Son of William Henry Bradford and Sarah Edith Lakey. - October 14, 1909, Cassville Republican, Barry Co., MO - Accidentally Shot: Thursday morning while Dean Burris and step-son, John Bradford, age 20 years, son of Cap Bradford of near Eagle Rock, were out hunting, a shotgun in the hands of Burris was discharged and John Bradford received full effect of the shot in the leg about half way between the knee and ankle joints. Burris was only about ten feet from Bradford when the gun was accidentally discharged. The discharge tore a hole through the limb leaving the skin and the attaching muscles on the outside and on the inside of the limb intact. The inner bone of the limb was completely broken while the other bone was also broken and badly shattered. The limb was in such a condition that amputation was necessary. The accident occurred about 8 o'clock Thursday morning. Dr. Kelly was called immediately and a call was also made at once for assistance from Cassville physicians Drs. Rawhauser and Mitchell went and amputated the limb Thursday afternoon. Bridgman who departed this life Sunday, April 30, 1911, at his home near Exeter, was born in Campbell County, Tenn., March 25, 1844, being at death 67 years, 1 month and 5 days old. When a boy he moved with his parents to Georgia where he grew to manhood. He was married to Syntha Barron in 1867, June 7. Several years later he and family moved to Vernon County, this state, where they lived until about twenty-five years ago at which time they moved to the farm near Exeter. To Mr. and Mrs. Bridgman were born nine children, five of who are now living: Mrs. Emma Eden, wife of Grant Eden of Liberty township, Miss Arra, John, Miss Jennie and Ed, who with the exception of John are yet at home. He was a soldier in the federal army during the war of the rebellion, serving for two years in Company B 9th Tenn. Cav. He enlisted in 1863 and did service unto the close of the war. He was the son of Isaac Bridgman and Jane Butler. - Cassville Republican, August 8, 1895 - G. Bidgeman and wife of La Junta, Colorado, are visiting the former's uncle, J. E. Bridgman on the Exeter road. On the 15th, he cashed his check and started home. When within a few feet of his door a footpad endeavored to hold him up and a skirmish ensued. Duncan, died the night of March 23rd, age 81, or 82 years. She was the mother of Mrs. John Briscoe of Exeter, and Hon. Thos. Cunningham of Joplin. She was the widow of the late Judge John I. Duncan, a well known and highly respected citizen of this county during life. The remains were laid to rest at Joplin. Mrs. Duncan spend a large part of the last winter with her daughter Mrs. John Briscoe at Exeter. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at Empire Street Baptist Church after which the remains were laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev. G. L. Shockley. Research Note: Cassville Democrat, Sept. 15, 1928 - "Old Time Exeter Citizen Succumbs After Extended Illness With Heart Trouble." Exeter and Barry county lost another one of its old time and highly respected citizens, Wednesday, when James Barton Briscoe passed away at his home in Exeter, following an illness extending over the past few months with a valvular heart ailment. Mr. Brisco was a man that stood high in the estimation of all his acquaintances and was always found on the side of right. He raised an honorable family, four daughters, who were all at his bedside when the end came peacefully at his home. James Barton Brisco was born October 6, 1850 in the state of Arkansas, and was a son of the late James Brisco, a native of Tennessee. He came to this county many years ago where he has resided continuously ever since. He engaged in farming and was an honest, hard-working man, and was a consistent member of the Baptist church. His age was 70 years, 11 months and 6 days. The deceased was first married to a daughter of the late Uncle Ben McCary, a highly honored and old time citizen of this county, who resided at Washburn. Four children were born to this marriage, who are all living and attended their estimable father during his illness and death, and who are: Mrs. Dema Egger of Iowa, Mrs. Fannie Drinkwater of Colorado, Mrs. Tennie Pierce of Texas and Mrs. Lula Eidson of California. His first wife preceded him in death several years ago, after which he was again married to Mrs. T. C. Griffin, a highly respected citizen of Exeter, who was a sister of the late Newt Barr, one of this county's honorable citizens during his lifetime and Scott Barr, a highly respected citizen of Exeter. No children were born to the last marriage. - Death Certificate: He was the son of James Brisco and Martha King (James Briscoe married Mrs. Martha Ann King on Sept. 29, 1844 in Barry Co., MO). Phyllis' note: James' first wife is buried at King/P. E. Roller Cemetery and SSW her brother Thomas R. McCary. She is listed as Charlotte (McCary) Briscoe, born Oct. 5, 1857 and died Jan. 17, 1889. SSW: Norma - Research Note: - Cassville Democrat, May 10, 1945 - "HUGH BRIXEY DEAD AFTER MONTHS OF PATIENT SICKNESS" The passing of Hugh S. Brixey, former sheriff and superintendent of Roaring River State Park, brought relief to patient sufferer of months despite the tender and loving care of members of his devoted family. Death came Sunday morning at 2:15 at the family home on Gravel Street. The death of Mr. Brixey was not unexpected because his condition had been serious for weeks and was such as to cause anxiety of friends for more than a year. He was afflicted with arthritis. He was a son of the late former sheriff G. M. Brixey and was born on Washburn Prairie on July 7, 1888, and lived in this community his entire life and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. Aside from serving a term as sheriff and 11 years as park superintendent he was engaged in farming. He filled both official positions in a courteous and efficient manner. Before retiring from the park operation he had a contract for garbage at Camp Chaffee, Ark. and carried the business on in a successful manner in connection with a son-in-law, Amos Horner. It was during this time his health became so serious and forced him to retire from the business and the privacy of his home with a hope of regaining his health. His mother was a daughter of the well-known Montgomery family of the county. Surviving are Mrs. Brixey and two daughters, Mrs. Amos Horner and Mrs. Harry Stacey and four grandchildren. A son Lt. Hugh S. Brixey, Jr. was killed in a plane crash in China. An Air Medal was recently made him posthumously; Mrs. Brixey is the former Norma Thomas, daughter of C. A. Thomas, also a former sheriff and well-known citizen. KILLED IN PLANE CRASH IN CHINA" Combined cable and telegraph lines ticked the sad news of the death of Lt. Hugh Brixey, Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Brixey of Cassville, in an airplane crash over China, Sunday October 15. The news stilled the voices of the many friends of this fine young man who died, like many other, that the principles of the country may live and freedom assured everyone. The news came Tuesday morning in a message from the War Department. There were no details, Mrs. Brixey was here with her parents-in-law where she had made her home since her husband went overseas. Lt. Brixey was a native of this community and a young man held in the highest esteem and respect by all who knew him. He was graduated from the Cassville High School and attended the universities of Missouri and Arkansas, enlisting in the Air Corps from the latter over two years ago. He was about 26 years of age. After intensive training in California and other western air fields he was assigned to the supply command and stationed in India to take supplies to the United States forces in China. He was expecting to receive a furlough in a short time and visit home by Thanksgiving was being anticipated with great glee by Mrs. Brixey and his parents, who were making great plans for the occasion. Surviving besides those named are two sisters, Mrs. Amos Horner, temporarily located in Arizona where her husband is employed, and Mrs. Harry Stacey of Miami, Okla. On Nov. 4, 2006, in Eureka Springs, Ark., he married Jean Najera. Besides his son he was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lula Geene Cole. He received his education at Washburn, graduating from high school in 1956. After living in Kansas City several years, he moved back to Exeter and started Brown's Farms and raised cattle. In 1971 he bought the Ford dealership and built a new building at the four-way stop, naming it Brown's Ford Sales, Inc. he helped build the Cassville Airport and the first hanger. In 1979 he purchased Farmers Livestock Auction, Inc. at Springdale, Ark., and a year later started his first trucking company, L.D. Brown and Associates, Inc., and Missouri Eastern Leasing, Inc. Four years later he bought his own authority, American Farmland, Inc. During that time he went to Sierra Leone, Africa, where he engaged in mining diamonds and traveled to Beirut, Lebanon, where his jewelry was designed and crafted, returning to Springdale, where he opened the Golden Nuggett Jewelry Store in Fayetteville. They are William Elmer and James Lee of the home; Mrs. Viva Jewell Thompson of Exeter; Chas Fredrick of Ft. Smith, Ark., and George Ralph of Cassville. Her husband, William Grant Browning, passed away, January 12, 1911. She is survived by her children, one brother, W. F. Spahr of Monett; one half-brother, George Leonard of Farmington, Mo., and one half sister, Mrs. Sarah Cameron of Webb City; also the following grandchildren; Sgt. Stephen C. Thompson of the U.S. Army; Roy Newton Thompson of Exeter; Helen Louise Browning of Cassville, and many other relatives. She had a host of friends and neighbors and held in high esteem by those who knew her. She professed faith in Christ many years ago, and united with the Baptist Church. At the time of her death, she was a faithful and devoted member of the Exeter Baptist Church. She had been in failing health for several years. She was given every care and attention that her children could render to her. Browning of Exeter now have three sons in the United States Navy. Their youngest son, Willis, received word Sunday that his application for enlistment had been accepted and instructed to report at St. Louis. Their oldest son, Key, is in training at Great Lakes. He was offered a promotion as First Commander in his company a short time ago but declined it and asked for a transfer to the mechanical department of the aviation corps which was granted. He is in training to become a gas motor expert. A second son, Charles is in training at San Francisco, Calif. and expects to be ordered to sea soon. Mr. and Mrs. Browning have a fourth son who is classified in class II B and has offered his services in the medical reserve corps.
