(Weatherly) Packwood, born at home on Shoal Creek on March 23, 1890, and departed this life at Billings, Montana, on Jan 2, 1939, at the age of 48 years, 9 months and 10 days. His early boyhood days were spent at home, but at about the age of 15 years he went to the West and spent most of his remaining life there. He came to Missouri occasionally to visit his parents and other relatives. His last visit was in the spring of 1937. He had been in failing health lately, but was planning to visit his mother again next spring. He was married to Evelyn Palmer at Billings, Mon., and to this union five sons were born. He was preceded in death by one son, two brothers and his father. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife and four sons who are Burley, Jr., in college at Doberman, Montana and Palmer, Delbert and Otis of Billings, also his aged mother Sarah A. Packwood of Exeter, Mo., and four brothers, Horace, Arthur and Roy of Exeter, Rolla of Kansas City and two sisters, Mrs. Oma Roller of Seligman, Mo., and Mrs. Mamie Barnett of Exeter, and many other relatives and friends. The remains were brought to Exeter where funeral services were held at the Baptist Church on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 7, 1939, by Rev. Chas. McNabb and Rev. Chas. Vanzandt, with burial in Maplewood Cemetery at Exeter under the direction of the Koon Funeral Home. The following nephews of the deceased were acting pall bearers: E. E. Lauderdale, V. N. Barnett, W. A. Packwood, 91 years old, retired farmer, died at 3:30 o'clock this morning at his home in Exeter. He had been ill several years. Born in Barry County, he had lived in this area most of his life. She married Clovis George Packwood in 1930, and he preceded her in death August 22, 1960. - Monett Times, August 17, 1999 - Helen Lucy Packwood, 87, of Wheaton, died August 15 at the home of her daughter in Exeter. Mrs. Packwood was born February 8, 1912, in Eagle Rock, the daughter of Lewis and Julie (Larecy) Smith. She was educated in Barry County, was a homemaker, and a lifelong Barry County resident. She married Clovis George Packwood in 1930, and he preceded her in death August 22, 1960. Survivors include two sons, Verdain Packwood of Wheaton and Harold Packwood of Exeter; two daughters, Imogene Caywood of Exeter and Betty Kaiser of Centerton, Arkansas; one sister, Juanita Bratton of Ridgley; 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m. tomorrow, August 18, at Fohn Chapel in Cassville. General indignities are alleged in the petition. The Packwoods reside on Shoal Creek in Liberty Township and are among the county's best citizens. Mrs. Packwood was a Weatherly before marriage. The petition alleges that Mr. Packwood owns property worth $20,000. Mrs. Packwood asks that she be given half of it. Hadley place from R. E. Elliott 1 mile west of Exeter, and will move to it. - Cassville Democrat, August 21, 1920 - Napoleon B. Packwood was born Liberty Township, on June 20, 1856, and died on Aug. 8, 1920, aged 64 years, 1 month and 19 days. He had been in failing health for two years, caused by a kidney trouble and other complications and declined rapidly during the last 6 months of his illness. On Aug. 5, 1877 he and Miss Sarah A. Weatherly were married and to this union were born 9 children, 7 of whom survive the father, Edgar having died in 1901 and Otis in June of this year. Those living are Horace, Arthur, Roy, Rolla and Mrs. Arthur Barnett of Exeter, Mrs. Orville Roller of Washburn and Burley of Billings, Montana. He left 3 brothers and 4 sisters, who are: George, Jesse and Mrs. Frank Overton, Mrs. George Weatherly and Mrs. Thos. McClure of near Exeter and Samuel of Washington and another sister in the West. He professed faith in Christ about 1901. Rev. C. M. Smith of Exeter, conducted funeral services at the Baptist Church in Exeter, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Maple Wood Cemetery. He was born on the farm where he died and had lived there nearly all his life. All of his children were at his bedside when he died except Burley and he had made two trips to MO this spring to be with his father. - October 16, 1913, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Exeter News: It is reported that Mr. and Mrs. Pole Packwood, living west of Exeter, have the smallpox. - Exeter News: Otis Packwood has the smallpox at the home of his father, Pole Packwood, west of Exeter. This is the third case of smallpox in the Packwood home. - Exeter News: Mrs. Horace Antle went to Ridgley Monday morning to teach the school at that place until Miss Oma Packwood is released from the smallpox quarantine. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, Dec. 11, 1919 - George Powell and family have moved in with N. B. Packwood to keep house for him. - Cassville Democrat, August 21, 1920 - The heirs of the late N. B. Research Note: The photo submitted by Betty is of the grave of Otis Packwood who died June 17, 1920. She says that on the back of the original photo my father has written in his hand, "Mr. Otis Packwood's Grave, My school teacher buried 1920." - The Wheaton Journal of June 18, 1920 - has this death notice - It reads: Dies at Minnesota Hospital - Relatives of Otis Packwood received a telegram this morning stating that he had died late Thursday evening at a hospital in Rochester, Minnesota where he had gone a short time ago for an operation. The deceased was somewhere near 28 years of age and for years has been one of the successful school teachers of Barry County. He taught during this past term at the Oklahoma school a few miles southeast of here. The body will be shipped back for burial. - Cassville Democrat, June 26, 1920 - OTIS PACKWOOD PASSES - Otis Packwood was born June 2, 1893, in Liberty township, on headwaters of Shoal Creek, and was a son of Mr. Napoleon B. and Mrs. Sarah A. Packwood, old and highly respected citizens of this county. He grew to manhood on the farm, attending the country schools and began teaching at the age of 19 years, and was very successful, as all his patrons and scholars speak in living terms of his splendid efforts in advancing their children for the battles of life. He attended the State Normal School at Springfield. On the call of his country for soldiers he went to the army and was at Camp Dodge, Iowa, for five months, but his physical condition proved his inability to become a soldier and he remained in camp five months and was sent home on account of disabilities, with a regular discharge. He returned home and taught the Vanzandt school and had contracted to teach the Independence school the coming year. He took civil service examination for a rural route carrier and when a vacancy occurred on Route 1, Cassville, he was awarded the position, but declined it on account of his physical condition. He continued to grow worse, until about June 1 he went to Mayo Bros., Hospital at Rochester, Minn., where he was operated on June 8, for an intestinal trouble, without using chloroform or either. He revived from the operation and seemingly was improving and lived until June 17, when he answered the summons of the death angel and went up higher to a better world, aged 27 years and 16 days. On May 10, 1919, he and Miss Ada Jaques, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. S. Jacques, highly respected citizens of this county, who reside at the McMurtry Spring farm, 3 miles southwest of this city on the State Highway toward Washburn, were married. Mrs. Packwood and her father were with Otis when he passed away. The remains were prepared for shipment and were shipped to Exeter, where they arrived on evening of June 19, and were taken to his home 1 mile west of Exeter, where they remained until Monday, June 21, on account of Otis' brother Burley who was coming from Billings, Montana, and he arrived Sunday night. Monday at 2 p. m., the P. E. Horine Undertaking Co., funeral conveyed the remains to the Baptist Church in Exeter where Rev. Wm. Ireland, conducted funeral services, to a very large number of sorrowing relatives and friends. The remains were interred in Maplewood Cemetery near Exeter. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. His father Pole Packwood was unable to attend the funeral of his son on account of serious sickness. He is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Horace R., Arthur T., and LeRoy Packwood of near Exeter, Burley of Billings, Montana, Mrs. Martha Burnett of Exeter and Mrs. Orvil Roller of near Washburn. - He was the son of Napoleon B. and Sarah A. (Weatherly) Packwood - April 23, 1914, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Union Valley News: The Union Valley school closed Saturday, April 18. Otis Packwood has taught us two of the best schools we have ever had taught. The morning session was spent in class work and to show their appreciation of his work the patrons gathered at noon hour and spend a bountiful dinner. The afternoon consisted of a program given by the school. There was two 8th grade graduates. They were Hllary Lantz and Mabel Cole and are the first 8th grade graduates from this school. There were fifteen pupils that attended school every day. We can recommend Mr. Packwood to any district as being a good teacher. She is buried at Maplewood. - Mary Haley, age 37, married George Patterson, age 39, on Dec. 15, 1915 in Barry Co., MO. - Mrs. Mary Patterson, 76 was burned to death and her daughter Mrs. Ellen Ellis was critically burned when their home on the McMurtry Springs Farm, two miles southwest of Cassville, Mo, was destroyed by fire Tuesday forenoon. The fire is thought to have been by an explosion of a coal stove and happened about 11:30. The body of Mrs. Patterson was not recovered until 2:30 after the smouldering ruins had been covered with water. Mrs. Ellen Ellis, 37 had left the house for outside duties when she discovered the fire. She rushed into the house to rescue her children, Dale, age 5 and Wilma, 16 months. She was unable to rescue her Invalid mother because the fire was so intense. Dale was burned about the hands and Wilma about the legs. Mrs. Ellis's burns were of a second and third degree nature on her face and over the body. She died at 1 o'clock this afternoon in the Cassville Community Hospital as a result of the burns. Mrs. Patterson formerly lived in the Jenkins community and the widow of George Patterson. She is survived by her five Grandchildren, Marion, Freda, Wanda, Dale and Wilma Ellis, and a stepson Edward Patterson of Fontana California and a sister Cora Doty. Funeral service were on Sunday, Mar 27, 1955 in The Culver Funeral Chapel. Hospital Records were the informant on the death certificate. - Cassville Republican, June 12, 1913 - Cashed a Bad Check - Saturday night information was placed in the hands of Sheriff Brixey to arrest John Perryman of near Butterfield on the charge of forgery. On Friday, May 27, Perryman presented a check in favor of himself drawn on the First National Bank at Cassville at the Exeter Bank. The check called for $65. The Exeter Bank thinking that the matter was a trusty one did not doubt but what Perryman had a deposit in the bank at Cassville until the check was protested by the Cassville Bank, Saturday. The check had been sent by the Exeter Bank to Springfield, from there to Kansas City and St. Louis and did not arrive at the Cassville Bank until Saturday. After the Exeter Bank was informed that the check had been protested Sheriff Brixey was notified and drove to Perryman's home but was informed that Perryman had left his family and had not been seen in that community for several days. Perryman is a son of the late Allen Perryman and has lived in the county practically all of his life. He is well known in many parts of the county. - Cassville Republican, July 3, 1913 - Perryman Captured - John Perryman, who some weeks ago cashed a check of $65 at the Exeter Bank, drawn on the First National Bank at Cassville, has been captured at Billings, Montana. Sheriff Brixey left Sunday morning for Billings to bring Perryman to this county where he will be held on the charge of forgery. Within a short time after Perryman had left the country, letters came through the Cassville and Butterfield post offices addressed in his name. Sheriff Brixey states these letters were answered by members of Perryman's family in the name of J. W. Williams of Billings, Montana. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Allen Williams who reside in Cassville and Exeter. Old and highly respected citizens of this county. Mr. and Mrs. Purselly were married sometime last spring and were living a happy life at their new home, having been former sweethearts, they had drifted apart but got in correspondence and were married. - Note posted by Sydney Neeley: According to our family data, Susie was born Sept. 20, 1876 (Family Bible lists her as Miny Susan). She was a school teacher and we have her picture. She married Clay Purselly March 14, 1909. She died Sept. 18, 1909 from "childbirth complications according to our family. The obit states from "surgery for removal of tumor!" Her marker is next to that of her parents at Maplewood cemetery, Exeter. It has "Susie Persselly" on it. There is an empty space between and we wondered if maybe her infant son also died and is buried there, but there is no marker. (Some family member said she had an infant son?) Both of Susie's parents, John A. and Hester Ann (Benton) Williams are listed on the double stone next to hers, however, Hester Ann was buried in TX where she died. Harriett died about 1848. Mrs. Lizzie (Nancy Erwin) Pilant (1864-1949) was the 3rd wife of J. F. Pilant. - Cassville Democrat or Republican - January 1933 - J. F. "Frank" Pilant, old time and well known citizen of Exeter, passed away at his home at that place Sunday morning, Jan. 1, 1933, aged 86 years 2 months and 1 day. This high standing character was born in TN, Oct. 8, 1846. His mother died when he was but two years old after which time he moved with his father to TX. He came to Barry County over 45 years ago and engaged in the drug business in Exeter for 42 years, retiring a few years ago on account of declining health. He had been married three times, his last wife being Nancy Erwin who passed on following paralytic stroke a short time ago. (See note below) He was a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellow lodges and had many friends throughout Barry County. He served as Public Administrator of the county several years. He leaves two half brothers, Alfred of Portland, OR, Albert of Exeter and one half sister Mrs. W. S. Hankins (Margaret Anna) of near Oak Ridge, who gave him the best of care in his closing days - Notes from Loretta Pilant Vincent: His DC #121 gives his name as being John Franklin which is incorrect. "Fernando" is the correct name. Information is from family records. His wife Nancy is listed as having died before him but according to her DC # 3974 She died, Jan. 21, 1949. Her headstone has 1949. Maybe if she had a stroke she was being cared for at another location. I don't have any records on this. His first wife was Irene R. Pilant, second wife Manerva Ann (Edwards) Pilant, both buried at Pilant Cemetery. Also an infant born July 18, 1884, died Aug. 29, 1884. Manerva died Aug. 7, 1884. - 1895 Cassville Republican Historic Edition, Page 27 - J. F. Pilant, Pub. Admr., of Exeter, was born in Lincoln Co., TN, Oct, 8, 1846. In 1850 his parents moved to TX where he attended the Sulpher academy three years and played cowboy near Sherman. In 1862 he was ordered to Sherman to join the Confederate forces, but not liking the hanging of two or three hundred of their best citizens he left for Springfield, MO, which he reached with $1.50. Through the influence of Wild Bill he got the contract to take 130 head of government horses to Kidder and made a nice sum. After returning to Springfield he clerked in mercantile businesses for different ones there and elsewhere until 1877 when he came to Barry County and engaged in the drug business with Dr. Speece. This business he has followed, alternately with farming, since, and now engages his attention outside of his office. Jan. 30, 1892, and again Nov. 5, 1892, he was burned out, losing heavily each time. Research Note: Death certificate indexed under Pinkney. - Cassville Democrat, June 7, 1945 - John Pinkley, age 69 years 2 months and 27 days, died at his home in Exeter, Saturday evening at 7 o'clock from high blood pressure. Mrs. Pinkley survives him. In addition to Mrs. Pinkley he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Ada Dell of Exeter and a half brother Gene Prichett of Branson together with four nephews and a host of friends. A daughter, Mrs. Thelma Taylor, preceded him in death over a year ago. Mr. Pinkley was born and reared in Arkansas but had lived at Exeter for many years and was well and favorable known. Funeral services were held at the Exeter Baptist Church by Chas. VanZandt, Monday afternoon. Burial was in Maplewood Cemetery under the direction of Koon Funeral Home. He was a son of Johnathan and Huldah (Huldah Elizabeth Danford) Piper, both born OH. H. B. Piper of Exeter, MO was the informant. The cause of death was accidental gun shot wound. - Cassville Republican, March 5, 1914 - Vora B. Piper, was born at Lebo, Coffee County, Kan., Nov. 6, 1895, and was accidentally shot with a revolver in the hands of an unthoughted [not thoughtful] person, Jan. 9, 1914. The bullet was removed by Drs. Searcy of Exeter and Mitchell of Cassville. He improved seemingly for four weeks but died Feb. 13, age 19 years, 3 months, 7 days. When seven years old he was afflicted with infantile paralysis which caused him to be a cripple for life. Three years ago he was converted at Mt. Pleasant, Kan., and united with the Unite Brethren Church. He was a wonderful Christian boy. His mother, brother, and one sister, and proceeded him to the grave. His father and step-mother, two brothers and three sisters survive him. His step-mother, (Rachel D. Matheney) having known him in youth was a mother indeed. She loved him as her own. Three brothers from Peoria, Kan., attended his funeral which as conduced by Rev. W. P. Owens of the M. E. Research Note: She was a daughter of Pharis and Beatrice (Henbest) Sanders, wife of Charles Price. She grew up on a small Ozark farm. Her memories of hoeing strawberries, making lye soap and butchering hogs have been recorded by Ruth for her grandchildren in a book she left for them. Ruth was one of 11 students graduating from Butterfield High School in 1937. Ruth attended Monett Junior College and went on to the University of Missouri where she graduated in Home Economics with a teaching certificate. Ruth demonstrated her patriotism and pride in her country by volunteering for service in the Navy during World War II. She has maintained friendships with 12 of her fellow WAVES to this day and the story of their friendship was featured in a story on National Public Radio 2 years ago with the dedication of the Women's Veterans Service Memorial in Washington, D.C. Ruth used the GI Bill to earn her Master's Degree from the University of Missouri. She was one of a few women to obtain an advanced degree in the 40's. She taught every level of students throughout her career and also served as a volleyball and basketball coach. She married Charles H. Price in 1951 in Tahlequah and was a devoted mother to 6 children. She was a pioneer for Special Olympics from its beginning in Oklahoma. She organized the first TARS group (Teens Aid Retarded) in the area and was instrumental in establishing employment opportunities for the disabled. His life and acts will be cherished by his family and friends and will be a great consolation to them in their irreparable loss. Thos. B. Pulley, 2 miles northwest of Washburn, was born in Pettis county, Mo., and was 64 years of age. He came to Barry County over 40 years ago and located at Pioneer, where he lived many years and during his residence there was married to Miss Nancy Russell of Newton county and to this union was born five children: four of whom are living and are: Mrs. Bay Smith of Pineville, Mrs. Perry Ledenham of near Washburn, Clarence Pulley at home, and Earl of Wyoming. He passed to the great beyond Sunday night at 10 p. m. Mr. Pulley enjoyed the respect and confidence all his acquaintances and was a member of the Baptist Church and an earnest Christian, whose desire was to accomplish good and aid in making the world better.
