Horner, age 21, on Jan. 23, 1924 in Baca Co., CO. - In Memory of Elvin Monroe Fowler by John Nelson - Elvin Monroe Fowler arrived to bless the home of Richard Monroe and Delilah (Wren) Fowler on June 26, 1898 in "Indian Territory" at Whitehead, Garvin Co., OK near Paul's Valley. In 1907, his folks moved to Baca Co., CO, and homesteaded south of Stonington, When just a boy of nine, Monroe helped the railroad men by being a water boy. As he grew into his teens, he helped drive freight wagons from Liberal, KS to Springfield, CO because there was no railroad available. His mother died when he was fourteen, so he and his sister Ethyl had to take much of the responsibility for the other children. In the 1920's, he ran a mail route in the county and helped R. B. Holt stake out the town of Walsh before it was settled. On Jan. 23, 1924, Monroe was married to Clara Horner, and the Lord blessed this union with seven children. During the 1930's and early 40's, in order to support the family, he worked on W. P. A. building bridges, and also farmed for different farmers in the county. He was a loving, gentle, and even tempered father and friend. The family moved to the Cassville, MO area in 1948, where he purchased a farm and dairy cattle and also helped to build Camp Crowder. He stayed in MO until his wife Clara passed away in 1955. Monroe moved back to Baca Co. in 1955 and lived out his last years in Walsh. In 1967, he married Maude Hannafious and with her gained 2 step-children. Maude's health failed, and she was taken from him in 1980. Monroe then joined his life in marriage with Odessa Bohl and her five children and their families in 1981. Odessa's children and grandchildren really made him a part of their family and brought much joy to his heart. Her children cared for and ministered to him in so many ways that Monroe felt that he was especially blessed. Odessa went to be with the Lord in 1989. Monroe continued to live in their home, working in his garden which was his pride and joy, driving to visit his many friends, and enjoying the others who stopped by. Linda James, a special friend to Monroe, was always willing to go beyond the call of duty to see that he was taken care of, and she did an excellent job. Monroe also appreciated his two special nephews, Cecil and Bud Silbey, who always stopped by to visit and help with whatever he needed. Monroe became a child of God at a tent revival in Stonington, CO, when he was around twenty. One thing he desired of his Heavenly Father in his last years was that he would never have to go to a rest home, and God Graciously granted his desire. After his recent illness hospitalized him and led to his passing on Sept. 28, 1997 at the age of 99 years and 3 months, he went to his Heavenly home. Monroe was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Delilah; his wives, Clara, Maude, and Odessa; his sisters, Ethel Silvey, Eva Dapron, and Edna Coulter; his brothers, Elmer, Clarence, and Cleo; and his half sister Audrey Garman. He leaves to cherish his memory his seven children and their families: his son Calvin and wife Pearl of Liberal, KS, and their three children; his three daughters, Marie McCoy and husband Bob of Wichita, KS, and their three children, Edith Trahern and her daughter of Shelby, MT, and Edna Davis of Shell City, MO and her four children; his other three sons Fred and wife Ann and their three children; Eddie and wife Nadine and their three children; and John and wife Judy and their two children; one sister Effie Stayton; one half-brother E. Mrs. Gleason was born in Union County, Ohio, in 1837. She was married to Saul Gleason May 22, 1869. To them three children were born. One daughter who died at six years of age and two sons Charles and Wallace. Charles is now the only member of the family living. Mr. Gleason and son Wallace, both died in 1902. Charles lives at Coldwater, Kan. The family had been residents of this county since 1885. Mrs. Gleason had been for many years a devoted member of the Methodist Church and was an estimable woman. - September 16, 1915, Cassville Republican - Mineral Springs News: Mrs. Eliz Gleason, a pioneer and highly respected citizen of the county died at her home in Mineral Thursday, Sept 9. She is survived by a son, Charley, of Coldwater, Kansas and a brother in Ohio. Funeral services were conducted at the church by Bro. Riddle and her body laid to rest in the cemetery nearby, Friday. Charley was with her during her last hours. He returned to his family. - September 23, 1915, Cassville Republican - Mrs. Eliza Gleason died at her home in Mineral Springs, Thursday Sept. 9th, 1915, after a week of severe illness of heart trouble. She was born in Union County, Idaho, July 1, 1837 (death certificate says Broadway, OH). She was 78 years, 2 months and 8 days old. Her maiden name was Smith. She was married to Saul Gleason at North Lewisburg, Ohio, Mar. 22, 1869. To them were born three children, the oldest a daughter, Frankie, died when 6 years old. The other two, Charley and Wallace, with her parents, moved to Barry County Missouri in 1885, 30 years ago. Since then Mrs. Gleason has had her continuous residence on their farm near Mineral Springs. She has been a well known and respected citizen of this community these many years. Since the death of her husband and son, Wallace, 13 years ago, Mrs. Gleason has lived a somewhat lonely life but she was of a friendly sociable disposition, always glad to see her neighbors and friends and welcome them to her home. She had been a member of the Methodist Church 58 years, having united with that church at North Lewisburg, Ohio, in 1857 when 20 years of age. Her regard for the Bible and the Christian faith was deep and reverent and she expressed a comforting hope in God, and a future life. Mrs. Gleason is survived by one brother, Charles Smith, age 82 years of Peoria, Ohio and other relatives and her son, Charley, for some years past one of the leading teachers of this locality but now a resident of Kansas. Mrs. Jesse Redding gave the information. - Cassville Democrat, March 12, 1927 - Creed Hamilton passed away at his home on the morning of March 3, 1927, after having eaten his breakfast as usual and helping his son Lyman do the morning chores, he was stricken with his third stroke of paralysis. The first occurred seven years ago, the second about one year ago. He was one of the old settlers and was well known, having threshed and sawed for the public for many years. He was a powerful man, physically and full of energy, always interested in any enterprise he believed would be for the public good. He kept in close touch with the agricultural school at Columbia, MO, and tried out many kinds of seed for them. He was the Shell Knob correspondent for the Democrat. Born Aug. 14, 1860 he has spent 40 years of his life in Barry county, where he will be missed by his neighbors and his many friends. He leaves a wife and eight children to mourn his passing, four boys and four girls as follows: Toney Woodrum, Newtonia, MO, Francis Jones, Cato, MO, Lyman Hamilton, who resides with his parents, Jessie Redding, Cato; John Hamilton, Davenport, Okla.; Sterling Hamilton, Crystal Lake, Ill.; Ted Hamilton, Shell Knob, MO; and Miss Katie Hamilton, who resides with her parents. All of the children attended the funeral, which was preached by Rev. Chas. F. and Laura Hannahs, died Oct. 13, after an illness of nearly seven weeks. He, like other young men, had thought he must go west. About the first of August he went to the Nation and was gone for four or five weeks. To the surprise of his father and mother he came home sick and took his bed from which he never was up till the Master called him home. He endured his suffering with great patience. When asked how he was getting along, would say, "Very well". He had never been a member of any church, in fact had not expressed himself publicly on this subject, for at the youthful age of eighteen had thought there was time enough yet. He was a kind boy, a good neighbor and will be missed at home and in the neighborhood. Being rather a timid boy, he was never in trouble with his neighbors. She was listed as a widow and Dollie Howard gave the information. - Cassville Republican, August 22, 1912 - Mrs. Wm. Holliday Dead: Mrs. Ruey Holliday, wife of Col. Wm. Holliday, commander of the reunion, died suddenly at the home of her daughter, in Joplin, at 11 a.m. Monday. Mrs. Holliday has not been in good health for some time but seemed to be as well as usual and had been visiting her daughter at Joplin for the past few weeks. Col. Holliday was in Cassville Monday ready to take charge of he reunion. The message that his wife had died suddenly came as a great shock to him. The remains were brought home Tuesday and the body was laid to rest in the Mineral Springs cemetery. Rev. F. M. Smallwood conducted the funeral. Col. Holiday and his family have the sympathy of other numerous friends and acquaintances in their sad hour of bereavement. - Cassville Republican, August 29, 1912 - Mrs. Rhuey Holliday, wife of William Holliday, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dollie Howard, in Joplin, August 19. She was born in Jackson County, Ill., Jan. 10, 1842, making her 70 years, 7 months and 9 days old. She was converted and joined the Missionary Baptist Church at about the age of 17 and had lived a consistent Christian life till death. She leaves a husband and seven children to mourn her death. They are: Mrs. Dollie Howard of Joplin, Mrs. Rebecca Hughes and Mrs. Ruth Peizey of Murphysboro, Ill, Mrs. Clara Mullins of Pagosa, Springs, Colo., Miss Maggie Cooper of Valeca, Kan., G. L. Holliday of Dyke, Colo., and Dan Holliday of Mineral Springs. The funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at the Mineral Springs Church by Rev. F. M. Smallwood and J. W. Research Note: July 24, 1920, Cassville Democrat - Capt. Wm. Holliday Dead - Capt. Wm. Holliday of Mineral Spring, died Tuesday afternoon at his home there, after a continued sickness of sometime, aged about 79 years. He joined the Union Army in the sixties and after the war, he located in Kansas, and came to Barry County 30 years ago. He was commander of the Cassville Reunion for many years and aided in making it a success. He exemplified his interest in its being a success each year. For several years, he could not act as Commander on account of his health, but when possible, always attended. The funeral was delayed until Thursday until the arrival of a daughter from Idaho, who came Thursday and interment was made in Mineral Spring Cemetery. Death has claimed another one of our aged citizens and it is singular that he and J. R. Lee who were connected with the reunion, should be called home so near the same time. - Cassville Democrat, July 31, 1920 - William Holliday was born near Murphysboro, Ill., June 20, 1841 and was a son of Stephen A. and Rebecca (Will) Holliday, and died July 20, 1920 at 2:30 p.m., age 79 years and 1 month. He was reared in a very devout Lutheran home and his ancestors for several generations were strict members of this faith. At the age of 17 years, he became a member of the Lutheran Church and remained faithful to this early training and church until his death. He enlisted as a volunteer soldier in the Union Army in August 1861, and served his country 3 years and 1 month being honorably discharged in September 1864. He served in Co. H. 27th Ill, Infantry. He was twice wounded while in the service. He was always loyal to his country and it was his delight to encourage the young to acts of loyalty. Dec. 15, 1864, he was married to Sarah E. Hall, who died Nov. 17, 1870. To this union was born two daughters, who are Mrs. Mary R. Hughes of Murphysboro, Ill., and Mrs. Margaret Cooper of Coffeyville, Kan. May 18, 1871, he was married to Rhuey J. McClure who died Aug. 19, 1912. To this union were born Mrs. Ruth Pelzer of Urbana, Ill, Mrs. Clarinda Mullens of Pagoda Springs, Col., Mrs. Della Howard of Baxter Springs, Kan., Dan Stephen of Mineral Springs, Mo., and George Thomas of Dykes, Colorado. Oct. 13, 1913, he and Mrs. Sarah A. Wilmit were married and she survives him. He had been sick since February, when he had the flu. Since then such a complication of disease devolved that medical skill failed to relieve him. He was a patient sufferer through it all. Everything that a faithful wife and attentive neighbors could do to ease his intense suffering was done, but to no avail. He was a faithful husband, a kind father, a loyal citizen and a true friend. Rev. Ed Chappell of Cassville conducted funeral services, S. M. Cozad? Of this city, made a good talk and old comrades acted as pallbearers. She made her home in Kansas City the last year. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Washburn, Mo. Survivors include her husband, Earl Hudson of the home in Kansas City; a daughter, Mrs. Peggy Ann Henson of Kansas City; a sister, Mrs. Marjorie Cassity of Butterfield, and one granddaughter. Hudson, 66-year-old Barry County native who passed away on Tuesday morning in Springfield Baptist Hospital where he had been a patient for six days. Mr. Hudson, whose home was two miles east of Cassville on Flat Creek, had been an invalid since 1946 when he was injured while working for Forest Products Company. He was a carpenter, having worked in California and Alaska. Born on a farm near Jenkins, he was one of a family of 13 children. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Cassville. Besides his wife, the former Lela Stumpff, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Ada Hudson of Cassville and ten children: Mrs. Velma Snead of Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Lucille Simmons of Lapwai, Idaho; Harvey Hudson of Bremerton, Wash.; Joe Hudson of Wendall, Idaho; Wanda Valloton of Belmont, Calif.; Geo. Hudson and Allen Hudson of Ridgecrest, Calif.; Claude of the U.S. Army now stationed in France; Loyd of the U.S. Army, now stationed in Okinawa and Mrs. Yvonne Swofford of Sarcoxie. Loftin married Nannie Wooldridge on May 8, 1887 in Barry Co., MO. - Cassville Republican, February 18, 1915 - Died Suddenly: David W. Loftin, letter carrier, on the Star route from Cassville, to Hailey and Cato, died very suddenly at Henry Scroggin's home about one mile west of Mineral Springs, Monday evening about five o'clock. On account of his sudden death an inquest was held Monday night under the direction of Justice of the Peace H. P. Sons. The testimony showed his death was due to heart failure. A short time prior to his death, Mr. Loftin had stopped at the Mr. Busse's home about one and a half mile east of the Scroggin's place to warm. While there he complained of feeling bad but owing to his poor health for the past year his aliment was not considered serious. By the time he arrived at Mrs. Scroggins' home he was in a helpless condition, and lived about ten minutes after his arrival. He had been bothered with internal aliments for several months but had not been seriously sick at any time. The deceased was born in Polk County, MO, Jan. 13, 1851. He moved to this county about 27 years ago where he resided until death. As a citizen he enjoyed the confidence and respect of a large acquaintance of this county. He leaves a widow and six children. He was a brother of A. H. Loftin, east of town. His sudden death was a great shock to this family and many friends. Funeral services were held at Mineral Springs Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Wells of Miami, Okla., and Revs. Riddle and J. W. Obit for Lester's first wife. - May 27, 1915, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Mrs. Lester Loftin Dead: Mrs. Beatrice Loftin, wife of Lester Loftin, died at their home in this city Monday afternoon, May 24, following an illness of several weeks. Mrs. Loftin had not been well since the arrival of a son at their home about five weeks ago. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Zilliox east of Cassville. Mrs. Loftin was born in Oklahoma in 1893. With her parents she moved to the locality about twenty years ago. She was a devoted Christian lady and had been a member of the Baptist church for several years. In 1912 she was united in marriage with Lester Loftin. Two children have been born to them, an infant deceased, and the little babe born a few weeks ago. Funeral services conducted by Rev. J. T. Brattin were held at the Baptist Church in this city Tuesday afternoon and the body laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery. - He second married Margaret "Maggie" Evans. On Nov. 6, 1950 he third married Lora Leona (Ennis) (Russell) (Loftin) Hammond. Luney, and family this week. - Cassville Republican, Sept. 4, 1919 - Young Man is Stabbed With Knife - Eldon Ennes Receives Serious - Wounds Inflicted by Tom Luney - Quarrel Over Account - Eldon Ennes was stabbed twice in the left side and back with a pocket knife in the hands of Tom Luney Saturday afternoon at Oak Ridge baseball grounds as the result of a quarrel between Luney and Mel Ennes, a younger brother of Eldon, over an account which Mel Ennes had been trying to collect from Luney. The stabbing occurred about 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon at a ball game at Oak Ridge. Ennes bled profusely when struck by Luney and before he could be brought to Cassville to have his wounds dressed he was very weak and in a dangerous condition. Car trouble delayed getting him to town. His wounds were dressed by physicians Chandler and Bailey. They found that Ennes had received a serious wound in the left side of the back under the shoulder blade and another in the left side under and in front of the left arm under and in front of the left arm pit. The back wound was very deep and looked serious for sometime. Luney was arrested Saturday night upon a charge of felonious assault and brought to Cassville by Sheriff Houston and Deputy Reed. He succeeded in making bond Sunday for his appearance for preliminary hearing which is set for Sept. 13. The trouble between Luney and the Ennes boys is said to have come up over an account which Luney owes Mel Ennes for the season on a colt. Luney and Mel Ennes had been having trouble over the account. While Mel Ennes was in the military service his brother, Eldon, looked after his stock. Only in the way was Eldon interested in the trouble. At the Oak Ridge ball game Saturday the quarrel was renewed between Mel Ennes and Luney. Luney is said to have drawn a knife and Mel Ennes picked up a rock. Luney then jumped out of the way of Mel and attacked Eldon who was standing a few feet away and stabbed him. Mr. Luney claims that he used the knife to defend himself when hit by rocks thrown by the Ennes boys.
