July 31, 1976
Rural Washburn,
Barry Co., MO
Research Note: Son of Joseph M. Lawrence and Olivia "Ollie" S. Neill, both buried at Truelove Cemetery. Died in a farm accident on the farm he had lived on all his life on July 31, 1976 near Washburn, Mo. He was a long time member of the Methodist Church in Washburn. He was the 4th of 12 children and the oldest son to reach adulthood. His siblings were: Nora Lawrence Snook (buried at Rocky Comfort), Golden Lawrence (buried at True Love Cemetery), Wilma Lawrence (buried at True Love Cemetery), Loren Lawrence (buried at True Love Cemetery),Winnie Lawrence Clark (buried at Washburn Prairie Cemetery) Elsie Lawrence Nodine (buried at Washburn Prairie Cemetery), Esther Lawrence Van Norsdall (buried at Ivanhoe, California), Leon Lawrence (buried at Rocky Comfort) and two infant brothers and an infant sister buried at True Love Cemetery. His Grandfather, Martin V. Lawrence, whom Ethel is buried next to, homesteaded a farm 2 miles north and one mile west of Washburn, MO. His father, Marion Lawrence continued farming that land and Ethel stayed on that same farm. He had a dairy operation, raised grapes, strawberries, apples, peaches, and pears. In addition, following in his father's footsteps, he drove a school bus for several years for the Washburn School District. His father and he both served as bus drivers on a contractual basis. They owned the school bus. After he stopped driving the bus route, he had the bus cab cut off of the truck chassis and drove the old 1927 yellow truck as the family vehicle throughout the 1940s and 1950s. The lettering on the truck door read as follows: E. N. Lawrence, Washburn, MO. "by Golly". This "by Golly" was found on many trucks during that time period as the name of the person who did the lettering was named "Golly". Ethel's mother, Ollie Lawrence, used the old cab of the bus as shelter for her young chickens. He continued living with his mother, Ollie Lawrence, until her death in 1959. Having no children of his own, he served as a father figure for several of his nieces and nephews, who spent considerable time living on the farm with Grandma and Uncle Ethel.
