SSW: Rebecca - Research Note: Son of Uriah Vermillion born OH and Matilda Ethridge born IL. Luther Vermillion of rural Monett, MO was the informant on the death certificate. His first wife was Mary C. Meador, second wife Rebecca Wray. - Goodspeed's History: Reason Vermillion, a well to do farmer of Capp's Creek TWP., Barry Co., residing four and one-half miles SW of Monett, is a native of the county, born in 1848. He is a son of Uriah and Matilda (Ethridge) Vermillion. Uriah Vermillion was born in OH in 1820, and was a farmer by vocation. When a boy he drove a yoke of oxen to Barry Co., MO, for his father Reuben Vermillion, who settled where Monett is now located. The latter was a pioneer settler of the county, which at that time was an unbroken wilderness, teeming with wild animals and Indians. He became the owner of 320 acres of land, which he sold about 1859 and removed to Laclede Co., MO, where about 1870, he was killed in a storm. He was highly esteemed in SW MO and was a devoted Christian, having been a minister in the Regular Baptist Church for over forty years. He was the father of twelve children, five girls and seven boys. Uriah was his second child. He was reared on his father's farm, and after his marriage, located near the old homestead. His death occurred in 1865. His wife was born in TN and died in 1874. They were the parents of eleven children, seven of whom are living. Reason Vermillion is their eldest child. He grew to manhood on the farm, making his home with his parents until their deaths, after which he remained with his brothers and sisters until they attained mature years. He received his portion of the old homestead, and as the other heirs became of age, purchased their interests, until he finally owned the entire farm. In 1888 he purchased the old Hudson farm of 220 acres, on which he now resides. In Nov. 1874, he married Mary C. Meador, a native of McDonald Co., MO. To them have been born six children; William E. (deceased), Walter A. (an infant, deceased), Luther D., George H. (deceased), and Ethie Jane (deceased). Mr. Vermillion is a stanch Republican, and he and wife are members of the Baptist Church. - Cassville Republican, Oct. 1893 - Reason Vermillion secured one of Thomas M. Allen's fine thoroughbred Jersey calves, Tuesday, for which he paid $35. Mr. Allen recently received very gratifying reports from the Jerseys he shipped to Bowe, Texas, in the summer. The present owner thinks there are no others as good. - Monett Times, Aug. 1, 1901 - Tuesday afternoon during the rain storm, Vermillion's livery barn was struck by lighting, burning out the electric light wires, stunning Dr. West's horse and knocking one of the employees off from his chair. The damage to the building was slight. - Cassville Republican, Aug. 14, 1919 - Mr. and Mrs. Reason Vermillion of Monett visited Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Meador south of town last week and other relatives here and attended the reunion. WORMINGTON, Asa Hassell Jan. 18, 1803 Mar. 28, 1875 Research Note: Age 72 years 2 mos. and 10 days old - Researchers say he was the son of Edward Wormington and Nancy Anna Hassell. Asa Hassell Wormington married Anna Olive Hawley about 1821 and he was born in Sumner Co., TN. Anna Wormington died in 1843 and is buried at Pierce City Cemetery, Pierce City, Lawrence Co., MO. Asa married second Nancy Green sometime around 1844. - Asa and Anna's son Edward J. Wormington married Elizabeth Haddock, daughter of Charles Haddock, Jr. and Sarah Collins. Edward was shot by bushwhackers in his own home while he was napping and lying on a pallet on the floor. Elizabeth was pregnant at the time. The family claimed that they knew who it was and that it was one of their neighbors who lived nearby and in the neighborhood. Asa had a large family and several children by each of his wives and many of those children and grandchildren are also buried at New Site. According to Goodspeed's account Asa Wormington located on Township 26, Range 28, Sections 31 and 36 were open for entry Feb. 8, 1843 in Barry Co. Asa H. Wormington entered land on Section 36, Feb 6, 1843 and Jonathan H. Wormington entered on Aug. 12, 1844 also in Barry County. Asa Wormington was listed in 1860, in Barry Co., MO, with 1 slave valued at $400.00. Asa Wormington was a blacksmith by trade. He was commissioned to construct a saw for a lumber mill that was being built on Center Creek just upstream from Sarcoxie, MO. In 1837, Wormington hired a white man to travel to Boonville, MO, to get the steel blank, which had been sent up the river. Indian Chief Sarcoxie, chief of the Osage tribe, at that time and for whom the town of Sarcoxie was later named, sent an Indian man to accompany the "pale face" on this important mission. The two were gone about two months but returned to Barry County with the needed steel. From that steel Asa Wormington made the saw from which the first lumber in southwest MO was produced. - 1870 Census, Capps Creek Twp., Barry Co., MO - Asa Wormington, farmer, age 67, TN, white, male; Nancy, age 56, OH, white, female; Richmond, age 19, MO, white, male; Edmond, age 17, MO, white, male; Logan, age 14, MO, white, male; Oliva A. Research Note: Son of Asa Wormington and Nancy Green. Wallis Wormington of Monett, MO was the informant on the death certificate. His wife was Elizabeth Anne Means. - December 4, 1909, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Man Found Dead: Judge Velton of the county court, informed us Wednesday morning that while talking to his wife over the phone Tuesday evening, she informed him that a dead man had been found in the corn field, on the farm of Redmond Wormington 1 1/2 miles southwest of Monett, some time Monday. No one knew the man, and no papers or letters were found on his person that would lead to his identification. The Monett papers say that Coroner Miller summoned the following jury to inquire into this death: Owen Murray, Oscar Wormington, John Bell, Jos. Wemserje, Elsie Wormington and C. Tarpey, who returned the following verdict: "Having viewed the body and heard the evidence, do find that the deceased, who is unknown to us, from the evidence and the general appearance of the body, came to his death from some unknown cause, though not apparently from violence." The Star says that A. A. Adams and Redmond Wormington found the man, as they drove into the field to gather a load of corn. The man was about 50 years of age and seemed to have been a man that had seen better days. He was tattooed on the right arm with a flag, and on the left with initials "W. E. 18" and some figures that could not be made out; was medium size, rather heavy, wore a brown mustache tinged with grey, with full nose and ruddy face. Some persons thought they saw the man in Monett, Friday, Dec. 3. There were no marks of violence on his body, and it seems he had died of natural causes. His clothing was full of water indicating that he had died sometime before the heavy rain Saturday night. The body was taken to Callaway's Undertaking Parlors, prepared for burial and was buried in the Potter's field. - Later - The Star says a party from Pierce City, identified the man from his photo as being Wm. Elehorn, who lived at that place. Death Certificate

SSW: Nancy - Research Note: He was a son of Asa Hassell and Nancy (Green) Wormington. Ennis Wormington of Monett, MO was the informant on the death certificate. - Cassville Democrat, July 5, 1929 - WEALTHY FARMER DIES SATURDAY, RICHMOND WORMINGTON SUCCUMBS TO INFIRMITIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS: Richmond Wormington, 78 years old, well-to-do farmer, died at his home in Monett Saturday evening. Funeral services were held at the Callaway funeral home in Monett Monday afternoon and burial was made in the New Site cemetery southwest of Monett. Rev. C. M. Smith of Exeter, preached the funeral sermon and the Baptist choir had charge of the music. Richmond Wormington, the son of Asa and Nancy Wormington, deceased was born December 11, 1850 on the farm west of Monett, known as the old Teel place. He was twice married, the first time to Nancy Browning, who died twenty-eight years ago. Five years later he was married to Mrs. Theodosia Vineyard of Purdy. When married the first time he made his home on the farm now owned by his son, Ennis Wormington and his children were reared on that place. After his second marriage he moved to a farm between Monett and Purdy. His health failed last year and he and his wife have been living in Monett the past six months. His death was caused by heart and kidney trouble. He was converted when 55 years old, but did not join any church. He is survived by his wife, four children, Elmer Wormington and Ennis Wormington of Monett; Sanford Wormington of Pierce City and Mrs. Artic Robinson of Purdy. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Salina Teel, and twenty grandchildren. Mr. Wormington was an honest hard working man and accumulated considerable property. He was eccentric and being afraid of banks hid his money about his farm. When some of the money was stolen, his habit of concealing his wealth became known, Mr. Wormington, being in failing health and his mind being in failing health and his mind being weakened by a severe attach of influenza, a guardian was appointed and his money was placed in banks for safety. His last days were full of suffering from heart and kidney trouble, complicated with a cancer on his face. Monett Times. Death Certificate
