Her stone has her name spelled Dolly and her death certificate has it Dollie. - Monett Times, June 20, 1930 - Funeral services for Mrs. J. A. Hagler, 76, who died at her home, 406 Central Avenue, Tuesday June 17, were held at the First Methodist church Thursday afternoon. A large assembly of people gathered to pay respects to Mrs. Hagler, who had lived in the county most of her life. The sermon was preached by Dr. Harvey A. Jones, pastor of the church, who took for his text, "Precious in the sight of the Lord in the death of his saints", from Psalm 116:15. He said that the death of God's saints was the coming of life. Mrs. Hagler began her Christian life early and continued gloriously. A choir composed of Leslie Mason, Mrs. W. T. Kines, Mrs. P. D. Woods, Mrs. E. W. Russey, Mrs. A. W. Gilbert, Mrs. W. C. Bray and L. N. Harrod, sang "City For Square", "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere, and "Abide With Me". Miss Dixie Gulick was accompanist. A special song was a duet, "In The Garden of Prayer"' by Mrs. Woods and Mrs. Gilbert. Pallbearers were O. O. Huffman, Claud Sponable and Mrs. Hagler's grandsons, Lester Davis, Raymond Davis, Oltie Davis and Farris Davis. Burial took place in the IOOF Cemetery under the direction of the Callaway undertakers. There was a profusion of beautiful floral offerings sent by friends and relatives. Among the out of town people who came to attend the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Fly and family, Verona and Mrs. John Bennett, of McDowell and numerous others. The minister read an obituary which was as follows: Mrs. J. A. Hagler, 76 years old, a life-time resident of this community, died at her home, Tuesday afternoon, June 17. She had been an invalid since a stroke of paralysis eight years ago. One year ago she fell and broke her hip and has been bedfast since that time. Dollie Fly Hagler was the daughter of Elisha and Rebecca Ann Fly and was born June 19, 1854 of Flat Creek, near McDowell. She married July 6, 1873 to John Hagler who survives her. Mr. and Mrs. Hagler were the parents of seven children, who are Dr. M. C. Hagler of New Braunfals, TX; Elmon Hagler of Neodesha, KS, Luther E. Hagler of St. Louis, Mrs. Minnie Davis, E. L. Hagler and Amon C. Hagler of Monett. One son Charley, died in 1888. Mr. and Mrs. Hagler lived the first part of their married life on a farm near Bethel. They came to Monett 25 years ago last February. Besides her husband and children, Mrs. Hagler is survived by 2 sisters and one brother, Mrs. John Bennett and Rev. C. A. Fly and Mrs. W. H. Marshall of Monett, also 16 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hagler accepted Christ as her personal savior at 17 years of age and united with the Methodist church on Flat Creek. Mrs. George Harmon, Jr. was the informant. - Posted by Paul Hagler at ancestry.com. A short (3-page) autobiography. In view of the fact that John A. Hagler said of himself, "I never went to school but three months in all and that was so scattered it did but little good." we can assume his story was dictated to someone for transcription. He was 85 years old at the time of it's telling. I was born August 10, 1852 on what is known as the old Bee Henderson farm northeast of Purdy; but there was no Purdy there then. My father's name was Abraham Lenor. He was born in Tennessee. My mother's name was Elisa Easterman Lee. She was born in Tennessee. There were ten of us children: Nancy Viola, Jackson Miller, Martha Jane, John Adson, Sarah Angeline, James Marion, Elisa Missouri, Calvin Monroe, Mary Emalin, Enzy Lenor; all born on the old Henderson farm, with the exception of Mary. She was born in Green County and Enzy Lenor was born in Taney County. In 1859 things began to get hot. The Civil War was all that you could hear, and there was no papers nor post office nearer than Cassville, Granby, Gadfly or Verona; so we got but little mail. There were but few settlers. If one got sick, they would go ten or fifteen miles to sit up with them; and if one died, we would let everybody know it for ten to twenty miles and they would haul the corpse to the grave yard in an ox wagon. There were no schools. Plenty of deer and wild turkeys. In about 1860 they began forming what they called home guards camps; and one side was called Rebels; and the other was called Federals. Soon they began killing, and my father didn't go into camps and the Rebels would call him a Federal and the Federals called him a Rebel. They both threatened to kill him; so one day the Rebels took brother Jack out and hung him for awhile but didn't kill him. Then they took Father a prisoner. He got away and loaded what he could in a wagon and all that he could get and started to move. He left the rest of the stuff. We got to Springfield and got on the old John A. Mack farm, and Father went in the State Militia. That was in the spring; and brother Jack made the crop; and in the fall Father get sick and they let him come home. He was sick all winter and Jack took the fever and was sick and I was the only one to do anything. Mother was not able to be up part of the time. I had to go after the Doctor, and get wood and had to go about two miles after wood. I could not load a stick larger than a stove pipe so I remember one time there was a snow on the ground and we were out of wood and we were sitting up with Father and, Jack and I yoked up a yoke of oxen and started after wood. I worked all day till dark and then started home and when I got home my boots were frozen to my feet; Martha and Mother drew water out of the well and put it in a tub and I sat my feet in a tub of water and thawed my boots until I could get them off. Then I ate supper and cut wood. Next morning I had to go to Springfield after the doctor, and he came out. He didn't think Jack would live but he got better and Father got worse and I went after the doctor. That time there was scare that the Rebels were coming and they kept me all night, as they had pickets on all roads to see that no one got out of town. You had to go to the Provost Marshall and get a pass so the pickets would let you pass. The next day I got a pass and went home and then went six miles to get an old woman doctor to see Father, and she said he might live till night and if he was, to let her hear; so about one o'clock it was raining and cold. I started six miles to tell her, and I had no overcoat nor gloves. I got back home a little while before daylight, and slept a little while and had to go after wood. I got home with the wood a little before dark. Father got better and got up and they called him back to camp. Jack was not so he could be up and he helped for awhile and joined the old Bloody 6th Missouri Cavalry. It was called the Bloody 6th because it was in so many hard battles. The Spring of 1863, I think it was, Father was sick and was at home awhile, and he showed me how to plow and I got some oats sowed and about 10 acres of corn in and I did all the plowing and got all the wood. After the crop was made the army came one day and got half the corn. Left us just what they thought we could live on. I think it was 1864 that Father told me that after the crop was made I could herd cattle for a man named Jim Thompson. He bought beef cattle for the Government. So I herded cattle on the prairie where the Government Cemetery is now. It was called the Phelps farm then. In 1865 Father helped me get the crop in. He had gotten his discharge and just the date they declared peace, and Father bought a farm in Taney County. Brother Jack was killed just about the time peace was made in a little fight north of Springfield. In 1865, September Father and I went back home. I stayed and worked. He was gone home 5 or 6 days and me and the old dog kept watch. The wolves would come in the yard at night and howl. I kept the old dog in the house at night. There was one family lived a half mile on one side and another one a mile on the other side. On one side it was 12 miles to the first house. I didn't see any body only 2 boys while Father was gone. He was gone about a week, and that time he stayed I think 3 or 4 days and went back 3 or 4 days and he brought sister Sarah and she stayed with me a week. Then I was alone till he made the next trip. Sister Martha came with him and stayed a week, then she went back. The family moved the last of December. In a short time Mother took sick and I went 20 miles after a doctor. I started about 3 o'clock in the evening, I guess, and got back the next day about 10 o'clock. There was a post office about 12 miles. There were no schools, nor Church house. In 1866 or 1867, I took the team and went to Latimer's sawmill, about 50 miles and got a load of lumber and hauled it to Springfield. I was gone six days and then I was out on the road most of the time. In 1868, a man named Enza held a few days meeting there and I was converted. I was on the road most of the time for 3 years hauling lumber and cedar posts. I made shingles, split them out and shaved them; hauled them to Springfield. I went on Roark one time about 15 miles and got a load of cedar posts. I got there and loaded that night and got on the road and camped. It snowed about 8 inches. Well if I went home I would have to unload, so I started to Springfield on the Wilders Road. There was no house for 30 miles on that road. It cleared off that day and the wind blew from the northwest. Well night came and I drove on, thinking I might find a camper; but the team got tired and I stayed right in the road. Turned the team around to the back of the wagon and fed them on the posts. I never took the harness off the horses. I lay down on the posts, but didn't sleep very warm. As soon as it started to get light I started. I think I could have heard the wagon screech for half a mile. I was out about 30 hours that I saw no fire and ate frozen meat and bread. I was out on that trip I guess, about six days. I had no overcoat nor gloves. I don't know how I am here, as I didn't stop for bad weather. I remember another time I was out and it came up a Northerner. It was snowing and blowing and I had started to camp and there was an old man came to where I was starting to made a fire and said "You will sure freeze to death; you hitch to the wagon and drive to my house, and sleep in the house." Well I did and it was so cold and bad I stayed that day and night and started on. When I got to James River south of Springfield it was frozen over. I crossed on the ice. One day I was hauling shock fodder out of the field. Bill Turner was helping me. We heard a hog squealing. He ran for the fun and I and the old dog ran to where the hog was. It was on the side of a mountain and the dog got there before me and when I got to where I could see, the dog was trying to get hold of a bear. The bear standing on his hind feet and when the dog got close the bear would knock him down. Well, Bill came soon and shot the bear and he ran a few steps and fell. I thought he was dead. I ran over and stooped to take hold of his foot. He got up, stuck his nose close up between his hind legs and started rolling down the mountain, with I and the dog after him. When he got to the bottom he could roll no farther. Me and the dog kept him there till Bill got his gun loaded and shot him again. He had a cap and ball rifle. There was plenty of game in those mountains. There were no settlers only on the creek. No schools nor Church houses. They held meetings in brush sheds and under trees. The bear weighed about 150 pounds. In 1869 Father moved to Barry County near where Purdy is now and settled on what is now known as the Edmon Henderson place. There was not very many living there at that time. There was a store and a mill at Gadfly. Since that time they changed the name to Corsicana. There were two stores at Verona and two at Cassville, and no Doctors only in town. About 1871 I took an ox wagon and went to near where Eureka is and hauled lumber to Neosho. Would be gone seven or eight days. I don't know how many trips I made. In 1872 I went to carrying the mail from Forsythe to Cassville by horse back. Would leave Forsythe Wednesday and go through Galena and to Carneys store on Flat Creek. Stay all night. Thursday to Cassville and back to Carneys store. Friday to Forsythe. I got fifteen dollars a month and board and horse feed. There were three Post Offices on the line. One at Walnut Shade, one at Granby and one at Carneys Store. Later on I got on the Stage Line from Forsythe to Springfield. Would leave Forsythe Monday morning, go to Bull Hill, get dinner and change teams and then to Springfield. Stay all night and back to Forsythe Tuesday and to Springfield Wednesday and on that way. Sunday I stayed in Forsythe. I got fifteen dollars and board a month. There was four Post Offices between Forsythe and Springfield. I gave up the Stage Coach and went to help put up the Mill below McDowell. Then called the Talbert and Adams Mill. That was the name of the men that built the mill. I got twenty dollars a month. In the spring of 1873 I made a crop on the Crawford Farm. He boarded me and furnished everything and gave me half. I put in twenty acres of oats and thirty acres in corn. On July 6th, 1873 I was married to Dolly Fly. On July 8th, we moved what little we had to ourselves. I could have carried all we had at two shoulder loads. Our table was made out of a dry goods box. Two chairs and one bed stead, an old stove and a few dishes . We had a very good crop. We had two horses, two cows, four sheep, three small hogs. In short time one of the cows got the murn and died. The hogs got the cholera and died. The dogs killed three of the sheep and the best one of the horses broke both front legs and I had to kill her. This all happened by September so begun our journey without anything and still got nothing. My Father moved to Texas in November, 1878, and died the fall of 1879. Mother died in 1880. They are buried in Dallas County, Texas , in the Cemetery at Lancaster, Texas. I never went to school but three months in all and that was so scattered it did but little good. He died from the effects of myocardial degeneration. Elmira Jagers, 311 Pearl St., Monett, MO, gave the information. - Cassville Republican, Feb. 24, 1938 - Funeral Services for Abraham Hall, 71, who died Monday afternoon at the home of his sister, Mrs. Melissa Whittington, were held at the Methodist Protestant church on Marshal Hill Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Shearman Erickson, assisted by Rev. E. R. Stribling officiated. Mr. Stribling read the scripture Revelation 21. He led in pray and read the obituary. Mr. Erickson’s text was Hebrews 11:10, “For he looked for a city which hath foundation, whose builder and maker is God.” The women's choir of the church sang the hymns, Mrs. R. J. Kitterman, leader. Mrs. E. R. Stribling and Dollie Fay Burch sang a duet and Rev. Sherman Erickson, by special request sang “ When I Make My Last Move.” Burial was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery under direction of Callaway’s funeral services. Pallbearers were Hunter Anderson, Henry Martin, John Waltrip, Dallas Smith, Guy Keeton and James Beck. Carrying the flowers were Bernice Davis, Mary Howerton, Freda Martin, Louise Martin, and Maurine Keeton. Rauch of Monett, MO was the informant. - Monett Times, May 13, 1954 - Elbert Harrison, Monett Oldtimer, Celebrates His 93rd Birthday Today: The first chapter of this story was written 93 years ago in a little backwoods town in eastern TN. The year was 1861, the second bloody year of the Great War. The event was the birth of Elbert Harrison, who later caught a wagon train west and later still moved to Monett where he spent almost 30 years as a railroader, in the days when railroading was long hours, low pay, danger. Yesterday on the eve of his ninety-third year of life, Harrison recalled some of the events of his life as a kid on a wagon train from TN and as an unsuccessful farmer in AR. Harrison said he left his native southland when he was 12 years old, never to return. The 10-wagon train, made up mostly of his kinfolk, started the trip in early autumn and reached Fayetteville six weeks later. The near century old man said he walked most of the way because there were a good number of kids his age and they couldn't be confined to a wagon seat in the beautiful weather which marked most of the trip. Planning to make only 100 miles a week, the train did not travel on Sunday. Harrison explained that his family and relatives were religious people who held that the Bible meant what it said. A preacher uncle of his, along on the trip, conducted church services almost every Sunday during the cumbersome trip to the outer fringe of the western frontier. Harrison recalled that his father worked for a building contractor brother in Fayetteville before he finally bought a farm. He said he liked farm life well enough but the feeling wasn't mutual. The year he was married - to a girl living on an adjoining farm - he tried his hand at making things grow and came close to losing his shirt in the process. Then in 1892, 62 years ago this winter, he came to Monett. He has lived here since, 60 years in the same house on a one acre plot of land in NE Monett. His house was alone on a 40 acre piece of land and nothing but wind teased prairie grass occupied the area which now is a closely settled residential area. Harrison worked 29 years as a car inspector for the railroad, starting out for 14 cents an hour. He walked out on strike in 1922 and never returned. The work he remembers with the fondest memories is of helping to set up Monett's city park in the mid 20's and of staying around for many years to keep the lawns and trees and flowers beautiful. Many people who never knew nor cared that Harrison was a railroader will remember him walking behind a hand powered lawn mower at the park, doing a job which he loves. Although he seldom visits the park now - but he still feels he had part ownership in it, after the many years he worked there - Harrison is still a devoted advocate of lawn mowing and he can be seen day after day throughout the warm months of summer pushing a mower over the lawn at his home. He seldom gets away from home any more but he finds plenty to do to keep him busy throughout the day. He reads quite a bit, watches television and spends a good deal of time puttering around in the yard and garden. In way of celebrating his birthday, his grandson, Pete Rauch, will hold an open house Sunday for Mr. Harrison's friends and the family - a son in Carthage, a daughter in Kansas City and a daughter in Monett - will get together Memorial Day for the real celebration. Harrison said he had nothing special planned for the occasion. Daughter of William "Willis" Adelbert Hubbell and Elizabeth Haase. - Monett Times - Woman Killed By Lightning - Was Standing at a Telephone in Monett During a Fierce electrical Strom: - While standing talking at a telephone during an electrical storm in Monett Thursday evening Mrs. Arthur Hartman was instantly killed by lightning which struck the wire. Her three small children were in the room at the time and all were shocked by the powerful voltage. A pet dog lying on the floor near Mrs. Hartman was instantly killed. Mrs. Hartman was ordering some groceries when the heavy blast of lightning occurred. Her children say that the instant of the flash their mother dropped to the floor. The grocer with whom the woman was talking at the time of her death, distinctly felt a shock also and stepped away from the phone. He says that he had a strange feeling that something had happened and stepped across the street to Mr. Hartman's office and told him of the incident. While he stood explaining a messenger came to tell Mr. Hartman that his wife was dead. The charge of electricity entered the woman's ear through the receiver of the telephone, passed through her body and out through her foot. His wife was Lucile Beatrice Baity. - News Item: Hand Sewn Back on in "33 Still Serves - The man's left hand hung from his wrist, attached by a few small scraps of skin. "I'm not a wagering man," said the thin young doctor who examined it, "but if I was, I'd bet the thousand I have in the bank I can sew it back on to stay." The older doctor in charge at the Henry Ford Hospital threw down the ruler he always carried and stomped out of the room, growling, "All right, sew it on, but in three weeks you'll just have to cut it off and throw it away." This was in the summer of 1933, long before modern grafting techniques had been developed. James Stern Helm still has his hand to day. TELLS OF ACCIDENT - Yesterday at home in Dearborn (MI) he surveyed it, slowly opening and closing the fingers. Helm said that from the moment he realized the extent of the injury, he had just assumed it would be sewn back on. "I was emptying a crock of pickle juice in a sink in the basement." "The edge hit on the sink, shattering the crock and one of the pieces cleaved right through my wrist, leaving the hand hanging by a few shreds of skin." Helm recalled how he squeezed hard with the fingers of his right hand to stop the bleeding from his left wrist as policeman walked him to a police car. PAIN RECALLED - "The worst pain I had to endure was the pain on the fingers of my right hand from squeezing." Helm's ability to use his left hand normally has increased Steadily since the accident. "At first there wasn't really any feeling. Once I was holding a red hot pot in my left hand, and didn't know that I was burning myself badly. Now, if anything, the hand is hypersensitive. I have a better sense of touch, of feeling in this hand than I ever had before it was cut off. REGAINS USE - Gaining use of the hand was more difficult. "The kids didn't have to wash dishes for years," his wife explained. "James would wash the dishes because the movement of the fingers helped him get the hand working again." Helm was stubbornly determined to teach the hand to do what it was told. He would squeeze a rubber ball by the hour. Once he stood in front of a door for hours until he finally managed to grasp and turn the doorknob with his left hand. Employed at the Ford Motor Co. for 35 years, he never shied away from work requiring the use of both hands after his injury. When he retired in 1958, he was doing maintenance work encompassing the construction of steel structures. DIFFERENCE IN HURT - His hands have remained active since retirement too, as he does metal art work at home. "About the only difference between my hand a normal one is that when I hurl something on it, I feel the pain in the upper part of my arm. I can't pick up very small objects. And when I want to do something with the hand, I have to think about it or look at it, but I've been doing that so long it's automatic. Research Note: He was the son of the late Fred I. and Emma Cone Herriman. His family moved to Monett when Fred was young. He had two younger brothers, John and Ralph Franklin, both of whom predeceased him. Fred went to Monett High School and Jr. College and then went on to finish his studies in engineering at the University of MO at Columbia. He joined the United States Navy as an aviator during World War II, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross several times and other medals for his valor in the Pacific. He had many close escapes and was the sole survivor of his team of seven planes in the Battle of Midway. Fred opted to become a career officer and retired with the rank of Commander. He and his family lived throughout the USA. After retiring, Fred owned a small business on Staten Island, NY. He was of the Methodist faith. On March 20, 1944 Fred married Alice Isabel James to whom he was married forty-five years. They had three children. Alice preceded him in death in 1989. In April of 1990 he married Mary Ann Gibbons Walker, then of Monett. They lived in Vacaville, CA and Springfield, MO. Leon went to school through the eighth grade at the Osa School, southeast of Aurora, MO and graduated from Aurora High School with the class of 1945. Before summer began that same year, Leon enlisted in the United States Navy. He was an Air Crewman and served his country honorably until 1946. At the time of his discharge, he was an Aviation Machinist. Upon returning home, Leon went to work for his father at Hilton Implement Co. in Monett. He later purchased the business from his father and shortly thereafter opened the John Deere dealership in Monett. He and his wife operated the business until it was sold in 1976 to Thurston Pratt from Louisiana. Leon was saved at the Free Will Baptist Church in Monett in 1947. Leon was a member of First Baptist Church in Monett for many years and later moved his membership to Arnhart Baptist Church. Leon was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and the American Legion. He married Gladys Thomas in 1948 and they had two children. On June 30, 1957, Leon was united in marriage to Norma Negre Planchon at the home of Leon's parents, Rev. Lester and Mrs. Hilton, in Springfield, MO. They were blessed with over 62 years of marriage. Leon and Norma owned a farm southeast of Monett and farmed that ground until 2011, when they sold the farm and moved to town. He married Karla Robinson of Quincy, Massachusetts in 1966, later divorcing in 1987. He retired from MIT's C.S. Draper Laboratory in 1993 and moved to Mountain Home area of Arkansas in 1994 where he enjoyed his hobbies of oil painting, watercolors, landscaping and fly-fishing.
