SSW: SSW: Louisa - Research Note: The family has his birth date as Nov. 14, 1859 and his name as Alonzo - not Alfred Alonzo. The census has it as Larenzo, which is also an incorrect presentation of his name. - 1870, Barry Co., MO Federal Population Schedules, US Census: House #141, Family # 142; listed as head of household, Haddock, Susan, age 48, born in PA, farmer. Listed in her household were Joseph, age 20, born in MO; Ransom, age 17, born in MO; Rachel, age 13, born in MO; Larenzo, age 10, born in MO; Rumbaugh, Sal, age 20, born in MO; Sarah, age 16, born in AR; and John Jones, laborer, age 16, born in AR. Spencer and Charlotte (Rumbaugh) Crumley lived next door. Charlotte was the daughter of Susan and her first husband, Soloman Rumbaugh. - 1880, Barry Co., MO Federal Population Schedules, US Census: House #180, Family # 180; Haddock, Susan, age 59, PA and listed that both of her parents were born in PA. Children were listed as Alonzo, son, 20, born in MO. And in the house was Ella Pence, female, listed as other and 18 years old, born in IL. No birthplace is listed for where her parents. - Susan lived between Robert Montgomery who was age 34, born in MO and Solomon Rumbaugh who was age 30, born in MO. - Two doors away were Penny and James A. Swiger and J. H. Banks and wife Rachel Haddock lived next door to Penny and the Rev. Swiger. - By: Hugh Ransom Haddock, Legends of the Haddock Family: "Alonzo was the youngest child of Charles Haddock, Jr., and was only four years old when his father was killed by bushwhackers. He grew up in the vicinity of New Site and married Louisa Browning Dec. 26, 1880, at the New Site Baptist Church with Elder Sills officiating. Louisa was the daughter of Charles H. Browning and Sylvia (Reeves) Browning. Louisa was born Nov. 9, 1862, near Monett, Mo. Her sister, Sarah Browning, married Solomon Rumbaugh, half-brother of Alonzo, and her cousin, Sarah Browning, married Ransom Haddock, a brother of Alonzo. Alonzo was a quiet man, very religious, and a man of high principles. He never used vile language and was noted for his remarkable memory. He, with Jim Browning as partner, ran a grocery store in Purdy, Mo., for a few years. Later, he and J. O. Swiger, a brother-in-law, were partners in a furniture store in Purdy. Then he purchased land in the New Site area west of Monett and became a farmer. He had 110 acres of land that was inherited by his children at his death." - Photo of Alonzo Note

HADDOCK, Charles, Jr. 1809

Sept. 26, 1862
Benton Co., AR
Inscription: "IN MEMORY - Charles Haddock Jr. 1809-1862 Murdered by bushwhackers, husband of Susan (Meyers) Rumbaugh and Sarah Collins." - Research Note: Maredia Haddock of findgrave.com says that he was the son of Charles Haddock (1780 - 1859) Penelope Mills (1784 - ____). Charles Haddock married Sarah Collins on Aug. 14, 1830 in Boone Co., MO. - Charles lived in the Walnut Grove Community - Not far from New Site Cemetery on a farm in the Hudson Bottoms. One story about Charles Haddock, Jr. states that he was killed by bushwhackers in Arkansas. And that he had gold that he collected from the government - maybe the Union Army - and the bushwhackers found out about it and set out to find him and take it. Another family story states that Charles Haddock, Jr. had gone to AR to deliver horses or to sell horses, and according to family legend, he was killed by Union soldiers. Both stories state that his slave, or a free black man, Steve, brought him home and that he was buried at the Walnut Grove Yard [New Site]. Both stories state that Steve took a mule to Arkansas and collected the remains and buried his remains at Walnut Grove. New Site Church listed his death date as 16th July 1862. That record is probably the correct death date for Charles and it states that he died south. The early records listed the cemetery as the Walnut Grove Cemetery Yard. In the beginning the church was called New Site but the cemetery was still going by the name of Walnut Grove up into the early 1900's. It wasn't until later that they began calling it New Site. Family lore says that Charles Haddock, Jr., was buried next to Sarah and there is an unmarked grave next to her. Susan, his second wife, was buried near her children and near her son, Solomon Rumbaugh's grave. MO Marriage Records
