her death certificate has her birth date as Dec. 12, 1860. The death certificate reads that she was a daughter of Henderson Pilant and Martha Methvin. She was widowed twice. W. S. Hankins northeast of Cassville. Judge Hankins is a practicing attorney. He lived here for a time after the close of the Civil War and recalls much of Cassville's history during those days. - Cassville Republican, Jan. 27, 1938 - W.S. Hankins of The Oak Ridge Community Passed Away Monday: Funeral Services for Mr. Hankins were held Wednesday afternoon at Oak Ridge church, and burial made in the Oak Hill cemetery at Cassville, Horine-Culver undertakers in charge. The services were conducted by Rev. J. B. Ansley of Springfield. William S. Hankins was a son of the late Thomas Hankins and was born in Corsicana August 26, 1865. He was a life-long citizen of this county. He had a good memory and knew more Barry county history during the pass sixty years than most any other man in the county. The greater part of his life had been spent in the community about Cassville. Mr. Hankins was a public spirited citizen and a man of earnest religious convictions. For twenty-five years he served a school board member, and for a number of years had been a commissioner of the Flat Creek township special road district. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Marshall and Luther; and one daughter, Mrs. James Cooper, all of this community; and one brother, Judge M. M. Hankins of Texas. - Another Obit - January 1938 - William Sherman Hankins was born August 26, 1865; passed from this life January 24, 1938, at the age of 72 years, 5 months and 28 days. He was the son of Thomas R. and Martha J. Hankins. He and Annie Black were united in marriage in 1886. To this union three children were born: Mrs. Blanche Cooper, Marshall Hankins and Truman Hankins, of Cassville, all of whom survive him. Mr. Hankins was born and reared in this county, most of his life being spent in the Oak Ridge Community. For sixteen years he was secretary Treasurer of the Federal Land Bank of St. Louis, for Barry County. He had served as a member on the school board for twenty five years, and was a commissioner of the Flat Creek Special Road District for nine years. He was a member of the re-organized Church of Latter Day Saints, for 45 years, during which time he lived a consistent Christian life. Twice within ten days was Mr. Harbert and children called to mourn the loss of a loved one - first the wife and mother and next the daughter and sister. Nettie was born in Barry County, Jan. 7, 1874. At the age of 15 she joined the Christian Church, for which her mother had been a member for some 25 or 30 years. Believing that death was near, she called for friends and requested to sing and pray for her. Her selections, Am I a Soldier of the Cross, I will Arise and go to Jesus, I am going Home to Die no More, and Amazing Grace, were rendered between which she confessed to wrong doing and asked forgiveness of all. She talked at length and asked all to meet her in heaven. She died at 4 p.m. assured that she would rest in peace. The remains were interred by her mother's side in the Cassville cemetery, Monday, where as she requested "Fathers Will You Meet Me," was sung and prayer offered by Rev. R. G. Mitchell. He came to Barry county in the year 1881 and settled at Mineral Springs. In 1884 he was elected judge of probate court to serve an unexpired term caused by the death of Judge Holt. He made a good record as a public official, conducting the business of the office of the best interest of the people whom he served. About the year 1893 he moved to Cassville and was a citizen of our town until the latter 90's when he went to Wakeman to reside with his daughter. He was a veteran of the Civil War, being a member of eh 166th Ohio voluntary Infantry. His wife having proceeded him several years, he was survived by a son and daughter, G. E. Harris of Vinita, Okla., who at one time was editor of the REPUBLICAN and Mrs. J. J. McMann of Ohio. For a number of years he had been a member of the M. E. Church and was a faithful Christian worker. The body was embalmed and shipped to Cassville Tuesday night, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. J. J. McMann. The funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. SSW: Mary J. - Research Note: Son of Andrew Harris and Rebecca Harrison. - Cassville Republican, Mar. 26, 1953 - FORMER OWNER OF REPUBLICAN DIES AT ST. JOE: George E. Harris, former owner and editor of the Cassville Republican from 1888 to 1900, died at his home in St. Joseph Monday where he had been living in retirement for the past few years. Mr. Harris was 91 years of age. For several years prior to 1888 Mr. Harris lived in the Mineral Springs community and was at one time a school teacher there. He purchased the Republican in 1888 from J. B. W. Bennington, father of Fred Bennington who is presently employed at the Republican and who worked for Mr. Harris when he owned the paper. In 1900 Mr. Harris sold the Republican to John M. Grimes who later served as State Senator from this district and who is now engaged in the publishing and banking business in Osceola, Iowa. In 1910 Senator Grimes sold the paper to E. N. Medor who retained ownership until 1949. Upon leaving here Mr. Harris went to Vinita, Okla., where he engaged in the mercantile business with the late Shade Wallen former Cassville man. He later owned a newspaper in Montana and upon selling it went back to the mercantile business. Burial services were conducted here Wednesday afternoon at the Oak Hill cemetery with Purdy Odd Fellows Lodge in charge. Mr. Harris had been a member of that order for more that 60 years. The funeral was held in St. Joseph earlier. He is survived by one son, Ross Harris, an Omaha Neb., business man. Research Note: Sadly, Conner drowned in Flat Creek while swimming with friends. He was son of Stephen Robert and Crystal (Slater) Harrison. Conner was a student at Cassville and had just completed the third grade. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cassville. Wrestling, playing video games, football and riding his bike were some of his favorite pastimes. He wanted to be in the Navy when he grew up. Surviving are his grandmother, Iris Slater of Cassville who he lived with since he was one month old. - Cassville Democrat, May 27, 2016 - 8-year-old drowns in Flat Creek - MO State Highway Patrol says Conner Harrison was swimming about 1 pm Friday in Flat Creek when he disappeared under water. According to Barry County Sheriff Epperly, Conner was swimming with 2 other boys in Flat Creek near Farm Road 2140 and Highway Y. "The other boys hadn't seen [Harrison] for a while, so they ran to a house that they knew and called 911," Epperly said. When Rescuers arrived on the scene, Harrison was found face down in the water. After rushing to get Harrison out of the water, they attempted CPR, but resuscitation efforts failed. Harrison was then transported to Cassville hospital, where doctors worked for 45 minutes to revive him. He was pronounced dead at the hospital Friday afternoon. Research Note: According to Culver's Funeral Home records his father was Leonard "Len" Hawk and his mother Osa E. Pruitt, both born in MO, and he was married. Marcell Hawk, was his wife's name. He died in a car accident and was a truck driver. His address was Joplin, MO, and his funeral was held at the Cassville Baptist Church. Lavern Hawk, age 22, married Marcell Green, age 18, on Nov. 21, 1940 in Mt. Vernon, Lawrence Co., MO. - Lubbock Evening Avalanche, Feb. 8, 1949 - Joplin, MO: Two men were killed and two others injured, one seriously, in the collision of a huge transport truck and a motor car on U. S. Hwy. 66 at Military Crossing, five miles west of here, early today. The dead were identified by the state highway patrol as Glenn Holden, about 30, of Quapaw, OK, and Alvin L. Hawk, 32, of Joplin, MO. Both were riding in the transport loaded with four new automobiles. The transport overturned, spilling the vehicles and pinning the two occupants under the wreckage. Rescuers required more than three hours to remove the crushed bodies. Occupants of the passenger car were Richard Endicott of Joplin, the driver, and Raymond R. Bassett, Joplin, only slightly injured, was taken to Galena, KS, where he is being held in the city jail. Bassett, seriously injured, was rushed to St. John's hospital in Joplin. The state patrol said Endicott was going north, about to enter the intersection when the brakes on his car failed. He moved into the highway and Hawk, driving the transport, swerved to avoid the crash. The vehicles collided and the transport overturned. "We didn't know for some time that there was more than one person in the truck," a patrol spokesman said. "The wreckage was that bad." Hawk, father of Arthur, gave consent. Lucy Burks, mother of Alta, gave consent. - March 11, 1915, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Arthur Hawk, engineer on the C. and W. Railroad and a son of J. W. Hawk of near town, shot and killed his wife, Alta Hawk; and immediately thereafter committed suicide, Tuesday night about 9:30 o'clock on a back street between their residence of J. J. Edens and J. H. Baird, in the south part of town. The double crime was committed shortly after the closing of the moving picture show at which entertainment both attended separately. She left the show alone and he followed overtaking her, it is thought, about where the incident occurred. Particulars concerning the immediate causes which led to the tragedy cannot be had as but the two were present and neither can tell the tale. However, it is known that trouble between them dates back several months. Some days ago a difficulty arose and she left his home and began to make her home in the J. C. Barcus property to which place she was going when the sad affair occurred. Before the horrible tragedy became known to but few, an inquest under the auspices of Justice of the Peace H. P. Sons, had been held. The following persons composed the jury that Arthur Hawk and his wife, Alta Hawk, had come to their deaths from three pistol shots fired by himself: Charles Ray, David Dingler, H. S. Montgomery, Carey Henry, W. M. Irwin and F. A. Meador. Witnesses, A. L. Brown, T. S. Frost, John Ray and Dr. D. L. Mitchell, gave testimony upon which the above verdict was reached by the jury. Mr. Brown testified that while he and Mrs. Brown were passing his father's home on Gravel Street in going home from the picture show he heard three pistol shots, the first two in immediate succession and third one about a minute and a half later. John Ray stated that while he and his wife were at that time near Bon Manley's residence he heard three shots and they were discharged at the intervals given by Mr. Brown. These parties in reaching the T. S. Frost home learned from Mr. Frost that he heard at the time of the shooting some say, "Oh, My God". Mr. Frost and Mr. Brown decided to go in the direction where the shots were fired and make and investigation. In leaving Mr. Frost's home they went east to the street on which the Presbyterian Church is located and then went north to where the back street between the residence of J. J. Edens and J. H. Baird, leads west to Gravel street, and in going about twenty steps on the street they found their lifeless bodies laying beside the road. Mr. Turner, who lives near the scene, testified that he heard from his home three shots at about the same intervals as stated by the other witnesses but heard no talking. Dr. D. L. Mitchell after examining the bodies testified that the death of Alta Hawk was due to a pistol shot, the bullet having entered at the base of the brain on the right side of her head and ranged to the back part of the left eye. It was later learned that she received a bullet wound in her body. He also found that the death of Arthur Hawk was caused by a pistol shot, the bullet taking effect in his mouth and that both deaths came by his volition. The revolver was a 38 caliber and was found grasped in his right hand. Upon examination there was found one snapped shell. Its position in the magazine of the gun showed. It was the first one snapped but failed to fire, and three freshly emptied shells. This evidence is in favor of the three shots as heard by the witnesses. Her body was found lying face upward. His body was nearby with his head resting on her breast. Arthur Hawk was 29 years of age and lived in the vicinity of Cassville all his life. He was an industrious young man and was well liked. Besides a father he leaves a brother, a half-brother, and two sisters, Lennie, E. P. and Mrs. Zula James and Nora Hawk, all residing and about Cassville. Alta Hawk was a daughter of the late William and Lucy Burks and was 28 years of age. She was born and reared in Cassville where she enjoyed a large acquaintance. She is survived by a brother, two sisters and a half-sister. They are Oley Burks, Mrs. Fred Bennington and Ora Burks of this city and Mrs. Charles Butler of Tulsa, Okla. They were united in marriage in 1903. To this union three children were born, one of whom, a son five years old, survive. - According to his death certificate he was widowed and a railroad engineer. Hawk died at his home north of Cassville at 5:30 Wednesday morning, Nov. 9, of paralysis, at the age of 63 years. Monday he was in Cassville feeling as well as he had for sometime, although he had been in bad health for the past two or three years. Tuesday night his family noticed nothing unusual in his condition. At 4: 30 Wed. morning he was awake and made no complaint. At 5:30 Mrs. Hawk discovered that something was wrong and called to other members of the family but he passed away before anything could be done for him. He had had two strokes of paralysis during the last two or three years and it is believed that he had the third stroke Wed. morning. Funeral arrangements will not be made until other members of the family are heard from. Byron J. Hawk was the oldest child of the late William and Roby Hawk, pioneer citizens of Cassville. He was born and reared here and for years was engaged in the grocery business. He was a man of strict integrity, an honorable and upright citizen enjoying the respect of everybody who knew him. He married in 1857 to Elizabeth Porter, daughter of the late Rev. G. K. Porter, who died June 9, 1878 and in 1881 he married Miss Adaline Graston, who died Aug 16, 1890. Hawk, was born in Hardin County, Illinois, March 9, 1868 and passed away at El Dorado, Ark., at the age of 77 years, four months and 15 days. Mrs. Hawk came here when a young girl and made many friends in the community where she lived so long and was well known. She was a mother of seven children, two of whom, Walter G., and Mrs. Roby Hutchens, preceded her in death. The survivors are: Mrs. Gleta M. Arnold, and Glenn R. Hawk of Cassville; Mrs. Fredia G. Reynolds, El Dorado, Ark., Omi C. Hawk, Homer La.; and Ira W. Hawk, Okmulgee, Okla., together with 10 grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Dora Spain lives in Los Angeles, Calif. Funeral services were conducted at the Koon Funeral Chapel by the Revs. C. I. Kenney and Charles VanZandt, Saturday. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery. Hawk married Roby Weekly on Sept. 23, 1856 in Barry Co., MO. - Cassville Democrat, September 28, 1907 - Celebrate Their Golden Wedding: William Calhoun Hawk and Roby Elizabeth (Weekly) Hawk - September 23, 1857, William Calhoun Hawk and Miss Roby Elizabeth Weekly were united in marriage in Cassville, MO, by Geo. K. Porter, a well known and highly respected divine of the Christian Church of near this city, for better or for worse. Those fifty years have come and gone, but with them anxieties and responsibilities came; the raising of a family was assumed, the greatest in this life, yet they have succeeded well, never having had a death in a family of ten children. All have grown to man and womanhood and all but two reside in this vicinity. William Calhoun Hawk was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hawk. John Hawk was a native of Pennsylvania, and Mrs. Hawk of Tennessee, and they moved to Barry County, MO, in 1840 and lived two years at Washburn and afterwards moved to Cassville, and with them came their sons, Jacob W., of near this city, William C., of this city, and Gee Hawk now deceased. William C. Hawk was born in Warren County, Tenn., Oct. 6, 1832 and lived in McMinnville, Tenn., when his mother died. In his younger days, Mr. Hawk was an overland stage driver, and drove from Cassville, MO, to Fayetteville, Ark., and from Cassville to James McCallah's, the old state stand, 23 miles southwest of Springfield. In 1853, he with the Edmondson's, Dr. Adams and others from Arkansas started to California, and went the southern route up the Arkansas River valley by the way of Salt Lake City, where they spent the winter. In the spring of 1854, they started for the Golden State. They had several hundred head of cattle, and before starting they divided up the cattle, some going one route, and the others another. On arriving in California, Mr. Hawk stopped at the mines near Foreman's Ranch, where he remained for a time, and then went to Cache Creek county where he remained until 1855, when he returned to Cassville, where he has since resided. During the Civil War he served in Co. G. 15th MO Reg. of Cavalry. He established the first blacksmith shop in Cassville, after the war, and followed that occupation for many years, until age crept upon him and forced him to quit. He now lives at his home in this city, taking life quietly and easy, ever ready to play a practical joke on some friend, or spin a good yarn, backed up by a good sized pipe, of hill side navy. Mrs. Roby Elizabeth (Weekly) Hawk was an orphan girl, both her parents having lived and died in St. Louis, leaving her at a tender age, to care for herself. She was born in the city of St. Louis, on July 4, 1843 and when 10 years old "Buck" Woods, now deceased, a prominent merchant of this city at that day and time, was in St. Louis, and induced her come home with him, which she did, and a few years later was married to Mr. Hawk. She is of German parentage and remembers to have crossed the ocean twice while a child. Mrs. Hawk established the first exclusive millinery store in Barry County, and for about thirty years, she has continued in this line of business, increasing her business from year to year, until she sells her goods to patrons far and near. She has a wonderful supply of energy, which she applies to her business, that has caused her to make a success of it. This family can be thankful for one thing, if nothing more, and that is, they have never lost a single child. Their children are: B. J. Hawk and family, have 6 children living and one dead. One daughter married, Mrs. Urt Hutchens and they have two children, making Byron grandfather twice. Mrs. Dora Talbert and two daughters. William Sterling Hawk has three daughters. Carlee Hawk is single, but would like to be married. Charles Gee Hawk of near town, has one daughter. Mrs. Buna Scott of Alluwee, I. T., has two sons and two daughters. Robert Pharis Hawk of Monett has one son living and one son and daughter dead. Mrs. Mae Dow and family of Pierce city, has one daughter. Mrs. Grace Thompson of this city. Cleo Hawk, the baby of the family, is now of marriageable age, and acts sometimes just like he would marry - if there was he had a chance. At 12 pm, dinner was announced and before entering the dinning room a small bell, suspended by yellow ribbon - commemorative of the occasion was presented to each guest. At the table a vacant chair was left between Mr. and Mrs. Hawk, but the vacancy was soon filled by Love as the Rev. E. W. Love, after a few appropriate remarks and prayer, filled up the vacancy, and the business of this very pleasant occasion as well attended to, as there was a bountiful supply of good things to eat. Those present were: J. W. Hawk, a brother and daughter, Miss Nora of near this city. Drury Wilkerson and wife of Monett, M. Horine and wife, M. C. Messer, wife and sister, Miss Tiny Arch Hessee and wife, Dr. Thiele and wife, Rev. E. W. Love and wife, P. E. Horine and wife, Dr. Mitchell and family, Mrs. Jas. Henley, and Chas. Ray, wife and daughter, Miss Bessie, of this city, and W. J. Mills, Frisco Ticket Agent of Monett. All the children of Mr. and Mrs. Hawk were present, excepting Mrs. Dora Talbert and daughters who are visiting relatives in Texas, having arranged for the trip, before arrangements had been made for the Golden Wedding Anniversary. Hawk of Cassville, MO was the informant. - Cassville Republican, July 20, 1916 - One by one the old pioneer citizens of Barry County pass to their reward in the great beyond. Every year for the past decade has marked the passing of some old citizen who helped to blaze the way to the present age of progress and modern civilization. Thursday morning July 13, 1916 saw the passing of one more old pioneer, a citizen who had lived in Cassville practically all the time from the date the town was laid out until the present time. With the passing of William C. Hawk Cassville and Barry County lost a man who was familiar with every year of their history for more than 70 years. He was born in McMinnville, Warren County, Tenn., Oct. 6, 1833. His father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. John Hawk moved from Tennessee to what was then called the "West" and located at Keetsville, the old name of Washburn, about the year of 1839. When Cassville was laid out in 1845 the family moved here and this has been the family home since that time. With the exception of a short time spent in California in the Fifties, Mr. Hawk had lived in Cassville very since the town was laid out. He was a blacksmith and operated a shop here for many years. During the stage coach days he drove on route between Springfield and Fayetteville, Ark. During the Civil War he served as a soldier in Company G of the 154th Mo. Cavalry. William C. Hawk and Miss Roba Weekly were united in marriage in 1856. They reared a large family. The following children are living: Byron J., Mrs. Dora Talbert, Wm. S., Carlee, Chas., Robert and Cleo and Mrs. Grace Thompson of Cassville; Mrs. Buna Scott of Alluwee, Okla., and Mrs. J. W. Dow of Washington, D.C., all of whom were present at their father's death. Funeral services were held at the family home Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock conducted by Eld J. S. McQueen and Rev. J. T. Brattin. The business houses were closed during the funeral in honor of his memory. A large crowd assembled to pay their last respects to the deceased. Many beautiful flora emblems were sent. William C. SSW: Clara L. -Research Note: Rev. Henderson was very active in his community serving as County Treasurer, Recorder of Deeds and Chamber of Commerce member. He married Clara LeMay (Brattin) on Sept. 9, 1907. According to Culver's Funeral Home Records by Ted Roller, he was a son of Francis Marion Henderson and Martha Emaline Fly. He was a minister and his closest relative was Wilma Hawk. - Cassville Republican, January, 1968 - Calvin Emory Henderson, son of Francis Marion and Emaline (Fly) Henderson, was born April 4, 1884 at Purdy, Mo. He died Jan. 3, 1968 at South Barry County Hospital following a brief illness. He was married Sept. 9, 1906 to Clara LeMay Brattin, who preceded him in death Jan. 26, 1958. They were the parents of five children, all of whom survive. They are: Mrs. Ruth Stephens, Burbank, Calif., Mrs. Wilma Hawk, Cassville, Mrs. Marian Casper, Purdy, Carl Henderson, Kirkwood, MO and Charles Henderson, Williamsville, Ill. Also surviving is one stepson, Wayne Twilligear, Cahokia, Ill., one sister, Mrs. Mary Edwards, Van Nuys, Calif. and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was married on Dec. 22, 1961 to Marion (Fletcher) Twilligear, who also survives. He taught in the public schools of Barry County for 20 years, served one term as Recorder of Deeds of Barry County and two terms as Treasurer of Barry County. He was ordained to the ministry in 1924 in the Methodist Protestant Church. He was president of the Methodist Protestant Conference in Barry and adjoining counties. At the time of death, he was a member of the New Salem Methodist Church. Although retired, he continued to serve as supply pastor when called and was regular pastor at the Gunter Methodist Church. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, Jan. 6, 1968, at 2:00 p.m. in the Culver Chapel, Cassville, Mo. Rev. Perry Rowland and Rev. H. E. Hunter officiated. Bro. and Mrs. Bert Ward sang three songs, "Beyond," a song composed by Rev. Henderson, "The Ninety and Nine" and "Jesus Will Carry Me Over the River." Active in civic affairs, taught school as a young woman, respected by her community. She married Calvin Emory Henderson, Sept 9, 1906 in Cassville. The maternal grandmother of Linda McCormick. - Cassville Democrat, January, 1958 - Mrs. Clara Brattin Henderson, one of Barry County's best and most respected women, died in her sleep Sunday morning at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Willard Casper, living west of Purdy. When her mother did not awaken Sunday morning Mrs. Casper sent her daughter to rouse her and she was told she could not. Mrs. Henderson went to the Casper home Saturday afternoon to spend the weekend with the Casper family. She was a daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. J. T. Brattin and was born on February 4, 1886, and would have been 72 years of age on that date. She was a consistent and devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Cassville through the years, and was known for her friendly manner and sweet disposition and always showed keen interest in other people. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother was always shown whenever the occasion presented. She will be sadly missed in the community by all. Survivors are her husband, Rev. Calvin E. Henderson; two sons, Carl Henderson of Kirkwood, Mo., and Charles Henderson of Williamsville, Ill.; three daughters, Mrs. Albert Stephens, Burbank, Calif., Mrs. Jakie Hawk of Cassville and Mrs. Casper at whose home she passed away, 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Rev. and Mrs. Henderson were united in marriage on September 9, 1906, and have enjoyed a happy and devoted married life through the years. In addition to membership in the Baptist Church, she was an active member of the Cassville Garden and Unity Clubs. When a young woman she was a school teacher. Rev. Henderson was on his way home from a visit to an uncle in Texas and was notified of the bad news on his arrival in Monett. Funeral services are being conducted this Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Culver Funeral Home with the Rev. H. W. Chaney and Rev. Charles Siler officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery. For many years she had resided in this city and enjoyed the respect of everybody who knew her. In early life she united with the M. E. church and died in that faith. Research Note: His death certificate reads that his father was named John Henry Hessee, born NC, and his mother was Rebecca Ward, born NC. He was married, a farmer, and age 78 years, 11 months and 26 days old at the time of his death. He was married to Ida Abernathy, daughter of Marcus Lee and Nancy J. (Sims) Abernathy. - June 8, 1916, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Personal and Local News: Mrs. T. H. Hickman of Sarcoxie is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bedford Hessee. - July 31, 1920, Cassville Democrat - The cup of joy of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Hessee residing 1 mile west of this city, run over Saturday and Sunday, because of a visit from all their children, from near and far, who came to the parental roof to make glad the hearts of their parents. They all rejoiced to be at home once more, all at the same time and no one knows how the hearts of their parents throbbed with joy, on account of their presence. Even the little grandchildren felt the pleasures of the occasion and enjoyed the day. Those present were: Guy Hessee and family of Kansas City, Fred Hessee of Republic, Mrs. Eula Hankins and little son of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Elmer Hessee and son of Verdon, Neb., Mrs. Lela Hickman of Lincoln, Benton County, Geo. Irwin and family of Sarcoxie, Earl Hessee and family of Galena, Kan., E. C. Hessee and wife of Sarcoxie, Arch Hessee, and Mr. and Mrs. Harris Hudson and Chas. Ray and wife were present on this happy occasion and we all shined fort that splendid diner spread in the yard on a long table. It was a glad day all round. We hope they have many more such occasions. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, March 28, 1918 - J. B. Hessee west of town was thrown from his buggy, dragged for some distance and badly injured about the face, head and hands Wednesday forenoon while driving on the Cassville and Exeter road about two miles west of town. He was found in an unconscious condition by R. L. Stubblefield who called Dr. S. W. Chandler. He was brought to town and an examination disclosed bad flesh wounds all over his face, nose, chin and on the back part of his head. His hands also had the flesh badly lacerated. He was driving in a single buggy. The shafts came down and frightened the horse. He was dragged over the road for quite a distance. Higganbotham and Rebecca Gordon. - February 1, 1912, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Higganbotham of this city celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of their marriage, Monday, Jan. 29. They were married Jan. 29, 1852 in Claremont, Ill. They are the parents of seven children, six of whom are living. They have 37 grand children and 14 great grand children. Mr. Higganbotham is 82 and Mrs. Higganbotham will be 76 years old in April. They are both enjoying the best of health for old people and would not be taken to be nearly so old as they are. Mr. Higganbotham has an excellent memory and recalls easily the close of the Black Hawk War and the early Indian wars of the thirties. He remembers well the incidents of the Mexican war and served as a soldier in the Civil War. He talks reminiscently of the early history of this part of the United states. His family was a close neighbor to the Lincoln family in Illinois and he states that Abraham Lincoln's father was buried in the Higganbotham family Cemetery. - October 8, 1914, Thursday, Cassville Republican - C. W. Higganbotham is in receipt of a letter announcing the death of his brother, J. F. Higganbotham, at Salem, Illinois, Saturday. The deceased was the only living brother of Mr. Higganbotham and was 55 years of age. He first married Nannie Gurley on Dec. 24, 1886. Not positive about the next two wives. James Z. Higgs married S. E. Ray on July 10, 1909 in Washita Co., OK. James Z. Higgs, age 52 married Lavancha Williamson, age 48, on Aug. 15, 1915 in Barry Co., MO. - Cassville Democrat, April 4, 1930 - PNEUMONIA FATAL TO JOHN Z. HIGGS: Barry county lost two of its prominent and high standing citizens last Friday, and when Dr. Henson died at his home at Golden, and J. Z. Higgs died at Seminole, Okla. J. Z. Higgs who died at Seminole was a son of the late Uncle Kelly Higgs, and was born and raised in this county on the old Higgs homeplace, west of Butterfield. He was 68 years old. James Z. Higgs, oldest son of the late J. K. (Uncle Kelly), and Mary Jane Higgs was born in Barry county, Jan. 12, 1863. Died at the home of his son Warren, at Seminole, Okla., March 29, 1930. Age 67 years, two months and 17 days. He and Miss Nannie Gurley were married Dec. 24, 1886. To this union six children were born, who are: Mrs. Ada Curron, 914 East Metropolitan Ave. Kansas City, Kan; Etta Elizabeth Higgs dying in infancy, Walter Higgs, Bristow, Ok.; Warren Higgs, Seminole, Okla; Mrs. Verta Gillingham, 812 East Capital St. Jefferson City, Mo., and Miss Daisy Higgs dying in 1925. He also survived by three brothers, Will, Harve and John also one sister, Mrs. Betty Duncan, of Wheaton, Mo., and many other relatives and friends. He was converted Nov. 18, 1900 and united with the Baptist church of which he remains a member until death. The remains were shipped to Cassville, where funeral services were held at the Horine Funeral Home, on Sunday afternoon, March 30, by Chas. Vanzandt. A quartet composed of Jack Hisey, Clinton Blythe, and Mrs. Glen Pearl and Mrs. Mary Ray, rendered appropriate vocal sections. The following acted as pallbearers. Fred Meador, C. C. Chandler, Chas. Bryant, Horace Stacy, Jess Preddy and Ashley Mixon. Burial in the Cassville cemetery, under the direction of the Horine Funeral Service. Mr. Higgs was a splendid citizen and was well and favorably known throughout this section. He was an honest, hard working man and had many friends. - Nancy burned to death on a farm in the White River Community. She was alone at the time and her body was found in the yard where she had run. Nancy Emeline Gurley was born Mar. 12, 1870, died Apr. 11, 1906. Daughter of John Wesley Gurley and Mary Anne Combs. - Jay Trace's notes on location of her stone: This evidently is the Higgs grave in Shell Knob that the MoBarry site has sought a picture of for some years. I just happened upon it today. To get there, travel south on Hwy. 39 to Shell Knob. Turn right on Farm Road 1230. Go less than 5 miles into Turkey Mountain Estates. If you come to a T at Edgewater Street, you've gone to far. As you enter Turkey Mountain Estates, 1230 becomes Airport Road. Alongside that road is a small, earthen airstrip. The stone is on the opposite edge of that airstrip, all alone. I didn't find any other stones around. He also worked as an independent contractor, and in 2009, he earned his real estate license, and was employed as a realtor with Four Seasons Realty up until the time of his death.
