Research Note: Photo of memorial stone at findagrave.com. Her body was donated to the University of MO Medical Center. - DORYS CLARA PETERSON-BRADEN, a WWII/POW passed away July 10th, 2012 at Lacoba Nursing Home in Monett, MO. Dorys was born in a blacksmith shop September 12, 1911 in Esk, Saskatchewan, Canada to Lewis William Peterson and Augustine (Klatt) Peterson. She was the oldest of three brothers and six sisters. During the time Dorys lived in Canada, her father worked building the grain elevators near the railroad so as a family they lived in tent cities. As a child, they would play in the grain elevators and use them as big slides and she attended a different school every year. In 1921 they moved to Minneapolis, MN. At the age of 13 Dorys went to work as a mother's helper to help her parents financially since she had so many brothers and sisters at home. As she grew up, she went to night school and finally attended the University of Minnesota. Dorys then became the Personnel Manager for Armours. She was also a big sister with the Big Sister Big Brother Organization and taught swimming at the YMCA. Dorys became a Naturalized Citizen in 1941 in Minneapolis. She then enlisted in the WAAC, now known as the WAC Army, in February 1943. After basic training she became a drill sergeant in Des Moines, IA and had the first Black Women's Troop. She was sent to New Guinea with the Army Ordinance Company. Dorys was on Pau Pau Island, Ora Bay where there were still head hunters and then to Lae Island where she met her husband Carl. For her wedding attire she used a parachute for her veil and used a white lace hankie in her fatigue pocket. During this time her tent was across from General Douglas MacArther's and she spoke of when he came ashore. She received a field commission of Captain during her stay on Lae Island. Dorys was then sent to the Philippines. While in the hospital recovering from a broken foot she became a Prisoner of War at the Santo Tomas Prison for three months. She was returned to the United States and received an Honorable discharge from Baxter General Hospital in Spokane, WA August 1945. Dorys moved to Fort Riley, KS in 1951 with her husband and children. She then became a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She worked at Irwin Army hospital in Pediatrics as head administrator until 1976 when she retired. She then began her many volunteer jobs such as Pastoral Relations with the First Methodist Church in Manhattan, KS and outreach coordinator from 1978-1986. She was also active with the Manhattan chapter of hospice for 12 years. She then moved to Monett, MO in 1987 and belonged to the First Methodist Church. In 1990 she moved to Springfield, MO and belonged to the National Avenue Christian Church, the Minnesota Club and had a lifetime membership with the YMCA. During her time in Springfield she took a Caribbean Cruise at age 80 and received her certificate for scuba diving. She has sky dived, rode camels in the Holy Lands and was an avid swimmer until age 97. She was involved with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, League of Women Voters, NARFE, ABWA, AARP, Kansas State University Alumni Assoc. and Democratic Women's Club. Dorys submitted her body to the University of Missouri Medical Center. Dorys was preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters and a grandson. The celebration of Dorys's life will be September 12, 2012, details to be announced. Buchanan Funeral Home

SSW: William A. - Research Note: Daughter of John P. Pitts and Mary Bell Oaks. She first married William Alvin Bradley. She second married Henry A. Grubb. - Monett Times - 1953 - Pie Throwing in Local Cafe at 4 a.m. Isn't Amusing to Cook: There were two mad women down at Dalton's Cafe early this morning, according to a report handed to Chief Dan McDonald early today by night officers. One was Miss Rosalee Morris, night waitress and the other Mrs. Cora Bradley, night cook. Miss Morris called the police after two well-known youths had been raising a disturbance in the restaurant at about four o'clock. Miss Morris told police that they threw water on the floor. When she told them to leave they started out through the back door. In the kitchen they saw a fresh pie. Mrs Bradley, who had made the pie ordered them to lay it down. Instead they heaved it at her. Officer Gene Lambeth, who was one of the cops called to the scene, didn't have all the details of the case. He wasn't sure about where the pie landed when it was given the heave-ho. Lambeth said that the women told him they were "going down to see Tom Croddy Thursday and swear out a warrant for the arrest of the two boys." Croddy is in Lawrence, Kansas and won't return until Saturday. By that time, perhaps their tempers will be cooled down, perhaps not. In event that charges are filed, Monett will have an interesting crime story to report. It might be called "The Case of the Misguided Pie" or "Philbert Flew When He Flung the Filler." Census

At Home, Whittier,
Los Angeles Co., CA
SSW: Lois Geraldine - Inscription: "Apr. 3, 1947" - Research Note: Son of Rodie Ray and Ethel Broadbent. Loren grew up and went to school in Glen Elder and Beloit. He lost his father when he was 16 years old and his mother when he was 21 years old. He moved to California in 1940 with his sister Frieda. He lived in San Luis Obispo for a while driving cabs and doing odd jobs that were available during the 1940's. He then moved south to the Los Angeles/Long Beach area and went to work for Douglas Aircraft. Loren met his wife, Lois Geraldine "Jerry" Ash, while working at Douglas Aircraft. Things were a little spicy in the beginning (it wasn't love at first sight) but they got to know each other and married on April 3, 1947. They had a daughter, Frances, in February of 1948. Loren made one more job change and went to work for Sear's Roebuck in Vernon, CA. He did just about all of the jobs in a warehouse - order picker, unloading rail cars, inventory, delivery and anything else needed. He retired on March 31, 1982 after 36 years of service. Loren was preceded by his wife of 50 years, Jerry, in 1997; his parents, Roddie and Ethel Broadbent; his sisters, Frances, Frieda, Margie and Merle; and his brother, Gerald. - Back of Stone Census
