Research Note: Leonard L. Burrow, 89, Gladstone, passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at Spring Hill Assisted Living Center, Neosho, MO. He was the son of W. A. and Edna (Berry) Burrow. He was a graduate of Neosho High School, class of 1937. Leonard served his country as a Sergeant with the 15th Army Air Force, 96th Bomb Squadron, and 2nd Bomb Group, receiving eight bronze campaign stars, while serving in the American, European, and Middle East Theaters. Leonard was co-owner of Browning Furniture in Neosho and was a buyer for Macy Furniture and the Jones Store in Kansas City. He was a member of the Linden Baptist Church in Gladstone and served as a senior deacon for 65 years. Leonard married Virginia Browning and during their union, they cared for 110 foster children and were house parents with the Boys and Girls Club of Joplin, MO. She preceded him in death. Leonard married Lucille (Ramseier) Norton and she preceded him in death. His parents, two brothers, Louis Burrow and Lloyd Burrow and a sister, Lucille Miller, also preceded him in death. Carpenter, farmer and dealer in stock, was born near Pisgah, Cooper Co., Mo., November 27, 1843, and is the son of Samuel and Sally (Langley) Carpenter, former of whom was a native of Kentucky and moved to Missouri, where he married. The grandfather, Samuel Carpenter, was a black-smith by trade. The subject of this sketch was reared to his father’s business, that of farming, and followed this occupation until the breaking out of the Civil War, when he enlisted in the Missouri State Guard and served six months, after which he returned to farming in Cooper County and Pettis County, Mo. While in the latter county he married Miss Hettie Ann Pulley, a native of Missouri, whose parents were natives of the same State. In 1870 Mr. Carpenter came to Newtonia Township, where he purchased his present farm, and where he has remained ever since. He now owns 580 acres, located in four different farms. To his marriage were born four sons and two daughters: Jennie Lee, Robert S., William T., James O., Annie M. and Richard H. Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter are worthy members of the Baptist Church, and he has frequently been a member of the school board of his district. Research Note: He was divorced and his wife given as Ida Conrad. His first wife was Neppie Elinor Northcutt. Son of Jacob Conrad and Elizabeth Alkire both born WV. Martha Odee of Neosho, MO was the informant on the death certificate. He was appointed postmaster of Fairview, Newton Co., MO post office on Apr. 29, 1919. - 1900 census says that he and Neppie had been married one year. - June 3, 1915, Thursday, Cassville Republican - The trial of Darius Conrad of Fairview came up on change of venue in J. R. Parmley's court at Butterfield Tuesday. Conrad was charged with criminal libel. The jury found him guiltily as charged and asses the fine at $50. An appeal will likely be taken. Attorney Burgess, J. S. Davis and H. A. Gardner resented the state and Attorneys Mayhew of Monett and Crow of Fairview appeared for the defendant. - Feb. 10, 1916, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Darius Conrad of Fairview, has filed suit in the Newton County circuit court, through his attorneys, Mayhew and Sater for damages in the sum of twelve thousand dollars, against Dr. T. D. S. and Otis McCall. This suit grew out of the doctors conspiring together so it is alleged and publicly horse whipping Darius Conrad in the fall of 1914. Mr. Conrad was a highly respected citizen of Fairview and was also an applicant for the post office at that place and was the highest on the list. Mr. Conrad is very prominent in Sunday School work and at one time was county school commissioner of McDonald County. He is a brother-in-law of Dr. Northcutt of Seligman and Dr. Northcutt of Washburn. The trial will be called in the February term at Neosho. This grew out of a post office scrap at Fairview. Monett Star. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, Oct. 23, 1919 - Darius Conrad of Fairview was given a verdict for $250 as damages against Mr. McCall by a stone County jury last week, the case having been taken to Stone County upon change of venue. Research Note: According to her death certificate she was a daughter of Thomas Dillard Northcutt, born Paris, KY, and Mary Elizabeth Gatewood. A cerebral hemorrhage was the cause of death. Darius Conrad, Fairview, MO, was the informant. The Northcutt family reports her name as Penelope Eleanor. She was the deputy post mistress. Dr. Blum Northcutt was her brother. She is buried in the Northcutt plot. Research Note: Mary Crumley, daughter of Thomas and Susan (Terrell) Crumley. Married (1) William Anderson Cox who died in 1862 in a Confederate Hospital, Whitesville, Georgia. Married (2) Jacob Hart on June 22, 1871 in Barry Co., MO. Barry County, MO. Court Records show that he abandoned her and she filed papers on Sept. 29, 1873 to gain control of their 72 acres in Sec 19, T 25 R 28 Barry Co., MO. Her parents moved before the Civil War, to Barry County. She and her children followed in 1862. Her 1st husband W. A Cox died that same year from injuries of the war. Her stone is no longer there - Inscription: "Wife of A. Cox". Also "Remember friends as you pass by, as you are now, so once was I, As I am now so you must be, Prepare in life to follow me." Inscription: "In Loving Memory of the Crumley Family - John E. and Susan Cox Crumley Family" - Research Note: John Elwood Crumley was a son of William Erwin and Margaret (Wetzel) Crumley. It was William Erwin Crumley who murdered his uncle in Georgia. John's father, William Erwin Crumley, shot and killed his uncle John Crumley sometime in 1857 in Gordon Co., GA. In Jan 1858, the government of Georgia posted a $100 reward for the return or capture of the fugitive, William Erwin Crumley. Fannin Co., Georgia newspaper, "In Fannin County, recently, John Crumbly was murdered by William Erwin Crumbly." January 18, 1858. The Governor of GA put up a $100 reward in January of 1858 for the return of the fugitive, William Ervin Crumley. Thomas and family moved to Barry Co., MO around 1857 or 1858 and probably the move was to get William out of state and to avoid prosecution. William's wife, Margaret Witzel Crumley, stayed in GA with her parents and moved to Barry Co., MO sometime after 1880. She is listed on the 1900 census living two doors away from her son, John E. and his family. His death certificate has his death date as Mar. 29, 1936, Newton Co., MO, and born Apr. 26, 1856 Fannin Co., GA, and lists his father as Erwin Crumley and his mother with a maiden name of Taylor. Research Note: Susan is thought to have been a full-blooded Cherokee, born in Spartanburg, SC. Family thinks that she and Thomas are buried in unmarked graves here at Mt. Olive. She and her husband came to Barry County from Habersham Co., GA, and before that they had lived in Bumcombe Co., NC. Her maiden name was possibly Terrell. - Thomas Charles Crumley married Susan Crumley about 1825. The maiden name of Susan Crumley is not known; but, records indicate that she may have been part Cherokee Indian. This is where the Cherokee Indian relatives come into the family. This information comes to us via "The Haddock Family of Barry County Missouri". Thomas and Susan appear to have had one son, Samual Crumley, who lived next to them in Barry County, Missouri. Thomas and Susan had moved to Missouri from Georgia sometime between 1857 and 1859, according to the Federal Census. An order of goods were purchased from a Joseph Newman, Wholesaler, Retailer, Dealer of Clothing, Boots, Shoes, Hats, Caps, and Gents Furnishings, Commercial Street, Pierce City, Missouri, by either Thomas Crumley or John Crumley around the time of Thomas' death. The order is as follows: June 1880 "Received of John Crumley administrator fo the estate of Thomas Crumley, deceased, $8.60 in payment of the above bill of merchandise.
