ELLSTON, Annie (GARDNER) Apr. 25, 1846
Navarre,
Stark Co., OH
Mar. 18, 1907
Exeter,
Barry Co., MO
Research Note: Wife of William Thomas Ellston. Mrs. Annie Gardner Ellston was born April 25th, 1846 at Navarre, Stark County, Ohio, and died at the home of her son, C. N. Ellston of Exeter, MO, March 18th, 1907. In early life she professed faith in Christ and became a member of the Presbyterian Church with her father who was known in Navarre as a devoted Sunday School worker. Later in life she joined the German Reformed Church (Presbyterian) and lived a member of that church. Her life has been spent in Southwest MO for the past twenty years, where she was known by multitude of friends. For many years her health has been very poor and for several months previous to her death her suffering was intense, though she bore it with the fortitude of a truly Christian heart. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ sustained her and gave her peace of soul, and when she saw that death was coming she expressed her readiness to go. A son and daughter, two brothers and two sisters and three grandchildren are left to mourn the loss of a beautiful life. Their sadness is shared by a large circle of friends, who for many years have been acquainted with Mrs. Ellston and who have known her only to love and respect her. May the fragrance of her good deeds and of kind heart remain with us many years to inspire us to nobler lives. The funeral services were conducted at the Christian Church and she was laid to rest in the Maple Wood Cemetery at Exeter, to await the call of Him who triumphed over the grave. Online Obit

His death has brought the bitter cup of sorrow to the lips of his relatives and many friends. His was a heart of gold. He was one of natures noblemen in its truest sense -- generous and manly. His was a soul of honor, and his friends and friendships were sacred to him. It is sad at any time to watch the life of a splendid young man ebb away, as the drifting tide, into the great ocean of eternity. Lee Ellston of Exeter, died at that place, Nov. 4, 1918, of influenza and pneumonia at 2:50 p.m., aged 26 years, 4 months and 5 days. He was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. N. She was married to George W. Ervin in Dallas, Tex., April 14, 1875. Her husband preceded her in death on May 21, 1900. She is survived by five children, Mrs. H.P. Stith of Ponca City, Okla., Mrs. W. The regard in which she was held is attested by the profusion of beautiful floral offering and by the host of sorrowing, sympathizing friends who attended the funeral. SSW: Alice W. - Research Note: Civil War Veteran - G. W. Ervin came to Tishomingo Co. MS, from North Carolina in the 1840s with his parents. Married Sarah Jane Martin of Rutherford County, Tennessee, in 1849. She died in 1874. George Ervin served in Warren's Partisan Rangers from the Tupelo, MS, area, where he was captured in Dec. 1862 and exchanged two weeks later. In 1863 he joined Moreland's Alabama Cavalry Bttn, and finished the war in Roddy's 10th Alabama Cavalry. A story told about him in the war says that he was captured by some guerrillas who tied his hands and put him on a mule, meaning to take him into some woods and shoot him. He got his hands free, grabbed a pistol and dared his captors to come in and take him. While he hid out in a thicket, they rode away. He married Alice Wynne in Dallas in 1875. Moved to Missouri in 1890. Robert E. Howard believed his grandfather's middle name was Washington, while others believe it was Walter. No document has been found that would support either. Son of Robert Erwin and Sarah Jane Tennison. Note

The crew told him they feared they could not make it and wanted to wait until the water subsided. While Frank was still on the steps of the coach the water suddenly rose about eight feet, sweeping him from the coach. That was Friday, his body was not found until Sunday four miles below the depot. The train was wrecked where it stood at the depot and a large number of the passengers lost their lives there. Frank was single. He was well known in this part of the county. Leon was a loving pastor and lead most of his churches through remodeling and building. The only thing ever bragged about was the fact he was in the "top ten" of his graduating class at Washburn High (there was only 7 in the class). Leon also lived by his class motto: "Good, Better, Best - Never let it rest - Til the Good is Better and the Better is Best." Leon and his brother Ethel operated the first school bus in the Washburn school district. They picked up other children to ride with them to school in a buggy, pulled by a horse named Fred. - Proven Mayflower Descendant. - Notes from Barbara Erwin: Leon has been proven as a Mayflower descent of John Alden through his great great grandmother mother Mercy (Tilson) (Erwin) Moyer (1798-1868).
