He served with the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. Following the war, he moved to Arkansas and then to Fordland, MO., for four years. He was in the trucking business at Fordland. He moved to Exeter from Fordland 10 years ago. At the time of his death he was employed with George's Processing at Cassville as the truck shop manager for eight years. The deceased was a young man of exemplary habits and good traits of character which gave him the esteem of his associates. Cassville Republican, July 15, 1915 - #1. Porter Jenkins was born in Erie County, Pennsylvania, Feb 23, 1845, where he grew to manhood. In 1862 he enlisted in the Union Army, Pennsylvania, Vols. where he served until the close of the war in 1865. On Feb 8, 1867 he was united in marriage to Miss Hellen D. Wells. To this union were born 7 children, four boys and three girls, four of whom are living. He left the state of Pennsylvania 42 years ago and has lived in several different states. He moved to Barry County Missouri 7 years ago, and bought a farm on the head of Shoal creek where he resided until the day of his death, July the 11th, 1915. He leaves a wife, four children, also his mother, four brothers and five sisters to mourn his loss. He was a kind and affectionate husband, a loving father and a good citizen. The funeral was held Monday at the residence conducted by Rev. T. H. Hickman. The body was laid to rest in Maple Grove Cemetery at Exeter. - #2. Dies From Overheat: Porter Jenkins, a highly respected citizen of Liberty township, died Sunday morning at his home west of Exeter from the effects of overheat on the evening before. Mr. Jenkins was 70 years old. He was at work about his place on Saturday afternoon and was overcome with heat. He seemed to have recovered from the prostration and on Sunday morning did the chores. Johnson vs. Edward Johnson, divorce, dismissed by plaintiff. - March 26, 1914, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Edward Johnson died early Saturday morning at the home of his mother, Mrs. Sarah Johnson, age 35 years, 9 months and 10 days. Death was due to tubercular trouble. He had been in poor health for several months and had recently returned from Eureka Springs where he had been taking treatment. Johnson, born AR, and Sarah Goodman, born TX. - August 15, 1903, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Fred Johnson was arrested Friday of last week, on two charges field by Prosecuting Attorney Kemp, for selling liquor. He gave bond for his appearance at court. - September 8, 1906, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Fred Johnson and Quince Sanders were arrested at Exeter, Saturday, night, charged with raising a disturbance. Fred was brought to jail and gave bond later. Quince gave bond. - June 29, 1907, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Chas. Dowd and Fred Johnson had trouble at Woodruff recently, and Dowd was arrested by Sheriff O'Dwyer Thursday on a warrant issued by Squire James of Exeter Township and plead guilty and paid his fine. Deputy Sullivan arrested Fred Johnson yesterday, on same charge. - August 3, 1907, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Fred Johnson was arrested last week by Constable Brattin of Exeter, on a charge of carrying and exhibiting a deadly weapon at Woodruff recently. Trial was set before Squire Salle of Liberty township for last Monday, but the case was continued to next Monday. C. E. Frost represents the defendant. - April 7, 1910, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Saturday, evening between five and six o'clock, Chas. Bass and Fred Johnson in company with John Parrish, south of town tanked up with liquor and went to the reunion grounds where they secreted themselves in the hollow entering the grounds from the east near the spring for the purpose of card playing. Some trouble arose and Parrish was attacked by Bass and Johnson and was severely wounded on the back of the head. J. W. Turner who at the time was not far away, heard the boys while in the difficulty. Mr. Turner thought the boys must have been on the road leading east from the grounds and started to see what the trouble was. When he approached the hollow he saw Parrish running from the two other boys and saw a rock thrown which struck Parrish on the head and knocked him down. The boys discovering Mr. Turner struck across the hill. Mr. Turner went to Parrish whom he found bleeding profusely. He took him to near Will Hawk's residence and had Mr. Hawk phone for the sheriff. Parrish [Paris] was brought to town and his wounds dressed. He had three gashes in his scalp but no serious injuries. The other boys made their escape but Fred Johnson was placed under arrest Sunday morning. Bass has not yet been found. Parrish claims that the boys attacked him and robbed him of five dollars. Johnson is out on bond. - April 14, 1910, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Officers arrested Charles Bass, south of town, Tuesday night upon a charge of robbery in the first degree. He gave bond. Bass is charged as is Fred Johnson with assaulting and robbing Newton Paris [Parrish] near the reunion grounds here on Saturday evening, April 1. The preliminary hearing will be held Thursday April 14. - At the preliminary held Tuesday before Squire Harry Horine, Fred Johnson was bound over to Circuit Court, upon a charge of feloniously assaulting Newton Paris [Parrish]. Bond was fixed at $500. In another column we stated that John Parrish was assaulted by Chas. Bass and Fred Johnson. Later we are informed that his name is Newton Parrish instead of John. - September 11, 1913, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Thomas Arnold, Elsey Sullivan, Leonard Bayless, Jesse Turner, Fred Johnson, Harris Hudson and Herman VanHook were fined in the mayor's court this week for being intoxicated on the streets of the city and using abusive language to the city marshal. We hope this will never occur again. As is always the case such affairs cause humiliation upon the parties and heart aches to their families. From a mother of one of the above implicated, we've received a special requested by letter not to make mention of the affair. To hold such news from the community would destroy the highest duty of the press to give the news impartially to the community, which it serves. We believe we voice the sentiment of the community in saying such disturbances should no longer be tolerated. - Cassville Republican, Oct. 30, 1913 - Fred Johnson and Chromo Brattin had an altercation at Exeter Sunday night. Brattin was placed in the county jail Monday upon the charge of felonious assault. A hearing of the case is set this afternoon, Wednesday, in Squire Plattenburg's court. - January 20, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - The case of State vs. Fred Johnson charge with exhibiting a pistol at Monett, and brought to this city on change of venue, was dismissed in justices court Tuesday. He paid the costs. - February 10, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Fred Johnson was tried Monday in Squire Sims court with a jury and after hearing the testimony and the lawyers, the jury retired to consider a verdict on a charge of disturbing the peace of Rev. Fisher, proprietor of the Variety Store, on the northeast corner of the square. The jury returned a verdict of guilty and fined him $200 and 90 days in jail. The case was appealed to circuit court. Kersey, one of Barry county's oldest merchants, died at his home in Exeter Monday, Oct. 13, at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 18 days. For several months Mr. Kersey had been growing weaker and had required the closest attention from the members of his family. Mrs. Kersey is now very low and has been quite feeble for months also. Arthur L. Kersey was born in East Tennessee in 1838. When fourteen years old he moved with his family to Sebastian county, Ark. There he was married in 1859 to Miss Nancy C. Hinton. To them three children, Thomas, John D. and (Maud,) Mrs. C.N. Ellston, were born. All live at Exeter. He served in the Confederate army during the Civil war. After the war he located at Granby and engaged in the mercantile business and mining. Later he lived for a while in McDonald county and moved to Exeter in 1887 where he has since lived. Since 1887 he has been associated with his two sons in the mercantile business at Exeter and for a short time at Cassville. He had been afflicted with the trouble for some time. He died very suddenly. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his death. Mr. Kersey has been in the mercantile business at Exeter for a number of years and has resided there for about thirty five years. He is well known and highly respected citizen of that section. Research Note: The tombstone gives her birth date - 24 yrs, 16 days. The obit reads that Mary Kersey was born in 1872 in Arkansas City, KS. Her obit was in the April 1896 paper and is posted in the newspapers and obits of the web site. On her marriage record her name is listed as Susie May Ballard, and it is registered in Barry Co., MO. She was the wife of Thomas S. Kersey. Thomas S. Kersey married Susie May Ballard on May 26, 1890 in Barry Co., MO. - April 2 1896, Cassville Republican - Mrs. Mary Kersery nee Ballard was born near Arkansas City, Kansas, in 1872. The family moved to Marionville, Mo., in 1879, at which place they made their home until 1889 when they moved to Cassville, Barry County, Mo. She was married to Thos. S. Kersey, May 28th 1890. She was converted and united with the Church of Christ under Brother Knox's preaching about four years ago. For about three years she had been afflicted so severely that she was a constant invalid, but was frequently privileged to go to church, out riding or visiting with her friends until within the last few months. During the June meeting in '95 she was an earnest worker and was one of the leading spirits the organization of the church and imitating the erection of the new church which was its foundation about completed. "She rests from her labors, but works follow her." Sister Kersey from her childhood was a Sunday school worker. How many boys and girls, who have been in her classes, and were won to a better life and saved, eternity alone will tell. About two weeks ago she took worse and rapidly sank. On Friday preceding her demise her friends gave up all hope and waited patiently for the end, which came Monday, March 23, at 4:45 p.m. Without any visible struggle or pain she quietly fell "asleep in the arms of Jesus." "Blessed are they that died in the Lord." She was 24 years and 17 days old, a faithful and devoted Christian, an affection wife and companion, and a friend to all. It may be truly said of her that "none knew her but to love her." The exceedingly large and overflowing audience which assembled to participate in the last sad ceremonies bore evidence of the esteem in which she was held. She leaves to mourn her departure, besides the many friends, three sisters, two brothers, a father and a fond and affectionate husband.
