He was struck by a truck walking on Hwy. 37. - Cassville Republican, Dec. 2, 1937 - RAYMOND WATSON, about fourteen years old, of Butterfield, was struck by a truck on Highway 37 near the Butterfield grade school building, about dark Tuesday evening, and died a few minutes later while he was being brought to the Barry County Hospital here. The truck, a Farmers Exchange truck at Exeter, was driven by Ot Sapp who has worked for years for the Exchange at Exeter. Sapp had been to Springfield on business for the Exchange and was returning home. Some school children were on the highway near the Butterfield school buildings. Another motor vehicle was approaching and Sapp says in watching the other vehicle he did not see the boy who with other children seemed to have been playing along the Highway. County Coroner Floyd C. Callaway of Monett was notified of the accident and after investigating decided that the facts were so clear an inquest was unnecessary. George Ray, who lives near where the accident occurred, stated Wednesday while in Cassville that it was an unavoidable accident on the part of Mr. Sapp. Raymond is a son of Tom Watson. The family had formerly lived about Butterfield, and had later moved away. Raymond had been back for two weeks and was attending the Butterfield school. She died July 27, 1932 at 11 o'clock A.M., at the age of 21 yrs., 5 mo. and 8 days. She professed faith in our blessed Savior in her early life and lived a consecrated life for her Redeemer. She was united in marriage to Burl Weaver, Feb. 1, 1932, and was a devoted wife. She was taken to the Stella hospital on July 26, 1932. Her husband was with her when she passed to join her Savior and her loving sister, Miss Lizzie Davis, who preceded her in death a few years. She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, Burl Weaver; her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Uriah Davis; four brothers, Frank and Jack of Golden, Jim of Tioga, TX and Jess of Faulkner, KS; four sisters, Mrs. Nettie Phillips and Mrs. Mrs. Elsie Roark of Golden, Mrs. Rosa Book Kuna, of Idaho and Mrs. Mary Bush, Whitesboro, TX, and a host of friends and loved ones. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Walter Head at Liberty Church after which the remains were laid to rest in the Liberty Cemetery near Golden. She was ill only two weeks before her death. She is survived by two sons, of Joplin; six daughters, of Lucerne Valley, Calif., of Purdy, Mo., of Maiden Rock, Wis., of Neosho, Mo., and of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 26 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Dorothea received her education in Long Beach. In 1969, she moved with her family to a farm at Purdy, where they raised cattle and chickens. She was a homemaker, artist and doll maker. Provided by Judy Wyant.: Eugene (Gene) Wiley was born July 12, 1910, in Falls County, [near] Lorena, Texas (Rt. 3) – The 13th child of William M. and Elizabeth S. Wiley. When he was born, his sister Viola (Vi) was still living at home – the others were married or deceased. He attended school in Memphis, Texas and finished the 9th grade at a school in Huntington Beach, Calif. When Gene was a small boy, his older brother Alvin had a cafe in Clarendon, Texas, and one day Gene left home on foot to visit him. His Dad went after him on a white mule. Gene's mother saved him from getting a whipping, by reminding his dad that he had given Gene permission to go earlier. Gene liked to go to Alvin's because he was always fed hamburgers and pop. When Gene was 4 or 5 years old, his brother, Elmore decided to play a trick on him. At that time, Gene was very brave and not afraid of the dark, as some children are. Elmore went out to the cellar one night dressed in a white sheet. Gene went out to get a jar of jam for his mother and up popped a ghostly figure out of the dark cellar, uttering a low, spooky "Boo-oooo". Gene backed up and his hand brushed against a wrench that someone had left on the wall, and automatically clenched it in his fist. As the white apparition came out of the cellar at him, he let the "ghost" have on top of the head — knocking, it out cold. Gene ran into the house screaming to his mother that he had killed a ghost. His parents found Elmore unconscious. He recovered and never tried to scare Gene again. One Halloween night Gene started to the barn where his mother was milking, and before he got there, Vi and Ivy, came at him dressed in a white sheets with a lit pumpkin on their heads — he fainted. When the family moved to Childress, Texas, Gene rode to town to go to a spooky movie one night. Coming home, he passed the cemetery and saw a white thing rise up out of one of the graves. He galloped home and told Orville, then Vi's husband, that he had seen a ghost in the cemetery. Orville took him back to the cemetery and showed him the "ghost" —— an old white faced cow. When he was about nine years old, Gene finally stopped being afraid of the dark. By then, his folks had a boarding house in Childress, Texas. Viola and husband Orville, and a friend "Red" and his wife lived together, and Gene went to visit them quite often. He was afraid to go home alone because of the "things" behind the trees along the road, at night. His father finally, told him he couldn't go to Orville's, or to the movies until he got over his fear. He made Gene go down the road alone after dark, and go around each tree to prove to himself there were no "things" to be afraid of. It worked! The "Red" mentioned earlier had an airplane he used at Fairs to fly passengers around the area. Gene stowed away in the plane, without telling anyone. At the end of the flight, Gene came out of the cockpit so sick and shaken that he won't get into an airplane to this day! When Gene and Viola were children, she loved to tattle on him which usually resulted in a whipping by his father. To get even, Gene would trip Vi when she was running in the hall of the hotel in Memphis. Ivy took care of her brother Gene and sister Viola while their mother was in the hospital for an appendectomy. His father had always given Gene access to his purse, a leather pouch, kept under the mattress in the bedroom. One day, Gene went into the room to get some change, but couldn't find the pouch where it was usually kept. Viola saw him go into the room and asked him what he was doing in there? When his father came home, he couldn't find his pouch and Viola told him Gene had taken it. When questioned, Gene denied the accusation. His father locked him in the room after whipping him severely, and told him he would have to stay there until he admitted his guilt. Finally, Ivy got the key from her father, told him she knew Gene wouldn't steal anything, and that she would find the pouch. She took the drawers out of the dressers, searched under everything, took the bedding off the bed and found the pouch where her father had put it under the mattress between the springs and a quilt. Their father cried and apologized to Gene and never whipped him again. In 1921, age 11 , Gene drove his folks and brother, Elmore, to California in a Model T Ford. His brother Pleas and wife Bessie were already there. On this trip, they camped along the roadside and cooked on a rock fireplace. One time Gene's mother accidentally built a fire under a flat rock which turned out to be a rattlesnake den. Seven snakes came slithering out, and Gene shot each of them as they came out when his father whacked under the rock with a big stick. Gene used a 22 rifle his father had given him when he was 9 years old. (His son, Bryan, still has the rifle.) When they arrived in California, they stayed in Newport Beach and his folks ran an Auto Court. Gene went to school (finished the 9th grade) and worked sometimes for a movie studio (probably RKO) in crowd scenes, for $5.00 a day. He was in one of Charlie Chaplin's movies. Gene was disappointed when he found out the "ship at sea" that caught fire was only a wooden framework. Later, he went to visit Orville and Viola in San Francisco. Orville decided to break Gene in to "worldly pleasures" as a joke. He sent Gene upstairs to a "house of ill-repute". A big fat woman answered the door and asked him what he wanted. Gene told her he wanted a "girl". She asked, "What do you think I am?" He replied "An old, fat hag!" She literally kicked him down the stairs, and one of her "bruisers" followed. Orville drew his 38 revolver and told the man he was a cop, and the guy left Gene alone. Another visit to Orville's was in San Diego, California. Orville wrestled for pay and was teaching Gene how to do a choke hold. He kept his 38 under his pillow. He got too hard a hold on Gene's neck from behind. Gene couldn't tell Orville to ease up, so he took the gun from under the pillow and pointed it at Orville's head. Luckily the safety catch was on. The wrestling lessons stopped. Gene was about 1 4 when his folks took him back to Texas. While living in the Childress area, he was thrown from a horse and his right hip was dislocated. His folks didn't realize it and it healed by forming a new socket which left the leg 3 inches shorter than the other. Gene learned to carry himself in a way that few seldom noticed or knew he was crippled. One time, Gene and an older boy, Pete, decided to run away to Mexico to get some girls. They stopped at Gene's sister Ella's house near Memphis, Texas. He got scared when Pete threatened to kill him if he didn't go to Mexico with him, and told Ella. He rode the caboose on the railroad back to Childress. His brother, Elmore, was working on the railroad at that time. While living in Memphis, Texas, Gene's father couldn't find enough hands to pick cotton and came in one day with two 14 foot cotton sacks. He told Gene to be up at dawn ready to pick cotton. Gene said "No sir, I told you a long time ago I would NEVER pick cotton!" His father replied, "You ARE going to!" Gene left home that night after telling his mother why he was leaving. He wrapped one of the cotton sacks around a post along the highway and went to Childress. Six months later, he returned, expecting his father to scold him. Instead, his father laughed and said, "Well, you're a man of your word. You TOLD me you would never pick cotton." When he was younger, Gene's father got him a toy cannon that shot real steel balls for Christmas. He was told not to shoot it in the house. One rainy day he couldn't resist the temptation, shot it and broke a window. His father took the cannon away from him, hid it, and forgot about it until Gene's mother told him she thought 6 months was enough punishment and to give the cannon back. For one of his birthdays, Gene got an Angora goat with a little wagon and harness to ride in. He started teasing the goat and it got mean. His mother went to gather eggs in the barn and bent over to pick something up. The goat butted her in the rear and sent her flying. She was a large, heavy woman and it knocked the breath out of her. She laughed about it but Gene's father was so mad he killed the goat and sold the meat in his butcher shop. When Gene was 18, he was pretty wild and his father told him he had better find himself a wife or he would probably end up in jail. So Gene started looking and found Mildred Odom. They got married and two children, Marian Gene and Richard Lee Wiley, then got divorced. Eugene married a Marie ? and had a Dude Ranch in Carson City, Nevada. They divorced, and Gene married for about ten years a Dorothy ?. She died of leukemia in February, 1953. No children, except her daughter from another marriage, Dawn. Dawn ended up in a women's prison in California. In May 1954, Eugene married Dorothea (Johnson) Lambert. They had three children, Sandra, Bryan and Robert, and Gene raised her daughters Catherine and Christine. The family moved from Long Beach, California in March 1969, to Purdy, Missouri. Catherine was already married and stayed in Long Beach; Christine had married and moved to Grandview, Missouri. Gene owned a small farm, moved into town and then to a mobile park, after the children married and left home. Research Note: Cassville Democrat, May 1, 1920 - Another God loving, serving and faithful servant, a man who was always zealous and delightful in serving his Maker, had been called to his home "over there", in that "happy land" where he has an eternal home, that awaits all, who will live the splendid life that he did on earth. Barry county has lost one of her best citizens, so recognized by all that knew him. His daily walks, should be an example for us all. Eleazor Williamson was born June 26, 1845 in Tazewell County, Ill., and was a son of Mr. Reuben and Nancy Williams, [reads Williams - not Williamson, probably typo] where he attended the country schools and grew to manhood on the farm. Was married Sept. 5, 1865 to Miss Mary E. Davis, six children were born to this union two living, Fred and Troy Williamson of this city. When the civil war came up, he enlisted in the 1st Missouri Artillery and served with Gen. Sherman and was with him in his Atlanta, Ga., campaign and saw much hard service. After the war, he returned to Illinois and then he and wife in about 1867 moved to Bourbon County, Kan., where he resided fifteen years, going through all the hardships of pioneer life in that state. In 1882, he moved to Eureka Springs, Ark., and purchased a livery barn and ran it for a time, and then traded the barn for Clark Cornell farm on Roaring River, near Eagle Rock, where they resided for six years, and then traded that farm for one on Kings Prairie, where they resided for five years, and then traded for the M. Burkholder farm on Rock Creek. From there he bought a farm and moved to near Butterfield, where he resided for five years. During the residence there, Mrs. Williamson died June 4, 1912. That same year, he moved to Cassville and has lived there since. On March 8, 1913 he and Mrs. L. C. Lloyd were married and lived a quiet and happy life. He died at his home in this city, Monday, April 26, of kidney trouble, age 74 years, and 10 months. He had been a member of the Baptist Church for 46 years and was a deacon in the First Cassville Church and was recognized by all his acquaintances as an excellent man and citizen and always stood for morality in the first degree. His desire was to see and have people do good, all he time. Rev. Edward Chapel an old friend, conducted funeral services at the Baptist Church in this city, Tuesday at 2 p. m., after winch the remains were conveyed to Mt.
