SSW: Eleanor - Inscription: "Married Dec. 26, 1942" - Research Note: He was born in 1920, in a farmhouse just about a mile from Washburn, Missouri. His parents were Zoe (Windes) Babb and Emmett Babb. His father died when he was seven, and the family home burned down when he was about twelve. B. F. graduated from high school in Washburn, and attended college for two years in Springfield and Dodge City. He taught school for a year at the old Quaker School House before going to work for Boeing in Wichita. There he met and married Eleanor Tyrrell in 1942, and was inducted into the Marine Corps in 1943. He made beach landings under fire in the Pacific Theater at Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa. At the conclusion of the war, all of his and Eleanor's possessions burned in a warehouse fire in Wichita. He returned to Barry County, where he and Eleanor started from scratch and began a family. B. F. and his sister owned the old Cassville Truck Line until 1960. SSW: Nola Lasiter - Inscription: "Married Aug. 20, 1926" - Research Note: According to the Culver Funeral Home records, published by Ted Roller, Bernard Allen Babb was a son of Marion Bascom Babb and his wife Ella Jane Smith. He died from the effects of pneumonia in the VA Hospital in Fayetteville, AR, and had lived in the Cassville area all of his life. He was a law officer and his wife was named Nola (Lasiter) Babb. He lived at 1106 Fair St., Cassville, MO and was 69 years old at the time of his death. - December 22, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Bascom Babb of this city received a letter from his son Bernard, who is in France, having gone over with first expedition Monday and said he was all right. That they were drilling very well. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, February 6, 1919 - M. B. Babb received a letter Friday from his son, Bernard, saying that he was in Germany with the army of occupation. He wrote that John Babb is still in France. - Cassville Republican, Aug. 7, 1919 - Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Babb received a telegram Tuesday from their son, Bernard, saying that he had landed safely in New York. Bernard and his brother, John, are in the Marines, having voluntarily enlisted in the spring 1917. Research Note: Cassville Republican, July 12, 1945 - M. B. Babb, known generally over the county as Bascomb Babb, one of Barry county's pioneer citizens passes away suddenly from a heart attack about 9:30 o'clock Thursday night, July 5th. Death came while Mr. Babb was seated on a divan in the living room of his home on North Main street. He had eaten supper as usual and was sitting alone. His son, Bernard had gone down Flat creek fishing and Mrs. Bernard Babb was busy about her housework. When she entered the living room she found his father sitting with his head thrown back in a manner that frightened her. She called Wayne Ennis and wife and Mrs. John Hancock who live next door to come over and they found that his body was lifeless. For several months his condition had been such that his family were expecting that the end might come soon. Mr. Babb was a native of Tennessee. He was born in Hancock county, Tenn., February 11, 1866. He was a son of the late Rev. Samuel Babb and wife. The family moved to Barry county when M. B. was only 11 years old. Most of the time since his home had been in Cassville. He had served as Constable of Flat Creek township, as City Marshal of Cassville, as Deputy Sheriff under the late Geo. M. Goodnight, and later under B. F. Lamar, and for short periods under other Sheriff's Barry county. He made a good officer being fearless and always using good judgment in the discharge of his official duties. For a number of years he was a carpenter. When the rural mail system was established at the Cassville post office in April 1903. Mr. Babb qualified and became one of the first carriers. He continued in that service for more than thirty years, when he retired. When a young man he was known as Barry county's tallest citizen. His measurement was 6 feet 7 inches in his sock feet. He was the last member of the family of his father and mother to pass away. By temperament he was genial and friendly with everybody, always looking upon the bright side of life's picture at the same time he was a man of strong convictions and was always frank in expressing them. The family prepared the following obituary sketch: Marion Bascomb Babb was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Phillips) Babb (others say she was Elizabeth Roberts) and the last of his generation. He was married Oct. 19, 1897 to Miss Ella Jane Smith who passed away four years ago. To them were born seven children three of who died in infancy. Surviving are John of San Francisco, Calif; Mrs. Cecil Newman of Tulsa, Okla.; Bernard of Cassville, and Gene of Monett. He is also survived by five grandchildren; Mrs. Robert Easterly of Carthage, Gene and Jack Newman; Marian and Jack Babb; one brother-in-law, B. B. Hefley, and twelve nephews and nieces. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, July 8, at the Culver Funeral Chapel, conducted by Rev. W. R. Dalton, Pastor of the Methodist church. Burial was in the Oak Hill cemetery. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, Oct. 5, 1893 - John Manley and Bascomb Babb arrived from the Strip, Saturday night, happy in the possession of future homes. A good woman has passed to the rewards beyond the flesh, and beneath the sun parched sod on the tranquil summit of Oak Hill cemetery, in a conqueror's grave, rests the remains of Mrs. Lela Amelia Bailey, wife of Dr. W. T. Bailey. To most of the readers of THE GAZETTE, the long suffering and heroic fortitude of Mrs. Bailey is known beyond the need of further description. Suffice it to say that after more than two years suffering with cancer of the breast, and after more than two months lingering at the threshold of death, she quietly and peacefully gave up the unequal struggle last Monday morning at a little after 9 o'clock. - GROWS WORSE: In the early spring Mrs. Bailey's condition became so critical that she was taken to St. Louis for treatment. But after remaining there for some time under the care of the most expert physicians, it was found that nothing could be done, and, at her request she was brought back to Cassville on the 3rd of July, and since that time she has been growing gradually worse. But, all during her long suffering and in the face of the inevitable, she resigned herself with a heroic fortitude and a Christian like trust that was truly characteristic of her noble life and her strong character. Mrs. Bailey was, before marriage Miss Lela Amelia Johnson, daughter of Mr and Mrs. John T. Johnson of Wheaton. In 1901 she was married to Dr. W. T. Bailey and has lived for the past few years in this city where her labor as a home builder, a church worker and a charitable, Christian woman has be felt by all who knew her or came in contact with her good and noble work. At the time of her death, Mrs. Bailey was just 33 years and 6 months old, and up to the very last she was the picture of beauty and sweet life as is found in queenly womanhood. The funeral services were held at the Christian church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and were conducted by the elder Geo Yarbrough. Interment followed in the Oak Hill cemetery. She is survived by her husband, mother and father, 7 brothers and one sister. She has been at Joplin, where an ex-ray was made and her troubles located, but requires treatment before an operation which she does not favor. Research Note: Son of Andrew Jackson and Agnes Jane "Aggie" (Wallen) Baker. - March 4, 1915, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Another home in this city as been saddened, bowed down with grief and heart strings torn that cannot be healed only by time. A good wife is mourning the passing of her husband, and children are sobbing for the absent father, brothers and sisters are bowed down with sadness, on account of the separation. It is so sad to see young men pass, but it has been so decreed and will continue for all time to come. Death is an unwelcome visitor to every family, yet every family has tasted of its bitterness at sometime and all will continue to. John R. Baker died Thursday evening, Feb. 25, 1915, at his home in this city, of stomach and liver trouble, aged 46 years, 1 month and 19 days. He was the son of the late Mr and Mrs. Andrew J. Baker old and highly respected citizens of near this city, during life and was born Jan. 6, 1869, in Roaring River township, this county, and has lived his entire life in the county. He attended the country schools and the Cassville High School, while the late Prof. Malden was Superintendent, and taught several schools in this county, very successfully. January, 1892, he and Miss Mattie Lowder, a most estimable lady, were married and seven children were born of this marriage, four of whom are living, who are: Rolla, Marie, Robert and Ross. He was a brother of Columbus Baker of Oklahoma, A. J., J. C., Albert and Will Baker of and near this city, Mrs. Harvey Higgs of near Wheaton, and Mrs. Lou Davis of Idaho. For several years he has been in the real estate business in this city. He has many friends who will be very sorry to learn of his death. Funeral services were conducted Friday, Feb. 26, 1915 by Rev. E. W. Love at the Presbyterian Church at 3:00 p.m., where a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends assembled to pay the last respect. He was a member of the Odd Fellows and the Modern Woodmen of America, in which society he carries $1,000, for the benefit of his family. The remains were laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery after the services at the church. - Obit 2: John R. Baker, a well known citizen of the county died at his home in this city, Thursday evening, Feb. 25, 1915 of liver and complication of other troubles. The deceased became suddenly ill a few weeks ago with indigestion which aliments he had for some time been bothered. Following the severe attack an enlargement of the liver developed and together with a weak heart and ailments of the stomach his life was not long to endure. He was a son of the late Andrew and Jane Baker and was born in Roaring River township in this county, Jan. 6, 1960. In early life his parents moved to the Mt. Sinai locality east of town in which community the deceased won the esteem and friendship of a wide acquaintance. After reaching manhood he engaged in the profession of teaching and taught in the rural schools of the county for several years. He later gave up teaching and came to Cassville and accepted a position with the C. and W. Railroad. During the latter part of his life he was engaged in the real estate business. In January 1892, he was united in married to Mattie Lowder. To them were born seven children. He is survived by his wife and four children, Rolla, Marie, Robert, and Rose. He was a brother of C. C. Baker of Oklahoma and A. J., J. C., A. B. and Will Baker of Cassville and Mrs. Tom Davis of Goldburg, Idaho and Mrs. Harve Higgs of near Butterfield. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church Friday afternoon at three o'clock in charge of Revs. T. H. Hickman and E. W. Love in the presence of a large assemblage of people. Music was furnished by a select quartet consisting Mrs. C. H. Hadley, Mrs. E. W. Love, Ross Stuckey and J. W. Hisey. Interment was made in the Oak hill Cemetery with the honors of the orders of I. O. O. F. and M. W. A.. Many members of the two orders marched in the funeral possession. The deceased has many friends over the county who will be dearly grieved to know of this death. He was much devoted to this family and was a friend to everybody. On May 23, 1942, he was united in marriage to Mary Frances Horine, who preceded him in death on March 9, 1999. Two daughters were born to this union. On July 9, 1999, he married Phyllis (Hagood) Norman. Truman grew up in the Mineral Springs area and received his education at Cassville, graduating from Cassville High School. He then attended SMS. During World War II he joined the United States Air Force, serving from 1943 until 1947 as a navigator. For a while he owned and operated The Corner Store, where Willis Insurance is now located. In 1957, Truman entered the banking business, remaining a banker until his retirement in 1980 and then became Chairman of the Freedom Bank Board. He developed Sunset Heights in Cassville. He was the instigator of the Cassville Little League Baseball program, coaching the Blues. He had served as President of the Cassville Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of Church of Christ in Cassville. He started the first sand greens golf course in Cassville and was instrumental in building the present Cassville Golf Course. He was a long-time member of the Cassville Rotary Club and was the oldest Rotarian in Barry County. Barcus, died at her home in this city, Tuesday afternoon, May 21, at 3 o'clock, following an illness of three weeks of a complication of troubles. Elizabeth C. Barcus was born November 24, 1861 in the state of Indiana. When a small girl her parents moved to Missouri and since that time she had lived in St. Clair, Newton and Barry Counties. She was married Feb. 11, 1883 to James James of Newton County. To this marriage one child was born, Lillian Branstetter, wife of C. H. Branstetter of Joplin who attended her mother during her last illness. Mr. James died Aug. 22, 1885. She was married to James Stansberry in Newton County, Apr. 25, 1887. To this marriage one child was born but died at the age of two years. Mr. Stansberry died in 1893. She was married to James Barcus in July 1895. No children were born to this marriage. She had lived in Cassville for about thirty years. She professed faith in Christ many years ago and was a member of the Christian church. Barcus was born Aug. 15, 1846, in Franklin County, Ind., and died of paralysis, age 70 years, 6 months and 5 days. With his parents he moved to Vermillion County Illinois, in 18??. On Feb. 6, 1865, he enlisted in the Union Army, the 44th? Illinois Regiment, and was discharged Jan. 27, 1865 at Dalton, Ga. He was converted and baptized in 1867, at the Bean Creek Baptist Church in Illinois. May 11, 1875 he and Miss Louis Gillespie were married; she died Oct. 18, 1883, leaving six children, four of whom are: Dedlamonica?, Ellis, Martin and Henry. Jan. 1, 1885, he and Sarah E. (Norris) Reams were married at Guide Rock, Nebr., who died Mar. 30, 1895, leaving three children, who are: Morris, Earle and Zenith. On July 27, 1895, he and Elizabeth Brown were married and she survives him. For many years the descendant had resided in this city and enjoyed the respect of everybody. He was a member of the Christian Church of this city and his funeral was conducted Thursday at 3 p.m., by Rev. J. S. Buried at Wichita Park Cemetery. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, April 10, 1919 - W. H. Barcus, one of this county's old and highly respected citizens passed away at his home near this city, Saturday evening, April 5, following an illness of several days, at the age of 78 years. He had been failing in health for sometime and soon after taking to his bed about two weeks ago pneumonia set up and his physician then gave up all hope of his recovery. The funeral services were held from the Baptist church in this city of which he was a member, Tuesday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. Will Ireland, the pastor. Interment was made in Oak Hill cemetery. William Henry Barcus was born in Franklin County, Ind., April 18, 1840. There he grew to manhood. When the Civil War came up he offered his services to the cause of the Union and served until its close, first in the 60th Indiana Infantry, and later in the 8th Iowa Cavalry. He was promoted for his excellent record as a soldier until he became First Lieut. of his company. About thirty years ago he came to this county and located near Seligman. Later he moved to Nebraska but returned to his county some twelve years ago and has lived near Cassville since. He was twice married. Of the first marriage two children were born, one of whom, W. A. Barcus of Blue Hill, Neb., is living. There are six children of the second marriage, all at home. In addition to wife and six children, he leaves four brothers, Warner of Indiana, Leban of Claremore, Okla., Freeman of Washington and Eli of Rockville, Ill, and one sister, Mollie Barcus of Danville, Ind. Warner and Leban Barcus attended the funeral. Mr. Barcus was a splendid man and citizen. He was held in high regard by his neighbors and acquaintances wherever he had lived. As an evidence of his standing and the confidence in his honor and integrity he was elected while living in Nebraska as Judge of the probate court. For many years he had been a consistent member of the Baptist Church. - May 17, 1894, Thursday, Cassville Republican - B. F. Ross received a telegram, Tuesday morning, that W. M. Norris of Guide Rock, Neb., father of Mrs. W. H. Barcus was not expected to live. Owing to their moving to Kansas, she will not go to Guide Rock until after reaching Preston. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, March 14, 1918 - Fred Barcus, little son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Barcus near town, received a bad scalp wound Saturday when a barn door fell upon him. It was at first thought that he was seriously injured but he is now getting along fine. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, April 17, 1919 - John Lutes of Pratt, Kan., who has been visiting his sister, Mrs. W. SSW: Nora - Research Note: Son of Daniel and Lounette Bass. - Cassville Republican, Cassville, June 19, 1913 - Harry Bass passed away at Hugo, Okla., Wednesday morning, June 18, 1913, of Bright's disease Age 33 years. Harry had been in poor health for some time and had resigned his position at Hugo with the Frisco Railroad to regain his former health. Only a few weeks ago he came to Cassville from Springfield where he had been taking treatment in the Frisco hospital. His illness seemed to become more serious and Monday he went to Hugo for treatment but soon fell a victim to his afflictions. Harry Bass was born in Trousdale County, Tennessee, November 14, 1879. When a boy he moved with his mother, Mrs. Lou Bass, to Hinesville, Ark., where they resided until about thirteen years ago when they moved to this county and settled in the Horner locality, southeast of town. At the age of 27 he was married to Miss Nora Smith, who survives him. For the past few years the family has been at Hugo where Harry was an employee of the Frisco. Besides a wife and mother, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Lula Moore, of Hugo, Okla., and brother, Charley, and other relatives of Cassville. Harry was well known in and around Cassville. He was a quite and reserved citizen and ever mindful only of his own affairs. He was well liked and his friends will regret to hear of his death. His body will arrive from Hugo, this morning (Thursday). At the time of going to press the funeral arrangements had not been definitely made. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, June 26, 1913 - The funeral of Harry Bass, who died at Hugo, Okla., Wednesday morning of last week of Bright's disease, was held Thursday afternoon at he Cassville Baptist Church. The services were conducted by Rev. J. Brattin and was attended by a good number of relatives and friends. The pallbearers were a number of Harry's associates employed with the Frisco at Hugo. The casket was covered with wreaths and banquets of beautiful flowers. Besides his wife, mother and sister, those who accompanied his body from Hugo were: R. H. Frances, A. E. Hood, W. F. Morrow, W. Bailey of Hugo and Mr. Hay and wife of Fayetteville, Ark. - Hugo News - Harry Bass Died Wednesday; Well Known Railway Fireman Succumbed to Bright's Disease: Harry Bass, 34 years of age, died at the family residence in the Second ward at 5:50 a. m. Wednesday after a long illness, he having been a sufferer with Bright's disease. Mr. Bass had been a resident of Hugo for the past nine years, during which time he has been employed by the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway company, being a fireman, and more recently an extra engineer. He was married, lived with the wife and his mother on the west side of the city. He also has a brother back at the old family home at Cassville, MO, and a married sister in Hugo. Mr. Bass had been to MO coming home but a little more than a day prior to his demise. The remains were shipped to Cassville Wednesday. They were accompanied by the immediate members of the family and H. O. Babb, a lifetime friend of the deceased. - August 17, 1909, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Harry Bass, wife and mother passed through Cassville last week on their way home from a visit in Kentucky. Bayless which occurred at their home northwest of Cassville, early Monday morning, October 24, following the birth of twin babies, a boy and girl. Mrs. Bayless, apparently was doing nicely in her confinement but soon after the second babe was born she lapsed into unconsciousness, from which she failed to rally. The babes weight 81/2 and 9 pounds, respectively and are doing nicely. Mrs. Bayless was a daughter of Mrs. David Talbert, an old time and highly respected citizen of near Seligman, who resided in this city many years, and was an excellent lady. She was born and raised in this city and was born October 6, 1887. She was a half sister to Chas. Adams of Seligman, and was greatly loved by all her acquaintances. She was married to Will Bayless, Dec. 24, 1908, to which union 5 children were born. She is survived by her grief stricken husband and two daughters, Bernice and Wilma, both of whom are students of the Cassville High school and splendid young ladies. Impressive funeral services were conducted by Rev. Jas Brattin of Grove Okla., Tuesday afternoon at the family home, after which the remains were interred in Oak Hill cemetery in Cassville, under direction of Horine Funeral Service. She was an active and devoted member of the Baptist church and lived an exemplary Christian life. Research Note: Cassville Republican, Cassville, February 8, 1917 - In the passing of John A. Bayless, Sunday another one of the pioneers of Barry County has been called to his reward. John A. Bayless was born in Alabama on June 8, 1840, and at the age of 12 years immigrated to Carroll County, Ark., with his parents. There he grew to manhood and at the age of 21 years was married to Rebecca Chaney, who survives him. To this union were born seven children, five of whom are living. They are Mary P. Messer, Mrs. Elizabeth Reed, G. G. Bayless, Miss Orpha, at home and Will. All living in this vicinity except G. G., who lives at Carterville. In 1864 he moved from Arkansas to Greene County where he lived abut a year from where he moved to Barry County where they have since resided. Early in the war he enlisted in Co. C. 2nd Ark., Cav. and served through the war. He was one of those sturdy pioneers who helped blaze the way that the coming generation might find the country a better build. Mr. Bayless had been in poor health for sometime but had not been bedfast, always eating his meals at the table and Sunday morning got up as usual and ate his breakfast. But about 1 p.m. the summons of the great architect came that he had completed his earthly house and that he must retire from his earthly labors. Funeral services were conducted at the home west of this city by Rev. E. W. Bayless, was placed under arrest Tuesday charged with taking a watch from a show case at Barry Hotel. He sold the watch to a party at the fair grounds. It was the time piece concerning which A. C. Hailey and W. T. Ayers had a law suit a few months ago in the justices court and which suit is now pending on appeal in the circuit court. The watch is valued at $35. Hearing is set for Saturday. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, February 27, 1919 - Wounded Cassville Boy Returns: George Bayless, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. R. Bayless of this city, returned home Saturday night, having received his discharge from the military service. George is still lame from the wound he received in the left lower limb in the battle of Argonne forest. He was also gassed in the same battle. He served with the 89th Division. Since the last of December he had been at Camp Merritt in a hospital for treatment but was sent to Camp Dodge for his discharge. George had some great experiences. He was in France a little over six months and saw some real service. Abednigo Baze married Margaret Hickson/Hixon on July 5, 1863 in Barry Co., MO. - Cassville Republican, Jan. 28, 1915 - Pioneer Citizen Dead: A.P. Baze, an aged and a pioneer citizen of this county, passed peacefully away at his home in Cassville about 9 o'clock on the evening of January 20, 1915 of heart and kidney diseases. He had been confined at his home several weeks and within a few days prior to his death his recovery was not expected by the members of his family and friends. The deceased was born in Tennessee March 3, 1840. In the year 1848, his parents moved to this county and settled at Cassville. He resided here a number of years. He was familiar with the early history of our town and county and was one of the citizens, most of whom have passed away, whose life history makes up a greater part of the history of the county. During the Civil War he labored for the cause of the Union and served in Company E of the First Arkansas Cavalry. After receiving his discharge from services in the war, he returned to this county. He lived several years in Mountain Township. About two years ago he moved to Cassville where he resided until death. He was married to Margaret Hixon. To them were born ten children, seven of whom are living. They are Mrs. Ella Pace, Mrs. Mary J. August, Mrs. Ada Griffith, all of Washington; Mrs. Joseph Jackson, of Monett; H. L., J. T. and P. S. Baze of Cassville. He is also survived by four brothers and four sisters. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church Thursday afternoon in charge of Rev. J. T. Brattin. His body was laid to rest in the Oak Hill Cemetery. In his death, the county has lost one of its oldest and highly respected citizens. He was held in high esteem by his acquaintances and was an excellent citizen. - Donna's Note: Cheryl posted that he was born in 1841. The stone reads that he was born Mar. 7, 1840 the same date that the death certificate has. - His death certificate has the same dates as the stone has. Henry Baze and Jane Paskel, both born TN, were given as his parents names. Bright's Disease was the cause of death. She is survived by another daughter, Mrs. A. N. Pace of Riverside, and a granddaughter, Mrs. Olive Morgan of Whittier. The body is at White-Emerson Funeral Parlors and will be shipped to Monett, Mo., for interment. - Cassville Democrat - Mrs. Margaret Baze, a former old time and well known citizen of this section died last Friday at her home in Whittier, Calif. Accompanied by her daughter, Mrs. Joe Jackson and husband, former Monett citizens, the body arrived in that city Monday night and interment was made in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cassville, Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Baze left several children and many friends to mourn her passing. In Oct. 1966, he retired from the McConnel Air Force Base, Wichita, KS, where he had been civilian personnel officer before going to the Table Rock area. Research Note: The Springdale News (Arkansas), November 3, 1893 - It will be sad news to the many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Beasley in this vicinity to learn of the probable fatal illness of their sweet little daughter, and only child, Mabel. She was taken sick Saturday with membranous croup at her home in Cassville, MO and the skill of physicians and the watchful and tender care of loving parents and friends seems to be unavailing and her death is almost momentarily expected. Mabel has suffered greatly but she bears it uncomplainingly. Her trials are nearly ended, however, and white-winged angels are now hovering at her bed-side, only awaiting the command of the Master to attend the spirit of the sweet little one to its home above. Our sympathy goes out to the grief-stricken parents whose sorrow is almost more than they can bear. LATER: Since the above was put in type, a telegram informs us of Mabel's death which occurred yesterday evening. - The Springdale News (Arkansas), December 1, 1893 - Mary Mabel Beasley, daughter of L. and M. Research Note: According to Culver Funeral Home Records, published by Ted Roller, Frederick was a son of Bailey Bennington and his wife Penny Townsend. He was married and his wife's name was Laura (Lathim) Bennington (second wife) of Cassville, MO and he was age 82 at the time of his death. His closest relative was Mrs. W. S. Hutton and he was a printer. Ira's Note: Frederick Worth Bennington first married Middie Burks a daughter of William Monroe Burks and Lucy Jane (Nickle) Burks. Fred is entitled to a months lay off and we hope that he and family many have a pleasant trip and happy visit with his brother. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, April 4, 1918 - F. W. Bennington received a letter Saturday from his brother, Clarence, from whom he had not heard and whose whereabouts the family had known nothing for ten years. He left Cassville about eighteen years ago. In his letter he asked about some of his childhood friends who have been dead for several years. The letter was written from the Hawaiian Islands. It stated that he had been in the U.S. Army quartermaster's corps since 1914 and is a corporal. - Cassville Republican, Dec. 25, 1919 - F. W. Bennington has received word of the death of his aunt, Mrs. Jennie M. Ragsdale, at Whittier, Calif. Mrs. Ragsdale died December 3, at Whittier. She was a sister of the late J. B. W. Bennington. Lauderdale, Fla., for interment last week started Sunday evening on his return trip. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, Nov. 13, 1919 - The body of J. B. W. Bennington arrived in Cassville Thursday at noon. It was taken to the home of his son, F. W. Bennington. The funeral was held at the Presbyterian church that afternoon at 2:30 o'clock conducted by Rev. Lawrence Orr of Springfield. A quartet consisting of Emory and Porter Smith, Tom Poplin and Homer Matlock sang. The body was laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery. - Cassville Republican, Nov. 13, 1919 - J. B. W. Bennington was born in Logan County, Ohio, July 17, 1844. His father a native of Ohio, was a highly educated man, devoting many years as a professor in educational work and in the practice of medicine, J. B. W. was educated at Edina, Mo., and at Monmouth, Ill. The Civil War came when he was only a lad but he espouse the cause of the Union and entered the service with Co. G. of the 37th Missouri Infantry. He was in the siege of Vicksburg and thereafter was in all of the battles in which General Sherman was engaged and was with him on the famous march to the sea. After he was discharge from the army in 1865 he returned to school. In 1868 he located in Cassville and for three years was editor of the Barry County Banner, now the Cassville Republican. From 1871 to 1881 he engaged in mining at Joplin. For three years he was in New Mexico. He then returned to Cassville in 1884 and engaged again in the newspaper work, becoming editor of the Republican. He continued in charge of the REPUBLICAN for several years. A number of years ago he moved to Montana and later to Florida where he lived when he was killed November 1. On Saturday evening, Nov. 1, he was going to the post office in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., his home, to mail a letter. He attempted to cross the railroad track ahead of an approaching train. Being old and walking with an uncertain step he failed to get across the track and was stuck by the train and killed. His body was not mutilated by nearly every bone in his body seemed to have been broken. His body was brought to his old home by his son, Clyde, who lives at West Palm Beach, for burial. Mr. Bennington was married January 24, 1871 to Miss P. H. A. Townsend of Cassville. To them six children were born, four of who are living: B. C. of West Palm Beach, Fla., F. W. of this city, C. B. of Dillon, Mont., and C. W. now in the military service and stationed in Honolulu. Mrs. Bennington died in 1914. He also leaves five sisters: Mrs. Wm. Ragsdale, Whittier, Calif., Mrs. John Ragsdale, Whittier, Calif., Mrs. John Backus, Independence, Kan., Mrs. Mary Patterson and Mrs. Wm. Hobbs, Greenfield. Mr. Bennington was a man of more than ordinary ability. He was closely connected with Barry County history for a long period of years and had a wide acquaintance through Southwest Missouri where he was respected as man of deep convictions and as one who always stood for what he thought to be just and right. - Donna's Note: The stone has that he died in 1920, which is incorrect since the paper ran his death notice in 1919. - Goodspeed's 1888 History: J. B. W. Bennington, proprietor of the Republican, of Cassville, MO, was born in Logan Co., OH, July 17, 1844. He is a son of Prof. William R. and Priscilla W. (Wall) Bennington. The father, who was of Scotch descent, was born in Adams Co., OH in 1823 He received his literary education at Xenia, OH and when a young man became a school teacher. He afterward attended college at Columbus, OH, graduating in the medical and law course. He taught school in Adams Co., OH until 1844, when he removed to Van Buren Co., IA, remaining until 1854, at which time he came to MO. Locating in Edina, Knox Co., he served as county school commissioner for six years, during which time he also edited a paper. In 1862 he enlisted in Co. G, 27th MO Infantry, as a surgeon, and July 16, 1863, was severely wounded at Jackson, MS. Being sent to the hospital soon after, he was remained until 1864, when he was discharged for disability. In 1865 he was elected mayor of Edina, but resigned the same year and removed to Greenfield, Dade Co. During the last six years of his life he was principal and proprietor of Mt. Zion Institute. He was a man of eminent ability, high esteem, and was one of the leading educators of the State. He was Scottish Rite Mason in good standing at the time of his death. His death occurred in 1876. His wife still survives, aged 62 years. She was born in 1826 in Northampton Co., NC, and is the mother of eight children, of whom J. B. W. is the eldest. He received his education at Edina, MO and Monmouth, IL and enlisted in Co. G, 27th Regiment of MO Infantry, at the same time his father enlisted. He participated in the siege of Vicksburg and all the battles after that in which Sherman was engaged, and was with the latter in his famous march to the sea. On July 28, 1865, he was discharged at St. Louis, after which he returned home, and attended school one term. In 1868, he came to Cassville, becoming a one-half partner in the Barry County Banner, with which he was connected until Mar. 1871. From that time until 1881 he was at Joplin, MO, engaged in lead and zinc mining. He is at present one of four interested in a lead and zinc prospect in the SE portion of Barry Co., which is being developed by tunneling and sinking shafts, and they are getting out fine specimens of both ores named. This is near an old Spanish working. The company are experienced miners, and think they have a big thing. In 1881 he went to New Mexico, returning to Joplin in 1883. On Jan. 20, 1884, he came back to Cassville, and resumed newspaper work, becoming editor and proprietor of the Cassville Republican on Aug. 9, 1886. His marriage with Miss P. H. A. Townsend was celebrated on Jan. 24, 1871, and to them were born following named children: Boney C., Winfred E., Hetty L., Frederick W., Charles B. and Clarence W., four of whom are alive. Mrs. Bennington is a daughter of W. G. Townsend, and was born Jan. 4, 1852, in Barry Co., MO. Both Mr. and Mrs. Bennington are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Bennington. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, February 6, 1919 - Miss Fredelene Bennington returned to Springfield Friday to assume her studies in the Springfield Business College. She had been at home for two weeks on account of the illness of her mother, Mrs. F. W. Bennington. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, Feb. 27, 1919 - Mittie E. Bennington passed to her eternal home Friday morning at 6:50 o'clock, February 21, at the Springfield hospital, at the age of 39 years, 3 months and 29 days. She was taken to Springfield for an X-ray examination Thursday February 6. The operation was performed Monday, February 10 for adhesion of the stomach and intestines, a gall stone also being removed. For one week after the operation she appeared to do well. A change for the worse came on Monday of last week and she gradually grew weaker until Friday morning when in peaceful abeyance her soul answered the call for the Great Master and she passed into rest. Mrs. Bennington was born and lived her entire life in this county, most of it in this immediate community. She was married to Fred W. Bennington on December 3, 1899. To them two daughters were born, one of whom died in infancy. She leaves a husband, a daughter, Miss Fredelene, who was in the Springfield business college at the time of her mother's death, two sisters, Mrs. Alice Butler of Tulsa, Okla., and Miss Ora Burks, and a brother, Oley Burks of this city. For seventeen years she had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and was one of its devoted members. In church, Sunday school and the women's organizations of the church she was a faithful and tireless worker. A true, faithful, tranquil minded Christian mother, wife, friend and neighbor, devoted to the highest ideals of life's responsibilities, is the monument she leaves behind. The body reached Cassville from Springfield at noon Saturday. The funeral service was held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Lawrence Orr of Springfield, pastor of the M. E. Church South in this city. Many lovely floral offerings were sent to the home and a large crowd assembled at the church to pay their last tribute of respect. Apr. 19, 1989 | Research Note: Final rites for a former Burt man, Gary Ray Black, 45, were held at the First Baptist Church in Cassville, MO. Mr. Black died Apr. 19 after a lingering illness. He was the son of Stanley Black and Harriet Schrader, and grew up and attended school in Burt where he graduated from the Burt High School in 1961. Following graduation, he entered the military service receiving his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Later he was stationed at Percida, CA and Corvalles, OR doing radar work. Upon completion of his military duties, he was employed for a time as an inspector for Conway Trucking in Oregon before moving to MO with his family where he operated a dairy farm, and raised coon hound dogs as a hobby. He was the owner of the Night Champion Male Coon Hound of SW MO. For the past several years, he served as a mechanic for a car dealer in Cassville. Survivors include his wife Yolanda, a step-son and a step-daughter. Funeral services were Monday at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, Kan. He was born Jan. 27, 1938, at his grandparents' home in Cassville to Clinton Frederick and Imogene (Tabor) Black. His paternal grandparents, James Frederick "Fred" and Gertrude Mabel (Hilton) Black played an integral part in his life. Jim married Sandra Sue Lynch on June 21, 1958, in Sedalia. He was a District Level Manager for AT and T out of KCMO for 42 years, retiring in 1998. He was also the "Mad Scientist" and he did Tech Service for the Fairway Police Dept. Black of Sulpher Bend district for Mrs. Z. T. Black by the Rev. John W. Elliott. Mary Ann Hayes was born in Tishomingo Co., MS Sept. 21, 1855, and passed away at the home of her son James M. Black of Sulphur Bend district on Mar. 27, at the age of 79 years, 6 months and 6 days from a lingering illness. When a small child she came with her mother, two sisters and a brother to the state of MO. All preceded her in death except one sister, Mrs. Martha Ellen Hutchens of Cassville, MO. She was married to Z. T. Black, July 1, 1871 at Cassville. To this union were born five children, four boys and one girl. One son who preceded her in death was Purly Black who died Jan. 16, 1916, and her husband passed away, Aug. 19, 1922. She leaves to mourn her departure three sons and one daughter, Mrs. John C. Lauderdale, James M. Black and Riley Black, all of Fairland, OK and T. T. Black of Cassville; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Her body was taken to Cassville, Friday where burial was made in Oak Hill cemetery. She professed faith in Christ at 40 years of age and her preference of religion was Baptist. she lived up to her faith until the last hours. "Pat" as she was familiarly called by her school mates, was born two miles north of Cassville where she passed her childhood. Coming to Cassville with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William C. Black, she made many friends during the years of her residence here, and the same is true of her later life at Purdy and Washburn, where she died. Her demise was the more startling as it was so unexpected, she being in the best of health, and a few days before, and in the bloom of youth, but six days of pneumonia ended all. During her sickness she said, "I am going home. I want you all to get ready and go with me." She professed religion in August 1892 in Washburn, during the revival there. She leaves her parents, brothers and sisters, together with many friends to mourn their loss. May we all meet her in the sweet home above. Black of Cassville was listed as the informant. - Cassville Republican, Jan. 20, 1916 - Young Business Man Succumbs to Pneumonia: Pearly Black, one of Cassville's enterprising young business men, died at 8 o'clock, Monday morning, January 19, of pneumonia, at the age of 43 years, 5 months and 12 days. Mr. Black attended the big supper and exercises at the W. O. W. hall on Monday night, January 10. Being one of the most enthusiastic members of the local Camp, he took an active part in the exercises of the evening and worked until late into the night in doing all in his power to make the occasion a success. Tuesday he complained of not being well and Tuesday night went home with an attack of lagrippe which developed into a severe attack of catarrhal pneumonia. He seemed to be doing fairly well until the last of the week when his condition grew more serious. His death early Monday morning brought to the citizens of Cassville and surrounding community a shock of grief as many of them hardly knew that he was sick until they heard that he had passed away. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home conducted by Rev. L. R. Lamb, music by the choir of the Baptist Church. The members of the Cassville Lodge of A. F. and A. M. and of W. O. W. Camp No. 108, formed in procession at their respective halls and marched in a body to the home and accompanied the casket to the cemetery. There the beautiful funeral ceremony of the Masonic Lodge was used, both orders participating in the deposit of the evergreens in the grave. Pearly Black was born northeast of Cassville about three miles on Flat Creek, Aug. 8, 1872. He was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Taylor Black of this city. He had lived about Cassville nearly all of his life for several years and had been one of this city's successful business men. He was the proprietor of Black's Cafe on North Main street and had made a success of his business. By industry, good management and maintaining at all times a strictly up-to-date place of business, his business grew from a very small to a very substantial business. He was married to Miss Fannie Edmondson, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Edmondson east of Cassville, Dec. 17, 1899. The principal part of their married life has been spent in the community. Only a short time ago they had built a modern home and were living comfortably. He leaves a wife, father, and mother, three brothers, Bud, Tweed and Riley, and one sister, Mrs. Corum Lauderdale, and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his untimely death. He was a member of the Masonic lodge, a member of the W. O. W. and Woodman Circle. Blankenship died at his home in this city, Dec. 30, 1920, following an illness of several years, at the age of 58 years, 1 month and 22 days. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Christian church, conducted by the pastor Eld. C. F. Rose , of Springfield. John R. was born at Corsicana, November 8, 1862, and was a son of the late Lorenzo J. and Martha Blankenship, who came to this county in 1851 and located at Cassville where Mr. Blankenship built a carding mill and operated it for four years. In 1855 he moved to Corsicana and there went into the carding mill and flour mill business. John R. assisted his father in this business for many years and later operated a mill at Corsicana himself. Later he sold his mill and bought a farm east of Corsicana which he improved and put into a high state of cultivation and which was his home until his health failed. He then sold his farm and moved to Eldorado Springs where he hoped to regain his health but no permanent improvement was obtained from treatment there. Last spring he bought property in Cassville and moved here where he would be near his children. He had consulted specialists at St. Louis and Kansas City and his local physicians had done everything in their power for his relief. His family gave him every attention and had for months devoted much of there time to his comfort. He married in 1885 to Miss Mellie E. Stansbury of Newton county. To them six children were born, five of whom are living: Dr. E. L. Blankenship of this city; Herbert R. of Purdy; Ruis of Monett and Misses Velma And Vera who are still at home. Mr. Blankenship had been a member of the Christian church for a number of years and was a good citizen. In addition to his widow and children, he leaves two brothers, U. G. of Butler and J. He was an Extension worker for the US Government and the cause of death was cerebral hemorrhage with terminal bronchial pneumonia. His funeral was at the Baptist Church with Verdayne Dodson of Cassville, MO, as the minister. He first married Nellie May Wilson and second Rose Goda - First wife's Obit: The Carnegie Herald, Carnegie, OK, Jan. 21, 1920 - Nellie May Bliss was born at Pleasant Plain, Iowa, May 18, 1872. She was married to Forrest F. Bliss at Alta Vista, Kans., Feb. 22, 1894. To this union were born a son, Morgan E. Bliss, and a daughter, Elouise E. Bliss. The conversion of the deceased occurred in the year 1897 at the Peters Creek school house. She became a member of the Valley Falls Baptist church and remained a devoted Christian throughout life. Death occurred December 22, 1919, at the home in Wakuala, S.D., aged 47 years, eight months and five days. There remain to mourn her the husband, a son and daughter, the mother and father, five brothers, two sisters and a host of friends. The body was brought to Valley Falls, Kansas, for burial. The funeral was held from the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Bliss here last Friday afternoon, Rev. J.W. Barclay, pastor of the Baptist church, conducting the services in the presence of a number of relatives and friends. The interment was in the Farrar cemetery. As suddenly as an earthquake, two runaway, heavily loaded freight cars struck an empty box car on a switch track at the Cassville Mill and Power Co. and plowed directly across the street and crashed the box car into the home of Mrs. Zuma Bloomer wrecking the home, an eight room residence, and killing the older daughter, Miss Ruth, aged 14 years. Mrs. Bloomer, son, Laverne, and daughter, Willie, escaped with slight injuries. Thursday evening the C. and W. made its regular run to Exeter at 5:40 o'clock. There were a number of freight cars loaded with crushed rock ballast to be taken by the train to Exeter. Not all of the cars could be taken in one trip. A part of them were taken. Upon arriving at Exeter it was found that Frisco passenger train No. 3 was late. While waiting, the engine was brought back to Cassville to take the remaining loaded freight cars to Exeter. The engine with the train and crew returned and started with the cars for Exeter and found upon reaching the hill, out of Exeter about 3/4 mile, that the engine would not be able to pull the load over. There they left two loaded cars and took the others into Exeter, returning within a few minutes for the two cars left on the hill. Upon returning for the two cars, when the engine bumped into them to couple the coupling failed to hold, this started the loaded cars down the grade toward Cassville, Joe Ayers, conductor of the C. and W. climbed on one of the cars and tried to check them by the use of the break but could not do so. He rode the cars for about a mile and then jumped from them. The engine followed for some distance in an effort to complete the coupling. The fireman phoned from the Chas. Weatherly home to J. C. Henry in Cassville to close the switch which had been left open but Mr. Henry could not be reached in time. The two loaded cars swept down the grade to Cassville acquiring a great momentum. They swept around the curve on the Mill switch and struck the empty boxcar and plunged it from the mill across the street in an instant into the Bloomer home some eighty feet from the end of the switch. The house was wrecked and most all of the furniture ruined. The family, Mrs. Bloomer and her three children were seated about a table in the dining room where the children usually prepared their lessons each evening for school. Ruth had returned only a few minutes before from the home of Maud Trolinger where they had been planning for the school exercises to be held the next day. She was seated at the table studying when the tragedy occurred. She was caught beneath the debris and her body was found with difficulty. Physicians who examined her say that she must have received the full force of the impact as there was every indication of concussion of the brain and the spine. She never regained consciousness and soon passed away. An inquest was held before justice of the peace H. P. Sons Friday. The jury composed of W. O. Black, Arthur Erwin, C. H. Hadley, C. W. Williams, H. O. Abernathy and W. H. Martin, rendered the following verdict: "We the jury find that Ruth Bloomer came to her death by being crushed under the debris of a wrecked building, which wreck was caused by the negligence of the Cassville and Western Railway Co. in not having the necessary safety appliances." Francis Ruth Bloomer was born in Cassville Oct. 3, 1903 and died on Oct 4, 1917. She was the oldest daughter of Mrs. Zuma Bloomer, who for a number of years has been a teacher in the Cassville school, and who is the widow of the late William J. Bloomer, one of this county's most prominent citizens. Ruth was a member of the freshman class of the Cassville High school. She was an excellent pupil and beloved by teachers and classmates who are deeply grieved over the awful tragedy. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. from the Baptist church, conducted by Rev. J. T. Brattin. Ten girls, her classmates acted as flower girls. Research Note: Zuma was a daughter of David and Ruth Frances (Sallee) Talbert. She married William Jasper Bloomer, Oct. 11, 1900, in Barry Co., MO - In 1917, a runaway box car jumped the tracks at the switch, East of Main Street, in Cassville, MO, and demolished the Bloomer residence. The Bloomer's lived in an eight-room house near the Cassville Milling and Power Company, located near the intersection of 9th and East Street. In the house was Zuma Bloomer, a widow mother of three, a son William Bloomer and two daughters. One of the daughters, Ruth, was killed when the runaway box car came through the house. Mrs. Zuma Bloomer was a teacher in the Cassville School Verdana. - March 18, 1905, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Born to Mrs. W. J. Bloomer a beautiful daughter. SSW: Wilma Sue Hawk - Inscription: "Married Oct. 20, 1949" - Research Note: He was son of William Clinton and Amy Jewell (Hudson) Blythe. He was a lifelong Cassville resident and was a 1949 graduate of Cassville High School. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army Dental Corps from 1952 to 1954. Upon his discharge from the military service he began his ownership and operation of Blythe Grocery in Cassville for seven years. In 1961, he built Cassville Bowl of which he was owner and proprietor for 25 years before he retired in 1986. He was a longtime member of the Cassville Chamber of Commerce and the Cassville Rotary Club. Larry was a member of the First Christian Church in Cassville for 64 years where he served as a deacon and was a member of the church choir. He married Sue Hawk on October 20, 1949 in Cassville, Missouri. On October 20, 1949, she was united in marriage to Larry Hudson Blythe in Cassville, with the bride's grandfather, Reverend Calvin Henderson officiating; and to this union two children were born. She attended Elementary and Middle school in Cassville, Boonville, Missouri, Huntsville, Arkansas, and Springdale, Arkansas. She attended high school in Cassville, where she graduated in 1949 as Class Valedictorian. Mrs. Blythe was employed in her earlier years as secretary at Barry County Extension office, Barry County Library and Bookmobile, secretary to the Superintendent at Cassville School district, and Civil Service Secretary at Past Survey Department in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Mrs. Blythe along with her husband built Cassville Bowl in 1961 where she served as co-owner, league coordinator, and junior/adult league coach. She volunteered at Cassville Chamber of Commerce, Barry County Museum, and the First Baptist Church. She was a member of First Christian Church since 1948 where she baptized. Mrs. Blythe was active in church activities, taught Sunday school class and served as church office secretary.
