Cassetty. - Obit: Mrs. Percy Cassetty died at the family home in Exeter Thursday afternoon after a long sickness. She was born October 28, 1885 at Golden and has been a resident of the Wayne and Exeter communities for 40 years. Her husband was postmaster at Wayne and retired after 16 years service. Mrs. Cassetty was the former Minnie Maye Hardwick and was a fine woman who had the respect and esteem of all who knew her. In addition to her husband she is survived by two sons, Harry Cassetty of Los Angeles, Calif., and Elmer Cassetty of Beaumont, Tex., a daughter Mrs. Florence Vanable (Venable) of Exeter; two brothers, Hubert (Herbert) Hardwick of Golden and J. W. Hardwick of Cordell, Okla., and four grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at the Williamson Chapel in the Valley with brother Morton Woodward and Rev. Clyde McCormack officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Cleo House, Mrs. Mildred Swearingen, Chester McNabb and Rufus Barnhouse who sang, "Does Jesus Care", "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere", and "Beyond the Sunset", accompaniment of Jackie Swearingen. Pallbearers were Frank Epperly, Chester McNabb, Herbert Cagle, Ernest Lee, Leroy McGruder and Don Parsons. Lung cancer was the cause of death. - Cassville Democrat, 1962 - Percy V. Cassetty, 83, passed away Tuesday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Florence Venable of Exeter. Born June 6, 1878 in the state of Kentucky and as a small child he moved to the Golden community and in 1919 he moved to Wayne, where he was a railroad agent until 1936. He was then appointed Postmaster of Wayne where he served until his retirement in 1950 at which time he moved to Exeter. He was a member of the Exeter Church of Christ. Other survivors besides his daughter include two sons, Harry of San Garbriel,(Gabriel) Calif., Elmer of Beaumont, Texas: two brothers, Charles of Gerlack, Nev., Benton of Salt Lake city, Utah; four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Williamson Chapel in the Valley with Bro. Claude Brown officiating. Dr. Bailey of Cassville is waiting on him. - December 8, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Guy Cole of Liberty township, who went to St. Louis, last week for examination for service in the U.S. Navy was rejected on his physical examination and has returned home. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, Sept. 19, 1918 - Fred Cole and wife received a letter from their son, Guy Cole, stating he was somewhere in England and was well and had enjoyed his trip so far. He is with the 88th division. - Cassville Republican, Sept. 4, 1919 - Healthy Soldier Kept in Hospital - Guy Cole, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cole west of Exeter arrived home Monday, having received his honorable discharge from the army. He looks the very picture of health and says he never felt better. Guy landed in the United States from France June 16 and was sent to Camp Merritt, examined and sent to Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Ind., to be discharged. In place of being discharged, he was kept there unit the 28th of June and then sent to General Hospital No. 21 and kept there for 31 days before they gave him his discharge. This discharge was not then given until his mother wrote to Congressman McPherson that her son had been sent from Camp Merritt to Ft. Benjamin Harrison to be discharged in June and was being held in a hospital with nothing the matter with him. The following obit says he was buried in Concord Cemetery but his stone is in Maplewood. Death certificate says he was born in IL, obit says OH. - Cassville Republican, August 29, 1918 - Charles Cole departed this life August 19, 1918. He was born August 26, 1877 in Knox County, OH. He came to this county with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Cole, when he was about eight years old. In 1898 he was married to Miss Ora Bowman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Bowman, of this county. To this union five children were born, two boys and three girls, one girl having preceded her father to the great beyond. Those living are Ralph, Maude, Della and Joe. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and had always been a faithful member. The funeral services were held at the Concord Church, conducted by Rev. McCaslin, and interment made in the Concord cemetery. For ten weeks he suffered intensely but bore his suffering with Christian fortitude. Everything was done for him that loving hands could do. Mr. Cole has been making an investigation of the value of the sweet clover as a feed, as a pasture and as a fertilizer and is convinced that it is worth giving a trial on Barry County farms. A number of farmers in this county will be glad to know what success these men have with their experiments. - Cassville Democrat, Nov. 3, 1928 - William Cole Dead - William Henry Cole, one of Barry county's old timers and highly respected citizens passed away at his home in Liberty township west of Exeter on Oct. 30 at the age of 78 years, 8 months and 24 days, after an illness extending over a period of some months. He was born in Shelby County, Indiana, and came to Barry County many years ago, settling on a farm. He is survived by his aged wife and three sons, Fred, William and Charles, who live near him, three daughters, Mrs. Lucy Fairchilds of Iowa, Mrs. Maggie Lacey of Liberty township and Mrs. Nellie Bass-Norville of Wheaton. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Exeter Tuesday afternoon conducted by Eld. J. S. Crane Passed into life eternal at Exeter, Barry Co., MO., on July 8, 1920, after a lingering illness, James C. Crane, eldest son of the late Col. Joseph and Margaret Ellen (Isler) Crane, of Charles Town, W. Va., in his seventy-fifth year. At the commencement of the War between the States James Crane, then sixteen years old, was a cadet at the Virginia Military Institute, which he left to join Company B, 12th Virginia Cavalry, commanded by Capt. R. W. Baylor, afterwards by his son, Capt. George Baylor, in Rosser's Brigade. In his notes made on the margin of a pocket Testament, young Crane tells of the intense cold of the winter of 1864 on the raid to Beverly, Va. "My feet were terribly frozen," he writes, "while in camp at McDowell. Rosser, with three hundred and fifty men, captured over eight hundred Yankees of the 169th Ohio Infantry from Dayton. Our turkeys did not come up; rations scarce." In the battle of the Wilderness, May 4, 1864, he states: "Our brigade repulsed Wilson's whole division for three days, also fought Gregg's Division on the 6th. On that day I was severely wounded and was taken to the hospital in Staunton, where for several months I was tenderly cared for by the volunteer nurses of that city, among whom were Mrs. Matilda Trout, Mrs. Anna Forrest, Mrs. William Harman, and others. God bless these noble women!" This wound caused him much suffering through life. After recovering he reentered the service and fought to the end. After the surrender he went to St. Joseph, Mo., and in 1867, with two companions, he walked from St. Joseph, via Arkansas, Alabama, and Georgia, to his home in Charles Town (now W. Va.), Va. There was no braver private in the Confederate service than James Crane. He had been a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, for twenty-five years. He was married in 1873 to Miss Nellie Leith, of Loudoun County, Va. Ten children were born to them, four of whom survive him--two sons and two daughters. Research Note: Colonel Wesley James Curtis, US Army Retired, only son of Walter Jonathan and Annie Clara (Bashe) Curtis, died of complications from Alzheimer's. Wesley spent his youth in Seligman, MO where he graduated from high school prior to attending Drury College. After two years there, he enlisted in the US Army. He then received an appointment to the U S Military Academy at West Point, entering in July 1939. While a cadet, he met Irene Helen Kinnaird and they were married in her hometown of Garrison, NY on Nov. 23, 1946. Wesley was commissioned in the infantry. He fought in the Luzon Campaign of 1945, in the Philippines, and afterward was on occupation duty in Japan. During the Korean War, he was wounded at Chosin Reservoir in Nov. 1950; he then commanded a battalion in the spring of 1951, offensive. After attending the Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, he commanded a battalion in Germany, taught at Ft. Leavenworth and again served during the Vietnam War as a senior advisor and then post commander of Long Bihn the largest US Army post there. He finished his 30 year career supervising Army Reserves in New England. He was a permanent Colonel in the Regular Army. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge with star and Purple Heart; his meritorious decorations were the Legion of Merit, twice; Bronz Star, three times; Army Commendation Medal, three times, and Air Medal. He retired from the Army in Jan. 1973 and he and Irene moved to Springfield, MO. He worked several years in the City of Springfield Planning and Zoning Office before permanently retiring. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Betty Curtis; his brother-in-law and childhood friend Robert Fawver. Interment with military honors were at Exeter Cemetery, Barry Co., under Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home of Springfield, MO. - Irene's obit is at findagrave.com.
