SSW: W. H. - Research Note: Cassville Republican, January 13, 1910 - Died at her home near Shell Knob, Mo., Dec. 28, 1909, Elizabeth A. Cooper, aged 80 years, 4 months, 23 days. Eleven months ago the father was taken away and now dear mother sleeps near his side. Our mother was born in the state of Kentucky, July 5, 1829, was converted when young, and joined the Missionary Baptist Church and was a beloved member to the day of her death. Her body was laid beside her companion and husband, William H. Cooper, in the Missionary Baptist Cemetery one half mile west to Shell Knob where they will await the call which we will all hear and obey. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Ed Chappell of Mano on Sunday, Jan 2. The service included both father and mother, Text, Revelations 14:13 "And I heard a voice from Heaven saying unto me, write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth yes, said the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors and their works do follow them." Our loving father and mother leave ten of us children living, and while we feel our earthly loss we rest assured of Heaven's gain, and we can not do anything that would show our love for them better than try to serve the God that spared their lives so long on this earth, the God they served and our God. May it be the will of that loving God to bless us and may we be an unbroken family around His throne. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who aided us during the illness and death of our father and mother. Children. - Another Photo Online Obit

Pearl of Shell Knob, were in this city, Thursday, Sam said he believed that the death of Willie Mikeman was an accident and not suicide. - June 23, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Wm. Mikeman Commits Suicide While Wife Cooks Dinner - Young White River Farmer Shoots Self in Right Side With a 40 Stephens Rifle - Dies Instantly: The unwelcome news of the suicide of Willie B. Mikeman at his home Monday noon in White River township, 3 3/4 miles southeast of Shell Knob, by shooting himself with a 40 Stephens rifle, was brought to this city early Tuesday morning by Elmer Mikeman, a brother of the deceased. That noon he came in from his work on the farm and took his team to the barn and left without feeding them, going to the residence and accrued his Stephens rifle and on doing asked by his wife, what he was going to do with the gun, said he was going to shoot a hawk. He went out on the porch where his little children were playing and placed the muzzle of the gun at his lower right side and pushed the trigger with a stick that he had prepared with a notch in it, and went his soul into eternity. The bullet ranged upward to the left shoulder, causing instant death. Mrs. Mikeman ran to her husband, as well as his brother, Elmer who was at the barn, but there was nothing that could be done. Neighbors were notified and came to the assistance the bereaved family and gave them all the comfort possible in this their great bereavement. Willie Mikeman, as he was familiarly called by those who were best acquainted with him stood high in the estimation of the people of that portion of Barry County. He was temperate every way a God fearing man and a member of the Baptist Church. He was a very sensitive man and if he owned a man anything and could not pay it, it cowed him and he did not want to see the man owed. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Mikeman, respected citizens of the section of the county and was 29 years of age. He married a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lafe Plummer of that section, who with five little children survive their father, as well as two brothers and three sisters. His brother who was in this city early Tuesday morning said that the most probable cause for the rash act of his brother was an account of his financial condition, as he was considerably involved. He did not register under the draft law in June and rumors assign that as the probable cause. His folk attempted to persuade him, but he refused. Someone remarked to him that the authorities would come and get him and replied "let them come and get me." He was probably contemplating suicide at that time and for sometime before. He was a baseball player and was a member of the Shell Knob team and was a very successful batter. He was a fine specimen of a manhood. A few years ago while cutting a tree down the tree in some way fell on him and badly crushed his jaw bone, knocking out some of his teeth. This might have affected him in some way. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Shell Knob Baptist Church by Rev. Virgil Kimbel, after which the remains were interred in the cemetery near that place. - June 30, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Not Suicide: H. H. Mikeman of near Shell Knob, was in this city on the 22nd and expressed himself as being almost certain that his son Willie Mikeman did not commit suicide on the 18th by shooting himself, because he said that there was no excuse for it. That his financial affairs were in fairly good condition, his domestic affairs were of the happiest, that his health was of the best that he had more friends in that section than nearly anybody. The Stephens rifle that killed him was a short barreled gun and Mr. Mikeman does not believe that a stick was ever needed to touch the trigger to cause the gun to explode, as he could have pushed the trigger with this fingers. It is a very lamentable and sad affair for a young man that is said to have possess s many valuable traits of genuine manhood, to go to an untimely death. How it was done and way will never be known and no one saw the act that can tell how it occurred. His friends in that section cannot conceive of a single motive, as to why he would have done this act. - Another Photo Family History
