Research Note: Joy Romulus Petty entered this world September 5, 1922, on a flint rock farm in Barry county Missouri. He was the eighth of nine children born to Elsie and Isaac Petty and has three siblings from his father's second marriage. Joy served in WWII and was stationed on an island Air Base in Guam for the final bombing assaults on Japan. After the war, Joy returned to Ukiah, California and married Alma Myers. Joy was pre-deceased by his son's (Harold Petty and Jimmy Petty), his parents, one brother and seven sisters. As anyone who knew Joy would tell you - HE LOVED TO FISH!! -but didn't particularly like to eat them. He and his brother (Vern) fished regularly at Roaring River State Park in Cassville, Missouri and he was always looking for someone to give the fish he caught away to. He also loved to hunt mushrooms and was noted for finding some of the largest "chicken of the wood's" ever seen in Barry County. F. M. Smallwood. She was a kind and devoted wife and mother and a Christian woman. She professed faith in Christ in early youth. Her funeral was preached at Mano Church in the presence of a large congregation of relatives and friends by Bro. M. Smith after which the remains were laid in the Mano Cemetery to await the resurrection morning. Her death certificate reads that her father's name was Able Humphreys, born in VA, and that her mother was Mary Ann Harrison, born in VA. Belle was a widow and George Stever was given as her husband's name. It reads that she had lived in the community most of her life. The cause of death was chronic nephritis. Burial was in Rock Creek Cemetery, and O. W. Stever, Eagle Rock, MO, was the informant. - May 5, 1910, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Mano News: Mrs. Geo. Stever received a telegram Saturday from the railroad agent at Exeter that her brother, Charley Humphrey, had died the night before at Pine Bluff, Ark. Research Note: The paper gave his age as 84 years old and spelled his name as Toller. His death certificate gave his name as Towler and his parents as Elisha and Elizabeth (Phillpot) Towler, both born in KY. He was widowed, a preacher and a father. His daughter Elizabeth Eagleston gave the information. His wife was Nancy in the 1880 census. His son Elisha Towler is buried in Easley Cemetery. - Cassville Republican, April 7, 1910 - Sam Gillmore and B. Holman of Mano were here Monday. They reported the death of John Toller who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Eagleston, near Mano. John Toller was 84 years of age and one of the pioneers of that section of the county. He was a good citizen and lived a quiet life, taking little interest in public affairs. He leaves three sons, Ambrose, Elisha, and Sid, and one daughter, Mrs. James Eagleston. Towler, one of the highly respected citizens of our community passed to the great beyond on the 29th. He left one brother and a sister to mourn his departure; Ambrose Towler and Mrs. Sarah Smith. He had been a member of the Rock Creek Baptist Church for many years. He was 60 years, 10 months 19 days old. Funeral services were held here Thursday by Rev. H. R. SSW: Lavancha - Research Note: He was a son of Ealson and Lustea Williamson. According to the newspaper, his death was from injuries that were caused by a wagon overturning and falling on him. - Cassville Republican, August 20, 1914 - #1. Walter Williamson Killed: Walter Williamson who lived near Mano was killed late Monday evening by a horse falling on him while attempting to drive a team to a wagon up a steep hill near his home. Walter was on his way home from Cassville and had almost reached the top of a long steep hill when the horrible accident occurred. One of his horses is said to be balky and at times hard to control. It is believed the horse refused to work and caused an entanglement that resulted in the wagon being found completely upset, the horses down on the ground and Walter lying dead under one of them. We have so far been unable to learn the particulars as to how such an accident could have occurred. Mr. Williamson's ten year old son was with him at that time. Mrs. Williamson sent the little boy with a horse to meet his father and assist him up the hill. But for some reason the extra horse was not placed in use as only the team was found hitched to the wagon. The little boy conveyed the sad news to his mother and neighbors who were soon at the horrible scene. We understand Mrs. Williamson's body was found badly crushed. The news of his sudden and untimely death was severe shock to this family, father, brothers and neighbors. Walter was about 38 years of age and was one of the most highly respected of men. He was an excellent Christian gentlemen, a good neighbor and an upright citizen in every respect. He leaves to mourn his departure a wife, and eight children, an aged father, E. Williamson of this city, and two brothers, Troy of near town, Fred of Selbert, Colo. The family and immediate relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of the public. As we go to press we were unable to learn the funeral arrangements. #2. Rock Creek News: A sad accident happened Monday on Rock Creek when Walter Williamson was returning from Cassville. About one-half mile from Dave Gautney's his team became unmanageable on the hillside turning the wagon over. Walter fell under the wagon tongue and both horses fell on him breaking his neck and one shoulder and caved in his breast. His little boy was with him. Mr. Gautney was the first one to reach him and one horse was still living on the body when he arrived. Walter was one of our very best citizens and a Christian man. In losing him we lose one of our best citizens and neighbors and the family of a kind and loving companion and father. May each and every one of his family be prepared to go when the Lord calls them as Walter was and be one unbroken family around the great white throne of God is the prayer of a friend and neighbor.
