(Thompson) McCary - "Age 81 Years, 6 Months, 4 Days" - Research Note: Henry McCary, a farmer residing three and one-half miles SW of Cassville, MO, was born on Nov. 4, 1809, in SC. When eight years of age he went to East TN, where he remained until 1837, at which time he removed to Barry Co., MO. He is of a family of four children. Those living are Josiah, who resides in Vernon, Co., NV, and Henry. The two who are dead are Sarah (who married William Johnson, and lived in KY) and Lindsay. Henry was married in June, 1834, to Jane A. Thompson, a daughter of Thomas and Priscilla Thompson, and to them have been born ten children, five boys and five girls. They are Benjamin Franklin, Francis Asbury, Thomas Benton, Josiah, Nancy Ann, Mary Tennessee, Missouri Jane, John Thompson, Frances Arabella (deceased) and Martha Cordelia. Mrs. McCary was born in Apr. 1816, in Rhea Co., TN. Mr. McCary has served as constable and deputy sheriff of his county at various times, and in 1854 was honored by the Democracy of his county with a seat in the Legislature, and was what is known as a Benton Democrat. He cast his first Presidential vote for "Old Hickory" in 1832. His family residence is on a beautiful farm of 215 acres, under a high state of cultivation. At one time he owned a much larger tract of land, but he has given liberally to his five sons, Benjamin, Thomas B., J. T., Francis and Josiah. It reads that he was single and a farmer and a son of Henry McCary and Jane Alexandra Thompson, both born TN. T. B. McCary of Cassville, MO was the informant. John was thrown from a buggy which resulted in his death. Online obit - This awful announcement went forth Sunday noon that another old and respected citizen of this section of Barry county, had passed away at a time in life, when he had promise of many years. But the reaper of time was in motion, his sickle was sharpened and the brittle thread of life was snapped and John T. McCary went to his reward. John Thompson McCary was the youngest son of the late Hon. and Mrs. Henry McCary, old, highly respected and honored citizens of Barry county, who settled on the McCary homestead 4 miles southwest of this city, in 1837, coming from Tennessee that year to this county, and lived there until death summoned them to another world. John T. McCary was born in April 1852, and over 65 years, 6 months and a few days old at his death. He had lived all his life on the McCary homestead, which he owned at the time of his death, consisting of about 220 acres of valuable land, well improved and a lot of good stock on the farm. About Oct. 2, he was injured by his buggy turning over on him, in the Pasley neighborhood, that produced concussion of the brain from which he never recovered, but lived about two weeks. During that time, he was able to be up and around, but was never right after the accident and gradually grew worse, until Sunday, Oct 15 1916, at 11:30 a.m. when his spirit was summoned from this world. The following are his living brothers and sisters: B.F. McCary Washburn, Josiah and T. B. McCary of near the old home, Asberry McCary of Powell, McDonald County and Mrs. Jennie McCary of Long Beach, CA. He was a member of Pythagoras Lodge A. F and A. M., of this city, and his remains were interred Monday evening with their honors in the McCary cemetery at the old home, with a large number of relatives and friends present to pay their last tribute of respect to his memory. - October 19, 1916, Thursday, Cassville Republican - John McCary Dead - John McCary, a prominent farmer southwest of this city five miles on the Cassville and Washburn road, died at his home Sunday, Oct. 15, at about 12:30 o'clock, following an illness of only a few days. John Thompson McCary was born on the Henry McCary estate, the farm on which he lived and which he owned when he died. This farm known the county over as the Henry McCary farm, was one the oldest settled homesteads in Barry County. John McCary's father, Henry McCary came from Tennessee to Barry County in 1837 and settled on this farm. It has been owned by Henry McCary and his children ever since that date, almost 80 years. Those of the family who have answered death's summons have been laid to rest upon the old homestead in the family cemetery. There were ten children in this family all of whom remained and established homes and became well known citizens of the county. B. F. McCary, Asbury, Thomas and Joe McCary are brothers of the deceased. John McCary had for many years been recognized as one of Barry county's successful and progressive farmers. During the past few years he had purchased the principal part, if not all, of the homesteaded. He was one of the best boasters for good roads in the county and a man who stood for the best business methods in our public affairs. He was strictly honest and was true to this convictions. In his death a large number of our citizens lose a good neighbor and a true friend. The funeral was held Monday afternoon, conducted by the Masonic Lodge of which he had long been a member. - November 16, 1916, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Large Estate Probated - Cam McCary has been appointed by Judge C. M. Landis as administrator of the estate of the late John McCary of near this city. The estate consists of a 250 acres farm on the Cassville and Washburn road, one of the best farms in this part of the country. It is very conservatively valued at $60. per acre or $15,000. There is personal property to the value of about $3,000 and perhaps much more. The estate is thought to be worth approximately $20,000. The heirs are John McCary's brothers, one sister Mrs. Fanny McCary Davis, a daughter of a sister of Mr. McCary. The brothers are Ben, Asbury, Tom and Joe McCary. The sister is Mrs. Jane Mitchell. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, May 23, 1918 - Attorneys James Talbert, J. S. Davis and Judge C. M. Landis went to Marshfield Sunday night to attend Circuit court. The case of Jasper McCary against the brothers of the late John McCary for a share of the John McCary estate, is to be tried at Marshfield this week. J. J. Edens, of this city went as a witness. C. W. Eden south of town also went as a witness. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, Sept. 26, 1918 - The case of Jasper McCary against the estate of the late John McCary which was tried last week at Marshfield was decided in favor of the state. Jasper McCary was represented in the suit by attorneys J. S. Davis and James Talbert of this city and H. A. Gardener of Monett. The McCary heirs were represented by Judge C. M. Landis of Cassville. Son of Henry McCary and Jane Alexandra Thompson. - A GOOD OLD TIME CITIZEN PASSES AWAY - Had Resided in Barry County for the Past Eighty-one Years - Was a Good Man: A worthy man has been called to his great reward in that 'Holy City' where all is love and delight. Where those that had lived the good life on earth are welcomed. Where happiness, love and pure delight abound in endless quantities. Where he will bask in the sunlight of his Great Redeemer and all will be well. His splendid work on earth will follow him. Josiah McCary was born Jan. 18, 1842 on the late Henry McCary homestead, 4 miles southwest of this city, and was a son of the late Hon. Henry McCary and Mrs. Jane McCary, old time and highly respected citizens of Barry County, who came to Barry county in 1830 (should read 1837), from east Tennessee. The deceased grew to manhood in this county and when the civil war came on in the sixties, he with his brothers, B. F., T. B and Asberry, all enlisted on the side of the Confederate states and joined Capt. Joe Peevey's Company, that was organized in the south end of Barry county and served throughout that war and returned home and went to work on the farm and in 1867, he and Miss Mary I. Barr were married, and four children were born to this marriage, two dying in infancy, and Mrs. Thos. Hodge and Cam McCary survive the father. He died Sept. 7th, 1923, aged 81 yrs. 7 months and 19 days, of infirmities of old age. During the Civil War, a woman in the Southland, gave him a testament to read, which he studied during his leisure hours and obeyed its teachings in Confederate Camp and united with the Christian church at Three Camps, Ark., and was baptized by Elder J. H. Mulvy. In his younger days he was very active in church work and remained steadfast to his religious beliefs that were implanted in his mind in those trying days of warfare. Mrs. Jennie/Jane Mitchell of California, is the only surviving sister and all brothers are dead. Josiah McCary enjoyed the high esteem of everybody that had the privilege of being acquainted with him. His integrity was never questioned and he was an unassuming man, and always stood for what he believed was right. After a scriptural reading and a prayer by Rev. Chas. Vanzandt at the late home, Rev. C. F. Rose of Springfield, of the Christian church, preached an impressive sermon to his many relatives, old friends and many neighbors who had assembled to pay the last tribute of love and respect to this good man. Typhoid Fever was the cause of death. - Cassville Republican, November 2, 1911 - Mrs. Mary Louise McCary, wife of Joseph McCary of near the McMurty Spring, southwest of Cassville, died at the family home Sunday morning, Oct. 29 of typhoid fever, age 66 years, 6 months and 12 days. Mrs. McCary's health had been failing for several months and her poor physical condition made it impossible for her to withstand an attack of typhoid. Mrs. McCary was born in Tennessee, April 17, 1845. When a small girl her parents moved to this county. She was married to Joseph McCary in 1867. To them were born four children, two dying in infancy. Those living are Mrs. Nora Hodge, wife of Prof. Thomas Hodge and Cam McCary. Cam lives near his father and Mr. and Mrs. Hodge live west of Cassville 2 1/2 miles. Mrs. McCary was a sister of Scott, Newton, and Columbus Bare all well known in this county. She leaves four sisters living, Mrs. Tennie Brisco, wife of Bart Brisco of Exeter, Mrs. John Weatherly of Joplin, Mrs. Jane Ford, wife of Thos. Ford of Exeter, and Mrs. Vesta Johnson of California. Mrs. McCary was for years, a member of the Presbyterian Church but later she united with the Christian Church in which she remained a faithful member until death. She was a devoted wife and mother and a most excellent citizen. Apoplexy was the cause of death. - Obit: Miss McCary Dead - Died at her Home Southwest of Cassville of Paralysis -- Was 66 Years Old - Miss Tennie Mary McCary daughter of the late Hon. Henry and Mrs. Jane A. McCary, died at the old McCary home, 4 miles Southwest of this city. Tuesday morning, Sept 2, 1913, of paralysis and was 66 years old , and was among our oldest citizens - Miss Tennie was born on the farm where she lived and died, in February, 1847 and was among our oldest citizens. She was highly respected by all of her acquaintances. She was of a retired disposition and remained at home, looking after her domestic affairs, where she and her sister Miss Nannie, Thos. B. and John McCary all made their home, hardly ever leaving home and it was her pleasure to do so. She was a good citizen and was a believer in the religion of Jesus Christ. Rev. J.W. Ennis of near this city, conducted funeral services at her late home Wednesday afternoon, where a large number of old time residents and friends had assembled to pay the last respect to a good woman, after which the remains were laid to rest in the McCary family Cemetery. All her brothers and sisters were present at her funeral, excepting Mrs. Jane Mitchell of Long beach, Cal. Research Note: She was a daughter of Henry McCary, born SC, and Jane Alexandra Thompson, born TN. - Cassville Democrat, Jan. 1916 Another splendid citizen has passed to the great beyond, leaving five brothers, one sister, and many other relatives and friends to mourn her passing. For seventy-one years , 7 months and twenty-one days, all the days of her lie she had been a resident of this county and had resided at the McCary home, 3 3/4 miles southwest of this city. She was a daughter of the late Hon. and Mrs. Henry McCary, well known and highly respected citizens of this county during life. She was born May 26, 1844 at the McCary homestead. Miss Nannie McCary died Jan. 24, 1916 of nephritis. Her family was well known to all the older families of this county and she enjoyed the esteem and respect of everybody who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. She leaves five brothers and one sister to morn her passing, as follows: B. F. McCary of near Washburn Joe McCary of near Exeter, Asberry McCary of near Fairview Thos. B. and John McCary and Mrs. Jennie Mitchell of near this city. Funeral services were conducted Thursday at the McCary home, by Rev. E. W. Love of this city after which the remains were interred in the family cemetery on the McCary homestead. - Feb. 3, 1916, Thursday, Cassville Republican - The funeral of Miss Nannie McCary was held at the McCary home southwest of this city five miles, Thursday, January 27, conducted by Rev. E. W. Love. Interment was made in the family cemetery on the old home place. Miss McCary was born on the old McCary homestead May 26, 1844. For more than 71 years of her life she had lived in this county. She was the daughter of Henry McCary who came to this county in 1837 and settled on the farm, with a much larger body of land, which has ever since been the McCary home. In the year 1854 Henry McCary represented Barry County in the Missouri legislature. He was for many years one of the county's leading citizens. She leaves five brothers and a sister. They are B. F. of Washburn, Asbury of Fairview, Joe of Exeter, Thomas and John and Mrs. Jennie Mitchell of Cassville R. F. Research Note: Jane McCary married Joseph W. Mitchell on May 10, 1887 in Barry Co., MO. Mrs. M. Jane (McCary) Mitchell Passes - Dies at Long Beach, CA -Interment Made at Exeter: The last of an old time and respected family of Barry county has passed to her reward and is the last one of the original family of the late Hon. Henry and Mrs. Jane McCary, well known and highly respected citizens of this county. Mrs. M. Jane (McCary) Mitchell died January 14, 1925, at her home in Long Beach, Calif., at the age of 78 years, and 7 months. She was born four miles southwest of Cassville, on the state highway, June 14, 1846. Her father, Hon. Henry McCary died May 8, 1891, aged 81 years and 6 months; her mother, Mrs. Jane McCary, died Dec. 7, 1887, at the age of 61 years and 8 months. Her son, Henry McCary of Long Beach, Calif., survives the mother, as well as several nephews and nieces. He accompanied the remains. The remains arrived at Exeter Monday and were conveyed to the home of her nephew, Campbell McCary, where Rev. Chas. Vanzandt conducted impressive funeral services.
