Research Note: According to the King Funeral Home records Mrs. Bagby was buried in Mineral Springs Cemetery. Mrs. Bagby died of tuberculosis and meningitis. Her death certificate has the same death date. Her father was given as A. G. Copple, born in NC, and her mother as Nancy Fare, MO. Thomas D. Miller of Aurora, MO, gave the information. - Cassville Republican, June 1, 1911 - Mrs. Missouri Elizabeth Bagby died May 14, 1911, at her home in Aurora, age 37 years and 5 days. She was the daughter of Abner Green and Nancy P. Copple and had lived most of her life near Forest Grove. She made a profession of religion in early life and joined the Missionary Baptist church at Mineral Springs. She leaves a mother, three sisters, one brother, a husband and four children. Mrs. Barbash died at her home in of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis often called 'Lou Gehrig's disease. Mrs. Barbash attended the Manhattan School of Music and eventually gained a post in the PSO as a harpist. She performed in that prestigious position from 1966 - 1971. But she felt the tug of another calling. "Harpists - you know how much they play," said Barbara Thompson, executive director of the Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestras. "She was an energetic person and needed to do more." Spurred in part by Dr. Anthony Susen, the Pittsburgh neurosurgeon who was then her husband, and by the urging of Marie Maazel, who ran the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra, she threw herself into the field of music education. In 1974, she founded the Three Rivers Training Orchestra w/Bernard Goldberg as music director. In 1985, the organization was to merge w/another youth orchestra to become the Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestras. Mrs. Barbash took to her new role as education advocate quickly. "The youth orchestra is where she got her feet wet in education, fund-raising and interacting in schools" Thompson said. After 15 years, the Philadelphia Orchestra hired her to be its director of education. She ran that program so successfully from 1988 to 1994 that Carnegie Hall in NY hired her to revamp its program, which she did from 1994-2001. "She went very rapidly up the ladder," said Steven Barbash, her husband. "We used to say its a long to Carnegie Hall." "She basically took an education program that was in its infancy and built it into something that is very well respected, not only in New York City but in the whole country," said Lisa Halasz, the present Carnegie Hall director of education. "She is probably the most famous educator to come out of a cultural institution like an orchestra." Much of Mrs. Barbash's popularity was due to her endearing personality. "She was very public and social," said her husband. "She was utterly unpretentious, but she was a natural aristocrat. SSW: Margaret Emily - Research Note: Son of Hoover Beeson and Nancy Jane Jeffers. - Mr. Beeson passed away of pneumonia while visiting his daughter Mrs. Welty. He was married to Margaret Emily Barcroft Apr. 7, 1889. To this union 6 children were born: Mrs. A. J. Nafus, Mrs. Melvin Welty, Mrs. Loren Reno, Roy K. and H. J. Beeson, plus 1 child that passed in infancy. He is also survived by 20 grand children, 3 great grandchildren; siblings: Mrs. Delilah Passley, Mrs. Minnie Ennes, Sam and Albert Beeson; plus a host of other relatives and friends. He professed faith in Christ about 10 years ago and lived faithful to the end. He was a devoted husband, father, and a good neighbor who was loved by all who knew him. Rev. Francis Goodnight conducted an impressive funeral service. Pall-bearers were: Hoover Hicks, Evert and Estel Beeson, Ralph Craig, Leslie and Loester Hicks. Flower girls were: Thelma Craig, Mildred Kring, Nadine, Erma, Leora and Leoma Beeson, Mrs. Christine Bush, and Lorraine Hicks. - August 11, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Lester Loftin, who has been selling merchandise at Mineral Spring, for sometime, has sold his store to Henry Beeson, who will continue the business. Lester and wife are thinking of moving to Pennsylvania. Lester is a reliable young man and we can recommend him to the people, wherever he locates. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, Nov. 21, 1918 - Roy Beeson has bought the Henry Beeson stock of general merchandise east of Cassville and has taken charge of the store. - Cassville Republican, Sept. 18, 1919 - Henry Beeson east of town returned home from Kansas Wednesday of last week. He had been there ten weeks helping in the harvest and threshing. He reported it so dry in Kansas that the wheat acreage sown this fall will be much less than the average sown last fall. He says the yield there this fall is fair in most places but not up to the early expectations. According to his death certificate his father was named Jonathan Beeson but his death certificate reads that he was born Jan. 9, 1832, not Feb. 9, 1832 as his obit reads. It also states that he died on Sept. 4, 1915 and not Sept. 3, 1915 as his obit reads. Dr. W. T. Bailey, the doctor who filled it out stated that he saw Hoover on the 4th and that he was buried on the 5th. Henry Beeson was the informant. Hoover Beeson married Nancy Shetterly on Dec. 11, 1853 in Warren Co., IA. Hoover Beeson married Nancy J. Jeffers on Sept. 23, 1856 in Warren Co., IA. He third married Martha Jane (Rains) Hudson. - Cassville Republican, Cassville, September 16, 1915 - Hoover Beeson was born in Indiana, Feb. 9, 1832. Died Sept. 3, 1915, age 83 years, 6 months and 24 days. His parents moved from Indiana to Illinois when he was two years old. When he was about 9 years old they moved to Iowa where he grew to manhood and lived until 1870. In that year he came to Barton County, Missouri and located on a farm south of Lamar. In 1896 he moved to this county and located northeast of Cassville where he continued to live until he died. Mr. Beeson was married to Nancy J. Jeffers in Warren County, Iowa, Sept. 21, 1856. To them seven children were born. Two, John I., and Mrs. Alice Hicks, are dead. The five living are Sam, Henry, Albert, Mrs. Will Pasley and Mrs. Martie Ennis, all of whom live northeast of Cassville. Mrs. Beeson, died Jan. 25, 1886. About seven years ago Mr. Beeson and Mrs. Mattie J. Hudson were married. His second wife passed away March 21, 1915. He professed faith in Christ at an early age and united with the United Brethren Church. When he moved to Barton County in 1870 he found there no members of his church so he united with the Methodist Church. His membership continued with the church until about seven years ago when in order to be with his wife he united with the Christian Church and remained a faithful member until death. Mr. Beeson was reared by Quaker parents and possessed many of the characteristics of that excellent people. His life was a splendid example of the man who lives an exalter Christian life. He was a kind husband and father and a good citizen. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church at Mineral Springs conducted by Rev. J. W. Ennis and the body laid to rest in the cemetery at Mineral Springs. - Hoover's parents, Jonathan Beeson was married to Isabelle Beeson. They married in Randolph Co., Indiana, Jan. 23, 1823. The eldest son of 14 children, Kenneth grew up in the Mineral Springs area, attending the Forest Grove School District and Mineral Springs Baptist Church. He left home to serve in the CCC from Dec. of 1939-1940. In January of 1941, he moved to Tulsa, Okla., where he began his career as a machinist. On Sept. 20, 1941, he was united in marriage to Pearl (Wode) Beeson. She preceded him in death on Jan. 13, 1999. Together they had three children. He joined the U.S. Army in Aug. of 1943, and served his country during World War II, in the Philippines and New Guinea. He left the South Pacific a decorated soldier and returned home to Tulsa in 1945. He continued working as a tool and die maker at various companies in the Tulsa area until 1973 when he and Pearl returned to Mineral Springs. There he bought the family farm from his parents' estate and raised feeder pigs until 1984. He and Pearl moved to town (Cassville) in 1994. Research Note: According to his death certificate he was born July 4, 1834 in PA and was a son of David Braught, born in PA. His mother's maiden name was Marks (she was Margaret Marks), born in PA. He was age 82 years, 5 mos. and 5 days old when he died and was buried in Mineral Springs Cemetery. His death was caused from the effects of Cirrhosis of the Liver. - December 14, 1916, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Lorenzo N. Braught was born in Pennsylvania, July 4th 1834 and died Dec. 9th 1916, age 82 years, 5 months and 5 days. When a boy he moved with his parents to Ohio where they lived till he was most grown. There he was converted and joined the United Brethren Church, living a constant Christian life, always having a smile and kind word for everyone. From there they moved to Iowa and at the age of 28 was married to Sophia Bickle. To this union was born 9 children, 3 dying in fancy and Frank dying nine months ago. His wife, two sons, Grant, living at home, and Ulysses, residing near Cassville, three daughters, Mrs. Ray, Moscow, Kan., Mrs. Wilkerson, Pittsburg, Kan., and Mrs. Robinson of near Cassville, one sister, Mrs. James White, Oswego, Kan., one brother, David Braught, of White Cloud, North Dakota, surviving him. All of his children being with him during his sickness and earth except one daughter. He was one of the pioneers of Labette County, Kansas, moving there in 1866, most of his time being spent in Kansas until 5 years ago he moved to Mineral Spring, MO. Since living in this county he has been held in high esteem by all. His Christian life has been worthy of imitation, many saying his life has shed light on a Christian pathway, and that they had been encouraged by his example. Grandpa Braught will be missed in the community and by his neighbors, but no where will his absence be noticed as much as in the home of his companion. Funeral services were conducted at the church in Mineral Springs Sunday afternoon by Rev. E. W. Love of this city and interment in the Mineral Spring cemetery. - January 13, 1916, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Forest Grove News: Grandpa Braught is able to be up after about three weeks sickness. Burbridge and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Hannum family", by Clara Elizabeth (Smith) Brandon, the oldest daughter and second child of Luther W. Smith and Bessie Alvina (Burbridge) Smith. My mother was the sixth child of George R. and "Lizzy" (Hannum) Burbridge. - My earliest memory of them is when they left MO along with Aunt Ollie and Uncle Wesley to homestead land somewhere in CO. It was during WW I. According to Thelma Burbridge Williams, Uncle Wes's daughter, the year was 1915. My Uncle Wesley drove the horses, pulling a wagon loaded with supplies. Grandpa was driving the livestock, perhaps 10 or 12 head of cattle. He had a cane or large stick to help him walk as well as to keep the cattle moving on. Grandma and Aunt Ollie were wearing their Sunday best when they left the homestead, riding in a buggy, pulled by a buckskin mare, named Rilly. They would go as far as Cassville or Butterfield to load horses, cattle, wagon and buggy on a train to head west. Uncle Wesley stayed with the livestock to feed and water them. Grandpa, Grandma and Aunt Ollie rode in the coach. Things did not go well in CO. The climate was harsh. Grandma said the wind blew the feathers off her chickens. My Uncle Truman and family had leased their farm during their absence. They came back sooner than expected, so they lived a short time in a large log storage barn. It was built between the home of my Great Grandmother Hannum's and their original home on the homestead property in Barry Co., MO (Mar. 1896). Grandma and Grandpa were well known for their honesty, hard work, and frugal living. Grandpa had taught a year of school before they were married. When times were hard Grandpa would leave molasses on his plate for his children. Grandpa was a truck gardener when they lived in KS. He grew lots of popcorn also, for his grandchildren. In the fall the Burgridge's would purchase 15 bushels of apples from Pauline Cox's Dad near Cassville. Grandpa would get a bucket of them from the cellar when we visited them on Sunday. Their long kitchen table was heavy with good food. Grandpa always said the blessing, then we would turn our plates right side up. They put the silverware on first, then turn the plate upside down over it. It was always fascinating for me to watch Grandpa eat fresh garden peas off the blade of a very sharp knife. Grandma kept large flocks of white and yellow leghorn hens. The egg money paid for the groceries and other necessities. They sold 30 or more dozen a week. Isaac Epperly, a Shell Knob merchant, came by on Thursdays and took them to Cassville for sale. He drove a truck and had a hard time getting up the hill road, before the Horse Shoe Bend around the mountain was made. The present highway takes in their garden spot and where the homestead house was built. When Grandpa was 2 years old, his family went by wagon train form IL to CA, which took six months. No luck in finding gold, they made the long trek back to IL. He had one brother Ira and an adopted sister Bertha. Following the death of Great Uncle Stanton Hannum, around 1920, our great grandmother Hannum lived with the Burbridge's. She lived to be a little over 98 years old, had some of her original teeth and usually dried the dishes. She gave ma a glass wagon salt cellar she'd had since 1881. - Aug. 17, 1916, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Shell Knob: G. R. Burbridge and family who moved to Western Colorado have returned to their old home here. They say while it is dry here, it is nothing to compare with Colorado. Ennis, near Wayne, MO., Feb. 19, 1928, at the age of 84 years and 5 days. Earl in life she professed faith in Christ and united with the Baptist Church at her birthplace, and lived a devoted Christian life. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Shoal Creek Baptist Church, Joplin, MO. In 1867 she was united in marriage to Abner Green Copple. To this union five children were born. Four of who survive her. One daughter, Missouri and husband preceded her in death. The children surviving are: Mrs. W. L. Ennis, Washburn, MO., George Copple, Springfield, MO., Mrs. C. M. Smith of Newton, Kan., and Mrs. Arlie Garner of Webb City, MO., one sister, Mrs. Ellen Neely of Cassville, MO. Also two step daughters, Mrs. Frank Garner of Mt. Vernon, MO., and Mrs. Riley Elkins of Sarcoxie, MO., seventeen grand children and fourteen great grandchildren. A host of friends who will remember a faithful wife and mother, whose true character has left its impression for many years, and patiently born much suffering, but when the last hour came, she passed quietly into her eternal rest. All of her children were present at her funeral, which was conducted at Mineral Springs, on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 21, 1928, by Charles Vanzandt. Burial in the Mineral Springs Cemetery, under the direction of the Blankenship and Barr Undertaking Service. The following ladies acted as pallbearers. Mrs. Stella Roller, Mrs. Minnie Gurley, Mrs. Fannie Wright, Mrs. Mattie Stockton, Mrs. Nancy Hermance and Mrs. Nancy Skeleton. - Note on Nancy's father: The Civil War in Lawrence County: Murders and Burnings - Jonathan Fare Accused of feeding bushwhackers, Southern sympathizer Jonathan Fare was confronted by several men who rode to the Fare home in Ozark Township in 1864. Called out of his home, Fare denied the charges but to no avail. He was shot and died on the spot. Jonathan Fare was one of those on list of September 23, 1862 assessments of pro-southern individuals in Lawrence County by provost marshal at Mt. Vernon. Taylor in Jan. 1917 in Barry Co., MO. - Cassville Republican, June 20, 1912 - Judge P. H. Duncan: At St. John's Hospital, Joplin, MO, Wednesday, June 12, 1912, at 11:04 a. m. Judge P. H. Duncan answered the final roll call. He had under gone an operation for gall stones and though the operation was a serious one, he was thought to be gradually recovering from its effects. And his death was quite a surprise to his many friends. Peter H. Duncan was born at Martinsville, Ind., August 10, 1841. In 1856 the family moved to Jackson County, Illinois. Here he attended the common schools and helped his father on the farm until the beginning of the Civil War when he enlisted in Company H, 27 Illinois Infantry of the Union Army. He made a good record as a soldier, always doing his duty bravely and promptly. He was with the army of the Cumberland during most of the war and participated in the battles of Belmont, Union City, Siege of Island No. 10, Stone River, Chickamauga, Mission Ridge, Kennesaw Mountain, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, Peach Tree Creek and several other engagements. He served three years and one month in the army. At the close of the war he located on a farm in Kansas and lived here until 1888 when he came to Barry County and lived on a farm four miles east of Mineral Springs until his death. He had been married twice. His second wife and two children, Viola and Robert survive him. For many years he had been Commander of the Old Soldier's and Settlers' Reunion. Under his efficient management, the reunion has become the largest and most successful in all the southwest. For four years he was presiding judge of the county court and gave the county an efficient administration. The remains were brought to this city Thursday noon accompanied by relatives and Col. Wm. Holliday. The funeral services were conducted at Mineral Springs at 2 p.m. by Rev. F. M. Smallwood. Short talks were also made by J. S. Davis and L. Beasley. The pall bearers were Prosecuting Attorney James Talbert, Judge E. W. Davis, Judge G. W. Henson, Judge Charles Velton. Ex-collector J. M. Davidson and County Assessor W. M. Houston. The entire service was impressive and comforting to the sorrowing family. The casket was covered with beautiful flowers, mute testimonials of love, sympathy and friendship of those who knew him best. In the death of Judge Duncan, the county loses one of her most honored and progressive citizens, a man who always took a deep interest in the welfare of this country, state and community. - June 20, 1912, Thursday, Cassville Republican - T. Research Note: Jan. 13, 1910, Cassville Republican - Mrs. Catherine Dunnevant of Mineral Spring died at the home of Mrs. Epple Baker in this city, Saturday morning, Jan. 8, 1910, of pneumonia. Mrs. Dunnevant had two weeks ago come to spend the winter with Mrs. Baker. She contracted pneumonia. Her case was serious from the beginning and her advanced age 77 years, was not able to endure it. Mrs. Dunnevant has lived at Mineral Spring for years where she was held in highest esteem. She was a member of the M. E. Church and the members of that church in Cassville made her the object of their special care during her illness here. Funeral services were held at the M. E.
