SSW: Frank Joseph - Research Note: This is a double stone but Leland's side is blank. Obit - She was born in Exeter, MO on October 20, 1911 to Earl Lee and Leland Jan (Jordan) Smithson. She attended Vanzandt Grade School and graduated from Exeter High School in 1929. She graduated from Joplin Junior College and Monett Business College. In 1941, Leland went to work in Washington, D.C. for the Commodity Exchange Authority. She met her future husband, Francis Joseph Salamon there. Leland and Frank transferred to Chicago, IL to work at the Board of Trade and were married in Chicago on May 20, 1944. Leland worked as a Comptroller for the Commodity Exchange Authority until her retirement on December 1, 1971. Upon retirement Leland and Frank moved to Rogers, AR. After Frank's death on July 4, 1988, Leland moved to Columbia, MO to be near family. She would move between Rogers and Columbia over the next 23 years to be near family in both places. Survivors are nephews, nieces, great nieces and great nephews. Research Note: He was single and in the grocery business. He was a son of Jesse Sanders and Ida M. Anderson, both born in TX. His wife was Kizzie Burton. J. D. Sanders of Center, TX was the informant. Jesse was accidentally killed on the railroad. - May 30, 1912, Thursday, Cassville Republican - J. B. Sanders was run over and instantly killed by the Cassville and Western engine and coach near Exeter early Monday morning. He was walking on the track near the freight house when the car which was backing down the track struck him. There was a freight train switching on the near by Frisco tracks and no doubt he did not distinguish the two trains. The C. and W. crew did not know of the accident till after they had reached Cassville. Mr. Sanders was a man of 30 years of age. He served in the Spanish-American War with our fellow townsmen, Mr. Kinnaman. He had been picking berries at Exeter during the past week. His parents live in Texas and his reminds have been sent to them (incorrect). - November 27, 1913, Thursday, Cassville Republican - The case of H. A. Gardner vs. Cassville and Western railroad company, in which the plaintiff was claiming $10,000 damages for the estate of J. B. Sanders who was run over and instantly killed by the Cassville and Western engine and coach in May 1912, came up in circuit court Monday. SSW: Chester C. - Research Note: She was the second of five daughters born to George Albert Thomas and Nola Mae (Wiley) Thomas. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and step-mother Glenn; her four sisters, Clara, Lora, Jewell, and Eula Mae; and most of her seventy-five cousins. She attended grade school at Leann and her first year of high school at Jenkins Jobe High School. After the death of her mother, her father moved his family to Cassville to work for his sister, the county treasurer. Eileen graduated with the 1933 class of Cassville and received a scholarship to Joplin Business College. After finishing college, she worked for the Barry County Hospital for Drs. George Newman and Poor. Later she worked as deputy circuit clerk in the Barry County Courthouse and continued there until shortly after marrying in 1938. On July 23, 1938, she and Chester Sanders of Shell Knob were married at the home of her cousin, Aubrey Thomas and his new wife Eunice. Eileen and Chester lived and farmed in the Shell Knob/Viola area until buying a farm near Wheaton in 1949. They organized the first 4-H club and extension homemakers club in the Wheaton area and actively supported the university extension council and service. On June 24, 1983, Chester was killed in a tractor accident and shortly after, Eileen moved to Wheaton. Eileen trained as a Laubach reading tutor, teaching adults to read, and volunteer tutored at the Cassville AEL/GED class in the late 1990's, served on the Area for Aging Council, delivered Meals on Wheels until she was 87, and visited and chauffeured "old" people. She was an original member of the South Barry County Hospital (now Mercy) board, serving for 24 years. Research Note: He was a son of Sanford N. and Anne (Reed) Sapp. His wife was Alma Sapp. - Cassville Republican, May 10, 1934 - Preston Sapp passed away at his home north of Exeter Thursday night, May 3, after having been confined to his bed for two months of ulcers of the stomach. Preston was 23 years old. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Sanford Sapp, and a grandson of the late Newt Sapp for many years one of the substantial citizens of his community. Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock, Saturday afternoon, May 5, at the Calvary Baptist church northwest of Exeter of which he was a member. The services were conducted by Rev. C. M. Smith and Rev. Fred McPhail. Burial was made in the cemetery near the church, under the direction of the W. D. Koon Funeral Service of this city. After graduation, he then attended the University of Arkansas and Texas Tech University, where he completed his degree in Petroleum Engineering. He honorably served in the United States Army and retired from BP global. He enjoyed his work and travel as a Petroleum Engineer and earned several honors presented to him in distinction of his service. His work required frequent moves to new areas throughout his career living in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico and his favorite Alaska. On June 2, 1956 he was united in marriage to Anna Lee Burton in Boonville, Arkansas. To this union two daughters were born. Ann preceded him in death on June 25, 2008 after 52 years of marriage. In 2010 he was reunited with his life long friend Samantha (Sammy) Hudson of Exeter, MO. They were united in marriage on February 14, 2010 in Cassville. They moved to Knoxville and then in 1976, to Rogers, Arkansas, where she continued to reside even after Kermit's death in 1992. He was united in marriage to Hazel England Dec. 18, 1936, and to this union was born one son, Jerry Jean, who is now about 20 months old. Besides his wife and son he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Slagle of Ridgley, six sisters, Mrs. Robert Harrison of Exeter, Mrs. Olen Brattin of Ridgley, Mrs. Arthur Crided of Ridgley, Esther, Luelle and Mildred at home; one brother, William at home; two nieces; five nephews, also a number of other relatives and a host of friends. He obeyed the Gospel in 1931 and was a member of the Church of Christ living a faithful life. His last words to his wife was for her and his loved ones to meet him in heaven. E. Smallwood of the Shoal Creek Community east of Wheaton, was stuck by an automobile Friday afternoon near the canning factory on Shoal Creek, and fatally injured. He lived only a few hours after being taken to Stella Hospital. Charles was about six years old. He was walking around a bystanding car when he was stuck by a car driven by a young woman, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Weaver who live near Wheaton. The Koon Funeral Services of Cassville brought the body to Cassville where it was prepared for burial. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Exeter Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Research Note: He first married Eliza Virginia Swiger, daughter of Peter and Anna (Allen) Swiger. According to his death certificate, he was a son of William Stark and Nancy Elizabeth (Bandy) Smith. He was a minister. It reads that he was born in Hamilton Co., TN, but family data has his birth in Rhea Co., TN. Margaret Smith (second wife) was listed as his wife's name. - SMITH FUNERAL RITES, Large Crowd Attended Beautiful Service. With his three sons, all ordained to the ministry, taking part, and with twenty Baptist ministers composing a choir and acting as pallbearers, active and honorary, the funeral of Rev. C. M. Smith was held at the Community Hall in Exeter thanksgiving afternoon. The service was beautiful and most appropriate as a final tribute to a useful and good man who had for more than forty years served the people of this county and Southwest Missouri as a minister of the Gospel. The crowd was the largest ever to attend a funeral service in Exeter. Friends of Rev. Smith and his family from every part of this and many adjoining counties attended. No church building in Exeter and Cassville would have accommodated one-third of those who came for the service. In the casket covered with beautiful flowers, the body lay in state at the community hall for two hours. ____ _____ the service that all who wished to do so could have an opportunity to pass by the casket for a final look into the face of their former minister and good friend. As had been previously announced Rev. Smith's three sons officiated in the service. Rev. J. Bert Smith of Liberty commented feelingly on his father's private life. He sketched interestingly the events of his early life, the establishment of a home and his struggles to overcome a defective education and start in preaching. He narrated a number of incidents of the hardships which his father had to undergo in getting about over the county and carrying the gospel message to communities which had no church buildings. Rev. W. Holt Smith now head of the department of history in William College at Liberty gave an account of his father's public life. He spoke with deep feeling and his part in the service was especially impressive. Rev. C. Willard Smith, now superintendent of schools in North Kansas City, talked on "My Father's Philosophy of Life". Simplicity, courage of his convictions, and undaunted faith in God, as well as his sense of humor and practical viewpoint manifested by his father upon every important occasion, were pointed out as revealing his philosophy of life. A line from one of Rev. Smith's favorite poets, Eddie Guest, was quoted by Rev. Willard, as showing how cheerfully he viewed death. The line quoted was this: "Good-bye, old world, I have had a good time". Rev. Chas. F. Siler, pastor of the Baptist church in Cassville, presided and gave the scripture reading; Rev. Chas. Vanzandt, pastor of the Baptist church in Exeter, Rev. Smith's home, led in prayer; ministers of the Baptist church composed the choir; a quartet from Seligman where Rev. Smith was still pastor when he took seriously ill a short time ago, also sang. Charles Marion Smith, 76, Baptist minister in southwest MO for 40 years, died today at his home near here. Three minister sons will conduct the funeral services Thursday afternoon in the Exeter community building. They are the Rev. J. Bert Smith, Liberty; Dr. Holt Smith, history department, William Jewell College, Liberty, and the Rev. C. Willard Smith, Kansas City. He was ordained at the age of 36, served as moderator of the Barry County Baptist Association and held offices in the Missouri Baptist General Association and the Southern Baptist Convention. Smith Dead - Another home has been made very sad by a visit of the death angel, who claimed an excellent wife, mother, citizen and neighbor. She believed that "every word of God is pure; he is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him." She trusted in Him and will be blessed with eternal life and happiness and will be a beacon light for those left on earth to welcome them into the Holy City. Mrs. Smith was born and reared in Barry County and was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Swiger former residents of near Purdy and a sister of the late Rev. J. A. Swiger of Purdy. She and Rev. C. M. Smith of near Exeter were married many years ago and eight children survive the mother, who are: Bert and Willard, who are studying for the ministry at William Jewell College, Liberty, W. Holt Smith, who is also studying for the ministry at Rochester, N. Y., Mrs. Elmun Thomas, Mrs. L. M. Davidson and Mrs. W. B. Smith of Monett, Mrs. Ed Bridgman of Wichita, Kans., and Miss Violet Smith of St. Louis. She died Wednesday morning March 10, 1920 at the home near Exeter, of a complication of diseases and after an operation, aged 60 years. Her beautiful Christian life is worthy of imitation by her loved ones. Rev. J. T. Brattin conducted funeral services at the Baptist church in Exeter, Thursday, March 11, where a large assemblage of relatives and friends gathered to pay the last tribute of love and respect to a good woman and citizen. SSW: Amy - Research Note: From Effie Erwin Atwell's Scrap Book - ABE SNOOK DIED LAST MONDAY AT AGE OF 45 - Abraham Lincoln Snook was born in Bolivar, Mo., Feb. 6, 1884 and died at his home near Wayne Dec. 15, 1929. He was 45 years, 10 months and 7 days at the time of his passing. He moved to Barry county with his parents when six years old. He and Amy Louise Michael were married, Oct. 9, 1904. To this union seven children were born, who are Elmus of near Wayne, and Mrs. Oma Lee of Exeter, George, Harold, Garland, Marie and Wentford all at home. He leaves his aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. Snook of Fayetteville, Ark. His wife and children, two brothers and two sisters who are farmers of Monett and Bob of Exeter, Mrs. Ben Hawkins of Anderson and Mrs. Stanley Barnhart of Seminole, Okla., to mourn his passing. He was a good man and leaves a host of relatives and friends to mourn his passing. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. Vanzandt Monday afternoon.
